The harsh ride is almost exclusively due to the 21” wheels. When specified with the standard wheels and the adaptive dampers it rides very smooth. Had the same problem with my 2018.
I would never call the ride in this vehicle uncomfortable with any size wheel however as they mentioned, the ride can be jiggly / a bit bouncy as it is still tuned to be sporty.
A very accurate review. I agree the 21” (heavy) wheels are likely the cause of much of the giggly ride. I purchased a 2023 with the 19” wheels and I think the ride/handling is actually a bit too soft. I plan to use these for winter tires and will likely get a set of 9” square, lighter 20” wheels for summer use. That will likely be an ideal mix. In sport mode, the suspension is a bit overdamped, likely they dropped the spring rates a bit in the LCI and didn’t change the shock settings. Comfort seems about perfect for an SUV
Have a 2020 and originally came with 21" wheels with runflats and replaced it with 20" non run-flats. It was a minor improvement but I never thought the ride was harsh even on the 21s. However, I drove a 2023 X3M a couple weeks ago and I literally caught air in my seat going like 90 over a slight bump on highway on-ramp that I've never had a problem in my M40i. That was quite uncomfortable

(2) I got a set of forged wheels mounted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires for driving in all seasons except winter, and put a set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter tires on the stock BMW wheels. Now the car drives and looks better in the summer, and handles snow and slush like a champ in the winter. It is the perfect setup for this vehicle.

I've had my 23' M40i for a year and a half and I love it. Ride is sporty but not harsh which I was concerned about. Tech is great and it feels as big as my 13' X5 50i. My X5 ran a 12.8 1/4 mile and this feels quicker and now it is lower it will pull 1G in a corner which is great for any SUV. The rear bias makes this a fun car for any sporty driver. Once the warranty is up I will dump a few grand into it and tune it and I bet I'll have a 11 second family car. I hope the B58 and ZF trans become legendary. I went from an 18' F150 3.5L that ran 12.6 ET's but cornered like a truck so landed me in the M40i. I have no regrets. If your an audiophile you will need to upgrade which I planned on based on reviews. I replaced all the speakers, added a JL 12" sub, amp and a DSP but I have done that with all my vehicles. Any BMW or Toyota with the B58 will likely be a home run but only time will tell. You will be happy with any B58 car so just buy one.
'22 X3 M40i owner here (also in the same primer-colored Brooklyn Grey) - the ride can be a bit harsh but it has never really bothered me. I wanted something firmer than all the cushy stuff I have owned before. I do notice a big different on winter tires - much softer so I do think the summer RFT's are not ideal for soft cushy driving. Absolutely love the car though and would recommend it to anyone. It's plenty quick and still gets awesome gas mileage - especially compared to the true M's that are atrocious for gas mileage.
Re: "You don't need the big v8" (in the X5) If you want the upgraded suspension, 4-wheel steering, nice audio, and many other things. You have to get the V8. Also, if you want to tow, the V8 is a major benefit. It makes towing easy, since the engine can just cruise along at highway speeds without needing to constantly change gear. All that and I think the i6 model doesn't allow for disabling auto-start stop, though I may be wrong. So while it is true that you don't "need" the V8 in the X5, the X5M50i is a major upgrade over the base X5. Source: I've actually been in / driven both. Big difference, especially with the rear wheel steering and highway comfort.
I own a 2018 X3M40I and one of the 1st things I did was turn off the start stop function using bimmer code. It now has mst intake vtsf downpipe and mhd stwge 2 flash. For a 4400lb suv it is an absolute beast. Launches are insane and 0-60 in 3.8s

THIS! 5:39 I own this exact model SUV, but I would have rather had the M340i "Touring" wagon they get in Europe. I had to settle for the X3 series to get the B58 combined with the load space. It is a sad day when US customers have to settle for a CUV rather than getting the wagon they really want.
I‘m getting mine about March. I have already ordered the KW DDC Suspension and have 21“ Hamann Wheels at home. Will drive with non RFT. Think this will be a good combo and cant‘t wait to get it.

I've owned a 23' M40i X3 for about 3 months and agree with most of your comments. I really think the new mild hybrid system handles start/stop superbly and is extremely quick to come on, virtually seemless IMO; however, pro tip, if you are in sport mode than the start stop is disabled; you can setup a sport individual mode with more comfort like transmission tuning and get the desired results for a daily driver if disabling that feature is what you want. Also agree the ride is not luxury cruiser smooth but I feel like many reviews of the vehicle overblow the ride harshness IMO, it rides like a sports car; which is maybe not what everyone wants. I think the key takeaway is maybe avoid the bigger wheels. Overall love the car and the video.
I'm torn between this and the M340i... the M340i seems to have a better suspension and handles bumps better, slightly better performance etc but I love the raised seating position and extra interior room from the X3

