    Couple tips and tricks for these shotguns:
    1. The Maverick 88 is literally nothing more than a Mossberg 500 with a crossbolt safety instead of a tang safety. Subsequently, all Mossberg 500 aftermarket parts will work with this gun, including barrels. Do note that the foreend is pinned to the bars instead of a seperate part on a slide tube like the 500, so ordering a seperate Mossberg 500 slide tube assembly is needed in order to use aftermarket foreends.
    2. It's possible to unload this shotgun without cycling the action over and over again; simply pressing the left side shell latch will release the shells and allow you to remove them, and once that's done, you press the action bar and pull the action back to extract the remaining chambered round.
    3. The magazine tube can be replaced very easily, as it's only threaded in place with thread locker (This is also how you can get extended tubes; the 20 inch barrel + 8 round tube assembly can be purchased seperately and replace the standard 5 round magazine/barrel assembly).

    We designed the OPSol Flex Adapter on a Mav 88. That particular gun was probably dry racked over 20,000 times during the development. Still working today. Most of the internals "bits" that you showed are interchangeable with any other 500 based Mossberg, including the Shockwave. With our adapter in place, you can load 8 or 9 minishells in the tube of that particular 88 model. Sam,e for barrel/tube combos.

    Recently bought the combo maverick 88 package, love the shotgun. Will admit the first 3 or 4 shells out of the box the pump was still and not smooth. But by the end of the first tube, it seemed to polish its self up. Love the fact that alot of the extra bits out there that fit the fancier 500 series will also fit the 88.

    Something I do and will always like about the shotgun. Besides the fact it’s a USA made shotgun among these millions of Turkish made guns that are swarming the markets (no not all Turkish firearms are bad, I’m just patriotic), the shotgun pump rides with dual sliding bars. I’ve had shotguns with single sliding bars and the pump itself always felt wobbly and felt like if the shotgun fell to the ground or if i wrongly smacked the shotgun against something that the pump would fall off. I realize if you planned on changing the pump portion of the gun it would require basically a new assembly, but the dual sliding bars makes it awesome and even more durable than single rides. I didn’t buy this shotgun to turn around and spend another $100 trying to customize it. The point of this gun being cheap is well it being cheap. This is my home defense and bug out gun along with my AR and handgun. I’ve got the shotgun sitting across the room in front of my plate carrier and delta helmet ready to go. I bought it with shells for a total of $280 brand new, and I mean you can’t go wrong with Mossberg. It’s a very very good company, “they’ll make turds better than shit”. Like if they manufactured guns only worth $100, they’d still make it where it’d work to its full potential. I’ve never had an issue with Mossberg and I’m always going to be a fan of their Shockwave, 88, and 500’s.

    • @Hjerte_Verke
      @Hjerte_Verke 6 місяців тому

      The dual action bars are something Mossberg "stole" from Remington in the 1970s after the patents expired. You say "cheap" but I say "underpriced" to take back profits they were losing from other cheap shotguns in the marketplace. A lot of these competitively priced shotguns are in fact Turkish made with Winchester and Savage Stevens logos on them, to name a few.

    I got the combo set with both barrels for $350 at Canadian Tire last year. No issues, quite happy with it.
    I made a couple small additions.
    1) I bought a small rear sling mount plate that fits between the stock and receiver
    2) I bought a front sling mount that screws onto itself between the barrel and mag tube
    3) I bought the Houge overmoulded 12" lop stock - which is a fantastic addition to any shotgun if you are a stocky fellow like myself or looking for something a bit more tactical without looking like it
    Honestly you could use this as your only shotgun and you realistically would never need to replace it. That said, if I was doing it again I would probably spend the extra for a 500 so I could get the higher mag capacity. However, grabbing that two barrel set is hard to pass up. $350 and I got a duck gun and a "tactical" short shotgun in one package.

    If you say the Maverick 88 is crude then you have to say so is the 500 Mossberg.
    The only difference is safety location, different trigger groups and the pump handle attaches differently.
    You did an excellent tear down review.

      I bought a Mossberg 500 youth 20 gauge 1n 1990, the first thing I did was file all the rough edges and polish and buff parts,......but I did that to help the break in.
      I bought another in .410 did the same thing to it,.....its amazing you put the bead on paper and you get a perfect pattern,....but that said I don't like .410,.. not enough shot.
      I like 20 gauge,.... The 510 sounds nice,.....FEATURES: EZ-Reach Forends, Reduced Length of Pull, Shorter Barrels and Adjustable Stocks designed to grow with the user. Dual extractors, positive steel-to-steel lockup, twin action bars, and an anti-jam elevator ensure smooth operation. Top mounted safety provides for ambidextrous operation.
      Children take interest in guns but often times youth guns are too long or too heavy,......I'd get my kid a rossi single shot until 13 or 14 when their starting to get some size.
      If your not happy with the 510 Mossberg tell them,... I will never buy another Winchester,... unless it was made prior to 1980.
      I know I'm done with winchester I bought 3 pieces of junk.
      And I can not recommend any other brands.
      I personally only reconize, Ruger, Taurus, Rossi and mossberg.
      I'm open to cheap gun's,.... because of the lack of quality in expensive gun's.
      Most of the shotguns that I see are rebranded Turkish made shotguns.
      I have a Charles Daly its Tutkish it so big it makes me feel like a child,.. it shoots great,....I just shoot paper.
      I use an old sears bolt action for squirrel hunting in 20ga at fifty yards squirrels just drop.
      good luck,... getting service or looking for another gun.

      At least it is shooting a consistent group, that counts for something. Try DIFFERENT slug shells. different weight slugs, different shell brands. You really have to find the ammo that your particular gun likes--to reinforce my point I'd recommend the Paul Harrell channel. He does painstaking comparisons between ammo and different guns and his shotgun series is just phenomenal. Totally no B.S. like other clickbait channels.

    0:47 What you will receive in terms of sling swivel studs or no studs at all really seems to be luck-of-the-draw. The photos on the Mossberg site (today 1/18/2024) show mostly molded-on swivel studs (part of the plastic stock) like what you have but many Mavericks come with proper steel swivel studs front & rear and sometimes nothing except a flat spot for the stud and an empty threaded hole on the magazine cap/takedown screw. I learned that the Mavericks with the molded-on "studs" have a cheaper mostly hollow butt-stock and they cannot be drilled in the normal way for a proper swivel stud because there's not enough material there. I think you can work around that by using a nut to secure the stud from the inside. The flat spot stocks or those with factory installed studs feel like solid wood when you tap them with your knuckles. Behind the butt pad, they are only hollow in a narrow channel for the long screwdriver you use for disassembly.

    I have a Maverick 88, it's a good gun. Only suggestion, don't fire more than 3-4 boxes (75-100 shells) through it fast, otherwise the action will start to seize and you will have to mortar it.

    • @Hjerte_Verke
      @Hjerte_Verke 6 місяців тому

      Well that's a terrible statement. Maybe there is something wrong with yours? OTOH I am not sure WHY I would want to fire off 75-100 shells fast--it really cannot be done because you take a decent pause when reloading; it's not like slapping in a fresh magazine.

    Since the overall purpose of any firearm is that it consistently fires a projectile down range and hits its target, and since Mossberg does this as good as any $2000.00 gun, I would suggest you can stop your whining over how 'cheap' this gun is by sending Mossberg an extra $500.00 and then it will automatically be a 'quality' gun, I've had one of these 88's for years and I would put it up against any of your 'quality' guns anytime !!
