Clearly a different experience with no engine noise but I can imagine roof down that could be quite enjoyable. Why people bought diesel roadsters so they could listen to a truck engine rattle along roof down I have no idea. I know, right? Whenever I see VW Eoses (Eosi? Eos) or Megane CCs or whatever and they have a diesel rattling away and the roof down I'm just wondering how that's remotely enjoyable.
Anyone who thinks a diesel convertible is noisy has probably never driven one. They're not like a 1980s non-turbo diesel Peugeot.. 50mpg + and loads of torque when you need it makes a car thats great cross country and will effortlessley do very long trips without filling up every five minutes and you can't hear the engine when you're moving on a modern one. I don't really see much of merit in this MG. Side views ok, fronts fussy, rears gopping. Touch screens would pi** me off in two minutes as would the charging times and although its clearly quick in accelleration it doesn't seem to have much going for it in driver involvement but I suppose if you wanted that you wouldn't be buying an electric car in the first place.
@@mambastu Its the usual. Lots of look-at-me stuff to tell people in the office about but unlikely to be very nice to actually drive or own. The doors are a perfect example. They look cool and in a picture or on a spec sheet its great. With respect to EV's they have left the West behind. It goes to show what a country can do when it's politicians aren't being lobbied by oil companies to supress new technology that competes with them, and their media isn't hooked on anti EV headlines.

The more videos I watch with this car, the more I like it. It's going to be so much more affordable than the next generation Porsche Boxster/Cayman EV (of course). And my only real gripe with it are those ridiculous rear lights.
Not so long ago, it was considered a long term issue to use the door hop, as over time, it put unnecessary stress on the area where the windscreen frame is attached to the body, so is this now a non issue?
Cars of the early 2000s as I know can withstand vehicles heavier than themselves driving over the windscreen pillars directly. So a small weight from a human is going to put negligible stress on a modern car's windscreen given all the focus in the last 20 years or so on NCAP and crash safety - you would hope
It’s a lovely car. as for the MG E thing, then so could Mini have called theirs the MIN-E….instead of the MINI COOPER S E etc etc The MG Cyberster is a super tribute to those Classic 1960’s Roadsters. Lovely car indeed. Love its looks.
Thanks for the honest review, unfortunately it cost approximately 10,000£ than I was expecting, it will cost even more in Europe. For a while, I will stick with my Z4, Hopefully in two or three years I will found a secondhand with a reasonable price.
In Australia, given our huge taxes on cars, no incentives on electric vehicles . This will sell for around $145,000 - $165.000. It has no chance of selling in any numbers at all

Also, love that the glove box does not contain a thick car manual that nobody ever reads! For all automakers, please keep that kinda stuff online. 😊
With EVs you can get extra power almost for free, since a more powerful motor isn't that much more expensive or heavy than a less powerful motor. Hence even the base RWD single motor version has 350 hp. Handling is highly affected by weight, which is a challenge for EVs since they must haul around this heavy battery, although it is partially made up for by the fact that the heavy battery is in the floor, which lowers the center of gravity. I reckon the better buy is the single motor version, which is still plenty powerful, but will handle a bit better since it is lighter, which also gives an additional 40 miles of range. If you want truly better handling, you'd have to get a single motor version with a smaller battery, which would cut down on the weight by a lot, but most people would not accept a modern EV with say just 150 miles of range, and would rather take the bigger battery instead.
@@whatcar Highly unlikely. That and the body roll together are big red flags at poor chassis development. If its one or another it can be suspension related but when its both thats a much larger problem.

