Bought a used focus and dropped the pan at 100k and I was glad I did. The pan was never off and that lifetime oil was done. There was so much fine debris on the magnet it was 3 times it’s real size.
Bought a Suburban once that probably never had it changed and the SUV had been used to tow horses at one point. Worst transmission I had; fluid was pitch black as soot and yet it was so thick that you couldn't move the gear shift easily so maybe the seller pulled a used car lot trick. The trans rear gear went under a month after purchase. I still have it since I had someone work on it for relatively cheap; $1,100 in 2015. He did it as a side job out of his garage.

Though I own a vehicle for long-distance drives, I'm always on my bicycle for any distance shorter than 7 miles, which is within 90% of points of interest. Your health, bank account, and the environment would improve significantly. Driving is a lot more costly than most of us think. One retirement guru estimated that the cost of driving is $15 per gollan of gas used, of course, he's adding up the depreciation of the vehicle and other negative externalities associated with driving.
Good one. Most cars have trans temps via ODBII which is great. Separating transmission cooling from that of the engine is something to consider by installing a third party cooler.
My old 2003 tundra it was 3 years old when star having transmission problems like no shifting Antill won't Start one morning and I went to sears to get a battery so I installed and cranked like brand new and shifting like it should.
Another reason to keep your cooling system in good shape is that some transmission coolers are built into the radiator, if the radiator gets too hot it can crack, and if this happens to the passage with the transmission cooler the coolant will get blown into the transmission creating a strawberry milk shake that will dissolve the clutches in your transmission.
Correct. I have a manual transmission truck which I purposely purchased because it was a manual. Easier to repair and less chance of a break down than an auto transmission. If only North America embraced manuals the average repairs would be significantly reduced.
+Mark Rice Suck it up, I don't like driving my car during winter on these awful salted roads, but occasionally something comes up and I don't have any other transportation available, but alas I have to suck it up and clean it religiously so nothing rusts out.
Good morning Mr.kilmer, was waiting for ur first video of the day, u never dissapoint, good advise, truthful. I drive automatics, but we have no GOOD machanics here! - England.
Scotty reminds me of my step grandfather. Same garage setup, completely disorganized but a highly trusted neighborhood mechanic. He started out just fixing his cars and truck until neighbors started asking him questions about their car problems. It was a great way to supplement his income and ended up earning more repairing cars out of his garage than his steel Forman job.
@@JeepTJWheelin only problem now you do that and local authorities will shut you down ( death of real capitalism ) . The big companies including all car manufacturers and dealerships and chain repair shops make sure laws were created not to allow any small local guys to be self sufficient and operate in modest locations to protect there own interests. Basically what I describe is fascism were state and big business work together happened in all industry since late 1970ies they also conditioned the public to inform them of the activities also they are condition to think they are doing their civic duty .
I agree with you on the tire replacement on all wheel drive. It makes absolute sense. I taught my kids with two wheel drive if you're going to replace the tire always do them in pairs. The reason being not to mix tread patterns on a single axle. I don't even like mixing tread patterns on the entire car. If every tire has the same stopping power and traction you're less likely to have control problems in adverse conditions such as rain high temperatures snow and Etc. Always do them in pairs on the same axle.
Thank you for your videos man, but what you are saying is this, not always is transmission itself , many other factor could feel like the transmission not working right .
A bad crank sensor could also prevent ur car from starting. It was kicking over but it wasn't starting... Just had one put in. Back to norm now. Got an '02 Yukon Denali with a 6.0 in it. Still runs great Scotty
Also worthy of mention is if you change the tire/wheel size (think wagon wheels), you MUST have the transmission reprogrammed to accommodate the different size. Otherwise, the transmission will slip, creating heat and damaging the torque converter.
Scotty thought I would comment on your video! I drive f250 out of nowhere transmission lost over drive and reverse went out hard shifting, i drained trans, torque converter, and trans-cooler. New filter new fluid ( it needed it) no difference not even a little!!!!! Really upset was about to pull my transmission it's 4x4 which really stinks, (a new one is about 4500.00) but I talked to a real transmission guy( an honest one) and he said some of my electronics are grounded thru my O2 sensors and they were bad along with my battery and mass air flow sensor. Changed all that on a Sunday transmission shifts and drives like a new. So I changed my rear differential and my transfer case and front differential a little love goes a long, and the transmission problem reminded of that. Like your videos kept it up. Sir
Scotty you're a good mechanic but all GMC trucks and SUVs come with a temperature gauge for the transmission but you're awesome dude you tell a lot of good information
I've posted before, I have an '86 Toyota Corolla with 557,000 miles on it, never changed the fluid. It still looks clear and clean, rarely needs any added and every test I can find to test the transmission it passes with flying colors. To be honest at this point I don't know if I should ever try changing it, I don't drive it that much and the miles are easy ones. The engine is the original too, I use conventional oil changed 4x/year, avg miles/year are about 4000.
Great video Scotty! Good explanation on how things are interrelated. Most people don't have a real good idea of how those things work-even before everything went electronic.
Scotty, that had to be the best video I've ever seen you do, and I've watched a lot of yours. Very informative. I'd like to see a series like this on almost every vehicle ie. my 1500 Silverado...their problems, how to try to keep them from breaking down. What to do for them for preventive maintenance beyond the usual.
Nothing beats the raw mechanical feel of old cars. You're responsible for every action, unlike today where there's always a middle man computer between you and the wheels on the tarmac.
I heard many Asian cars use Maxlife synthetic fluid and it is extremely compatible. But NOT Honda - need original. I have 230,000 miles on a Toyota Highlander. Had it flushed with Maxlife and early on and been doing drain and fill. Every other change I drop the pan and change filter. Trans seems strong. I’m sold on Maxlife for Toyota.
When our Cayennes battery started to lose a cell it would start up fine but the check AWD system light would be on, it would shift crappy, and ran rough. After a quick drive and restart it would be fine with no lights. Next day it would happen again. I changed the battery which is under the front seat.. and its been great sense. No lights and runs smoothly. He is absolutely correct about newer cars having much different symptoms of a bad battery than older ones. The good news is they give you a bit more warning because of the drivability issues.
I doubt it .. I honestly think I'll push my transmission to 300,000 no problems ... as a matter of fact I'ma buy my nissan transmission oil from the dealership and take it to my local mechanic to do a flush tomorrow.
@@o_o8203 slap yourself.. we are 2019 right now .. I barely started watching Almighty Scotty like 2years ago ... I wonder if scotty has any videos from 2012 on UA-cam .. cause if he did I was sleeping and I wouldn't have bought my nissan with all the knowledge he has blessed us with
Right on Scotty. I never buy AWD vehicles. Money pit in tires and maintenance. I never buy a car that doesn't have steel wheels. Bent rim costs a fortune with those low profile tires. Steel is cheap and less worry.
I started watching your videos because I'm truck/SUV shopping and I want to avoid buying a lemon. But little by little you're talking me into keeping my "Old Faithful" '97 Jeep Wrangler with the manual transmission and 271k miles on it because it runs great and doesn't have ANY of the problems the newer vehicles seem to have (and I can work on it myself, too!). LOL!
Wow give you credit you must the original demo factory jeep but from 95 to 2000 nothing but computer problems sensor problems ground problems dam even radio & window problems even purchasing a new computer of it's not flashed properly at a stealership meaning you actually get someone who knows the proper way to do it...I'm referring to grand Cherokee Laredo & I've owned 3 different ones within those years only to hear the horror stories all over the internet & UA-cam surrounding grand Cherokees ...if you have the magic one you speak of hold on to it forever & keep doing whatever your doing cause it works...maybe you can write a book ha ha ..again good luck with her..

