- The 2023 BMW X3 M40i ($69,400 starting in Canada, $59,870 starting in the US) aims to blend sportiness with versatility. The mighty B58 engine sits under the hood - the same turbo inline-six found in the Toyota Supra - and it makes a strong 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. But how does it handle daily driving? And did BMW find the suspension sweet spot where performance and comfort meet? Thomas and James share their thoughts. We hope you enjoy the episode. Subscribe!!

I see something with a B58, I instantly want it 👍
B58 is a masterpiece.
Shame they put it in such an awful, ugly, heavy, crap SUV like this.
@@DjNikGnashers you must love hating on this car. I’ve seen your comments 😂. Just accept that this x3 is a great car and move on.
@@Kamran1025 I don't like any ugly heavy SUV's so it's not just the X3, all SUV's are crap imo.
@@DjNikGnashers damn I feel bad for you
@@Kamran1025 Why ?
Don't feel bad for me little man, I'm fine.
I have a 455bhp/634nm M140i which only weighs 1480KG and has a nice low centre of gravity. I go out and smash SUV's every weekend, humiliating the owners.
You should have seen the smug Range Rover SVR owners face when my little hatchback fucking destroyed his 100+ grand house-on-wheels.
I let him catch me up and he wouldn't even look at me, sheer embarrassment.
It made me very happy, so no need to feel bad for me son, I'm a happy man.
This is peak x3. Good interior, sweet engine and sharp (BMW enthusiast approved) looks with massive drivability and convenience.
The M performance models in general are the best BMW'S. You get great performance and comfort at more reasonable prices.
@@kiplingordon wait whats the full M called, now all my recommendations videos are M340i; so in cars thats the M3 in SUVs is it called an X3M ??
bmw enthusiast cars died 15 years ago.
The harsh ride is almost exclusively due to the 21” wheels. When specified with the standard wheels and the adaptive dampers it rides very smooth. Had the same problem with my 2018.
I would never call the ride in this vehicle uncomfortable with any size wheel however as they mentioned, the ride can be jiggly / a bit bouncy as it is still tuned to be sporty.
The biggest problem is when they give you a run flat tire. You need to buy some Michelins with the soft sidewalls.
A very accurate review. I agree the 21” (heavy) wheels are likely the cause of much of the giggly ride. I purchased a 2023 with the 19” wheels and I think the ride/handling is actually a bit too soft. I plan to use these for winter tires and will likely get a set of 9” square, lighter 20” wheels for summer use. That will likely be an ideal mix. In sport mode, the suspension is a bit overdamped, likely they dropped the spring rates a bit in the LCI and didn’t change the shock settings. Comfort seems about perfect for an SUV
@@gregtoth2984 Good point on the spring rates... i agree this probably has something to do with it.
Have a 2020 and originally came with 21" wheels with runflats and replaced it with 20" non run-flats. It was a minor improvement but I never thought the ride was harsh even on the 21s. However, I drove a 2023 X3M a couple weeks ago and I literally caught air in my seat going like 90 over a slight bump on highway on-ramp that I've never had a problem in my M40i. That was quite uncomfortable
Bought mine two days ago and love it. It was a 10 month search for me to find a car I loved and your channel helped me a ton! Thanks! 😊
Every vehicle that BMW stuffs the B58 into turns to gold. Whatever formula they use to setup a car using this motor is absolutely perfect.
drove one today and i was amazed at how aggresive it was. the b58 is so good. Love the upshift farts
I have the 19 inch wheels and drove it down from Connecticut to Texas and it was comfortable and amazing! Love the car.
Fun fact: The B58 had to pass Toyota's stringent quality control. Thank you BMW for making this possible. And also thank you Toyota for letting BMW build a great engine.
Funny because a research group found BMW as 3rd most reliable car for this year
@@ertugrulbae46 its a shame we only have 3 choices🤷🏾♂️
Also the B58 was made wayyy before Toyota got involved
^marketing fluff. Link to what they changed? The B58 in its first form was already around for years before the Supra came out or got involved
@@HighJacker99 Not true. The B58 was made in 2015. BMW and Toyota's partnership dates back to 2012 😘
Had an X3 M40d (!). Still sounded great. 501ft lb of torque and 43mpg easy on the highway. Now that was a near perfect all you ever need car!
