another thing about guard AI in this game I can't remember seeing in other games: in a situation where you have a stationary guard and a moving patrol circling around, if you take out and hide the stationary guard, the next time the moving patrol comes by, they will notice their buddy is missing and will go into search mode.
This was a very quick buy from me. I miss this type of game, Commandos and Desperado's
I definitely want a new Commandos and Desperado's.
James Hardy I hear you there. They were games that got me into PC gaming. I hope they make more like this. I hope Commandos comes back "Getting it done" is all I want to hear from them devs, in a Irish accent if possible.
Michelle Molitov Desperadoes: Wanted Dead or Alive is the only game which I keep on coming back to and completing it, at least every 6 months, it was my childhood. I was craving to play Commandos earlier this week tbh.
I really really want more games like Shadow Tactics.
The devs actually wanted to make a new Commandos game, but they couldn't get in touch with the rights holders. I seriously hope that Blades of the Shogun does well, cause then we could see Shadow Tactics: Guns of the Future :D

I love this game. It rewards intelligent gameplay and scouting enemy patterns/tactics. My favorite part is the effort that goes into killing enemy samurai when Mugen is unavailable. The degree to which these kills take in terms of planning leaves the act itself feeling like a major accomplishment. This is one of my best buys in a long time.
Wow, that line about the guards watching a house blow up and thinking it the was the 4th of July really got me. It also made me think back to how in Metal Gear Solid V you could literally drive a tank up to a guard post in the middle of an open desert with the sun high in the sky, park 40 yards away and jump out in a huge suit of ceramic plated body armor with a giant rocket launcher on your back, light machine gun hanging off your chest, suppressed submachine gun on your hip and an attack dog in a matching suit of armor at your side and the guards would all but wave at you! I always imagined the closest one staring at you saying to himself "I bet he's a nice guy..." in the voice of Donut from Red Vs. Blue right before I turned invisible and snuck up behind him to slit his throat, even with all that it's still one of my two favorite games...

There's a demo on steam, if you are still not convinced. The first level, which is pretty big and representative of the game.
Did they actually finish it? I thought they just did a WOT or whatever its called.
ACG Welp, I've checked, and the review mentioned playing the final mission after seven evenings.
Thats good. So many times they don't and its just someone yacking about a title.
There are also levels at night and levels with rain. At night lights extend the view cones (view cones are overall shorter though) and in the rain guards can hear you when you're going through puddles. Almost every level feels completely different.
as somebody who hates RTS/RTT games...
this is one of the best games i have ever played. cannot reccomend enough.
FANtastic game so well designed every little feature is needed and impactful.
and a really surprisingly solid story, play this game now.

I love Daedalic Entertainment! The studio is simply producing high quality games that are far away from being commercially driven. I am deffinitely getting this game now that I know it exists and I am so happy because I grew up with the Commandos games and later on the Desperados series. Thanks for this review and I think I will play this with the Japanese Audio, I just hope the text will still be in English

Just started playing this today via the GMG sale. Awesomeness. Commandos Japan. About time we had a game like this back on PC. Gorgeous, deep, satisfying AND you can have Japanese audio for awesome authenticity. So good.
Man, the stealth genre has been getting a revival in some unexpected ways lately. First we get Mark of the Ninja, a stealth game disguised as a platformer, and now we get this, a stealth game masked as an SRPG.

Very much so, but in Japanese samurai/ninjas/shoguns type of setting. There is actually a demo available on steam (the first level of the game). It's pretty good.

That I do not know (and is a concern of mine as well). I just bought it and am hoping it works with my PC. If not it won't be a big deal since it's only a couple bucks, but I'll be disappointed nonetheless.

I always felt that games like Commandos deserved way more titles, it's a fantastic sub-genre of the strategy games, with lots of possibilities... Probably something I'll tackle on, on the future, after completing my adventure game.