Good one. Most cars have trans temps via ODBII which is great. Separating transmission cooling from that of the engine is something to consider by installing a third party cooler.
My old 2003 tundra it was 3 years old when star having transmission problems like no shifting Antill won't
Start one morning and I went to sears to get a battery so I installed and cranked like brand new and shifting like it should.
My 97 gmc 1500 just past 330k and will still lite the tires! It wasn’t really built for heavy towing so I don’t strain it ever and I have no issues!
What kind of dip stick designed an automatic transmission without a dip stick.
Tsunami Shijo only car I had with that engineering genius was an 02 Sunfire lol good riddance to that thing
Lol 😂
A young mechanic
Cadillac hid mine underneath the air filter/air tube assembly... have to take it all out to check trans fluid level...
Ive seen them on a fwd, had a red plug in it. Some Hondas?
OMW I never knew this! Nearly 300,000km on my Jeep GC LE. They need to teach people how to take care of their cars!
I mean they are, tons of maintenance tips online
Another reason to keep your cooling system in good shape is that some transmission coolers are built into the radiator, if the radiator gets too hot it can crack, and if this happens to the passage with the transmission cooler the coolant will get blown into the transmission creating a strawberry milk shake that will dissolve the clutches in your transmission.
Scotty I haven't changed my transmission fluid for over 16 years, it's a Ford ranger 1999 it was built in 1989. Still running great 👍👍
I have 287,000 miles on my 2001 Chevrolet 2500, 6.0 eng, automatic. I changed the transmission fluid at 2000 miles and no more. Still runs great.
Thanks for the battery / alternator load test idea! Never knew it could affect the transmission.
i have a Manual Transmission, jokes on you.
Lol. That tickled me.. 👍 🇬🇧
Correct. I have a manual transmission truck which I purposely purchased because it was a manual. Easier to repair and less chance of a break down than an auto transmission. If only North America embraced manuals the average repairs would be significantly reduced.
Blue Moon I wish there was more of those in America :(