Always love your edits, so good
Please NEVER stop the abrupt cut offs! Love It! Lol
I won’t get tired of saying it. Your humor is on point and makes watching your videos more of a pleasure. Keep it up.
Thanks Thomas and James, you guys give great and entertaining reviews
I have to say, I have a '22 X4 M40i, and its the best of both worlds. A car that can fit your family, but also can have fun driving around. Especially after getting it tuned and getting a custom intake + exhaust.
What tune? 2022 X3 M40i owner here.
@@wesleywalls7582 basically all cars can be tuned, some car tuned better than others though and the B58 engine that’s in all BMWs with the “40i” has rapidly gained a reputation for being one of the most highly tunable engines. With a downpipe and e30 tune you’ll add 100+ hp for less than $1500!
It will void your drivetrain warranty though, many people wait until after the warranty is up before tuning.
B58 go brrrr
@@lamakicker69 yes, I understand tuning. I’ve done it before. I was just asking which tune you went with.
@@wesleywalls7582 I have a simple piggyback system racechip from aFe. Adds 50HP and 40lbs ft torque
Two things stood out - the halo style tail lights - thought I was the only one who noticed that good to know other nerds do too - and I loved hearing when you said you don’t drive an SUV like a car - every SUV feels like a compromise and I’m with you I just drive them slow and they feel like they are tugboaty to me
Picking mine up tomorrow, can't wait! I went on a test drive and fell in love.
This is hands down one of the Best SUV money can buy!
Wouldn't change a thing about it
Nah, the now ancient Macan still has it beat...the Porsche just rides properly, they know how to make sporty suspension that isn't just stiff and jiggly.
Well, you said one of the best because you know it’s not the best
Thanks for the up load!! Great vid. I looked snazzy once!
Just pure car talk. Respect
Great timing! We just picked up our new X3 M40i about 2 months ago, and it’s just perfectly in the sweet spot between utility, comfort and sport (though I do agree the busy suspension might be this cars one downside). Loving it so far!
What size tires do you have out of curiosity?
Haha love you guys! The editing and video cutoff is perfection
Oh, how I love this six cylinder sound. There's nothing that comes close to sounding this enchanting. Absolutely NOTHING. It's sporty yet verrrrrrry refined. It's a trombone like sound, it's....music! Wow 🤩
Nice review keep up the good work
Thank you brothers. I really enjoy your videos. I’m taking delivery of a 2023 X3 M40i in Dark Grey with the Red seats. I am so glad I went with the M40 than 330i.
buy these used. I got mine last summer 2022 and it was build in march and i bought it in august. 5 month old car and i saved 20k from brand new only 13k kms on it.
Mine is being delivered March-April of '23, never, ever in a million years would I have considered that fancy Hyundai instead of my X3 M40i. You two are much more likeable in the short video too, congratulations!
That ending was perfect
I've owned mine for a few months now and while it has minor quirks, I love it.
What quirks don’t you like?
@@redzoom7857 Suspension as mentioned in the video is a bit jiggly... not that big of a deal but could bother some. I also think Carplay at times has some issues connecting but that may be more of an Apple issue - it's not entirely clear. The last thing is the upgraded Harmon Kardon stereo is absolutely terrible... it should not have the HK name on it.
@@airpolskaweird.. I have the hk in my m340i and love it. Granted it’s also a smaller cabin compared to the x3

I keep telling all my buddies that the X3 is the best sport utility car on the market … My wife drives one and I just love it .. I drive sports car but if I ever buy a SUV I would buy the X3 M40i
20 inch wheel and non run flat tires makes a huge difference in ride quality. I ordered my '22 with regular tires after having a '20 with run flats and the fixed suspension. The adaptive suspension being standard now is great, it does seem to have more body roll in the stiffest setting compared to fixed m suspension but I can actually feel the suspension working. I drive like a crazy man in my X3 M40i. Thomas I'm 47 with a bad back I can't sit in a low slung car anymore, this works for me and I whip it like a 3 series, trust me.
I say that X3 DOES NOT handle like a 3 series sedan not even close. I drove both
@@borghorsa1902 I agree that it can't just based on physics, but I can keep up with most sports sedans weaving through traffic and on a back road. Thomas goes on about not not seeing the point of sporty SUVs , but I do if you're not on a track.
There was an X5M at my last track day, and that thing was faster than it had any right to be. It was keeping up with Porsche's.
that thing is a monster, yea
That ending was crispy!
