Owner of a 2019 X3 M40i in black. I’ve had cars like the Golf R, A45, M3 comp and X3 is by far the most enjoyable car IMO, best of both world. I am always driving with Sport Individual with everything set in sport plus except for steering and damping where they are in comfort. Engine is great just keeps on pulling and has the gearbox to match it. Just an all-rounder. I don’t find the suspension too harsh given the cars I’ve owned in the past. The start up always put a small on my face regardless of cold or warm start. 2.5 yrs of ownership with no complaints.
Really really like the overall design of the X3. I've been seeing a lot of them in that matte grey colour and it really suits the car. For some reason I really love the look of the tail lights and the way they stick out from the rest of the body.
I got a 2020 X3 xDrive30i as a new family car back in late 2020. Im not a fan of BMW, but the wife does, have to admit a nice family SUV. I would imagine the M40i will be a nice performance upgrade to the xdrive30i.
Done 200k Kms in our X3 20D. Awesome family car with our 3 young kids. Very practical car, the only blemish is the run flat tyres. Oh, and the fact it isn’t an M40i 😂
Is great all-rounder. Quick, practical, all-paw traction, with the heart of a sports car (Supra). Not thirsty and not over-pricey, given what’s on offer. Awesome sound as well. Best in class imho.

An owner of 2019 X3 M40i, still loves the crackles and pops from the cold start / sports plus exhaust. This car is just so good to drive, I have got an ever better experience coming from my previous F30 gen 330i
@@CarExpertAus The ride has always been consistent with your verdict - firm, but yes the adaptive suspension does help a bit over bumps but overall you can always tell if the roads are not even and the steering wheel will always react base on the road surface quite quickly as well. But overall long term driving on the country road is still pretty comfortable IMO. But saying that I am very used to the run flat tyre noises after driving BMW for many years.
Go check out/test drive a Mazda CX-5 Turbo(base model). Just picked mine up last week, such a blast to drive and very luxurious inside. Seems very comparable to this and less than half the price, I actually prefer the look too. Maintenance and repairs are cheaper plus you can use regular gas(which is definitely nice these days). Great review Paul. I picked up my X3 M40i about 8 weeks ago, after having an X5 50i the last few years. I love the straight 6 but I do miss the character of the V8. Damping around town is better than I expected .. similar to the X5 despite this car being on 21s (20 on X5). Only blemish so fas has been the tyres.. have had two flat tyres in 8 weeks, one maybe from a pot hole, one puncture. Tyres are mega expensive compared to the (wider) X5 rubber and hard to get. Flat tyre in Jindabyne resulted in a flat bed truck trip to Canberra and 2 day wait to get a tyre. Looking at aftermarket 19s as 21s are clearly not suitable for anything outside metro areas. Best feature so far, autonomous driving. Will do full hands free driving under about 30kms per hour, which is awesome in Sydney peak hour traffic.
Anyone considering this but not trying to spend that much should look at the Mazda CX-5 Turbo. It basically has all these features plus cooled seats, heated steering wheel, remote start, heads up display, quieter / smoother ride, wireless charging. My experience with wireless charging on my former '19 230i xDrive was that it was a very slow charger that seemed to heat up the iPhone more than charging it. I did not option it on our ordered x3 M40i.
Did you ever get an answer about the seemingly poorer performance of the BMW laser light? This is a wonderful little SUV but I’m not a fan of this particular colour.
I agree with you on this "chalk" color....was initially attractive but now is so prevalent with many manufacturers, it's no longer special. We ordered our 2023 x3 M40i in standard classic BMW Alpine White. Too bad.....they no longer offer the Glacier Silver that was on our '14 328xi Touring...loved that combination with the red leather interior.
What is the dimension of the red suitcase that you use in your reviews (i.e, HxWxD)? It would also be great to know the boot dimensions as it would be very useful for people like me that lug around golf bags, buggies, larger items around.. Most car reviews just show the boot but don't go any further in terms of measuring the HxWxD... Thank you Paul and keep up with the great reviews..
Great review Paul! Love the new X3 , I have the G01 30d for last 3 years and that’s a great straight six diesel with better fuel economy. I have a question re the tyres if you don’t mind - tossing up between the factory Pirelli run flats and Michelin Pilot 4S , what would you recommend? (mind you the wheels are 20 inch, so not as bad but still..)
I drove my mates x3 and its pretty good but after 130k its starting to give trouble n its not cheap to fix, so my choice is lexus 450 h and ordered one. Lexus might not be punchy as this as per many car reviewer but i know i did right choosing lexus.
