A great down to earth guide. I hope that this is the video that newcomers choose when they look on UA-cam! Drinking whisky should be easy and fun, and you guys are really on point

Great you put such an emphasis on extensive smelling. That's one thing newbies tend to neglect a lot, but it's a big part of the experience.

I'm no scotch drinker, but I've got a bottle of 15 year single malt balvenie that I've been sitting on and looking to pop open one of these days. Thanks for the great tips and an excellent video for giving me some confidence to try it out! Cheers!

Great guide! The “say what you taste” is actually incredibly useful and makes scotch taste even better because you aren’t trying to resist that “bubble gum” flavor!

Great episode, love the new music but it was a little loud over your dialogue. Good tips for beginners, you don't learn this stuff overnight. Different size sips really change what I taste as well as the various number of drops of water. Love the journey.

When it comes to scotch, there is so much to choose from, that it comes down to what flavors you might like, and the cost. For myself, I actually like blends more than single malts. To keep things affordable, and yet not to give up a decent blend, flavor wise, two that I like alot are Famous Grouse Smokey Black, and Teacher's Highland Cream. I also like the Dewars blends. I drink my scotches mostly neat, with a few drops of water as needed. But I agree with you, that whatever you like should be your first consideration. With so many choices to choose from, it'll never get too boring...

Great Summary Mark! I thought I would share a weird whisky sipping technique. I'm often hesitant to add water(and strawberry crush) to my whisky....bad experiences killing the taste. To avoid this, sometimes I like to take a sip of water first keeping a tiny amount in my mouth and then sip the whisky and let it dilute in the mouth. Downside is you can't nose it diluted. However, I like being able to go backwards, ie. start diluted then work up to sipping neat. Slainte!

Huh, can't argue with your technique....will have to try it! Many thanks for sharing! ~Mark

A classic Scotch description line: "Smells/tastes like [nail polish/tar/benzene/cough medicine/dirty chimney/...(something usually unpleasant, you name it)] BUT in a good way!" ;-)

Great video Mark! To the 1 sec rule... true...with a 21 year... I would coat my mouth for a good 8-10 secs...
If you just drink it, your not going to enjoy ANY Whiskey. It'll taste like straight alcohol. Like The Dalmore 15 or Glenfiddich 15... I found a more enjoyable experience with those scotches more after I "swish" it in my mouth for about 10-12 secs...pineapple come out alot with the Glenfiddich 15 ...& The Dalmore 15 I got HEAVY dark Chocolate!
So my advice for newbies...toy around with different Scotches! You can get away with this technique with lower ABV's too...that plays a huge factor as well. I'm not doing this technique with an 46 or a 50 ABV is my point 😄😄😄

Some great tips Mark....one I would add is, using the correct shape of glass always helps nosing.

    • @Scotch4Dummies
      @Scotch4Dummies  6 років тому

Excellent tip and actually gets me thinking of another, be sure to shy away from using dish soap on your whisky glasses, hand rinse them with hot water and call it good! There is nothing more frustrating than going in for that initial nose and getting a whif of a glass that wasn't fully rinsed of hard soap! ~Mark

I appreciate the fact you mentioned the smells. I find myself smelling my scotch and other drinks longer than I care to admit. It's not about getting drunk it's about understanding the ingredients and the life it creates for our taste buds.

Clan MacGregor is my poison, but looking at other brands, 12-15 yr. I drink mine neat or with a soda that does not take away flavor, Mt Dew.

Just got another bottle of 12 year old this morning (11.30 am).
In Scotland Edinburgh is cost me £40.89. There is a bigger tax on all alcohol in Scotland, this is an attempt to reduce the amount of alcoholic's in Scotland. I don't understand why this applies to whiskeys in this price bracket as most if not all alcoholic's can't afford whiskeys in this price bracket, one can get two bottles of Bells or Grouse for around £40.

It's a philistine that waters down a good aged single malt whiskey with whatever.
The best way to get the best out of a good Scottish single malt is to, first remove the cork, then proceed to pore a stiff one. Bring it up to body temperature by massaging the glass in your hands till the liquor is at body temperature (continuing to inhale the fumes as the liquid reaches body heat)...
Don't gulp the hole amount in one go. Suck it in between your teeth so your tongue is covered with a fine spray. Don't take another sip until the full flavour of the first mouthful has evaporated the alcohol and what's left in your mouth will be the full flavour. This is only my opinion!
Advice from a person well steeped in whiskeys'
    John from Edinburgh Scotland UK.

Is this why some people use a decanter?? Because I've notice decanters are not sealed shut... so a little air can flow in them...or am I'm completely off with that theory? 😄
