I take mine with two ice cubes. At first I get the pure experience, then slowly the water dash where some flavores begin to show. Then a little more water where other nuances come out. Every Bourbon has a unique series of transitions , and toward the end they're all refreshing and cold.
The reason the ice ball works better is because it has LESS surface area than broken up ice. Therefore less ice touches the bourbon and it doesn't water it down as fast.

At 3:01 you made a technical error, you said a "ball has more surface area." A sphere, or ball, has the smallest surface of any shape, hence why they are used. Less surface area per volume means less melting.
Like mine neat, but had to comment that ice balls have LESS surface area than any other ice shape, therefore melt slower, adding less water to the good stuff during the drink... unless you let the damned thing melt away, in which case, you are drinking too slowly.
My personally preferred way to have my Bourbon is in a Manhattan. Maker's Mark usually, sans the cherry. Maker's really holds up to the ice and dillusion, and it plays really well with Antica and the bitters.
I once froze cherries and put them in my bourbon 🥃 I know it sounds not so grand, but it actually went down well and gave the bourbon a nice chill and there was a nice bourbon cherry at the end in it for me lol
Pour half the juice out a jar of cherries and fill up with Bordeaux and a splash of whisky. Use these cherries as garnishes for your drinks, or just straight out the jar.
Normally a Speyside or Islay whisky drinker personally, however after getting a bottle of Bulleit Bourbon I'm actually starting to enjoy this American stuff. Though I cannot stand ice in whisky; the cold just masks a lot of the flavour
Difference is Jack (MOST Jack) is cheap and expected to be mixed because, while it can certainly taste good straight to some, it doesn't have nearly the amount of minute flavor notes as some other, possibly higher priced bourbons, ryes, etc. i.e. don't add coke to red label Whistle Pig (and don't be fooled by the price of blue label, it's worse..), but knock yourself out with standard Jack. @@spencergrady4575 Yeah.... Pound for pound spirits are cheaper than beer, and a lot faster ride to the promised land (if ye know what I mean) noses and pallets are not what firewater is about.
Some thoughts: I agree with the Scot, growing up within sight of the Auchentoshan distillery, who said, "The best way to drink whisky is the way that suits you best." I think ice is perfectly acceptable, especially in a hot clime in summer, and especially with a hot, spirity overproof whisk(e)y. I prefer a small sliver of ice over a big cube, but to each their own. Initially, that hot spirit is a little too feisty; the ice melts a bit and it achieves perfection. It melts some more and it's too watery. You add some more whisky and it's too hot. You add some more ice. "Wash, rinse, repeat." Repeatedly. 😀 An alternative is to chill the bottle in the fridge or the freezer. The whisky becomes thicker and syrupy, and it's an experience everyone should try at least once - but the chill knocks down the volatiles and diminishes the nose. What you make up in mouthfeel you will lose in subtle aromas. A well matured spirit needs nothing at all except a glass at room temperature - assuming your room is neither 110F or 28F... That's the best way for the best whiskies.
Very typical of an American drinking bourbon or any alcohol. And that is the money you spend. A lot of times most American base their taste and opinions relatively to the the cost of the alcohol. I find that very pathetic.
Good stuff. I like Jack and Coke but I find myself drinking it straight more. I like getting the full taste of it. I was really wary of Jim Beam Kentucky straight burbon because it was cheap but it actually taste pretty decent. I think the only whiskey I tried so far that tasted like garbage was Tullamore Dew whiskey
Again I've made a stunning Lynchburg Lemonade with Single Barrel JackD (Sugar syrup, lemon juice, Cointreau, Sprite, JackD). And of course I prefer to drink it neat as well sometimes. My point is being conservative makes you miss out new taste sensations.
llcoolmartine Again he said bourbon centered mixed drinks. Bourbon and coke jack and coke rum n coke tequila and coke vodka and coke (its been ordered) whiskey and coke See where hes going? That Lynchburg Lemonade you made sounds killer. But yeah, drinking coke x spirit is not only killing the flavor but like you said, losing out.
I like the laid back approach to your videos. Puts me in the sippin' mood. Haven't watched them all yet, but saw enough to subscribe. With each new whisk(e)y/bourbon I come across, I try each way. Some I like straight, while others are better (to me) on the rocks or with water. Depends on the whiskey and my mood, I suppose. Looking forward to seeing more of your channel, best of luck! Just dropped a very small ice cube into a shot of Wild Turkey 101. Used to drink this neat. No more! I waited till that bit of ice was gone. Cooled the pour just a touch and added that splash of water you talked about. Damn guess I learned something. Thank you for the video and stay safe!
My favorite way - in cold glass(no ice) just put in the fridge for some time before. Add whiskey or bourbon..drink, enjoy. If I do not have time..just drink whiskey. The end XD

Mixing bourbon bad...whaaaaaa. I mean an old fashioned. Manhattan. Sour. All these are great drinks that really put the bourbon on display and add depth and complexity. Each his own (and no way should you make a coke and whiskey lol)
I enjoy a bottom shelf bourbon with soda water and a twist of lemon. If I'm getting a whiskey at a bar, I like it "straight up". That's chilled with ice, then strained. It does dilute the whiskey, but not as much as on the rocks.
I appreciate this. Had a guy tell me that people that drink it neat are only trying to get drunk ans don't deserve to drink bourbon and should stick to PBR.

