  • You will think the transmission has gone out, it does crazy things. No reverse, intermittent 1st gear, slips, switches gears irregularly. Replacing the transmission neutral safety position switch cured it all

    What a awesome man you are. Everything, you have mentioned is exactly what going on with my lovely 2001 Mazda Tribute. Mechanics had rubbed thousands of dollar's from me because of this.     I WANT TO THANK YOU, SO VERY MUCH FOR POSTING THIS YOU TUBE. I HAVE A 2001 MAZDA TRIBUTE, THE OD LIGHT STARTED BLINKING AND THERE WAS SOME SLIPPAGE IN THE TRANNY. AT FIRST I THOUGHT THE WORST. SO GLAD I LOOKED THIS UP. GOT THE PART TODAY AND CHANGED IT MYSELF. AROUND 80 BUCKS LIKE YOU SAID.     PERFECT! It's like a fix-all in a box. The backup lights wouldn't go out either, so I guess that's another symptom you might mention. After changing the neutral switch all of the problems are cleared up... and the best part is that I don't have to buy a $600 transmission. Thanks dearly from one mechanic to another.

    thank you so much for this video!! Ive already replaced 2 different sspeed sensor. and that didnt work!! was really starting to think we was in trouble! this is exactly what my 03 escape is doing and it started right after my car over heated and i had to change the thermostat, really appreciate this video!

    Thx. Guys like you are so helpful to those of us who have to keep and repair older cars. My 2002 Tribute will not shift into OD. Depressing button on end of gear shifter makes no difference. OD dash light comes on flashing everytime you get to hwy speed and then engine light comes on. I will try your part because it's only $40. There is another transmission part I found called the solenoid inside the transmission itself. $140 and much more labor. But I dont know what else to try. My friends and mechanics can't figure it out otherwise. We have all looked for just an OD button or switch but no such part exists or is available to purchase.

    I have the same vehicle and the transmission went just like this one. It just so happens that it started acting crazy after I had a big oil leak that sprayed all over that area. Thanks for the tip. I will check it out. ;)

    Question on a 2002 Ford Escape that my wife has. She drove 20 miles to work just fine. Got in to leave and it was sluggish and then nothing for 1,2 and D. Reverse works just fine. On flat ground if you cycle the trans from 1 to 2 to D it will creep forward. When you move the shift lever from P or N to D you can feel a slight engagement and the RPM's do drop a tad but step on the gas and the rpm's go up and no forward movement.
    Her genius cousin added fluid, not telling if correct type. It's overfilled about 1/2 inch above the black plastic ball on the dip stick.and looks dark. They put it on a trailer and dropped it off at my house. No check engine light.
    Should I drain the fluid, put the correct type and amount and see what happens? At least at that point I know that's correct.
    Any suggestions before I haul it to a shop?

    Hey the shop manual says use a special tool to adjust it when replacing but doesn’t list it. How did u adjust the new one u put on?

      Car must be in Neutral PRIOR to removal. Before installation of new Neutral Safety Switch verify that center scribe line/mark is in alignment with Outter scribe line/ mark. Then install..don't force while reinstalling. Hope this helps💪💯💪🌊🌴

    I have a question for you id possible.....I was driving my 06 escape down the road an the gears just disappeared....it will go in park an not roll but as soon as you take it out of park it will free roll in every gear like nothing is there....any ideas?

    The code was sent as tcc...torque converter celluloid. Excessive slippage Probabal causes were, celluloid valve sticking,faulty or bad connectoir,old or dirty trans fluid,also the overdrive light is blinking shortly followed by the engine light, but changes gears timely as it should and overdrive works as well. Would you recommend a fluid change and the purchase of a new park,neutral safety switch since my overdrive is flash wether engaged or not,but also this feature is functional ?

    we have a 2006 ford escape XLT, just started giving us trouble shifting into higher gears, keeps slipping. there are no codes. A friend who is a mechanic cannot see what it is either. we cleaned the throttle body, and it does not have two squares showing as you did above. absolutely no codes coming up. Any advice on what to check next?

    Working on a 2005 Tribute 3.0 V6 AWD. Got a flashing O/D light once warmed and takes longer to shift to 2nd gear (under medium throttle gets to 4,000 RPM before it shifts). When you go through the gears manually it shifts a lot better but not 100% it’s got 193,000 miles. No codes. Not sure if it’s the shifter position switch or not

    Thank you for this video! I have a question? I just had a brand new transmission put into my 2002 Mazda Tribute and I had been told before that all it needed was the transmission sensor! They've put both on! Now, its shifting fine but I believe they've not installed the sensor correctly? There are blocks around both the D and the 2 on my dash! And sitting at idle at a stoplight, my rpms are at almost 1000! My mechanic says that's normal? I've been trying to find the answer to my question everywhere and I know I've read before that when replacing the sensor you need to start out putting the car in neutral? And that way the gears will line up correctly? I may be wrong? I know that the dash didn't read like this before they put the sensor on and I'm nervous that this could hurt my new transmission? Can you please advise me on what this problem might be and if I need to be worried and if so, the proper way to go about fixing it? Thank you so much! Concerned and going crazy worried! Beth!