Well, you can say that to pretty much every car out there, not just the x3, so to single out the x3 just because your mate's x3 has issues is biased. Too many factors come into play as to why it has issues after "x" amount of kms, same goes for any car. So, just keeep in mind that this could happen to your new Lexus as well.
@@TN_AU not really “every car out there”. Japanese cars (and Korean cars these days) just keep going and going. Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, they’re reliable and trouble free and you’ll easily get to 200,000km. Anything American or Eurotrash, good luck. It might get there but with you spending half the value of the car in the process. Sure you can have a perfect BMW or a dodgy Lexus but in the long haul the Japanese earned their reputation for reliability. Audi, BMW, Mercedes, a huge amount will become repair nightmares, don’t even get me started on Italian, French and British cars, they’re a league of their own at the BOTTOM of reliability charts.
I just got fully spec'd and blacked out BMW 330i M Sport with comfort and visibility package from BMW dealer here in Vic. What a car, having a blast on that sport mode keeping suspension on comfort as part of individual adaptive mode. It is a mile muncher. I am trying really hard to avoid speed fines hahaha
Macan too expensive and way too small for me. SQ5 nice but no where near sporty as the other rivals. Mercedes GLC LOL its just nice. Thats it. Bought the X3 M40i. Thank god I bought the 2019 version. I cold started the 2021 M40i and no more crackle and pops. Now its more farting noises.
@@Saltwat5 Cool, I’m not fussed by it at all, I think the taillights on the X3 and X5 have destroyed the looks from the rear and the front has too many weird angles around it air intakes which seems to be creeping into most new BMW’s, the profile and colour is just “meh” which for me unfortunately is the most successful styling point (profile). BMW’s used to be handsome vehicles but they’ve been all over the place since the “Bangle” debacle which is to say the styling department has been pretty hit and miss. 🤷🏻♂️

@@User-cb4jm I'm not sure what all that means sorry. I asked if this car has it. That's all.
No cooling. only heating.
You can option cooling on the standard seats but not if you get the Msport seats, then it’s only heating.
Nice car
it should come with wireless car charger, as new bmw has keys on your phone as well
My experience with wireless charging on my former '19 230i xDrive was that it was a very slow charger that seemed to heat up the iPhone more than charging it.
I love this car ❤🫶👌🔥
Great review Paul! Love the new X3 , I have the G01 30d for last 3 years and that’s a great straight six diesel with better fuel economy. I have a question re the tyres if you don’t mind - tossing up between the factory Pirelli run flats and Michelin Pilot 4S , what would you recommend? (mind you the wheels are 20 inch, so not as bad but still..)
Michelin Pilot Sport 4s are the best tyres 🛞👍🏼
Pretty
What is the point if you have to wait months or even a year for your car - all the cars reviewed here are going out-of-date while you wait.
@@TN_AU stats say otherwise, lexus is ranked higher than bmw in reliability
Go read the car of the year review of the new Lexus in wheels magazine. From what I’ve heard Lexus are not that durable or reliable either
@@User-cb4jm yes valid point.
Are you buying this one too/
Hah. Not this one.
Most common colour of any BMW or Mercedes I see is always white. Seeing how costly any other option is, I can now see why.
Beautiful car, but how about reliability and durability
Don’t worry they’re more reliable and durable than most
It’s a BMW so meh. Most cars half the price will outlast this, Toyota, Mazda, Honda, etc.
$120k.......personally would chose BENZ-GLC 43......interior and exterior is more premium.
I priced the GLC43 before I got the X3 but it was about 40k more expensive
I might be alone in this but I don’t think it’s particularly attractive at all although I will say this colour way does it no favours.
I think you’re alone, looks awesome for a family SUV especially in that colour
@@Saltwat5 Cool, I’m not fussed by it at all, I think the taillights on the X3 and X5 have destroyed the looks from the rear and the front has too many weird angles around it air intakes which seems to be creeping into most new BMW’s, the profile and colour is just “meh” which for me unfortunately is the most successful styling point (profile). BMW’s used to be handsome vehicles but they’ve been all over the place since the “Bangle” debacle which is to say the styling department has been pretty hit and miss. 🤷🏻♂️
You’re not alone. The styling is a bit off and white is never a nice colour, just so plain.
Your not alone overpriced vehicle and interior is not up to date and all those features and soft touches not good enough the genesis gv70 3.5 with a lux package eats it for breakfast with forty thousand dollars less
A Volvo XC60 Recharge will be a similar size car to compare
