Awesome! Do you have any kinescopes of your episodes? As you know CBS wiped out episodes prior to September 1972 P&G continued wiping until 1978 - the same year ABC stopped - and EON moved to ABC from CBS on 12.1.1975. Thanks!
My favorite years for the opening were '77-'80. Around that time the only opening title more eerie than Edge's was In Search Of. And after that, Tales From the Darkside used that same color to negative transition with the freaky music and it was amazing. Totally agree with you!
Thank God. I thought I was the one scared out of my mind but this intro theme. I loved it tho. It was familiar and eerie. It definitely set the oftentimes creepy and mysterious tone of the soap just as much as the “Dark Shadows” theme song did to help convey its distinctly gothic noir vibe.
It's totally crazy to see these comments that mirrors my feelings of how eerie, and spooky the opening credits of TEON was. My Grandmother loved her "Stories" as she would call it. But TEON was certainly one of her favorites. She would make breakfast and a sweet cup of coffee as we would watch her Stories. Rest in Heaven Hattie Pearl Johnson Booker 🙏🏾
One of the prettiest theme musics ever added to a soap. As much as the 80s stuff was the "malaise era" as has been said about the cars of the decade, this one definitely had a sort if hypnotic charm that belies some of the emptiness of feeling I get from much of today's content, although still sometimes good every so often. The original theme music, and content, was evolution of script and music over time, having a certain sort of respect for its origins, or traditional trademarks. This viewpoint isn't just for soaps, but media in general.
That was Geraldine Whitney (and later Saxon), played by the late, great Lois Kibbie. She was AWESOME, and definitely DIDN'T take any sh*t from anyone. A very similar character to Kay Chancellor on Y&R in many ways.
LONG LIVE The Edge of Night! My favorite daytime drama! I still watch reruns of it on my phone! Raven, Nicole & Geraldine were my favorites! In general, the whole cast was stupendous
Nobody could say EON didn’t try to keep up with the times… although I’ll agree those final opening credits were really a bit 80s… personally I love the terrifying 1980-1983 rendition, with intense music, somber characters, and an overwhelming sense of doom and dread. Even as a child, I was convinced that Monticello was the most dangerous city in America, since every character on this series seemed to be struggling just to stay alive. You definitely didn’t want to get too attached to anyone on this show, except maybe Raven Whitney, as they’d be killed off in the most terrifying ways imaginable. I’m really surprised EON isn’t still with us today, and that nobody’s attempted a revival, because it established the whole “law & order” tone that rules TV today. Hokey soap storylines layered on, just for kicks.
OMG! That 1977-1980 version. There were only two opening sequences that ran more chills down my spine and they were Tales From the Darkside and In Search Of. I used to cling like static to my grandmom's arm when this started up and beg her to turn it off, only to be right there the next day doing it again! Great memories!
I didn't like it when they discarded the melancholy noir-jazz 1977 theme for the 1980 dance-club theme, but I'm pretty sure I would have just loathed that wretched samba theme they used at the very end had I still been watching.
Yeah, it was! But all the openings were great! I hated when they killed off Nicole - she was one of my favorites, but I kept watching until the last episode. That show should have gone on longer than when it got cancelled.
The original opening to EON was the skyline of Cincinnati, where P&G was located...when they made the transition to the new opening in 1980, according to history, switched it to the skyline of Los Angeles...
I think it was the only Proctor & Gamble Soap that was broadcasted on ABC back in the day. This would have been perfect as an Opening Sequence on The UK Soap Opera EastEnders that recently celebrated it's 35th Anniversary. Two other Soaps also celebrated their Anniversaries. Coronation Street (60 Years) which now surpasses Guiding Light as the Longest Running Televised Soap Opera on TV, as well as Hollyoaks which celebrates 25 Years. In Australia Neighbors also celebrates 35 Years which was created by Reg Watson who created the "Original" Prisoner Cell Block H that was remade as "Wentworth."
Paul Taubman, who was musical director for several shows, wrote the theme music for the show, and also played the organ/piano (often in combo) on the show for many years.
The first two openings were the best. I was little when the second one used to come on. The title "The edge of night" is one of the best titles that I've ever heard of. That coupled with the mysterious music and the omnimous setting of The City really gripped my imagination as a child. I still remember it after all these years.
1976's opening looks and sounds like a horror movie. I like it :D My favorite logo would be the one from 1983-84, although it doesn't mix well with those 80s laser/image effects. Very nice compilation!
I never cared for Larkin Malloy in either AMC or GL his characters were just not as well written and did not seem to fit him like the character of Sky Whitney. It was almost as if the part was created especially just for him. Also, he did not gel as well with Kim Zimmer or Susan Lucci. He and Sharon Gabet had absolutely remarkable chemistry, anyone else agree?
west19sd I agree! I'd have to put Sky and Raven along with Luke and Laura from GH, and Cliff and Nina from AMC as the "Big Three" of Supercouples of Daytime television!👍
What a terrible last theme for a show. It's so dated, it's tinny, it's shallow. I wish they had kept to the 82-83 one, even if I don't like that weird blue fadeout. I like that that one had Raven as the last, and most vital, character. Larkin Malloy was so gorgeous...
I didn't get to see this whole series but I watched towards the end, and it's better than 99 percent of the crap on TV during the day today. If i had a ton of money, I'd do a different soap opera channel, this would be one of the soaps I'd have on it
Cried my eyes out when EDGE went off the air. I was in England but taped it in Betamax. It was taped over but thanks goodness USA network reran the last few months. I met Larkin Malloy at a NJ mall. How exciting! He politely would not divulge who he liked working with best: Kim Zimmer, Susan Lucci, or Sharon Gabet.
On the Irish Soap Opera Fair City, there's a Character named Larkin. So Many Folks from the UK are either on Soaps or Pop Stars. Some of them would have been fantastic on US Soaps as an European Relative.
I loved "The Edge of Night" since the mid 1970's & followed it to ABC, when it got cancelled in 1984. They used to play reruns of it on the USA network at 1:00am after it got so mercifully cancelled. LONG LIVE EON!!

