  • We scheduled the footing inspection for Thursday, and now we have three days to get ready! All 24 Rebar cages need to be placed and secured in the holes prior to inspection. Rebar cages need to be finished. We have to install 3" rebar chairs on the bottom of each cage. The cages will sit on these chairs and it will keep the rebar 3" from the surface of the ground to meet code. The rebar cages must be secured in place for the inspection. We build 24 fixtures out of 2x4s to secure the rebar cages in the center of the holes. Justin works a full time job and Lil runs the homestead and homeschools, so we work under moonlight and spiders to get it done. Will we get everything done in time to pass our first building inspection?

It suprises me how many don't know code regarding rebar and ground contact. Nice job

Good man taking care of family and working late to make it happen. Holding down the 9-5 AND working on the homestead will be so worth the effort. Thanks for sharing.

What if you get a 4' length of galvanized steel pipe to extend the rebar cutter handle. Maybe momma will have an easier time snapping through the rebar. Just a thought.

It's all good, we are finished with the rebar and moving on to the next phase.

Why not just start off with sonotubes at the finished height you're going to need?

That was the plan originally, but it just worked out easier logistically for us to split it into two pours. I was going to need two trucks anyways to get the amount of concrete I needed and the holes were already dug and ready to pour. I also wanted to see how the first inspection went so this was a perfect opportunity to see how it would go. I was also concerned about being able to fit the truck in between rows and possibly causing holes to cave in. If things went wrong it would have been a lot easier to fix without the tubes already installed.

@@DIY_or_DIE I hope you are using a bonding agent between layers. Hate to see problems down the years with water seeping in between the two layers.

@@DIY_or_DIE Not in a foundation pier. Saw it on a slab that was added to part of an existing slab.

@centexan ahh, gotcha. Well I can understand that for sure, but these piers and footings are tied together with the rebar so I don't think it will be an issue.

@@DIY_or_DIE leveling the pier and floor, you would not need to do lines and work around them, and squaring things to each other

Stay tuned and you'll see more laser leveling. I also used it for setting the Batter Boards. Didn't need it for setting the rebar because I had already squared my center lines.
