- It's very easy to fill up a medicine cabinet with herbal remedies, but we really wanted to home in on just a small selection of multifunctional herbs that can be used across many different ailments and injuries. These are the eight that I have chosen.

For those who have inquired and are interested in the Medicinal Herbal Flow Chart featured in one of our previous videos, we have now made it available for purchase here: bit.ly/3Jv0Hyj .
In the PNW, I have found Mahonia aquifolium and repens in the wild.
As a pharmacist working in a hospital and clinical setting, I would suggest that if you have questions about any contraindications for use of any herbals, to run it by a pharmacist, as we have more resources and training on naturally derived medicines, and whether an herbal interacts with diseases or other medicines.
From my experience, physicians generally dismiss complementary alternative medicines altogether, in part due to a lack of knowledge, as well as over reliance on pharmaceuticals.
This is super helpful! I just want to know if its safe to use things and the doctors never seem to know that. They just jump straight to discouraging it :^(
@@alisonwright9532 I've learned the more you work with physicians, most only seem to know medication/treatments pertaining to their specialty. Everything outside of that, they will not comment or discourage use (for fear of liability, erring on the side of caution, or their ego) .
There are certainly pharmacists that fall in this category too, but you can find more pharmacists that will comment on the safety/efficacy of these products to at least inform you if there are potential disease or medication interactions.
So glad you brought that up! But since pharmacists make their living on pharmaceuticals, isn't it going to be difficult to find one who talks freely about the use of herbals?
@@annsaunders8262 You are correct, there is probably going to be a bias towards pharmaceuticals among pharmacists. Particularly in the context of how effective pharmaceuticals are vs. herbals. However, we also make money off of herbals/natural products (popular ones are sold at pharmacies), so some pharmacists may not be totally against them.
I would recommend going to see someone at an independent location vs. a chain. Independents are more likely to embrace other modalities (herbals and complementary) to differentiate themselves from chain pharmacies. Chains also push pharmaceuticals harder to generate more revenue based on volume, and the pharmacists have less time to answer questions.
There is a good reference - Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database. It provides safety and efficacy information for individuals using herbal medicines. If the pharmacy has access to this reference, you could ask them to check it for any herbal you are interested in. It provides very detailed answers on available studies/reports.
I am so glad to see such a message
I'm busy studying herbalism and it's really important to look at both the interactions with pharmaceuticals and also how best to heal.... I love herbal medicine but I am also very grateful for antibiotics, which saved my life, so..... yeah, I'd rather know how to handle getting over the anti biotic when it's done it's job than cause further division
VERY informative! I learned a lot more than I already knew about some of these.

Bergamot….there’s no ‘n’ in it. The video also has it incorrectly
@@mimimills2524……Sorry….duly noted.
I understand. I can’t believe how many times in a day that I see people using the wrong ‘there, they’re, or their’, in a sentence…..it really makes the grammar Nazi in me want to come out! But then when you do, you get pounced on by a bazillion shrieking idiots.
I remember reading that Thomas Jefferson is the one who pushed for standardizing the spelling of our words, as before that, people spelled things as they saw fit. Seems like we’re going back to those days. 🙄
I actually thank you for the correction…..let’s stay standardized…..and civilized. 😉
Dandelion & burdock ~we used to drink that when i was young. It was a favourite for most children. You could buy it as a fizzy drink, then take the bottle back and get your sixpence. We used to make elderflower champagne too & rosehip syrup for winter colds
Where was this?
I recommend Strictly Medicinal Seeds as a sourcing for your herbal medicinal needs. Large variety, great people who are very helpful.
Great suggestion George and they are the best! 💜👍🌱
For non-US viewers/customers they will ship abroard (Canada included) but ...
"International orders (no live roots or plants) are shipped via AIR MAIL only and we do not provide phytosanitary certificates. Due to new, extremely stringent regulations, we cannot successfully ship seeds to: The EU, Montenegro or Scandinavia, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Arabia, Mexico, Central and South America or Africa."
But it may be a risk worth taking
Thanks