The best storyline to me was "Who Killed Stephanie Martin", a great who done-it, with a surprise murderess, Pamela Martin, none other than Irene Dailey. Oh how I wish some of these episodes existed, but being late 69, early 70, not likely.
This show was so unique, it was inspired by the Perry Mason show, and they focused mainly on different mysteries going on in and around Monticello - Monticello was supposedly a suburb of Chicago, even though in the earlier opening credits, they show the city of Cleveland-
What kind of made me proud is when Ebony Magazine did a profile of Blacks On The Soaps and they mentioned The Edge Of Night, All My Children & Another World.

@publicitypunk there were definitely some fun mishaps when soaps were still broadcast live. My all-time favourite near-miss involved ATWT, when Lisa was supposed to be pregnant, and the organist screwed up and played the "fade-to-commercial" music by mistake, and Eileen Fulton, assuming they were off the air, almost pulled the pillow out from under her blouse, right on-camera.
@RadioFreeSpike Close resemblance, but the actor is Joel Crothers, who starred in several New York based soaps, including "Dark Shadows". He passed away from complications due to AIDS about a year or so after "Edge" was cancelled.
If they revived this show with attention to good acting this show could be a powerhouse. Imagine if they hired writers who really know how to craft good stories with interesting characters like EDGE in its heyday. General Hospital has done quite well with its mob stories. Air the new version with the C&B theme and you could wipe away much of the lame competition.
I remember the characters of Sky and Raven being like a Nick and Nora Charles/Hart to Hart supercouple getting involved and solving crimes/mysteries. Current daytime soap writers need to take page or two from the way storylines/characters used to be written. Action. adventure, romance, love themes, out on location, laughter, heartache/break without dragging it out at a slow burn with no real/exciting pay off by the conclusion.
I remember the one at :28. Beautiful and very unique theme. Miss those days when all the shows had their own unique look and sound -- not that disco looking s__t today.