0:37 i love how thomas knows so much about nature and animals
You can turn off the auto stop by programming your sport individual mode to all comfort. It's then comfort mode without the auto stop function.
Love you guys
Love the cut at the end. Typically clever.
This is my vehicle and I ADORE IT!!! I got the Adventurin Red which is hard to come by and it's such an awesome SUV!! First BMW and Love my purchase!!!
I‘m getting mine about March. I have already ordered the KW DDC Suspension and have 21“ Hamann Wheels at home. Will drive with non RFT. Think this will be a good combo and cant‘t wait to get it.
The end of that video was peak Throttle House humor and I'm here for it 🤣
Best video editing...... ever! 👍 Not even a fade out at the end. Simply an abrupt cut off.😂
i faced that same decision James was talking about and went with the X5 Xdrive40i. definitely not as fast as this car but with launch control its a proper shove and 0-60 in 4.9 seconds which is plenty quick for an SUV. Its a far more comfortable and high quality car than the X3. Sometimes i wonder if i made a mistake because the X3 is more fun to drive but the X5 really is the best all around BMW at the moment.
Same here, decided on the X5 M-sport because when it comes down to it, I was buying an SUV and not a sports car.
I had a loaner X5, however it was the base model. It felt like I was in a people pusher, not as nimble or fun to drive compared to the x3 m40i. I'm glad I got the x3, but If I had a large family, I'd go with the X5, they are both great vehicles.
only with a large family with two of the three kids being 13 plus and relatively large is the x5 the better pick, or if you're obese. I compare these often as a valet, one right after the other at times. X5 certainly is nicer inside, but it definitely isn't worth the useless amount of size that's been added.
Hade a ride in one today and it was amazing
2018 m40i owner. You guys touched on every point, it balances the best traits of all the suv's in it's class. Perfect blend of interior quality, tech, agility and of course the b58. Definitely agree the suspension is busy, especially with the 21" wheels. Definitely downsizing wheels helps with this but its biggest weak point IMO. Makes me trust your guys' videos, even more, when you guys so accurately describe what viewers have experienced.
Such a sexy vehicle. I was going to trade in my M340i for a 23 x3 M40i. Is there anything you DON'T like about it?
@@TheeRighteousOneewat year m340 did you have
Totally in love with my 22 x3 m40i in Brooklyn grey metallic.
Can easily code off the Auto Start Stop feature
My E70 diesel is my first BMW and I absolutely love it. I’m definitely getting this X3 for my next upgrade. Or… might have to go m340i. Haven’t decided if I need the space for another suv
I got a 2022 X3 20i
M petrol over here in the UK.
It's brilliant car for everyday use
Perfect car to live with and still have plenty fun
I have one. Can confirm.
I LOVE the writing on all the Throttle House videos. It's right up my alley. The ending of this video is a perfect example! Keep up the great work and reviews!
amazing ending 😭😭🔥‼️
I love how they end their videos in these channel! 😂
My 2018 X3M40i on standard wheels has a really good ride, tried the X3M and ride was so hard & uncomfortable, engine sound and performance is brilliant. Interior quality of the X3 though nowhere near as good as my X5M50i or my wife’s AMG GLC43, BMW need to up their game at this level.
I've had my 23' M40i for a year and a half and I love it. Ride is sporty but not harsh which I was concerned about. Tech is great and it feels as big as my 13' X5 50i. My X5 ran a 12.8 1/4 mile and this feels quicker and now it is lower it will pull 1G in a corner which is great for any SUV. The rear bias makes this a fun car for any sporty driver. I do at time wish I would have gotten the M340i but at the time I needed to tow. I'll get to the track this summer and hope for a middle 12 second run. Once the warranty is up I will dump a few grand into it and tune it and I bet I'll have a 11 second family car. I hope the B58 and ZF trans become legendary. I went from an 18' F150 3.5L that ran 12.6 ET's but cornered like a truck so landed me in the M40i. I have no regrets. If your an audiophile you will need to upgrade which I planned on based on reviews. I replaced all the speakers, added a JL 12" sub, amp and a DSP but I have done that with all my vehicles. Any BMW or Toyota with the B58 will likely be a home run but only time will tell. If I didn't drive 12k a year for work I would have an M car but currently it would not be practical and with 4 sec 0-60 what is the need unless you track your car. You will be happy with any B58 car so just buy one.