That ending was perfect
In Australia, we don’t have the hybrid M40i so no weird start stop. We also have the IX3 which is pure electric
yea and you also pay double the price for the same car
Was this filmed in spring? The trees are getting fresh leaves
I just drove a 2020 X3 M40i that was traded in at my work, and MAN I wish I hadn’t. I want it so bad lol. Way nicer to drive than the GLC43 and SQ5.
How is the cornering...any body roll? Thanks, Joe
@@3joewj It's still an SUV so it has some amount of roll but definitely flatter than our VW Atlas.
Re: "You don't need the big v8" (in the X5)
If you want the upgraded suspension, 4-wheel steering, nice audio, and many other things.
Exactly! I’ll take the X5M50i any day !!
Picked one up in April. Couldn't ask for a better daily.
I love how they end their videos in these channel! 😂
If you get rid of the run-flat tires it rides much better 😊
The probably feeling the run flat tires with bumpy feel
You have to try the new jaguar f pace, the straight 6 or the svr
X3 M40i owner here. For stop and go function, I closed it by coding bimmercode
I own a 2018 X3M40I and one of the 1st things I did was turn off the start stop function using bimmer code. It now has mst intake vtsf downpipe and mhd stwge 2 flash. For a 4400lb suv it is an absolute beast. Launches are insane and 0-60 in 3.8s
is there a button above your ON OFF switch to turn off auto stop?
@@qna95B yes
@@DJZander01 i guess it doesnt remember the setting when you turn the car off then
@@qna95B correct. Not without bimmercode
Just bought mine today!
Wow have fun. I think I can only afford the 2020 or 2021 model 🤭
I used to have a 2019 and I miss it a lot.
This was posted three weeks ago but it’s clearly Spring outside. Did you review this six months ago?
My 2018 X3M40i on standard wheels has a really good ride, tried the X3M and ride was so hard & uncomfortable, engine sound and performance is brilliant. Interior quality of the X3 though nowhere near as good as my X5M50i or my wife’s AMG GLC43, BMW need to up their game at this level.
My 2023 BMW X3 M40i was picked up on 12/22/22 and is a serious bitchin’ car!!! Everything is black with red brake calipers and carbon fiber interior trim. I also got an amazing deal from the very nice guys at McKenna South Bay BMW in California!!!
Oh wow ! congratulations ! you picked up yours two weeks after mine. I also have a 23 X3M40i str8 from the factory. I have the black Sapphire with jet black 20 in hi performance non RFT (yoko) black shadowline blue calibers with tacora red interior. Also got the sport rear diff
@@Mr.Lambert777, I think our X3s are identical…it’s easier for me to just mention the three things I didn’t get. The spare tire, those rear seat window shades and the heated rear seat. Congratulations to you also!!!!!!
Ive owned one of these for a few months now and I absolutely love it
Same!
Haha love you guys! The editing and video cutoff is perfection
Mine is on 20in wheels with dsw6 Continental. Feel like real nice and smooth. My orignal run flats not so much
New cameras? the shots inside the car seem so much clearer
The ending is gold “where are we gonna cut the vid…”
Love the cut at the end. Typically clever.
I got a 2022 X3 20i
M petrol over here in the UK.
It's brilliant car for everyday use
Where we gonna cut the vide-... 😂👍 Top notch comedy
I bought one and it’s awesome. Makes a weird noise turning or going over speed bumps though
Can’t wait for my hug from James!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Had the opportunity to drive one of these around a small track, and let me tell you, the power is enough. The interior is solid, the B58 has excellent acceleration and sound, and the driveability was very good (first time in a BMW with this amount of power).
I have the X5 40i X Drive. Love the B58!
I have not experienced the jerky stop/ start. I wonder if it is because of the mild hybrid setup I have?
This vid was so convincing, considered X3 M40i, just went to test drive. While there, saw the new 24 X5 50e, drove, Sold! B58, w/ EV boost, plus larger smoother ride. Need to do a X5 50e vid
I don’t see an issue with start/stop cutting off and giving an abrupt power. It has mild hybrid and everything feels seemless. I just want to replace run flats for regular P4 tires
Yeah, the start stop feature doesn’t bother me when it does it. The mild hybrid helps it out tremendously. I have the jet black wheels with the high performance non RFT. I have Yokohama summer on my 23 x3M40i. I thought I was going to get Michelins but I am good with the Yoko
how does it compare to the New F pace?
Classic Throttle House en
Have 50k miles on my 2020 m40i. Ride and handling sucked even with stock 19” rft’s so I quickly used them up and put on a set of Michelin PS4 all seasons. What a dream. Handles great in all conditions and perfectly fine in the huge feb 2021 storm we had in PA. Not sure I’d go back to a sedan for a daily
Nice review keep up the good work
You should try the iX3. Unfortunately not available in NA…
That ending was crispy!
I want to sit high and ride sporty. This is perfect for me. We need more sporty suv’s.
Trying to decide what direction to go X3 M40i or X3M Comp...Man the price jump is huge but it's tempting to go full M Comp
Last time I checked there is no "serious" racing series for SUV's...so why bother with either.
@@gp1683 you seem so much fun
M40i. The X3 M is too stiff and you can tune the B58 into the S58’s power figure or close at least.
M40i and pocket the money for a second car (miata)
If you got it to spend go for the X3M. #NOBUYERSREGETS .. I wish I could afford the x3MC , but went with a well equipped 23 x3M40i , currently waiting for it to be build from the factory.
BMW X3 M340i AWD vs Porsche Macan AWD review please!
Best video editing...... ever! 👍 Not even a fade out at the end. Simply an abrupt cut off.😂
Love you guys
Haven't liked any of the primer Grey cars that are running around right now, but I'm not a fan of matte or flat paints on any car
Does your review of the X3 go for the X4s as well?
What focal length was this video shot on?
Please do a review on the bmw 540i, everyone reviews every b58 car except the 540i its so forgotten
What is going on with the seat behind James? Why is it so off from the rest?
U know there is a full electric version of this car right? the IX3
I'm torn between this and the M340i... the M340i seems to have a better suspension and handles bumps better, slightly better performance etc but I love the raised seating position and extra interior room from the X3
Unless you absolutely need a SUV, go M340i
