When my grandmother and I got home from her picking me up from kindergarten, CLICK! On with the TV (in the 1950s, the set had to warm up for a little while), and I would see this opening. It scared the hell outta me, but by then Grandma was already deeply into who was gonna do what to whom!
Yours? Mine kept me when I was a small child like 4 or 5, I remember the second intro with the flowers in the background on her black & white set. I am two weeks shy of my 57th b-day & fondly remember her watching her "stories" not soap operas. She watched the CBS lineup beginning with Love of Life.
With women in the workplace and not having time to watch a recording, viewership has gone down. It is a dying art and trashy talk shows have taken over. It is bittersweet.
Love of Life theme and opening truly beautiful and a dignified loveliness for a daytime drama during its last decade the 1970s . Memorable and Beautiful . Much thanks for these !! ❤😊
I hope y’all will reply to this Peggy McCay who played Vanessa later would play Caroline Brady on NBC’s soap opera Days of our Lives…..she also played Lawrencia “Laurie” Bembenek’s mother Virginia in the NBC miniseries Woman on the Run:The Lawrencia Bembenek Story
I thought it was great to see the late Sammy Davis Jr. was a fan of the show. He was also a special guest star on the soap. Plus Christopher Reeve aka Superman got his start on this soap opera.
I remember this was on when I came home for lunch in the 70s. I think it started at 11:30 AM on CBS. Was it an hour long? Wondering how I could remember seeing it at lunchtime
For sometime the show aired at 1130AM EST - a tad early for lunch - and any soap airing before noon did not tend to fare well - when LOL was moved to that spot in the late 60's and began a downward spiral. What didn't help matters was that 2 of 3 of Roy Winsor's shows (LOL and Secret Storm) that were sponsored/owned by American Home Products (AHP) but licensed to CBS sold the programs to CBS to now be in house soaps, making them more vulnerable to the network's whims. In 1973-1974 CBS cancelled all of its in house soaps except for LOL. The reason LOL escaped the ax was the writers wisely reinstated Meg and her son Ben to the storyline after an over a decade absence, creating great plots as the one with Ben's bigamy and getting Sammy Davis Jr. to guest star on a 1974 episode. Our then CBS affiliate (WCAU - as of middle September 1995 NBC10) during its history as long as I can remember aired it at noon EST. In early 1979 under the pretext of "saving" the show CBS moved the official broadcast time to 4PM EST - a time which long time director Larry Auerbach said after the final show was broadcast was better suited to programming catering to children coming home from school. WCAU aired LOL at noon to the very end, however, as did CBS's own flagship station in NYC (WCBS) as did many others, who at least didn't stop airing the program altogether but it was now being aired on a one day tape delay from the rest of the nation. On the other hand Roy's other program (Search for Tomorrow, which debuted exactly 3 weeks before LOL) was owned by P&G which tended to be more loyal to its shows. In the early 80's when CBS wanted to cancel Search, they got NBC to pick it up for its final few years. Similarly when CBS wanted to cancel P&G owned Edge of Night (in order to expand ATWT and GL) in 1975, P&G worked out a deal to move EON to ABC. As I recall, CBS only gave one month's cancelation notice to the LOL cast & crew in January 1980 - right after the holidays, leading everyone to frantically update resumes, contact agents, etc. - some of which had been on the show for 20 some years. i think Winsor, et al, did try in vain to get another network to pick up LOL but couldn't do anything with lack of notice.
Also, the program started in 1951 as a 15 minute program, expanded in the late 50's to a half hour. For most of the time since the fall of 1962, the program was cut back to 25 minutes to accommodate a CBS newscast so that's why you'd hear "stay turned for (whatever) following the news over MOST of these CBS stations". They resumed the full half hour when the show was moved to 4PM EST in 1979 - too little too late - so it was never on for a full hour. The program in part was cancelled in order to make room to expand The Young and the Restless to an hour.
I remember LOL's opening from the 60s. It might have had something to do with the fact that at that time, the USA was involved in the so-called "Space race" with the Soviet Union.
Loved the music from 1967 to the final one. My favorite credits were the final ones with main characters grouped together in relationships - LOL beat ATWT in doing this for years. I liked LOL's opening scene with the water fountain in front of the Plaza Hotel but liked the organ music used on the early days of ATWT better.
Ah, so true! it's a shame that Roy Winsor couldn't get LOL syndicated after CBS gave practically zero cancelation notice to the cast and crew. After all, MH, MH did quite well for a few years being syndicated.
This show I read somewhere had a reputation for being very well written and just plain classy. I hate that word and that's not the word i am sure that was used to describe it but I can't remember now. Anyway these clips make me believe what I read was true!
I never watched Love of Life; I started watching soaps, Days of Our Lives, in 1986. Then I transitioned to General Hospital which I watched until 1998, my last year in college. I never watched them again. (I like the last opening of Love of Life!)
Thanks. I was hoping to see the one with the stars or starry night. I wonder how many episodes of this soap survive. The 1977 opening is my favorite. The theme, the beauty shots, classic. I would like to know how it was created. Thanks.
I hope this helps: Charles Paul stayed with his arrangement of the show's original theme until 1967. Here's the Love of Life theme that was used 1967-73. ua-cam.com/video/fSIbXNHaRAQ/v-deo.html
Beware the Eye yes she also played Lawrencia “Laurie” Bembenek’s mother Virginia in the NBC miniseries Woman on the Run: The Lawrencia Bembenek Story I hope you will reply to this
I remember the opening with the flowers 💐 it was on right after the price is right and before search for tomorrow in the 70s
Never saw Love of Life. That last theme is quite dignified and lovely. As late '70s themes tended to be.
I love the old organ music.