This is an old video, but I like the top two ways you gave. Drinking bourbon neat right now! 🥃
A real man has his drink the way he likes it.
Do you use soda?
Some thoughts:
I agree with the Scot, growing up within sight of the Auchentoshan distillery, who said, "The best way to drink whisky is the way that suits you best."
I think ice is perfectly acceptable, especially in a hot clime in summer, and especially with a hot, spirity overproof whisk(e)y. 😀
An alternative is to chill the bottle in the fridge or the freezer.
My grandfather drank crown on the rocks with a dash of water, not neat; so there's that :)
Remote Tactical so water with a dash of water? Good way to stay hydrated when drinking.
:) Cold, hard water, with a dash of liquid cold water :D
crown neat is pretty good, all that water and water isnt necessary
crown is already watered down
Not to be that guy, but crown isn't bourbon, it's Canadian whisky
I feel like I’ve seen this species before…
…ah yes- the baldbearded hipster
Very typical of an American drinking bourbon or any alcohol. And that is the money you spend. A lot of times most American base their taste and opinions relatively to the the cost of the alcohol. I find that very pathetic.
How I drink my bourbon; I don't call it whisky.
Nestor Dela Cruz it must suck not being an American. I wonder what that’s like? Guess I’ll never know, you’re pathetic
@Flood Light not necessarily, I can get a 30/40 dllr bottle which would compare to bourbons 3x the cost. Dont catch yourself buying the label.
1.) Open bottle.
2.) Drink it.
3.) Repeat till you want to stop, or stop by nature.

Don't stop till you wake up on the job, wondering how you got there. Usually there's a wife involved!!
I need to purchase this asap
So a manhattan or an old fashioned is the wrong way to drink bourbon? Your loss I guess...
llcoolmartine - clearly he's talking about soda not Bourbon centered mixed drinks...he even said and pictured a soda can..
I totally agree! That's why every month, I'm trying a different mixed drink... keep an eye out for those videos!
llcoolmartine Again he said bourbon centered mixed drinks.
Bourbon and coke
jack and coke
rum n coke
tequila and coke
vodka and coke (its been ordered)
whiskey and coke
See where hes going? That Lynchburg Lemonade you made sounds killer. But yeah, drinking coke x spirit is not only killing the flavor but like you said, losing out.
llcoolmartine jack daniels isn’t bourbon
I like the laid back approach to your videos. Puts me in the sippin' mood. Haven't watched them all yet, but saw enough to subscribe. With each new whisk(e)y/bourbon I come across, I try each way. Some I like straight, while others are better (to me) on the rocks or with water. Depends on the whiskey and my mood, I suppose. Looking forward to seeing more of your channel, best of luck! A bottle of Elijah Craig Small Batch is beckoning me. Cheers, Chris!
From the minute I got into bourbon, I have always drinking it neat.
Cool stuff 👍😎
What's the the best cigar that goes with a Bourbon?
Just dropped a very small ice cube into a shot of Wild Turkey 101. Used to drink this neat. No more! I waited till that bit of ice was gone. Cooled the pour just a touch and added that splash of water you talked about. Damn guess I learned something. Thank you for the video and stay safe!
Just the guy I’ve been looking for. Thanks!!!
Thanks for breaking it down in plain English ! Just opened up my first bottle of knob creek bourbon.
Great videos bro! Love the background music. What do you like about bourbon over scotch?
I like this video, nice job. You made it plain and clear. It takes years to learn how to drink whiskey, and actually enjoy it.
When sipping...
How much of a mouthful should you take?
My favorite way - in cold glass(no ice) just put in the fridge for some time before. Add whiskey or bourbon..drink, enjoy. If I do not have time..just drink whiskey. The end XD
Awesome, man! No doubt. Learning as we merrily roll along....
Good video! First time watching this and already a fan.Lookin' into ways to pair various Bourbons with my Stogies.Keep up the good work.Woof!🥃🥃🥃🔥💨💨💨
I love your channel and this is my favorite clip of all. Thanks for the education!
You crack me up dude! I too hate it when folks put coke in their bourbon! I take it neat and sometimes with a few drops of water like I do with Four Roses. Cheers!
I wish you could give some recommendations of Bourbon to try for beginners. Great video 👍
For beginners... DONT!!! 40 years I been trying to kick this shit!!! It's a life breaker.
That escalated quickly...lol. Seriously though, good luck to you man.
Mixing bourbon bad...whaaaaaa. I mean an old fashioned. Manhattan. Sour. All these are great drinks that really put the bourbon on display and add depth and complexity. Each his own (and no way should you make a coke and whiskey lol)
“I look like I ride a bike, but I drive a Honda”
Instant sub...right there.
Good shit
For mixing what we can use?
Can you give me some tips which whisky is worth the a try I opened a JimBeam last night it was pretty okey :)
A Boy and His Subaru: People who want to get drunk order Cuervo shots or fireball or vodka redbull.
The proper way to drink bourbon is traight from the bottle, chilled in the freezer, that's how I like it.
brilliant video. thanks
What song is that in your intro and outro? It's really cool
I love this video. There is really only one way to drink bourbon, neat, but i really enjoyed this.
Your cinematography is simply superb. Oh, and your bourbon review is excellent, too. Nicely done.
i actually like to mix bourbon with a sweet tea, you still taste a lot of the bourbon and it has less alcohol bite
