So after what may have felt like quite a long process, I have finally bought my new daily, which means it is time to say goodbye to my BMW X3 M40i. I've owned the car for nearly two years and put around 17,000 miles on the clock. In this video I tell you everything about it.

Your channel has to be one the only car channels I’m not getting bored of
Gotta disagree Sam the physical buttons are essential. Very nice car. That tyre pressure warning system would drive me insane. Nice video. Looking forward to the next daily. Keep up the good work.
You loved this car Sam. Doesn’t look tired in styling. Does look a little everyday german SUV. Is / was it a pcp. Hence time to go. Get another ‘daily’ is good for channel. I bet you’ll miss the solid X3. Uncertain why it must go but I have cars I love I myself move on. Suspect was creamy engine that kept your love and easy cabin to live with.
Apparently you can just flash new software for the full screen Apple car play in a matter of minutes.
I bought my 2018 X5 M Sport last year and have experienced the EXACT same issues with it as you described -- randomly picking up slow punctures and I manage to open my rear tailgate about 3x a week at work. Otherwise, love the thing!!
How did you solve your tyre punctures in the end? Have you tried non-run on flat tyres maybe, or something?
Save a whack of money and get nearly the same fun with the six cylinder diesel which is shockingly good !
Rocket missile it's.....love it. Better than x5 with price and rear seats recline
It’s listed as 20” wheels, they’re the 21”, tell Tony 😂
My S6 has been in the shop for 3 weeks here in US. I've had a new q5 s-line on rental from the dealer and I've LOVED it. In America, that competes with the X3 M40i maybe I should test drive one. Thinking about getting it for my wife.
Not… the SQ5 competes with the M40i.
when you say MPG maybe mention you mean UK mpg vs USA as you have larger gallons there
That black gti looks so good with the yellow English plates 👍
So an advertisement for Tony 😁 then. I wonder if that’s a BMW our split new MINI clubman and we found our rear boot doors open coming back to it in car parks. 🤷🏼♂️ So much so we now make sure we walk away hiking the keys in our hands not in our pockets.
He said it has all technology but doesn’t have the Driver Assistance Professional which is the biggest technology pack it can have.
Your next car is going to be a bmw 2 series active tourer isnt it!!!
Always forget how good this sounds
Couldn't like the IG post because of having to wait another week for the new car news; but I'll like this film! :P
lol that stock footage from 2012 confused me - thats my boy advert on the side of the bus
Awesome, it's BACK up to view 🙂👌🏻
Hi
I have a M40i slightly newer than yours and it does not have the same tyre pressure sensor issue. I suspect it's a faulty sensor?
I had a 530d with the same fault, I had it coded out in the end
You’re killing me Sam! Show us the new daily or I’ll spam Stelvio pics in your insta!
I have an IX3 on order but think I want one of these now 😁
I had a fully loaded 2020 model, left me cold so I sold it after 5 months.
Had the M wingback seats which were too firm for a comfy car and it wasn’t sporty enough for a sports car.. don’t think I’ll get another “sporty” SUV!! I can’t really believe Sam kept his so long, I doubt he’ll miss it now it’s gone (oh and my wife was equally gutted when we sold ours!)
BMW have had the same problems with sensitive tyre pressures for well over 10 years, not sure why it is
If you think the TPMS is bad on this, then try a Renault Captur. Seriously bad.
Regarding picking up nails on your run flats, I totally resonate. I have a BMW with run flats and I feel like I pick up nails a lot too. Tony even mentioned this in one of your BTG podcasts a few episodes ago. Perhaps these run flat tires really do pick up nails easily.
Is it just be or does it look like the carplay thing has a fullscreen button in the bottom right?
1:20 keep it dirty so the buyer can’t see the scratches. Classic take the hire car back strategy.
Curious what you got because the X3 is a damn fine car, hard to beat that.
Tony on the cigs 12:16
How does it compare in size to a Gen 1 X5?
Oh come on!!! At least reveal the new one, your going from funny teasing to annoying cliffhanger now! We want to know!!!