It looks very pretty and if I was forced to buy electric this is probably the only EV I would consider. Thanks for the detailed review. I did find some of the bad things you found, such as the shimmy, a bit concerning.
I struggle with that idea. Regardless if it gets cheap fast or not its a roadster. They are usually used as weekend/sunny day playthings (some are driven everyday too but most aren't) and as such they tend to spend a lot of time sitting about and do few miles. The idea that this will ever be a bargain is limited by how long that battery can last in those circumstances. Since most struggle to get past 8/10 years and sitting really doesn't help I can see a lot of these needing a battery at very low mileage. Given that thats a huge cost its hard to see how its ever going to be worth it over an ice like a Miata which is half the cost in the first place and highly unlikely to need major work for decades at low mileage. Yes this has more power but so do lots of cars - thats not why most people but a roadster.
@@siraff4461 a "miata" is not the same market.....mx5 thing is overused....its not trying to be...7 year warranty in China they get lifetime warranty. How many MGs have needed a new battery?
Fantastically comprehensive review. Well done. Really, REALLY interested in one of these (RWD- better range, cheaper and should be a little more agile- especially the front end) Did you test drive the RWD? And very well done for actually going for a rapid charge. This should be imperative on any EV test to see real world charge speeds. Always loved roadsters and this has a stunning design. Closest petrol equivalent is the BMW Z4 which is much more expensive for a similar package. (GT more than an outright sports car). Shame that it is a Chinese company and not "British" but hopefully better built and more reliable that way!
Nice car but tricky sell imo. I'm an EV fan, but if this was my second, "play" car (not that I can afford that) I'd go probably EV for the day to day drudge workhorse (plus bit of long-term penny and planet saving) and petrol for the frivolous weekend fun.
I think that is a good point. Soon getting an Enqaq, but that is my reliable A to be car and load lugger. The 14 old MX5 will be for winding down B roads on a sunny day to the pub in a "spirited " manner still. I really do not need 500bhp for that, prefer the small size and steering feel even if slower of the MX5.
That's what I think also. Spacious 4x4 ev for everyday use, funny 2+2 sportcar (possibly manual and awd) for the weekend. I'm moving to Canada from south Europe, so I guess I'll need an awd vehicle, first or secondo car, regardless. But I guess the story is the same in rainy countries like UK.

I don’t understand the problem with controlling AC with the screen. It’s a modern car with climate control. For me, it’s set and forget. I rarely have to change it and if I do, there’s voice commands to do so.
I adjust it every time I get in the car, sometimes it's hot, sometimes it's not. Sometimes I need AC, and sometimes I'll just lower the windows when it's a few minute long drive. Most of the time I turn it off a minute before I arrive at the destination and vent the moisture away, at high fan speed, so it doesn't stink inside the next time I fire it up. I don't like how the Auto setting blasts air at max speed with closed circulation to get it to a low temp as fast as possible, as it's too loud - I'd rather set it to 3/4 speed myself and get to the low temp setting slightly longer. So leaving it on auto all the time is not for me. And then I fiddle with it during driving too if, for instance, my hands are getting cold from the AC vents next to the gauge cluster, or it's getting too hot. Long story short, it's there to make us comfortable and I use it all the time.
I predict that this car in a year or 2... given depreciation value WILL be a much sought after Future Classic & Very good value for money in a couple of years time - especially with low mileage!? I'LL BE LOOKING OUT FOR ONE.

Id be interested in a test of the RWD model, at some time in the future I'll need to replace my ageing Mercedes AMG SLK55 V8 and have previously been really disappointed by the whole Porsche Boxster thing even though the press hype up the car. A BMW Z4 M40i would probably fit the bill and it would have the same power as the RWD Cyberster, though could I live without the engine noise in a "sports" car.
I sold my Mx5 ND2 because the combustion aspect is holding it back. Even a Dacia Spring will have superior throttle response to a Ferrari. EV motors are increidble for sports cars and i cannot wait for the Mg Cyberster to be available in my country as its the first cabrio EV, something I've been waiting for a long time. Most people buying EVS dont care about the environment, they care about incredible response time, great reliability and tiny running costs
The ND2 works becasue its fun at low speeds and so light, its playful. This MG is nothing like it. I went with the 981 S as i wanted the sound and its quite practical with 2 boots. I feel like a kid in a race car. Ive driven taycans, model 3 perfomance and have the base The MG will feel the same in terms of instant torque, but looses all the practicality, cant beleive it has less boot space than a boxster. Range wont be great and it cant handled better with that much weight.its for a retired gent, wafting around. EV sports- the newer taycans handle really well. The EV boxster/cayman will handle as best as they can. EV sports cars are really hybrids at this point.
@@Pedro-ku1wt I've had over 20 cars. Driven multiple exotics and supercars so I'm aware of combustion throttle response. The Mx5 btw is a 7500rpm naturally aspirated engine on a car that weighs 990kg... It's very responsive compared to 99% of all "sports cars" sold today
WLTP is useful for comparing cars against each other, why is that difficult for some people to understand. Sometimes I get more, sometimes less. It depends on the situation.