I lived in Florida. A hurricane was coming in. My daughter was breast fed. She might have been 2 monrhs old, if that. Her paternal grandmother came to take us to her house. 4 hour trip took a lot longer. So my milk got clogged. I took a shower to loosen my milk. All of a sudden she wouldn't latch. The point is that the nurse told me that chamomile tea would relax me and bring my milk back. It knocked me out. I had to express once, and the milk machine was up and running again! Lol!
Got Milk?! 😂 what a cool story. ❤
Creator didn't place us here without all we needed to heal ourselves. Mother Earth holds all our healing properties- we just need to find them.
Great presentation I just subscribed! LOL 🦚
Agree, but towns decided to make many medicinal banned.
I mean states, not towns.
Interesting fact, in Botany, "Invasive" means "Not Native". Also... For decades, and still all states have programs that spray poison on these natural, healthy and abundant plants instead of educating and encouraging the public to forage. This has got to stop. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and leading the way. Love and respect. Peace
Yes it needs to stop but they do it on purpose sadly . regenerative farmers do not . Having lawns I come to realize are not eco-friendly . But people trying to change this have had to go to court for planting gardens especially for bees .
So far they have won there cases but for how long . Crazy yes .
Actually, to clarify, the term "invasive" is usually reserved for non-native species that has become overpopulated and is causing damage to native ecosystems.
That is not a “fact” . There are distinctions between invasive, non native and naturalized . The terms are not always used accurately but there are distinctions. I absolutely agree on foraging and using invasive plants but there can be cases where that is not always possible and or not enough , alone to manage the population.
That’s because *BigFarMa cannot ‘patent’ a wiId weed,* and therefore cannot make Big $$$! And, as w/99.9% of aII manmade poisonz, they are onIy meant to *TREAT, N0T H£AL,* in order to keep making Big $$$!
If you believe in panga, no plant is invasive.
Am so enjoying learning this! Would you next show how to harvest, store, use ect. these eight great plants. (How does one best dry. How to tincture.) Thank you.🙂

This content kept me engrossed for all 52 minutes! I really enjoy how you use and present studies and peer reviewed papers along side your own knowledge and experience. So many people just say “this is how it is” and one is expected to take the word of a stranger on UA-cam as absolute truth. And even though those strangers may be 100% accurate with their information, it’s hard to trust just anything you come across these days. You bring a variety of proof to the table and it is greatly appreciated.
This was really interesting
This woman is AWESOME!!!! Her knowledge base is UNBELIEVABLE!!!!
Can we hear more about medicinal herbs that can be used very commonly in a household medicine cabinet? 💚 🙏 Like Plantain (Plantago) / Arnica? Also, YOU ARE SUCH A PRECIOUS earthling!! Very inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
I got curious one day and looked up some terminology...wort means plant but also root.
Anything with, bane, is known to deter or weaken whatever it is named...like fleabane/dogbane/lionsbane... 👍
So interesting!

1:03 Yarrow/ Woundwort (Achillea millefolium subsp. millefolium)
6:28 Wood Betony/ Purple Betony/ Lousewort (Betonica/ Stachys Officinalis)
9:58 Golden Seal (Hydrastis canadensis), or replace with similarly medical 11:43 Compact Oregon Grape (Mahonia aquifolium 'Compacta')
18:32 Church Steeples/ Bur Marigold/ Liverwort (Agrimonia eupatoria)
One other thought I had: I would love to hear about medicinal plants that grow well as house plants. So many of the ones listed are very basic and actually really do better outside. But I would bet there are loads of medicinals that would thrive as houseplants.
You might try moringa, native to the Phillipines to grow as a houseplant, bringing it outdoors ( beginning with a few overcast days) during summer. Surprising what that tropical plant can do!
Aloe vera
Great inquiry! I just discovered that spilanthes does well indoors. Yes, that would be a great topic to explore...
Spider plant
How wonderful to have stumbled across this channel. You have a wealth of information and I am so thankful you are willing to share it. In reference to your comment about using what grows where I am (South Texas); I find aloe vera to be an essential herb to have on hand for burns. The pain remedy of aloe vera is immediate and the burn also heals very quickly. I look forward to seeing what else you have to share.
I'm so excited that I've just been totally cured from my Genital herpes disease in just 7 days by HERBALIST DOCTOR KINGSLEY on UA-cam
Apple cider vinegar is better for burns. i taught my son the chef this. He came home one day with a pretty bad burn and I ask why he did not use the apple cider vinegar I had given him. He said the people in the kitchen had figured out what it was for and had used it all up. Use the vinegar as soon as possible after a burn. Aloe is mildly acid but vinegar has a ph of usually 2.2, very acid. When you burn yourself you destroy the acidity of the skin and it goes alkaline. The vinegar reverses the alkalinity and if used soon enough negates the the burn and the pain. You can also put vinegar on a burn more than once.
I use honey for burns with great results.
I've read that chamomile has a contraindication with blood thinners. It might lower your blood pressure too much if you already use a medication for that.
I really like how she used the scientific names since it's always important to check into any side effects an herb may have, including interactions with other drugs or possible allergic reactions. Herbs can be pretty powerful as medicine so dosing is also a consideration. When I recommend herbs to anyone I always encourage them to consider and research these things. Also starting with really tiny amounts to see how the herb may work for them. I apply these same considerations when I take any other medication or drug legal or not. I also enjoyed the beautiful videos of the plants to help folks with identification since folks without botanical training can mistake poisonous plants for those that are medicinal.
Just a heads up when moving amongst Agrimony- the many, small seeds are encased in burs which release easily from the plant but not so easily from your clothes. Regardless, in addition to their medicinal value, their color and form add a very pretty element in a planting.
Manuka honey is great on wounds as well. It just needs to be potent enough. Active 15+ And the honey is a natural antibiotic, gets rid of and avoids infection.
Good for pink eye
Just an additional note: Hypericum Perforatum, St. John's Wort, also likely decreases the effectiveness of the anti-depressant Bupropion, which is not an SSRI. Looked it up because I was interested in maybe adding it but I want my wellbutrin to work lol
I increased my injectable B12 Hydroxycobalum,, CK spelling,,, n was able to dump ALLLLL my antidepressants..... LOL big pharma..... That type B12 stays in system longer....
Ayuvedic medicine works without side effects
Thank you but I like my antidepressants.
Wellbutrin, very dangerous if not taken exactly as directed. You must not stop it with out tapering off. Many young people can get Wellbutrin for cessation from smoking when they are really treating themselves for depression, Stopping the drug too quickly is thought to have partially caused their suicides.
Words of thanksgiving to #drbanlogun who finally cured my herpes with his natural helps I used for 7days and I was confirmed completely cured on the 8th day thank you so much sir I promise to testify once I am cured
Hi Summer! I use painter’s tape for labelling. It’s great because it’s removed so easily with no residue. Great video!
Good idea. Thanks.
I thought I was the only one doing that! great minds! (good old green painters tape)
thank you
me too works well and soaks off easily too even after a long period