Just got mine, it is a really good SUV for the city too.
True. The Stop/Start is bad (rarely use it), the electronics acts-up occasionally connecting to CarPlay (really annoying the time it takes to adjust), and the steering is not Macan S-ish.
But the rest is better than the rest. Nice VIDEO!
Mine is on 20in wheels with dsw6 Continental. Feel like real nice and smooth. My orignal run flats not so much
Cannot unsee the Halo swords now on the road since the last video it was mentioned in and it's very distracting. Thanks a lot, Thomas!
In Australia, we don’t have the hybrid M40i so no weird start stop. We also have the IX3 which is pure electric
yea and you also pay double the price for the same car
I've just put Hankooks replacing run flats for my X5. Stops the jiggle and makes the feedback from the chassis better.
My 2023 is a blast to drive. High quality in almost every respect. My only complaint is the stock speaker. Not going for the upgraded sound system was a mistake.
Yessss! Same here! It’s not as bad but I should have opt for the harman 🤦🏾♂️ I have a 23 X3M40i
Agree that the X5 40i is one of the best cars in the current lineup. Very happy with mine!
Only had my 2024 X5 40i a few months, but it rocks. The sound of the flat six in sport mode is sublime. Mine has 22-inch wheels and non run-flat tires, but I’m good with the ride. The X3 is a little small for me, but I’ll bet it really moves with the B58.
YES !!!! THEY HAVEN'T PUT THE FUGLY INTERIOUR WITH THE NEW IDRIVE AND NO BUTTONS IN THE LCI !!!!!! THANK CHRIST !!!!!
Yeah, I agree. I hate the new S class interior too. Used to be so beautiful.
relax
Great to see BMW hasn't messed up the exterior styling on this one...yet.
I agree completely
I really think if all the things bmw are doing the interior is not the ugly bit 😂. I don’t mind the new interior but I do mind the exteriors
I used to have a 2019 and I miss it a lot.
My 2023 BMW X3 M40i was picked up on 12/22/22 and is a serious bitchin’ car!!! Everything is black with red brake calipers and carbon fiber interior trim. I also got an amazing deal from the very nice guys at McKenna South Bay BMW in California!!!
Oh wow ! congratulations ! you picked up yours two weeks after mine. I also have a 23 X3M40i str8 from the factory. I have the black Sapphire with jet black 20 in hi performance non RFT (yoko) black shadowline blue calibers with tacora red interior. Also got the sport rear diff
@@Mr.Lambert777, I think our X3s are identical…it’s easier for me to just mention the three things I didn’t get. The spare tire, those rear seat window shades and the heated rear seat. Congratulations to you also!!!!!!
The video cuts at the end always get me man 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
New cameras? the shots inside the car seem so much clearer
7:40 there also is a fully electric iX3 with a slightly longer wheelbase. Though I'm not sure if it's available im America
X3 M40i owner here. For stop and go function, I closed it by coding bimmercode
Can’t wait for my hug from James!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The ending is gold “where are we gonna cut the vid…”
Re: "You don't need the big v8" (in the X5)
If you want the upgraded suspension, 4-wheel steering, nice audio, and many other things. You have to get the V8.
Also, if you want to tow, the V8 is a major benefit. It makes towing easy, since the engine can just cruise along at highway speeds without needing to constantly change gear.
All that and I think the i6 model doesn't allow for disabling auto-start stop, though I may be wrong.
So while it is true that you don't "need" the V8 in the X5, the X5M50i is a major upgrade over the base X5.
Source: I've actually been in / driven both. Big difference, especially with the rear wheel steering and highway comfort.
Exactly! I’ll take the X5M50i any day !!
I've owned a 23' M40i X3 for about 3 months and agree with most of your comments. I really think the new mild hybrid system handles start/stop superbly and is extremely quick to come on, virtually seemless IMO; however, pro tip, if you are in sport mode than the start stop is disabled; you can setup a sport individual mode with more comfort like transmission tuning and get the desired results for a daily driver if disabling that feature is what you want.
Also agree the ride is not luxury cruiser smooth but I feel like many reviews of the vehicle overblow the ride harshness IMO, it rides like a sports car; which is maybe not what everyone wants. I think the key takeaway is maybe avoid the bigger wheels.
Overall love the car and the video.
I like that Red Porsche Taycan you got there in the reflections
Just bought mine today!
