Rimac Robotaxi! Bugatti CEO’s ‘Verne’ Ready To Take On Tesla

- What does Mate Rimac - the Bugatti CEO who’s currently in the limelight for launching a new hypercar with a V16 engine - do in his spare time?
Why, he teams up with a couple of buddies to solve the thorny issue of autonomous ride-hailing services of course.
Enter Verne, a new company that Rimac and co. have founded to: design and build a fully autonomous electric vehicle that offers Rolls-Royce levels of luxury; to re-envision ride-hailing apps with added personalisation; and to create the infrastructure that keeps these ‘cars’ clean and charged and running nearly 24/7.
Now, you might scoff, but the rise of Rimac (both that of the company and its founder) has been meteoric, going from unheard of Croatian start-up to a supplier of batteries and motors to the likes of BMW and Porsche. Mate himself is now CEO of Bugatti, too.
Will Verne be another homerun for Rimac? Has it stolen a march on Tesla’s forthcoming robotaxi? Top Gear’s Associate Editor, Tom Ford, has been to Croatia to find out…

@@johnkeating5966 def not the same. We're talking robotaxi here, so the main focus is on "does it actually work as such", not so much on neat screens or the seating arrangement, or whatever. As someone who works in the autonomous car industry. I've been in a total of 3 different driverless cars on public roads. It takes a lot of engineers to write code for these cars.
Code based systems don’t work at scale.
Tesla ditched heuristic code for AI based learning.

Rimac has essentially nothing in these fields and you can see that where they have offloaded the whole autonomous part of the project to MobileEye. MobelEye is going to fail at autonomous, they are using the wrong approach.
So Rimac has nothing here but a concept on how a RoboTaxi system may work. That is the easy part, trivial even.

Matej Rimac is an innovative young man
While I don't dispute you about Rimac, this is a technology that's been going on in San Francisco for years now.
It would be wild if there was a lidar network that autonomous cars all tied into, like at intersections and on street lights. A full 3d picture for the car to use.
Simple and clean line.
“Does very bad things to physics”

But can it outsmart a cone placed on the hood?
I think that would even caused some human drivers to panic, can you imagine sitting at a traffic light and somebody runs up and puts a cone on your car 😂
You'll probably spend a couple seconds going "WTF!?!?!?!'
Rimac is living the dream. The dude was working in his garage not even a decade ago
Look at the heights he was able to accomplish, I know it feels like your back is against the wall right now and nothing is working out.
Just keep on pushing and I hope whoever is reading this achieves whatever their heart truly desires. That is positive and good for them ❤❤❤❤
I can just imagine everyone racing to use the robotaxi because some celebrity released an album.
The car design is fine, my question is they have no real world driving data??? Because of that, I assume it will operate within a tight tolerance of where you can go. It’s good to see others trying but I think the march of 9’s will make it difficult for them once operating as others are finding out. Tesla’s general AI solution I think will win in the end.
Yes they will map the area of some large city and taxi will drive only in that area
Rimac collaborates with Alphabet (Google) which has the third largest AI capacity in the US, Tesla's Dojo is not even on the top 10 list in the US, no need to worry.
Tesla doesn't have AGI you know that right?
@@BranislavB-hx9zy Tesla has NVIDIA chips though and over 6 million vehicles collecting real world data which is required for it to work in the first place.
In order to catch up you'll need to build more factories than Tesla and at bare minimum be equally efficient in each factory at producing vehicles and on top of that you'll need the capital and expertise for those factories. After this you'll need approximately $250B in order to build those vehicles and lots of human workers & automation.
After this you'll need to find +6m people willing to buy those vehicles and hope you can sell them at a profit.
After this you'll need them to actively drive around (more than Tesla) in order to catch up to their amount of data.
After this you'll need to be able to process the data faster than Tesla & actually take advantage of that data correctly and so on.
Nobody is catching up, it's game over.
I love this design.
But the hard part is actually getting a car to drive itself, which, no one has achieved yet. Tesla is nearly there, but that took 6m vehicles worth of driving data , mutli billions and 10 years.
Tesla isn't even close. Waymo is MUCH closer, they seem to still fall victim to occasional edge-cases. FSD is a con, full-stop.
The Teslae are reasonable at it, but having tried full self drive a few times in a friends Model 3 last month, it's not ready for prime time. As a take-over for a long trip on the freeway or interstate - likely. Navigating a busy downtown or dealing with roundabouts, terrifying.
Achieving it is not the only issue. In the US public transportation is only so popular and there are plenty of options already. I just don't see more people using public transportation just because there is no driver. It's still shared with others and it's not waiting for you to make a quick get away when needed. Our use of cars is not just pre planned trips from one location to another. Sometimes we just "go for a drive", we see what's new and stop anytime we see something interesting. There have been many estimates about how much the market is worth and I don't think any of them are close to reality and might even be based on getting 100% of the market with no competition. There is no way to make back the money spent on these things.
@frankcoffey Robotaxis will be on par with public transport costs, but you now also have your own space, no need to wait in long queues for trains/busses etc. You can relax, stretch out, watch a movie/do work etc. That's a huge value add for the consumer
@@louisdude1 I still don't think that's new customers. It's just a slice of the pie of people that will consider public transportation at all. We shall see what that's worth but I think it's going to be a tiny fraction of what has been estimated.
Can’t believe this was the same program that was hosted by Jeremy, James , and Richard. 😢
I think it's cool to see a thought exercise like this into the eventual autonomous ride hailing future. But it's a pretty hollow unveiling when people understand that the driving software isn't mature yet (at any company)