My mom use too watch this when I was little, Cant believe there's only 4 daytime soaps left as of today must be a dying breed!

@@triciajohansen9295You're right. And unfortunately trashy talk shows are cheaper to produce.
@@lightninseed now days that's exactly what the soap opera has become
@@triciajohansen9295 not all talk shows are trashy Jennifer Hudson has one and it’s nice like Kelly Clarkson’s talk show

Memories RIP Christopher Reeves he got his start on that show

My mother used to watch this and the other soaps that was on channel 2 at that time

"LOL" had a phenomenal 21-season run on CBS!
Actually LOL was on for a little over 28 years (9/22/1951 to 2/1/1980)

1967-1977 the best
Love this!!!!!!

I’ve always thought Mary Hartman used their opening window scene based on Love of Life
Ah, so true! it's a shame that Roy Winsor couldn't get LOL syndicated after CBS gave practically zero cancelation notice to the cast and crew. After all, MH, MH did quite well for a few years being syndicated.
Exactly, Mary Hartman definitely was a parody of soap operas, a late night version.
This.show.was so.classy Peggy McKay.was fabulous and so was Audrey Peters
Misti you know Peggy McCay later played Caroline Brady on the NBC soap opera Days of our Lives huh????
Hey I just seen the episode of Love Of Life from August 22, 1960!! I saw the opening of it!! Please you need to update!!
They have posted on UA-cam before. I guess they have since been taken down.
Beautifully done

Misti from what i read, it was never quality! Just had terrible time slots.
I think my mom used to watch Love Of Life.
Wasn't there an opening where they showed stars like in space or at night? I seem to remember that as a boy in the 60s.
Yes, they did. I have an episode with that opening. It features a dark, starry background, and the title was formed into those stars. Good memory. 👍
I never watched Love of Life; I started watching soaps, Days of Our Lives, in 1986. Then I transitioned to General Hospital which I watched until 1998, my last year in college. I never watched them again. (I like the last opening of Love of Life!)
The last opening theme was like the Young & The Restless
Thanks. I was hoping to see the one with the stars or starry night. I wonder how many episodes of this soap survive. The 1977 opening is my favorite. The theme, the beauty shots, classic. I would like to know how it was created. Thanks.

51 to 57 is so hip...so now!!!
The 1977-1980 opening: everyone is depressed
Possibly they suspected their show was on borrowed time.
Peggy McCray, thats Caroline on DOOL 😊
RIP😭
Beware the Eye yes she also played Lawrencia “Laurie” Bembenek’s mother Virginia in the NBC miniseries Woman on the Run: The Lawrencia Bembenek Story I hope you will reply to this