Wow have fun. I think I can only afford the 2020 or 2021 model 🤭
Where we gonna cut the vide-... 😂👍 Top notch comedy
This vid was so convincing, considered X3 M40i, just went to test drive. While there, saw the new 24 X5 50e, drove, Sold! B58, w/ EV boost, plus larger smoother ride. Need to do a X5 50e vid
Ah, but should one spec the M Sport Differential or not? I could see the extra differential actually being useful in non-shenanigan scenarios, such as maintaining control in winter conditions.
'22 X3 M40i owner here (also in the same primer-colored Brooklyn Grey) - the ride can be a bit harsh but it has never really bothered me. I wanted something firmer than all the cushy stuff I have owned before. I do notice a big different on winter tires - much softer so I do think the summer RFT's are not ideal for soft cushy driving. Absolutely love the car though and would recommend it to anyone. It's plenty quick and still gets awesome gas mileage - especially compared to the true M's that are atrocious for gas mileage.
How is the cornering...any body roll? Thanks, Joe
@@3joewj It's still an SUV so it has some amount of roll but definitely flatter than our VW Atlas.
this is the BEST of BOTH WORLDS! Driven the BASE MODEL X5 with this engine and it's IMPRESSIVE! I can only imagine with the BMW X3 M40i feels :) this is a GOLDEN BMW
Definitely like the pre-LCI better. From the head/tail lights, to the cerium gray accents, to the proper dual kidney grills instead of that cheap looking plastic one-piece. Not to mention all of the over-badging & M-mirrors.. I'll take my 2020 all day over this one.
I have the X5 40i X Drive. Love the B58!
I have not experienced the jerky stop/ start. I wonder if it is because of the mild hybrid setup I have?
I have the 2018 version (pre-LCI) which I actually prefer over the facelift. The M comp is way too stiff. The m40i is just right. Currently on Continental wintercontacts over the summer RFT's and makes a world of difference too. Need to shop for some good summer tires and she's near perfect. Such a great car.
I test drove the X3 M40i before buying the X3M. It felt very slow to me and not stiff at all. If, like Thomas and James, you want an SUV just to be an SUV, then I get it. I just don't agree that the M40i is the best X3 however.
How do you like your x3M ? I have the 23 x3M40i, its cool, not fast but I’ve shocked many scat pac and 5.0 out there that I’ve beating on the interstate. It’s no slouch at all, my next lease is going to be a M3 comp. I love that sedan.
@Mr.Lambert777 it's my wife's daily but it's an amazing SUV. It made me not want to daily a TT RS anymore. I picked up my M3 Comp xDrive last week, thinking it would drive similarly to the X3M and I was wrong, it's so much better. My only gripe about the X3M is fuel economy but it's still absolutely worth it.
@@fastlanelife3218 yea, thats my next car. I love the M3. I like comp sedans period. I love my x3M40i tho. I have no regrets. The b58 is definitely a sleeper of an eng. It’s not like a s58 which which is the ultimate eng, and when u buy cars like the x3M, x5M x6 fuel economy is the Least thing to worry about.. and btw Congrats to you and your wife for buying both M comp cars! God has definitely Graced you both with nice vehicles.
I want to sit high and ride sporty. This is perfect for me. We need more sporty suv’s.
Cant wait for the new ix3 that will be built on the new class platform and will probably have eAWD too!
How's the cabin noise? Jumping from my 2018 BMW 340 to my 2021 RDX....the RDX is super quiet and you hear so much road noise when in the BMW
I agree about the start/stop, it’s horrible. When driving in the city I put it in Sport mode so it doesn’t shut off. That’s in my 21’ m340i.
You should try the iX3. Unfortunately not available in NA…
With H&R spring the drive becomes even smoother! 😉
I have a 2022 and it’s the best we’ll rounded vehicle. You can drive it economically and get 26mpg, or you can punch it. It handles like a car. Multiple personalities, and can be very athletic.
I own a 2018 X3M40I and one of the 1st things I did was turn off the start stop function using bimmer code. It now has mst intake vtsf downpipe and mhd stwge 2 flash. For a 4400lb suv it is an absolute beast. Launches are insane and 0-60 in 3.8s

Love my X3 M40i which I've had for about two months now. It is so hard and tempting not to go into Sport Mode while in the break in period. Have another 450 miles to go! I did briefly change it to Sport Mode and it sounds and feels amazing.
