DIY or DIE
Приєднався 29 лип 2011
Welcome to our channel! We are Justin and Lil, plus four kids and a baby on the way! We have been living full time, off the grid (no public utilities), in a 28ft RV while pursuing our dream of building an offgrid homestead on 18 acres of raw land. Our goal is to DIY as much of the house build as possible. We are also striving to build the house debt free through the entire process. Between the RV, vehicles, homestead, Solar power system, and the house build, there are always a million things that need to be done and never enough time. The art of DIY has become lost in this consumerist world that encourages buying, trashing, and replacing instead of living simply, creating things, and repairing them. Also, DIY saves tons of money! Our hope for this channel is that by sharing our journey, it will inspire and encourage others to pursue their dreams!

#DIY #offgrid #House #Build #homestead In this video, we officially put green Zip sheathing behind us, and move onto the roof! We begin to lug the 2x8x16 ceiling joists onto our pier and beam off grid house. It's no easy task, but Justin employs a lot of ladders, a platform from "The Lowes", brute forearm strength and sheer will-power to heave the joists up onto the 10 ft walls. We will observe...

#DIY #Offgrid #House #Build #surprise In this week's video, we battle the heat as we push hard on the wall framing. We continue raising the 10 foot walls of our off grid house build with dramatic flair. We cannot safely lift these heavy 10ft walls with double French door and window headers, so we use the Kubota L47 tractor and snatch block pulley systems. It's sometimes a challenge to find a go...

#DIY #offgrid #house #build #solar In this video, we begin framing the first massive 10 foot wall for our off grid, pier and beam foundation house. #offgrid #diy #build #house This week on our off grid house build... Thanks to some comments from fellow Diy builders, we decide to weather proof the subfloor by painting it with Behr outdoor porch and deck paint. This will better protect it from the elements as we work hard to get the roof on and the house dried in. After we finish painting the subfloor, we begin to lay out the walls for the m...
You can even wet your bandanna to help while working in the sun! I do that myself!
That's exactly what I do, great minds think alike 😄
Just a flat ceiling? No trays, domes, or barrel? Maybe coffered?
maybe just finish your house? These rules are in place to prevent people from abusing the permitting process. 2 years is plenty of time to get your house done.
i really enjoy watching your video s . i wish that they were longer
Thanks for joining us 😊 we try to make them as long as we can for y'all without too much dead time 😅

Hey Guys enjoy your channel! You should pop string lines across the rafters for your blocking. Two lines would keep you from having to measure each and every time. Great job, doing it all by yourself though.
I am really scared to see you work without safety glasses whilst working with the nailgun.
Thanks for joining us! We appreciate your concern and do our best to be safe at all times.

Why not turn the roof into a deck - great views and more living space!
That's an interesting proposition!
They (the gov't) do this on purpose and with very good cause....if they didn't do it, you'd have thousands/millions of half finished 'DIY' projects from folks with best intensions and dreams just like you... It sucks for people like you (hopefully) who are fully vested and WILL finish the project BUT it (and maybe you don't see this from your perspective) does WAY more good than harm. Imagine your neighbor/s doing the same thing...don't see it through/finish and then abandoned un-finishable homes/shops litter your community, bringing down prices and possibly attracting less then neighborly new clients. 2 cents.
I don't care what my neighbors do, as long as it doesn't not cause any harm, loss, or injury to me or my family. And if they did, it should be up to me to take them to court and prove it, not expect the Government to take away my freedoms to try and prevent my neighbor from doing something I don't agree with.
Nice job keep it up my friends🙂🙏
Thanks for joining us 😊
That hat protects the ears unlike the rag top. 😁
Yes, I like the hat better, but it doesn't breath and so hot...
Heat makes it really hard to concentrate and keep on track. Be careful.
Thanks! 😊
I walked on many a truss when building houses, barns, and shops. 1-1/2” sidewalk I called it . Just got comfortable with it. 😊
😄 it reminds me of getting my sea legs when I was in the Navy.
Are you putting up rafters? You keep calling it a roof but I’m wondering if that’s the ceiling. Or is this going to be a flat roof? Your boy building that platform reminds me of myself. Started building with my dad at that age. Good to see he is following in your footsteps. 😊
Our ceiling joists are also acting as rafter ties, so they are an integral part of the roof framing. Ridge board next, than rafters, sheathing and roof.
As I suggested before use a spacer board less time and fewer miss measuring!
Everyone's got their own methods, some may call it madness, others call it genius 🤷♂️
Seeing those ceiling joists in makes me think add a plywood floor a 3 ft. knee wall and roof and put a couple big bedrooms upstairs for some bunkbeds in each with room for closets and desks
Yes, that would be amazing, but at this point we just need to get this roof on and move on. Once we are living in the house we will look at a two story addition.
Second story requires 2x6 lower walls. Load would be different for the ceiling joists
Can she clamp a block on the chopsaw to make repetitive cuts??
Honestly, it's not that hard to just measure, mark, cut 🤷♂️ good experience with the measure tape, but maybe we will try a backstop some day.
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Lou!
nice work