I have had my X3 M40 for 3y and half now and my appraisal is very similar to yours. A great all rounder, difficult to fault it. I had some issues with the tyres too, I guess the combination of run flat, low profile and 21' make them very vulnerable. The only 2 things I would slightly disagree on: I find the engine sound in the cabin really awful, 100% fake. So much so I turned off the sound generator by coding, as a result you can barely hear the engine now from the inside (despite an exhaust which is quite loud) but I prefer this to the fake noise still. Confort wise, while I don't have millions of data points to compare against, comfort on bumpy and rough B roads is okay but I would not descrive it as outstanding, the ride is still a bit too harsh in my opinion. But as you said, certainly a compromise 1000% better than the X3M.
Is it more reliable than lexus?
Have my X3 M40i for 1 year now and can second everything that you are saying. No issues with the tire pressure yet. Absolutely love this car. Prefer it to the bigger X5 (despite the terrible roads here and missing air suspension). Gonna put her on Michelin Pilot Sports for the summer see if that makes a difference for the terrible Alenza runflats. I hear it does.
@@yesitsme8943 the ride quality is clearly affected by these run flats. I need to replace my tyres soon so I will look at non-run flats, hopefully the wheels allow that. I can't remember whether the video mentions MPGs, but it's not a strong point either. I average 28 UK mpg while driving at legal speeds in the UK (mainly motorway and B roads) but can go much much below that when putting the hammer down. Relative to its performance, volume, weight, and tyre size, such fuel consumption has to be expected. The B58 engine is a master piece, but could do with a bit more umpf at the top end. Anyway, despite that, great car.
@@jeromeuk Yea I think the MPG gets too much praise in other vids. It's terrible for me. I do 16 MPG. But that's with 90% city driving. Granted mostly in eco pro (dog in the back). When I drive alone I drive comfort and motor way (not highway) sport plus. Still I absolutely love this car.
Funny my mate. Is after one of these 😁
After listening to all the accolades, why in the world are you offing it???? weird
👍
Hideous
I’d love for someone to conduct a survey regarding actual buttons vs touch screens. Seems companies have made the decision for us just bc an iPhone is a touch screen. I hate touch screens in cars myself.
Buttons are essential for climate control. I appreciate a touch screen infotainment system for Apple CarPlay. The new Range Rover has gone back to more buttons.
Screens are way cheaper to manufacture, that’s a big reason. Plus, manufacturers save even more money by spending less time in design and development.
For the Carplay, you need to get the car coded to be full screen. Its got the feature but BMW don't activate it from factory!!
Did this dude really complain about tpms sensors reading weird then immediately go over how he runs over a bunch of nails? Immediately followed with more shit he does himself on accident
It's such an underrated car 🔥
In america we need suv in the city because cars fall into potholes and are sometimes never seen again 😅
With the apple carplay, the half screen was like that on my GP3. But there is an coding app that will let you change it to full screen. Its called bimmercode.
Does this actually work? Thanks!
@@Mrbonzo69 it does mate
@@Mrbonzo69 Bimmercode
Cracking review Sam. I had a M40i for about 15 months, and as you say a great SUV, mated with the phenomenal B58. Mine didn’t have the tech pack (had the other ones including Pano) so I had CarPlay coded, and that was full screen. By the way, you seem to also have the adaptive suspension, which i did too, and that is WAY better than the normal m sport suspension. adaptive with the 21's is amazing as you say. and yes, i also opened the tailgate by mistake, so got my dealer to code the key so that it would not open unless the car was unlocked and that solved that. looking forward to the reveal of your new daily.
Curious to know, how do they drive?
Do they drive like a taller 3 series as some people say?
Is M40i reliable?
@@JIMMY-ck1oe best engine BMW build apparently
@@nprinslo Is the engine with X1?
@@JIMMY-ck1oe No, only X3,X4 etc
Your videos always make me smile, love you and your content and will keep watching for ever, thankyou for the last 6/7 years
This was just "click-bate" you are milking the fact you're getting a new car! You should have announced it not spent half an hour explaining how good a car was that you didn't like and no longer own. My first 👎 for one of your videos because this was the sort of 🐂💩 Shmee 150 would have done (and I no longer look at his channel).