Far to many derogatory or tongue in cheeks comments about Scotland for my liking. I grew up in Aberdeenshire and the views in this video certainly showed it in a good light. Now with regards the car. I owned both the MG ZR which for a diesel with minimal HP it was one of the most fun and balanced cars I ever owned and I have owned north of 30 cars and driven at least that number again over the years. The MG ZS 180 (2.5L V6) was an awesome car but liked to drink fuel 5 miles to the Litre and living in The western Isles at the time it was not practical as fuel was more expensive than on the mainland. I have not driven any of the new breed of MG but was speaking to a guy yesterday who was raving about his HS and they do look pretty good when I am out and about. My son & I were down South last week picking up an MX5 Mk1 and I now get the appeal of two seater sports car so maybe in the future I would like to own one of these. The other thing about this film was the availability of really fast charger in Montrose for our i-Pace so I am on board with the EV revolution but that may not last much longer. Well made video and there are certainly things to like about that car but I for one would wait a couple of years for it to be a more economical option.
Regrettably can’t afford one but having been looking forward to its launch since seeing it in concept form three or so years ago I’m disappointed only in myself for not having the cash. I’d forgive the steering wheel partially blocking the screen - I think; but having to crane to look at it is a bit of a hazard and distraction, no?All in all, roll on my lottery win!
I like some aspects of this car but I think they completely dropped the ball on the interior. To me it's a complete mess of cheap, shiny plastic and an abundance of fiddly screens with poor visibility and ugly graphics. If they want my interest they will have to redo this. I think they should keep it much more simple, think of the driver's ergonomics and ability to keep eyes on the road and use a lot better materials for buttons etc. THEN it would be a really cool car.
Its 2024 and still having to listen to these reviewers complaining about buttons is like complaining about why don't we still ride horses to work. I'm just tired of hearing nearly every car reviewers /journalists endlessly bitching about buttons with no end in sight for the past few years, just LET IT GO. Just show us the car and people can decide for themselves, also its not like most of us are here watching with interest to buy every car being shown, we love cars and we just want to be entertained save the button arguments for the dealership although I dont think most people care and if they do just buy a different car that has 300 buttons that you require to drive.
Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC Motor) did a good job with this MG. It was also smart of them to market their EVs through a British brand.

@@thinfourth Thats just being obtuse. Battery life expectancy is well documented as are the issues they have with sitting around for long periods of time unused. There are plenty of old sports cars going strong at 30+ years old with basic maintenance - rust is much more likely to finish them off than mechanical issues. Battery electric cars? The average age of on the road ones is 3.5 years compared to 18 years for combustion. Its easy to pass that off as being because they are newer but that has come down from an average of 3.7 years so something is taking them off the roads at a quarter of the age of combustion. Would you like to hazard a guess at what that is? Then as mentioned that issue will be exacerbated by the sitting idle for long periods. i prefer less power and better handling
I would certainly consider it as a replacement for my A5 cabriolet, but worried about reflection's on the screens in bright sunshine

3 going on 4 years old looking at 34k for dual motor with less than 40k miles

Is it a coincidence that the rear lights are similar to the Volvo S60/S90?
Its 2024 and still having to listen to these reviewers complaining about buttons is like complaining about why don't we still ride horses to work.
I'm just tired of hearing nearly every car reviewers /journalists endlessly bitching about buttons with no end in sight for the past few years, just LET IT GO. Just show us the car and people can decide for themselves, also its not like most of us are here watching with interest to buy every car being shown, we love cars and we just want to be entertained save the button arguments for the dealership although I dont think most people care and if they do just buy a different car that has 300 buttons that you require to drive.

Its highly unlikely there will be many of these around in 10 years and by 15 years they will be all but gone. As a used buyer thats going to sting someone.
@@siraff4461 We both know that long term studies of batteries are impossible
As they catch fire once a week
@@thinfourth provide the data for MG fires? Or pipe down
The MG of today has nothing to do with the MGs of yesteryear. It's just a brand bought by a Chinese car manufacturer.
Yes, SAIC to be specific, who's now getting hit with a 38% import tarif in the EU for presumed unfair state subsidies(they apparently declined to cooperate with EU investigations/probe).
MG went bust and were making average cars. At least someone took a punt on it and valued it's history. They dont owe you or anyone anything.