Suck it up, I don't like driving my car during winter on these awful salted roads, but occasionally something comes up and I don't have any other transportation available, but alas I have to suck it up and clean it religiously so nothing rusts out.
Good morning Mr.kilmer, was waiting for ur first video of the day, u never dissapoint, good advise, truthful. I drive automatics, but we have no GOOD machanics here! - England.
-Watched video on YT and the Morgan is still made out of wood.. Must have some good carpenters in England :)
Great advise!! Modern transmissions require OEM fluid. I don’t care what aftermarket manufacturers advertise, OEM only. Period.
Meet Scott in Houston at Auto Zone . He is the exact same person! Knowledgeable and awesome guy! You save me $$$! Thank you sir!
"When i was a young mechanic" always funny!
😁 I laughed too
Scotty reminds me of my step grandfather. Same garage setup, completely disorganized but a highly trusted neighborhood mechanic. He started out just fixing his cars and truck until neighbors started asking him questions about their car problems. It was a great way to supplement his income and ended up earning more repairing cars out of his garage than his steel Forman job.
That was before I was even born or my parents met each other and I am 42.
I love all of Scotty's videos. I agree with him 100 percent.
Makes complete sense now that you have mentioned it.
Good info I didn't know that
Nice to hear real world advice to go with the book learning.
Love how Scotty’s keeps up with the technology. He’s not like these other old schoolers🤣 “don’t change your transmission fluid” yeah ight!
This is very helpful since I have nothing but older vehicles. Saves me a Lot of money.
Sir
"If you hit something" and a picture of Justin Bieber pops up....I almost fell over..
Lol I was going to mention something like that but I figured someone would've commented about it. Lol
Scotty I have family in Houston and Huntsville if im ever down there I'll have to stop by and meet the legend. I live in Ohio.
Yeah me too, rather than fast and loud. Just to say thx
@@mazdarex7 just loud.
is he on death row, in Huntsville, oh, my my, did he screw sm1 over fixing a transmission? ha, ha! Scotty's got balls!
Huntsville, the slaughter house of TX! no wonder Mr Rivas asked for the death penalty. what is this world coming to!
The most expensive things in your vehicle.
1. Engine
2. Transmission
3. Eletronics
4) The driver. Although, an argument could be made against that.

While your waiting for the fluid to drain check plugs for green pins. If the pins are green spray them clean.
WOW, I HAD NO IDEA? THANK YOU SCOTTY , YOU THINK OF EVERYTHING!
I have a 1999 toyota civic and a 2002 nissan altima.............thanks for all your videos.
I'm so happy that I got my classic cougar with no ECU 😃😉
Reason why I got my 5 speed Tacoma. Those i4s are bulletproof and I have plenty of room to work around and on the engine.
Nothing beats the raw mechanical feel of old cars. You're responsible for every action, unlike today where there's always a middle man computer between you and the wheels on the tarmac.
*As always great advice Scotty*
How to maintain a AWD system in a car:
-Buy a 94 Celica
Haha
I never had anyone to show me the specifics. If I got a question , he's got a video. Oh yeah! He actually knows what he's talking about.
Tremendous information, God bless you , Love from India.
hello and thanks!

Best video in quite some time, thanks Scotty.
My car does its transmission fluid changes on its own every 3 months, just got to keep it topped off!
I really like your tips on caring for our cars, thank you 🙂

im still waiting for scotty to take flight constantly waving those arms.
Right on Scotty. I never buy AWD vehicles. Money pit in tires and maintenance. I never buy a car that doesn't have steel wheels. Bent rim costs a fortune with those low profile tires. Steel is cheap and less worry.
Thanks Scotty, I'm going to check mine!