Great review! To me, the gameplay is what Commandos 2 should have been. I heard they are gonna bring back the Commandos series and a new stealth game by mimimi in the fashion of shadow tactics is also on the way. So awesome to have a new era for this forgotten genre.
A shame the studio that made Commandos got bankrupt, hopefully this game will mark a return of the genre.
It is a bit late to answer, but the studio did not go bankrupt...not completely anyway. They switched to mobile games and are trying to make a smartphone Commandos :( The studio that made this game actually approached Pyro Studios and Eidos leftovers to make a new Commandos title.....but Pyro refused because of the said mobile market attempt :( It is for the better IMO, this game is pretty unique and it is nice to have a new IP :)
Oh geez, another game I had no idea existed (i'm predominantly a console peasant, though). Stealth is my favorite genre, so this is a most welcome surprise. Also, there was a very clear enthusiasm in your review, so I'm definitely getting this (especially since there's a Linux version). As always, great stuff, man.

Nice review. Tried the demo, and liked it. Might pick it up. Just wonder why you didn't show off the japanese vo? I used that when I treid the demo. I think it was really good. And adds another layer of atmosphere to the game (too bad they went with the hollywood ninja tho..)

+Fossegrim Japanese VO made it so much more enjoyable for me. And I don't know a single word in Japanese, nor do I plan to, but, as you said, it added a ton of atmosphere. BTW, what do you mean by "hollywood ninja"?
kosmosyche I mean that ninjas never used robe like that. They disguised themself as farmers or traders etc. Then they would infiltrate and gain information.

Fossegrim Ah, ok. Yeah, it's not historically accurate, for sure, but, to be fair, this "pop-culture" image of ninjas is prevalent and not exactly because of hollywood. It's more or less the same thing in most games (and also anime, probably) made in Japan. Perhaps, because it looks cool.
So its commando's with ninja and Samurai. Nice but will wait for sale got huge backlog. Great review as always 👌

Evebody is remembering Commandos, and although I played commandos 1 and 2, I'm having a much more Robin Hood The Legend of Sherwood feeling (and that is awesome)
I love this style of game. Very much like 1998's "Commandos" and sequels, which I adored. I just bought the game on Steam based on your review again. To be honest I knew I would buy within the first 10 seconds of the video. But I probably wouldn't know about it without your review. Keep it up!

I love this game! As you say, it can be nut crunchingly difficult at times - occasionally I'd get so frustrated I had to quit after 15 minutes - but the gameplay is great fun, and the levels like puzzles you're sure you can solve with just one more try.
Controller support + 15 dollar localized Steam price sold this game for me.
This is such a good game. I’m actually now watching reviews after beating the game to find games that are similar to it. Commandos, as I’m hearing, btw.

ACG, you honestly have the best reviews out there on the internet.
This game looks suspiciously identical to Desperados from 2001, aside from the obvious difference in setting. This game was made by german developer Mimimi who is fairly new. Desperados was also made be a german developer, Spellbound which is no longer operating. I highly suspect Mimimi is a company consisting of some of the Spellbound people.

It's in the unity humble bundle rn and saw it was overwhelmingly positive so wanted to check it out. Honestly the bundle seems worth the $15 alone just to get this.

You should start by explaining what the game is and how it works in general. I like your reviews, but you always do graphics first, and I end up hearing a great in-depth analysis before I know if I care about the game - so I don't know if care about the graphics. Just a thought.

Aww this reminds me of that old army game vs the nazi's where u controlled a squad, commando could hide in cover or bury himself in snow, 1 was a medic, 1 could scuba dive and use boats, dammit what was it called? Its on the tip of my tongue..

This game is simply AWESOME, a commandos type of game.
The characters are also similar to commandos, different era and setting, but similar skillsets.
The voice acting is also very convincing and fitting for the characters, npcs, etc. The story is also quite good, character interactions is also good.
The enemies are well placed and each of the map is well built and varied, from snowy map, night/day map, castle map, village map, etcetera.
It's seems like ST is offsprings of Commandos Desperados Series
In the series hell hill movement valley like hybrid with plus of immerse where there isn't tactical assets like though tough

Did you ever play the old Commando games Karak and do you ever think we will see a modern day version. I have to say this title looks great and the vision cones instantly remind me of the hard as nails levels from Commandos.
