First of all, I prefer my bourbon with a cube. But as a bourbon connoisseur we are not snobby and we don’t care how you drink it, just drink it. If you are drinking your favorite bourbon with coke, then it will be the best bourbon and coke you’ve ever had. If you like it with water, then it’s the best bourbon and water you’ve ever had. Bourbon is America’s native spirit so you’re doing your patriotic duty by drinking it!

jim piser There’s no such thing as being patriotic by drinking fucking bourbon. You aren’t cool because you do or don’t drink. You aren’t cool if you do or don’t mix an expensive spirit with coke. Fucking pisses me off you think you’re doing America a favor by destroying your liver. Lmao. Ok.

I didn't take it literal at all. Also, drinking a little Whiskey now and then is no worse for you than anything else imo. I dont really drink but I enjoy one every so often. You don't have to be a drunk to drink alcohol, nor will a little destroy your liver . Live and let live. Not worth getting worked up about it .

dominionn09 Actually any amount of alcohol, whether a drop or a whole bottle, is a carcinogen (cancer causing) just so you know.

I toured A. Smith Bowman in Fredericksburg, Va. The production supervisor gave us a personal tour and tasting lesson. The proper way to drink an aged whiskey is to allow it to sit in the glass one minute for every year it was in the barrel. He demonstrated this to us and there really is a difference.

I take mine with two ice cubes. At first I get the pure experience, then slowly the water dash where some flavores begin to show. Then a little more water where other nuances come out. Every Bourbon has a unique series of transitions , and toward the end they're all refreshing and cold.

The reason the ice ball works better is because it has LESS surface area than broken up ice. Therefore less ice touches the bourbon and it doesn't water it down as fast.

Beginner Bourbon drinker - I've been interested in bourbon starting about 5 years ago when I entered a liquor store and asked for suggestions-Maker's Mark. Then I tried Woodford Reserve. Now that I'm really interested in bourbons, a few days ago I purchased 4 different beginner brands-Eagle Rare (like), Buffalo Trace (sipping with this video, like), Elijah Craig (not yet), Knob Creek (not yet), had a small bottle of Bulleit (? will revisit). I'm not a snob yet so I drink mine neat with a glass of ice water as a chaser a few minutes after a sip. Thanks for the instructions!

I tried it with my homemade clear ice, the fragrance and taste blew me away. It's kind of sweet, which won me over. Now I'll have to try my other Bourbons on the rocks as well.

Something cheap for my friends that like to mix it, and a 100 proof Knob Creek, which I explain is for sipping only. Sipping bourbon does not go into a mixed drink. However, I've found that my guests enjoy the most expensive whisk(e)y I can afford.

Like mine neat, but had to comment that ice balls have LESS surface area than any other ice shape, therefore melt slower, adding less water to the good stuff during the drink... unless you let the damned thing melt away, in which case, you are drinking too slowly.

My personally preferred way to have my Bourbon is in a Manhattan. Maker's Mark usually, sans the cherry. Maker's really holds up to the ice and dillusion, and it plays really well with Antica and the bitters.

    • @spencergrady4575
      @spencergrady4575 5 років тому +4

Difference is Jack (MOST Jack) is cheap and expected to be mixed because, while it can certainly taste good straight to some, it doesn't have nearly the amount of minute flavor notes as some other, possibly higher priced bourbons, ryes, etc. i.e. don't add coke to red label Whistle Pig (and don't be fooled by the price of blue label, it's worse..), but knock yourself out with standard Jack. Again, no offense to Jack, just different notes and tasting experiences.
P.S. at the end of the day still all opi in based, so feel free to tell me to gtfo

    Some thoughts:
I agree with the Scot, growing up within sight of the Auchentoshan distillery, who said, "The best way to drink whisky is the way that suits you best."
I think ice is perfectly acceptable, especially in a hot clime in summer, and especially with a hot, spirity overproof whisk(e)y. I prefer a small sliver of ice over a big cube, but to each their own. Initially, that hot spirit is a little too feisty; the ice melts a bit and it achieves perfection. It melts some more and it's too watery. You add some more whisky and it's too hot. You add some more ice. "Wash, rinse, repeat." Repeatedly. 😀
An alternative is to chill the bottle in the fridge or the freezer. The whisky becomes thicker and syrupy, and it's an experience everyone should try at least once - but the chill knocks down the volatiles and diminishes the nose. What you make up in mouthfeel you will lose in subtle aromas.
A well matured spirit needs nothing at all except a glass at room temperature - assuming your room is neither 110F or 28F... That's the best way for the best whiskies.

With each new whisk(e)y/bourbon I come across, I try each way. Some I like straight, while others are better (to me) on the rocks or with water. Depends on the whiskey and my mood, I suppose. If I'm getting a whiskey at a bar, I like it "straight up". That's chilled with ice, then strained. It does dilute the whiskey, but not as much as on the rocks.