@CarlD2 Haha, I actually like the '84, though it definitely shows its age! Reminds me of some educational health show we watched in elementary school! Wish I could watch episodes of this show.
Yeah but keep in mind, Blacks On Soaps were still a rare thing. It wasn't until the 1980 that they finally came into their own. Then some Soaps acted like Black People didn't exist. Look at The Bold & The Beautful, for a long time they had no people of Color on that Show.
I can't help it though. Every time I see her, I think back to her shower scene in Caddyshack when she says, "Elihu? Would you come and loofah my stretchmarks?"
@@mikemercado5223 Yes, thanks for reminding me. Was it true he was also an Acting Coach? Is ti true that when it debuted it had more of a Mickey Spillane Vibe to it? Alot of talent came from this show.
Again, very good work. The second (Elliot Lawrence) theme was also used with the original color opening visuals for roughly the first year after Edge moved to ABC.
Yes, I recall in Connecticut it was on ABC, but only on the New York affiliate, Channel 7 at 4:00 right after General Hospital. I don't know what they had on Channel 8. PM Magazine or something
The last two years screamed a junior "Miami Vice." It was the 1980s, and some soaps were trying to cash in on MV's popularity by updating the intros with techno music and geometric openings.
I was born in '76, never really watched a full episode, but I have fuzzy memories of previews and closing credits. I've read that this was a very innovative show and it sounds more quality that the crap they put on today. Soaps from the 90s on have taken a turn for the worse. They need more of this and Dark Shadows. I started a facebook group: Daytime Tv soap opera memorial, if anyone wants to come discuss these shows and relive memories. So far, no one has joined. Couldn't even get my wife to.
I played juvenile delinquent "Julie Kurtz" on this show in 1962-63... Had a real crush on my co-star Fran Sharon, who played "Cookie Pollack"...
So Awesome! I was a young child watching with my Grandmother, in the mid-60’s. As young as I was; I remember Cookie… long, blonde, straight hair…
Strange.

Well, the opening was certainly better when it featured the Cincinnati skyline!
I LOVED the unique names of the characters - Draper Scott, Wynter Austin, Raven - this show was one of the best soaps around!
Yes, those names were definitely a trademark on that show. Don't forget Sky, Poppy, Star, Preacher, Jinx
And don’t forget Geraldine Saxon! Now THERE’S a name!

All i can remember about this program is that if i come home from school my mother would have " The Edge Of Night " on our old RCA Victor black and white TV :) I think we got 2 to 3 channels back in the day :) But that did not matter i could always find something good on to watch :) Now i have satillite dish and i get about 200 channels :) I cannot find anything on to watch but the news ? So i come here on YT and watch all day :) RIP Mom i know you loved your soap opera,s :) I hope your watching them up in haven with dad and grandma may you all RIP
Thank you so much for posting this! Brings back GREAT memories!
@CarlD2 Haha, I actually like the '84, though it definitely shows its age! Reminds me of some educational health show we watched in elementary school! Wish I could watch episodes of this show.
Today marks 36 years that the show aired it;s final broadcast ,yes I actually watched it
Thanks for including the original opening that ran from 1956 to 1967!
LMAO this show should've been called The Edge of White.
LMFAO!!!
Yeah but keep in mind, Blacks On Soaps were still a rare thing. It wasn't until the 1980 that they finally came into their own. Then some Soaps acted like Black People didn't exist. Look at The Bold & The Beautful, for a long time they had no people of Color on that Show.
Harry Kramer was the best announcer
Don't forget Bill Wolff who did the announcing for another Proctor & Gamble Soap Another World.
it's fun to imitate his "Edge"
I can't help it though. Every time I see her, I think back to her shower scene in Caddyshack when she says, "Elihu? Would you come and loofah my stretchmarks?"
A cutting edge introduction.
RIP Larkin Malloy (Ex-Schyler) (Ex-Travis Montgomery All My Children), (Ex-Kyle Sampson Guiding Light).
Ex Clay Alden on Living
Loving
@@mikemercado5223 Yes, thanks for reminding me. Was it true he was also an Acting Coach? Is ti true that when it debuted it had more of a Mickey Spillane Vibe to it? Alot of talent came from this show.
My mom use to watch this one and the Guiding light , As the world Turns and The Secret Storm.
Again, very good work. The second (Elliot Lawrence) theme was also used with the original color opening visuals for roughly the first year after Edge moved to ABC.
you do such excptional work!
show jury scenes late 60's
I would have loved to have seen this when it was on ABC...since I used to be an ABC Soap fan
Yes, I recall in Connecticut it was on ABC, but only on the New York affiliate, Channel 7 at 4:00 right after General Hospital. I don't know what they had on Channel 8. PM Magazine or something
I love all of the themes, but especially the show in general!!
@CarlD2 nope it was cincinati
My favorite
Love Edge❤
1:37 it's Aunt Becky.
The last two years screamed a junior "Miami Vice." It was the 1980s, and some soaps were trying to cash in on MV's popularity by updating the intros with techno music and geometric openings.
I'm thinking it has similarities to Mad Men's theme.
Ahhh the love of my 20's Joel Crothers rest in piece my buddy