@@Renzsu the big difference is people aren't the ones buying these cars. they just have to pay for the fair which if it can compete with ubers or taxis then it's worth it. the push for ev's is basically telling people to get rid of their current vehicle and buy an ev and have a payment that you probably didn't have before.

It really is the elephant in the room and quite disappointing that they didn't press the issue. That said, what they are doing here really seems to be asking for Waymo to license their software stack, which might in fact not be a bad bet given how Google (Android, etc) have operated in the past. Conversely, they might be trying to sell the physical cars to Waymo itself, which has seemingly given up on developing its own car in favor of partnerships (Jaguar i-Pace being the current test bed of choice). Rimac really made its name as a supplier to others so the fact that there could be a lot more to this iceberg than we can see makes a lot of sense, especially if they are deep in talks.
The autonomous driving is done by Mobileye. Rimac Technology does, as far as I know, all of their infotainments, applications and software on the Controller Area Network (CAN) level themselves, so it will likely be the case with Verne as well.

As a citizen of Croatia, I would most sincerely like the success of this project. Mate Rimac could be in the rank of Nikola Tesla, but I personally doubt that this story will take a completely different course. Many times richer, more technologically advanced countries have spent billions of dollars, they do not show the final solutions of autonomous vehicles. When analyze the current level of development of cameras and sensors for detection and it is impossible for AI to make 100% correct decisions in real conditions of vehicle use. It is nice to dream, but the current state of technology and electronics has limits that limit autonomous application. The time ahead will prove that .With this promotion of its autonomous vehicle, Rimac only wanted to justify the invested funds from shareholders and the EU. The years ahead will tell if I'm wrong.!!!