X3s are such a great car. Loved mine, handled so well with the adaptive suspension over all sorts of roads and could get so much in it 👏
did you notice any oil consumption issue?
We have a 30d, amazingly good all rounder for 2 kids. The Apple Car play can be fixed with coding to give the full screen experience. Great review, as always! 👍
Same car play issue on my Porsche - where can the coding be done?
Tony always makes me laugh 🤣 What a guy 🤣
Sam, why so few videos of the super DEFENDER that you had on trial for several days? why why why why? ? ?
8:20 that triangle is giving me PTSD, bmw owners will understand
3:54 "Thank you Door!" (Missed Opportunity! - Shouldv been playing artist: The Doors)
Whats up with the respray on your F360???? too long waiting !!!!
Bangs on about the tech, but most of the stuff he talked about is standard on new Kia’s etc?? That interior is outdated
I'm lucky to have the newer x3 m40I LCI with cognac leather. It's a great all-rounder and BMW has improved some of the negatives listed in the video, like wider apple car play and new "hey BMW" voice assistant.
An F-Pace SVR would be the obvious choice for you
Interesting conclusion Sam. However imo the M340i Xdrive Touring does everything the X3 can do and more.....
He said in an older video that he considered the m340i but the X3 was way cheaper
And less... you sit lower and so can't see as well. It also has less suspension travel. Almost like they're different cars.
@@unprofesionel although the list price of the X3 appears to be £7k more in the UK so maybe he got a good deal on a vehicle in stock.....
@@colinw1591 At the time he got his X3, the m340 had not been out for long so finding an X3 was probably easier and you're probably right that he got a good deal on the X3, also Sam finances all of his cars as far as I know, so you would need to compare monthly payments, but I don't know if that makes a huge difference
@@colinw1591 It was because the X3 was cheaper on finance because the residual values are stronger, even though the car is more expensive list.
From my perspective there’s not such a thing as a car good for everything. There’s an equilibrium of opposite forces. If you want sportiness you lose comfort. If you want an spacious interior it will be harder to park and manouver. If you want to drive off-road the car won’t be agile on the road. If you like higher cars it will affect dynamics. It’s just a matter of how much of this characteristic are you ready to trade for that other (and budget). For me “good for everything” means always mediocre.
Checked the pics on Gravelwood and I would have this minimalistic, tranquil interior over Audi's or Merc's spaceship style all day long.
The tailgate / windows Randomly opening is a BCM body control
Module issue . Common issue in general across the range for the last 2 gens . Unlucky tony 😂
Voice activation - "take me home" and it'll nav you to your home address. Brilliant tech. Love my X5 but need 7 seats and the 30d is just fine
My Z4 with the same size screen is full screen on Apple Car Play so may be a settings thing as I can’t imagine they are using different systems across the range.
wen you see a bmw whit the steer on the wrong side right than it is whorles if you see the steer on the left good side than it is a propper bmw
Constant punctures suggest a wheel might be cracked - not unusual with the combo of hard run flats and big rims.
True these alloys bend for fun
Sounds like one of the circumstances where a lease might have made sense?
They are just brilliant these bmws. Had 5 series, 3 series touring, X5. All excellent, especially when you think about what you're going to replace it with, Sam ??
I’ve done the same thing with the tailgate 🤦🏻 Thing is though, it was throwing it down at the time 🙄
Based on what he says on this video he is not getting a defender 90/110 as the new daily haha
Sam, I have the M40d, the key thing is annoying but you can get a Faraday Pouch which will prevent any mishaps with the tailgate. I had an F15 X5 where that happened all the time. Looking forward to seeing what the next Daily is 😀
I have an x3m comp, and one of the main reasons i got it was due to the size, i looked at q8’s, RRS but they just seemed so big for uk roads.
I had an 840i brand new for a few months - lovely car, nice place to be, huge fuel tank (although huge expense to fill it up). It just wasn't very interesting or fun and I've had other German cars that had more personality, so recently sold it
Sam trying so hard to be down with the kids by claiming he listens to BBC radio 1. No one over about fifteen listens to that screaming bunch of loons. Of course off camera Sam is playing at number 11 Huey Lewis and the News, David Bowie and ABBA.
