Tomas, I love your videos, very thorough. Keep up the great work! As far as USA pricing goes, the upgrade from base X3 engine to M40i is approximately $14K now and well worth it. I believe the difference was a little less back in December, around $11-12K. We just bought this car with tons of options. I think the European pricing may be much higher. You can get the M40i for high $50s to low $60K, depending upon options. You made an issue of the pricing. It's definitely under $70K fully loaded in USA. This BMW SUV is made in USA factory,, so maybe that's why it's cheaper (for us?) We ordered it in December and we got it in 1 month, even with all the shortages.
The M40i isn't really "double the price" of the base model. I have ordered a '22 M40i over the 30i because BMW made a number of options only available on the 40i. A few years back I could have optione a 30i exactly like the M40i. The price difference was under $10k US between the two vehicles.
Interesting Review Thomas. I except the points you made on price and the X3 range opinions you have. Personally, after exhaustively testing competition (Audi, Mercedes, Volvo, Alpha Romeo, Genesis, Lexus, etc) in this market segment, from base model to sportier high-end models, this BMW M40I in my opinion hits the sweet spot across the X3 range and all other manufacturers ranges. Due to this, I ordered and will hopefully take delivery in UK, on the 20th April, as it has just come out of production at the Rossyln Plant in South Africa. The only 3 additions i did not upgrade and pay for, were, M Sport Seats (Uncomfortable unless on race track), Laser lights (Pointless on UK bendy and undulating roads and the Adaptive LED are really good anyway) as £1500 option, unless doing illegal speed of 200mph, adds no benefit and last of all, a towing hook, as have no need to tow. Choice is ultimately a personal thing, just as liking the look of something or not, as it is why we are all married to different people or have different partners! This BMW X3 M40I looks the part, while still being a drivers car and not a space-ship, as most cars are heading towards. I will remain with ICE until UK law takes away my freedom of choice in 2030, where an EV switch will have to happen. To me, a BMW should be black or white, just as a Ferrari should be Red and a Jaguar, racing green. So, I've gone for a non-metallic white, 21 inch wheels with red break callipers, black interior seating with blue stitching and full tech, professional pack, comfort pack, panoramic roof, etc. Only disappointment between this and pre LCI, is wireless phone charging, rear heated seats and the rear boot lowering leavers have all been removed (Don't know why the boot lowering seat leavers have been removed, as didn't think they were electronically or microchipped activated!). I first ordered a new X3 on April 30th 2021. So, this X3 will have taken just under 12 months from point of order and deposit made, to its arrival. I change out the summer tyres and put-on All Season run-flat tyres on the 21inch wheels. Done so with my current X5 40d M BMW. Changing wheel size and running winter tyres in UK is a waste of money in my view with the limited snow days we have. Hope this feed-back was of interest. You remain my go-to for UA-cam Car Reviews, great work.
thanks for the feedback m8 and congrats :) Hope you went for the new perforated Sensatec seats 🙂 How do you know it is coming from South Africa? Did the dealer say? Afaik when you are in EU or UK, you can both get South Africa and Spartanburg built ones. And as I heard, M40i are only built in Spartanburg as far as I remember?
@@autogefuehl I ordered my M40i in Poland and as far as I know it will be built in the USA. I hope they will deliver it on time, order from the end of November, delivery planned for May 2022. I heard that in US it takes 2 months from oder to delivery.
@@autogefuehl From the VIN number, it will identify where it is produced/manufactured. UK BMW, via my local BMW Dealership, send me electronic forms that always state build location (With Build Location ID Number), plus loads of other information, on my formal requested updates with order, build and delivery progress. Excellent review. I had a 2018 X3 3.0d M and am replacing it with the same engine and M series 2022 model in Brooklyn grey. I will not have to read the manual….as thoroughly after viewing your video. Thank you.
Thomas...I've enjoyed your videos for a number of years...I miss Germany and the autobahn drives as I lived in Griesheim for 3 years back in the late 70's. We've had a '14 328 xi Sportwagon and recently sold our '19 230i xDrive. We now have an order for a '23 X3 M40i and your review was very helpful in our decision process. I, like you, much prefer tactile buttons verses controls buried in the infotainment screen and the I Drive 7 is much preferred over the new I Drive 8. We also chose the base 19" wheels for their comfort factor and lower tire replacement costs. Thankfully, while indeed more expensive than the base X3, it was certainly not 2x more here in the U.S., if so, we would have elected the base X3 model in M Sport trim for sure. Too bad we can no longer take delivery in Munich (as we did in 2014). Vielen Dank!
Great review as always! How is the suspension in comfort mode comparing to an X3 30i in comfort? Are they both as comfortable, or maybe the 40i is a bit stiffer?
I really like the facelift versions of BMW and other manufacturers. Because instead of reinventing everything they fix and improve previous design and features. So we still have the great BMWs infotainment and a lot of physical buttons instead of capacitive BS, controversial design choices and downgraded infotainment trying to mimic Android phone UI.
I would be interesting in a video on the buying and service experience in Germany. I’ve bought several bmws in Japan which has fantastic amazing wonderful customer service. Lovely wonderful people at the Yokosuka bmw. However, upon my experience with bmw dealers in the US has been subpar. I recently gave my brother my m240i convertible because I hated taking it to the dealer for maintenance. It was a major culture shock for me. 😢 I’m curious about dealers in Germany or another European country. ❤ Thank you for your lovely videos.
On the jump to go for an X3 M40i, regarding your experience, can I (budget wise) go with good confidence for an 2018 model or are the improvements in the newer model definitely worth the higher price ? Thanks a lot for your feedback, would be highly appreciated !