Many excellent lessons are to be learned from here! Awesome and enlightening video. Not only did you explain the medicinal purposes, but also elaborated on how the plant evolved based on its environment and the differential of growth conditions (indoors vs. outdoors). Thanks!

Do you have any book recommendations for identifying these plants and others in the wild?
At first I thought you were a young kid , then I heard you mention the family names of plants . Thank you Soo much , so informative, sending lots of Love ,

I need to get back to taking care of myself & loving myself. My pain has increased since I stopped doing that & stopped mediation. Time to dig deep❤
I really enjoy your videos, very helpful and informative. I have mixed feelings about the outcry against non-natives and/or invasive species. When you think how many species we have brought almost to extinction in America, both plant and animal (Goldenseal, Ginseng, Beaver) by their demand and export to Europe and Asia, then perhaps we do need to be processing more of the Barberry root for export and leave the native Goldenseal alone for the next 40 years. Wild grown Goldenseal beds take many, many years to establish. I also want to mention that many important herbs were brought to this country by immigrants, such as the dandelion. I am so glad to have the non-native lowly Dandelion here, love those greens and flowers.
Thank you for this, herbals have become a lost art and great way to interact with our gardens. Yes, chamomile a nice addition to an alt lawn and delight to walk on. A go to this time of year for chigger/midge bites is peppermint essential oil in a carrier oil like almond. Love the mints!
It’s not a lost art > the pharmaceutical conglomerate rich people stole it
@@CariMachet absolutely true. we need to take it back
Omg I just came across this now a year later, but last month Feb 2024 I had a massive "gladular infection" which I thought was something else I was told to just let it run its course and take tyenol when needed. I didnt know that about calendula and had I seen this last year (sorry) I would have been able to use this to help with the swollen glands😮I don't get why older doctors don't spend just that bit of extra time to think --- thank you so much for these videos
Love your videos. As I sit here I'm infusing mullien tincture, just finished a calendula salve ( my favorite herb) & always have chamomile in my home apothecary. So nice to see you also do this. 🤗
I cant wait to start bbn
Hey Karen, I have some dried mullien, what do you use the tincture for?
I use this instead of a cough suppressant. It's great for coughs and congestion and even sore throats. Plus such a benefit knowing what the ingredients are. And very inexpensive to make.
Why is Calendula your favorite herb?
@@mfpJ4ever I infuse it in vodka and use it for medicine when I'm feeling congested.
I only stumbled upon your page today, wow this is a great quality video. I love how you explain and break it down, but the video editing and images are helpful for studying. Thank you!
wow it was interesting to know all of these, I have achillia growing in our backyard and I don't even know it was an Herb

I really appreciate you. Thanks for sharing and the love and care for your humanitarian efforts. I am going to explore more of your work. I am hoping to find out how you make tinctures, sauve ( hope it is the right spelling) and cream like a body cream for dry skin.🦋🌻🌿🎀♥️
Fantastic.
Hi I enjoyed this video. Do you have a medicinal herb book you could recommend?
You are beautiful and very knowledgeable. For me, it would be helpful when you explain what the plant does to say the name of it so we can search to purchase it from herb shop, Amazon, etc
Using the names of these plants that pharmacist understand is not helpful to the average person. Thank you for sharing with us ❤