    I have a question. I have 06 tribute that stall when put in drive or revere and stalls when you come to stop. we have replaced egr. nothing. iac nothing took that one back bc it was alot of money. cleaned old one. cleaned throttle body checked air filter checked fuel filter. we are stumped

    I have no reverse and my O/D does flash, but will it make the car accelerate slow and drive very slowly but start picking up speed

      Can you check your default codes? Mine gave a -P0705 - Transmission Range Circuit or Neutral Safety switch. The Transmission Range Sensor is both of these. Also check the wiring to the sensor for broken insulation, frays or burn.

    Does that switch have to be positioned a certain way? Also, could that faulty part cause a P1780 "Transmission Control Switch circuit out of Self-Test range"? My symptoms are only on the highway and it doesn't seem to get in the right gear when I'm up a hil and trying to pass a truck. Otherwise works fine.

      There are two faint lines (one on the center part of the sensor and one opposite that on the body of the sensor). Have the car in neutral and just install the sensor making sure those lines are matched up when tightening the bolts. You can replace this sensor without draining coolant and without removing any coolant hoses. Just remove battery and the battery tray and access from underneath the hoses. Harder to see and reach that way (which is why some people remove the hoses) but it can be done (I recently did it that way). Didn't fix my transmission problem, but I have diagnosed the cause as a partially plugged/falling-apart catalytic converter.

    Hey, I have this exact car and would really love for your assistance. I'm having problems with my air condition blowing hot air, so we identified the ac compressor clutch relay and we would like to recharge it with alligator clips, except we don't know which port to attach the clip to. Do you have any idea? We honestly don't want to get ridiculously charged for something that can be easily fixed at home. Please help.

    Ok...but does that switch just not allow the car to start?If that is the case...did the car start after brought in?...or diagnosed without the engine ever running?
    Our Escape did same thing and mechanic stated if it was that switch, it woould have just not allowed car to start.

    are they easier way to change the transmission Fluid, can you not just remove one of the cooling lines in the front of the radiator and let the transmission pump the fluid from the pan? And replace the necessary Fluid?

    Just now in my 05 Escape the OD light flashed, then stayed on. Pushing the OD button does nothing. I just had the alternator and tie rod ends replaced, oil changed. and new tires. The cars seems to be driving fine, at 75mph I'm at 3,500 RPM.

    I have mazda tribute 3.0 v6 with same transmission.
    I have a problem:
    When i put car in 1gear with stick, it slips, and i cant go forward.
    But, when i put car in "D" everything is fine. Car shift smoothly thruu all gears including the first gear. In 2 gear is ok
    Revers is fine.There is nothing bad.
    I change transmission fluid.
    Did you know, what is a problem. How to solve this.

    I changed the neutral safety switch and problem still exist... Overdrive light only comes on when I go above 30mph... also the box around Park, reverse, and drive stays on... Any other suggestions

    I have an 05 ford escape code p0707 popped up. got the sensor had them change it and before i got home the light was back on and the gears were jumping from drive to 1 and 2. if it isn't the sensor but is giving that code off what else could the problem be?

    Found my problem with erratic temp gauge..changed sender..no change..engine never seems hot..finally did get hot and warped the head...removed thermostat and found no water..removed radiator overflow bottle which still showed good water level??? Found bottom return pipe on bottle had only pinhole if anything for water return...had to drill out and found it was molding plastic blockage from manufacture not rubbish..no quality control ### check your overflow bottles ....

    i got reverse and all drive gears but when i take it on highway on 4th and 5th the RMP jumps to 6000 RMP then dropped down. it jerks when it shifting and O/D light is flashing have any idea

    2stroketurbo, I have a 2001 Ford Escape while driving on the road it started to lose idle. I pulled the car over and put it into park. Turned the car off. Then turned the engine on, engine running fine. Have had no issues with the transmission. Put it on R,D,2 and 1 and the Esape won't budge.. The transmission fluid is fine. Can the Neutral Safety Switch be the problem here as well?

    Hope somebody can help cause my mechanic can't. I have a 2003 AWD 6 cyl Tribute and the shifter won't get out of park unless I push on the little button that hidden under the small access cover on the top of the shifter housing, behind the steering wheel. They say they ran a diagnostic that stopped at this area and that Mazda (and Ford) only make the ENTIRE shifting (sorry I don't know how you call it) unit behind the steering wheel, but they can't find it anywhere. The transmission doesn't slip, it just stopped getting out of park one day, literally overnight. Any idea what this could be? Thanks.

      Interlock solenoid or linkage to it failed. Should not be hard to fix

    I've got a 03 Tribute that I need to service the Transmission.
    Its a DIY job for me but certainly something I haven't done before.
    As I scoped it out..I saw that that pan is sitting vertical. I wanted to ask you since you said you serviced the transmission..
    How did you get access to remove the pan cover? Did you work from both the bottom of the car and the top?
    Did you remove the upper and lower coolant hoses? Heater hose also?
    Could you offer some help and what I should look for or be careful of?