Don't know if you shared this before but would you tell how much the car depreciated taking into account for how much you purchased it and for how much you're selling it? I'm not interested in the prices, just the % side of the depreciation. Thanks!
Probably a hell of a lot!🤔🤫🙄
What mpg did you achieve driving around town mate
The Harmon Kardon system in that car is garbage.
Gotta say Tony has come such a long way with UA-cam. I remember back in the day when you first featured him in your vids I could see he was a little uncomfortable and stiff but now he's cracking jokes, having a laugh, and a bit of a character on your channel. And I love his insight on cars as well. Tony's awesome.
Or an utter prat depending on your point of view.
@@resnonverba137 Not really. He's awesome. It's either you agree with him or you don't. Don't have to personally attack him simply because your views aren't the same with his 🤨
The Apple Carplay and Android is a hit or miss in every car. It's not necessarily bmw's fault. Great review. I would have been slightly nervous driving past those cars on that narrow road.
25 mpg? I used to get 30 out of my M4 CP.
Thanks for sorting out the audio Sam.
Full marks, as per usual.
Great video.
Thank you.
Great drive train but averaging 25mpg is unforgivable in a daily surely
Depends too much on the driving routine. For mostly city driving and 6-cylinder SUV 25mpg isn’t too bad.
@@Wunderbaumsporting I guess (said in a squeaky man maths type way)

Nice one sammy, seems a brilliant car for the coin . All the best with the X5
X5?! What are you on about? lol
@@tunes4life it’s a bmw you nerd
Bro you can unlock the car play yo full screen
I think two years and 17K miles is totally a sufficient time to get a feel for a vehicle. If you haven’t decided to move on, I’m sure that you had many valid reasons why.
On my x4 2022 theirs a setting inside the menu that you can change to only allow the tailgate to open if the cars unlocked. This was after I had the same issue, haven’t had it since :)
i wonder if you dare to drive it till 100 k mile and still love it like now
shame on them with such prices they give a warranty only for 4 years or 50 k mile only
if they cant give a warranty for 100 k mile then they shouldnt stay in this industry
it means their cars are rubbish and dont deserve to be driven
then they talk about enviroment and so on but in the same time they force you to buy new car every 3 years or even 2 years
they just make fun of buyers
Experienced the same issues with tires and the trunk opening without me knowing it in my 2 years with a 328i. Had a Kia Stinger GT2 for 2 years after before selling it 2 months ago when moving cross-country (US) to a new city. Miss driving and the convenience of getting around easily, and I've had my eye on the X3 M40i for the last 3-4 years. So close to pulling the trigger haha, the little annoyances are worth it because of how great of a vehicle this is.
Best car UA-camr 😊
Everytime I see Tony I cannot drop that he is such a look-a-like of Kevin Pollak doing Lazlo in The Whole Ten Yards 2 from 2004 haha
My wife has a 2021 Mini Cooper S and the CarPlay in her car also shrinks to a half screen. There are some aftermarket software options available to go full screen, but should have an OEM button to decide.
The carplay isn't a setting but any decent coder could have coded it to full-screen in matter of minutes :)
I have heard that BMWs would be more prone to punctures than other cars. I never believed that claim but I am doubting that it might have something to do with the run-flats! So they might actually be the reason for the punctures! 😅
Funny, I have the same rear hatch opening by itself "thing" too. Seemed to happen more frequently when I'm wearing jeans.
Oh wow. I do the same thing with my X3 and the key. A couple of nights the back has been open probably the entire night. It’s an issue.
I'm curious to see what replaces it :D
The key thing happened to me a couple of times with my BMW Convertible.. Key in pocket in the house, was bending down for a bit and when I looked out of the window the car roof was midway between open and closed..
I have the same generation pre-LCI X3 20i, but from 2020 and my car play and android auto are full size. No idea what influences this, maybe a difference in software update version or tech packages, but it can be done through coding if anyone watching this is concerned about that.
these videos i think have a lot of potential.
but thats only because u actually used the damn thing for so long
genuine review, look at sam being a journalist XD
Can I Get A Heart???
Buy a 2022. Much larger screen, new idrive system and full screen apple Carplay.
