Legendary Maverick 88! All by word of mouth. It’s not the ‘poor man’s shotgun’ it’s the Smart Man’s shotgun. Never once any problem with this amazing Maverick 88.
A few points you got wrong. First the quality is basically the same as the 500. One difference is that some parts are imported, I believe, which keeps the cost down. Probably things like the elevator, the cartridge stop and interrupter, etc., though the 88 is still assembled in the US, Texas I believe. Another reason is that the forearm assembly doesn't use an actual action slide tube. Again, keeps the cost down. They also don't have to mill out the tang safety area on the receiver (or the top strap for screw holes for a rail), as it uses a cross bolt safety on the trigger assembly. Another difference from is the barrel, which is a standard barrel, unlike other 500s that have heavy walled barrels. Also, the 500 normally come with a few more bells and whistles. The other point is, most shotgun barrels are considered smooth bore, unless they are rifled. It's easier to say it has and open choke or cylinder bore, which normally denotes it isn't threaded for any chokes. Also, though your 20 in. model gives you 2 more rounds, you'll be severely limited using most of the 500 barrels. As for the front sight, you can actually get replacement bead sights, but remember, if it's a higher front sight, you'll be shooting lower with the same sight picture. Lastly, if you include the magazine on a 1911 there are, I believe, 58 parts. The 88 only has 52.
Both Security models the 18.5 inch and the 20 inch are just as good as the top model shot guns. Just slide a Hi- viz red or green optic up front to help pick up the bead.
Apologies just saw this comment. I did some more digging and yes you are correct. Nonetheless the Maverick is still a customizable shotgun indeed. Appreciate you pointing out my fault. Have a good day!
@@Zubes240 just was shooting my Maverick 88 today with the Opsol Mini Clip and 1 3/4" Augilla slugs. No hiccups. Good times. Took a friend who'd never fired a shotgun before so the mini shells were perfect to introduce him to 12 gauges. Next week I'll have him try some 2.75" slugs and buckshot.
The 88 might be the baby of the bunch but it can still outlive you if you take care of it. If you REALLY like mossberg you should save up for the 590A1 Retro. Not the 590 retro (still a good gun but uses polymer for the trigger group). Or you could get you a 940 tactical. You may encounter people who will say you could spend money elsewhere but Mossberg makes solid shotguns. This is coming from someone who owns shotguns from Mossberg, Browning, Beretta, Black Aces, Benelli....anything with the letter B I suppose.
Nothing wrong with the polymer trigger group. If that's the argument then you should buy a Remington over Mossberg because of the steel receiver vs the alloy.
All you need is a bead, you point a shotgun, not aim one. I have the 590A1 and replaced the furniture with Hogue rubber overmolded furniture, the Hogue somewhat removed the rickety rack noise found in a pump gun, it completely changed the overall feel, super smooth now. Outside my Ithaca model 37, its the best guage for the money.
True the bead sight is more of a suggestion. But whenever you aim it should not point slightly towards the sky when you aim. That’s all I was saying. But I appreciate the comment. I am looking at a 590 right now actually
Great video, watch tfb try to burn down the 88 with 500 plus rounds, not a single malfunction. Would I rather have a 500 or 590? Yes, but don’t let the budget price fool you. $229 @ cal ranch. It’s beats any turkenstien pump. It’s made in maverick Texas and customer services is the shiznick. Excellent.
I am trying to decide between the Maverick 88 ($253) or the 590A1 MAGPUL ($950). Lol. I’m having a tough time deciding, the price won’t break my bank, but it will definitely put a decent dent in it, lol.
I bought both the 18.5” & 20” for under $400 and change. (Pre Covid) I have a Moss 590, 930 and a Rem 870. The Maverick’s come with me to the range every time. Love my Shotties!
The Maverick definitely is on the cheaper side of the scale. But it is extremely reliable that came from a very reliable shotgun manufacturer. The decision is yours to make. Although I will say that both shotguns are reliable and easy to use.
Just got that model last week. Had to order it and waited 2 months. $254 out the door once it came in. Can't beat this shotty for price, capacity and size.
@@Zubes240 in theory, if I drill and tap both sides of the pin, and put little screw in, it should work. It's the one for trigger parts, the one with dimples in it. I wanna like the gun, but not there yet.
Yeah, it's kinda interesting how gun manufacturers make most firearms for right-handed shooters. It’s mostly because the truth is there are more right-handed people than left-handed. But that’s the price you pay when you are wrong-handed… jk jk! Whatever you need to do to shoot go for it, man! Take it easy!

The Mav 88 security version that holds 7 shells doesn't take the 500 barrels. The 5 shell, 18.5" security version will take most Mossberg 500 barrels.