    Hello,
    I have a question for anyone who can help.
    MODEL: 2001 Tribute V6, Auto
    PROBLEM/ISSUE: Every gear works but after a few minutes will kick into what sounds like Neutral. Once this happens it will often stay this way BUT if I turn off the car disconnect the battery everything will work again for a few minutes. I have also noticed; the Dash Cluster, the "P" and "D" are only Outlined and the "R" is missing, along with the Key is getting STUCK IN.
    ATTEMPTS: I have replaced the Neutral Safty Switch, all the ABS sensors, the Input Trans Sensor, Output speed Trans Sensor, and checked the Shifting cable but I'm still having the same issue.
    QUESTION:
    Could the new NSS be bad too, can I test it?
    Could it be "Old/Bad" Trans Fluid?
    Could it be something in the ignition switch?
    Could it be something in the Shifting Cable?
    Could it be a relay somewhere?

    Please help! My 2002 ford escape vibrates when it hits about 40 to 45 mph, it will keep vibrating until you hit 60, you feel on the steering wheel and dash, iv replaced the cv axles tire hub bearing, motor mounts, and transmission oil, im 99% sure its coming form the transmision and not the engine, if i coast down a hill in neutral it still does is when i hit 40 mph, the last mechanic tried to take for a few grand,I left there before he got started, i have gut feeling its something in the transaxle thats constantly turning creating this, Ive even turned it off the truck while driving at 55+ mph pop it in neutral and its still there, have you ever encountered such a situation or have any recomendations ? thank you

    I got code p0708. Found out from you what it was. Coincidentley i had unplugged it to get to my thermostat. Some fluids drained on sensor connections while unplugged. After plugging it back in, I noticed hesitations in tranny. I have disconnected it to let any fluids dry off of it. Hope that works. Thanks for the info.

    Sounds like a hard plastic cover/shroud is in order for the top of this part due to it's susceptibility to failure yet again from fluids and/or acids.

    Тоже появилась проблема с этим ингибитором. Включаю зажигание и селектор показывает что включена задняя скорость (R), также перескакивает положение N и сразу отображается режим D.

    What mine does is when u go up a hill or around a bend the truck doesn't move. The engine is running but you got no gas pedal it's does nothing .you. Have to shut it off and let it cool down n u are good to go
    I have no engine lights on or nothing???

    Has anyone heard of intermittent clutch in the 06 escape? Replaced master cylinder three times in case bad. No leaking from slave cylinder. New replaced pedal for clutch. Same problem

    Okay bro I have a 03 tribute 3.0 V6 2 Wheel Drive it’s the ES trim recently had coolant system work done right above the neutral safety switch I noticed one day it was in park and it was marking neutral at the same time then that went away then one day put it in drive overdrive light started blinking and the vehicle would only accelerate in second gear would not downshift first only sometimes you would have to be moving put it in neutral redline it then drop it back into drive and it would catch first gear it’s doing a bunch of different codes like third gear incorrect ratio fourth gear incorrect gear ratio and shift solenoid a electrical can The neutral safety switch cause this problem I really don’t want to spend the money on the part if that’s not what it is

    I have just replaced mine on my Escape, as a 'just in case' whilst I was doing some other work. Unfortortunately, it cause MORE work, as the plastic pipe into to water pump broke off when I was jiggling the thermostat body, so be careful doing that as it caused a major headache with other thngs and more parts to buy. However, as it turned out, the water pump as on it's way out with a rough bearing, and the pastic component may have gone on the road! So, intiall frustration and expense, saves later inconvenicence down the road (and perhaps greater expense) whilst actually on the road!
    On the postive side, the 'clunking I always got changing gear, especially from park into reverse, has gone and all is quiet an smooth with mechanical stick shift changes. It also goes to show, how full of shit the dealer mechanics are, when they keep telling you, "oh, that's just the way it is...", when it wasn't when you first bought the car, or even after driving for a while! It is unfortunate that most of these things you only find out years down the track, when there is not point in complaining! Except in comment discussions! Lol!

    Hi, I have a Mazda Tribute 2004. Im just wondering if anyone can help out with something. So sometimes I turn on my car and I go somewhere and park and come back and my car turns on but than cuts off automatically. What could be the cause of this?     I was driving down the highway 65 mph in my 2003 ford escape after replacing my waterpump, thermostat & radiator and my truck just stop pulling...it goes into all gears but will not move...Plz help!!

      oi uhm, that sounds like a driveshaft issue or a switch issue

      mone will start and pull for a little bit then it will stop pulling at all after a minute? you guys have any ideas on that?

    My Ford Escape feels like it's chugging when I go uphill or cruise at a steady speed on flat ground. I really don't think Ford did their homework on these transmissions.

      I have the same exact issue with my escape 2005 , i thought was the front axel broken , then maybe the transmission , but i think now that it can be this sensor