Justin and Lil, I've been watching your channel since you started building your house. I am enjoying each episode. I'm in southeast Georgia also. Just curious as to what part y'all are in. Keep up the good work. Love your family.
Hey Kirby, thanks for joining us on our journey! We are in Southeast, Georgia, so I'm sure you know exactly what we are feeling when we talk about heat and humidity and rain storms 😄
How wide is one spot ?? 😮 😅 13:32
I love y'all and your Channel. But dang, the way you guys are building this house is so financially wrong. I understand building something to last, but you've over-engeneered this thing to the heavens. You could be building this house for THOUSANDS less than what you're doing. I mean from the foundation right up to now. Don't get me wrong, y'all are doing amazing things and this house will be amazing, but man,....so much money could have been saved.
Thanks for joining us on this week's update! Yes, we are intentionally building above the minimum code standards in many cases, for good reasons! Since we are doing all the work ourselves, we are actually saving tens of thousands, if not hundreds...maybe we will do videos about material cost in the future, but surprisingly, I do not think the additional cost for material upgrades were much more costly than going with the minimum code standards... We know of people who have had issues with undersized roof framing and fixing any issues down the road will cost tens, or even up to hundreds of thousands, depending on the house. Also, we want this house to be around for generations, and our building inspector agrees it will be 😄 At the end of the day, we are doing what we think is best for our family. I'd rather pay a bit more up front to prevent issues down the road which could be much more costly 🤷♂️
Have you guys told what you’re having (baby)?
It is going to be a surprise, for us too 😊
@@DIY_or_DIE I’m betting a girl…..
Great progress Justin, I don't feel so bad, I made the same mistake on my garage build, it was my son that caught it, thank goodness, keep up the good work, it's looking great!
Thanks for the encouragement, Donnie! Good lesson to always double/triple check our work 😅
Hello To Both Couple And to Your Kids Love You Guy's ❤❤❤❤💐💐💐💐🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

Selalu penasaran dengan perkembangannya.... saya mau tanya apakah rumah ini di bangun 2 lantai?
Thanks for joining us! This house will just be single floor.
@@DIY_or_DIE ok terima kasih infonya
What state you on you just said southeast Georgia thought you were in Florida?
We are FL born and raised, but we reside in south GA currently.
It kind of freaked me out when you pointed that nail gun at yourself to nail that block in, if you missed, you could’ve been a goner
Don't be hard on yourself you got it before you put all the boards up. doing a fine job
Thanks Robert ❤️
14:49 Perhaps a framer would know fer sure, should the ceiling joist line up vertically with a stud below (*they should stack, aka stacking)? Obviously It's not possible for every joist. Albeit, if you stack the joist to a stud below the roof truss on the same top plate would end up 1½- inch offset to the same stud. (Thanks for reading, lol.) Incredible progress, btw, with you folks working regular jobs.
Hey there, thanks for taking time to ask the question! Since we have a double top plate, the rafters do not need to stack directly over a stud. It is required if there is only a single top plate, though.
Everyone has one of those days. Mine are daily.
😅
Coverage on your ears, neck, and nose are sorely forgotten. While top of head is first and most important when it comes to skin cancer problems later on in your late 50s, don't listen to others when it comes to your health. I had serious skin cancer and it's no joke. The doctors said to me that I must have been outside a lot without sunscreen when I was younger.
Always enjoy and the work is coming along great. Videos are just to short.
Thanks for joining us for this week's update! we make them as long as we can for y'all ❤️
I've been waiting for days for this video. :) Good work. The fans and misters are smart. I'd suggest measuring out a jig and add a stop block to the circular saw as well as a table behind for the material. That way you can cut everything without having to stop and measure each cut. Also, if you stage the rafters up through the high ceiling area you can then move them down to the lower area without having to pick your way through all of the walls. I can't wait to see more progress and the little helpers are hilarious!
Thanks for joining us for this week's update! The fans have been a life saver, along with LMNT 😄 good tip for the rafters, they are going to be a challenge to get up there!
@@DIY_or_DIE Yeah, good luck with that! As I said in the previous video, you may want to off load them from the tractor direct into the house and not use the stairs. Just line the tractor up so they are level with a door or window and unload them. If your tractor had a bit higher reach you might be able to get them right onto the ceiling joists that are already up. Are you using the boards with bad warp/crown for blocking or returning them to the store? Love seeing the kids building too, that brings back memories!
I figured you were in the south somewhere with the roof you were building.
What gave it away?
@@DIY_or_DIE Truth is, I was confused at first after seeing the pine trees all around you, but it finally hit me (before you said anything) that you had to be somewhere that had pine trees, but not a bunch of snow...thus somewhere in the south. Logic.
😊 very sound logic!
You do have a swimming pool, that rain will keep it filled
We love the rain, if it could only hold off on our work days that would be great 🤣
Got a question for you bud was you in the service
Yes Justin is prior Navy.
@@DIY_or_DIE hell yeah thanks for yer service bro
Hey sister and brother, my grand dad always said, if you don't make mistakes then you're not doing anything. You can always work through them. Keep hydrated and be careful. Your brother in Ocala,Fl. God bless your family and keep your family safe.

Aren't those trees to close to the house ?
They are all young and healthy pines, very strong.