He said he has a list... This list is what might make him only viable competition to Tesla, since they lost so much time and energy on Cybertruck and Semi. Rooting for Rimac but without demonstration drive they might be 10 years from production...
Very nice video keep doing ones like it
great vacuum cleaner!
Why not? We need the clean world. Not dirty like your words are! Stay cool, boy. And don't be jealous. This is not good like your mommy said.
We need the cleaner world! Vacuum cleaner is good product! Stay cool. Your jealousy is big!😊😊😊
@@miroslavpendelj9685 jealousy? go back to school kid.
@@hoody3758 All small Tesla shareholders agree with you this is unfair, how dare Rimac make the RoboTaxi that Tesla investors have invested and are waiting for that Elon has been talking about for so many years?
We need a bigger car for a robo taxi. So if you have 3 or 4 people going somewhere you have to call up 2 cars…. Are they going to arrive the same time?.
I'm sure they will develop larger versions if this works. Targeting 90% of rides in the first product seems logical
Most of the time when taxis are used there's only 1 or 2 passengers. Sure there's times when there will be more but for the most part this design makes sense
in theory they should. but i agree a bigger version would be better for large groups or families. nothing wrong with having choice.
We? Who is - we? Asia? Europe? We, Alastair... !?
@@jeff119990This is not a bus, man!
This was better coverage than carwow
Nice plan... it's an interesting concept! End to end service*
Love that they do it before Musk but we need more public transport not more cars, you can’t have so many cars inside cities
so more buses in cities? why not a small car that can be parked away until needed? instead of buses doing routes all day long and having people having to walk from every destination. why can't someone just have their own taxi so to speak? i think it's a much better idea than a bus. smaller vehicle, don't have a bus with 3 or 4 people inside waiting around until their stop.
They are not doing it before Tesla, that’s the point. This is just a design concept not a functioning vehicle.
@@alastairhatt360 dont bother - protypes are easy, production is... well 99% chance nobody here can complete this sentence.
@@alastairhatt360 Tesla doesn't even have a prototype driverless vehicle. Tesla is all about hype. They were the first to announce an electric pickup truck but other manufacturers beat them to that. The robotaxi vehicle in this video will release first than tesla vaporware robotaxi. I'm still waiting for my Tesla Roadster 2.0 by the way.
Less people use cars to commute using this method … car share taxis
Why is it only a two door, two passenger vehicle? At least Waymo has full size cars!
rofl waymo is a complete joke
They answered, 9 out of 10 taxi/Uber rides are 2 people or less. If you are more people, you book more Vernes
Will be millions of Tesla’s which holds 5 people so hardly an issue. 2 seaters with more space will fill the need of most
@@brei21This just highlights how shortsighted this is. No one is going to pay twice as much when the option of an Uber / UberXL still exists. People want to talk to one another, not play fortnight in separate pods.
It's also embarrassingly inefficient to transport just two people in a huge several ton vehicle, so the idea that we should flood the road with more two seaters rather than encourage ride sharing or public transport is laughable.
Also, 10% of journeys is a hell of a lot of journeys and for what? An excessive amount of leg room and a sloped windscreen? It has prioritized the external styling over its main purpose - actually transporting people.
@@supersnail5000 inefficient it’s to have 5 seater cars driving around all day to be used by one or two people in the back. Of course if more room it’s needed you will have other options and this does not fit that need. If you need an Uber XL means 90% of current taxi/UBER cars do not meet your needs either. So if by any chance there is an alternative that can make most of them electric and safer, welcome. It’s not an all or nothing, we will need a different space/cargo but if this replace most of the taxis around the city I will be more than happy.

I'm excited to see this in Orlando
Dude the EPIC music is so so loud, please STOP
Love the Nevera, I just hope they don’t kill their company trying to take this on. This sort of project will require far more capital than they have on hand.
Stop comparing this to Tesla, Elon has been promising robotaxis since 2017 and till this day they don't even have a prototype DRIVERLESS vehicle. Waymo is currently the leader in autonomous driving tech ranked at level 4, while Tesla's autonomy tech is at level 2.
Yes but, Elon is the world's best at lifting share prices, by focusing on potentials in the future of conglomerate companies he has built, no one else can do it in the car industry!
😂 You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Tesla is the only company that will be able to truly solve general autonomy, and they're doing it now...
@@coolpool1969 Okay tesla fanboi. Maybe if you do a bit of research and stop repeating everything that Elon hypes, maybe you might actually learn that Mercedes and Waymo are miles ahead of tesla.
@onsokumaru4663 Waymo's solution works for the most part but is very brittle and isn't financially scalable. They rely on HD mapping every city they operate in and their cars cost at least a hundred thousand dollars. They're still using outdated tech (mostly hard coded logic). Tesla have their own highly efficient inference chips in the cars, using only cameras, their system is vision only and doesn't rely on HD maps, and they are using true end-to-end AI and they have millions of vehicles gathering data. They are also spending billions on massive compute farms, which are already up and running. Training AI is all about *data* and they will have millions of miles of data to train on, because the Tesla fleet can provide it. Waymo has a tiny, tiny fraction of that and no way to increase it to that scale. I could go on but it's game over for everyone else. The latest version of Tesla's FSD is already 95% there, and it's only been operational for less than a year.
@onsokumaru4663 FFS UA-cam deleted my reply 🙄 I have done my research. Mercedes is laughable but Waymo does have working Level 4. The problem is, it's extremely costly, it's using outdated tech which doesn't easily scale, and most importantly, they don't have the data, which is the most important aspect of training AI. Tesla is gathering millions of miles of data off the fleet, spending billions on massive compute farms, have super-cheap tech in the cars and the right approach to succeed (end-to-end neural nets).
Elon: -Hold my beer!
Bruh, the fact that they started with the car first tells me everything i need to know. This ain't no competitor this is a FSD license client ;)..
