    You MUST check out Roy's iconic "Crying." He was also a member of the Traveling Wilbury's before his death. By the way, a lot of his fans thought Roy was blind because he always performed wearing sunglasses. He was extremely near-sighted and had to wear glasses on stage. Early in his career, he broke his regular glasses before a performance, and the only other pair he had were prescription shades. He wore them for that concert, and after that, had a rep for wearing sunglasses at night! They became his trademark and also made him super-hip! Shades at night? WOW!

    • @debbiedebster5806

      Had to reply: that song is AMAZING & when I was little, I did assume he was blind lol
      I mentioned "In Dreams" & David Lynch, in his movie Mulholland Dr, "Crying" is used, but by this woman Rebekah Del Rio, "Llorando" is her version. You should check it out!😉

      Just to add a bit; Roy said he'd chartered a private plane, for a concert in Atlanta. On the plane, he'd switched from his regular glasses to his prescription sunglasses, forgot his clear glasses on the plane & had to do the concert in sunglasses. The next day, he flew (on another plane) to NY, to fly to London, to tour with the Beatles. Photos of that highly photographed tour went "around the world" & "I was sort of stuck. Instant Image."

    As a side note, most people don't to this day realize just how good he was. Another thing that most don't know is that a lot of whom we all call the greatest bands of all time were his opening acts. Namely the Beatles, U2 the Rolling Stones and a few others. That in itself was proven when a fair share of those who performed along side him when they made this show, showed up to pay homage.

He was very respected by artists of all genres of music whether country, folk, blues or rock. • @larrywt656
    @larrywt656 2 роки тому +1

    Roy Orbison was a legend, and just about as big a rock star that there ever was. One of the most memorable singing voices of all time. He spent the last few months of his life as a member of the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys (with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, George Harrison & Jeff Lynne). Although this song DOES go back to the black and white days, this video is actually one of the songs from Roy Orbison's 1988 live TV special Black & White Night, which was shot in black & white...and is one of the best music TV specials of all time. Amongst the background musicians are the members of Elvis Presley's TCB Band (including my cousin Ronnie on drums...Roy and Elvis were very close friends), Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Tom Waits, T-Bone Burnett, Bonnie Raitt, J.D. Souther, k.d. lang & Elvis Costello. This entire special is well worth checking out as it's absolutely brilliant.

  • @1Truckman
    @1Truckman Рік тому +2

    Elvis Presley was one of Roy's most ardent admirers, calling him merely "the voice"...He also refused to follow Roy's performance in any venue because he knew his vocal range could not match that level of talent...At any point in his career his voice could easily span three, perhaps four octaves without resorting to a falsetto voice...During a lull in his popularity, but during the rise of the British Invasion, Roy went to England to open a concert for the Beatles...The audience was shocked by his performance and he wound up doing 14 encores before the Beatles had to physically pull him off the stage so they could perform...He did his early live performances with no backup vocalists, no band members and no dancers on stage, just him standing in one place on stage with his guitar, never moving from the spot...If you'll notice in many of the Beatles' live performances John Lennon emulated that practice, standing alone with his feet and legs in the same stance as Roy...I don't believe the level of talent he displayed, both as a performer and a songwriter will be matched in my lifetime...

He passed on way too soon in 1988 at the age of 52. I was raised up on Roy as my Mama had his 24 greatest hits album :) You should hear his songs, "Leah", "In Dreams", "Uptown", "Workin' For The Man", "Blue Bayou", "Blue Angel". The bell sound is a xylophone played most excellently. Not only were you listening to Roy Orbison, but he had some big names singing backup on his Black and White night. Bonnie Raitt, k. d. lang, Jennifer Warnes, J. D. Souther, Jackson Browne, Steven Soles, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, T-Bone Burnett, Tom Waits, and others were all in the background. All the songs from the Black and White Night were fabulous!

    Singing back up on this are legends of rock and roll. Bruce Springsteen, KD Lang, Glenn Hardin, James Burton, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, Tom Waits, Jennifer Warnes. Singing back to the legend himself. They do another Pretty Woman. Check it out.

    When you've got A list musicians and singers backing you, you're great! I love spotting his band - Bruce Springsteen et al.

    That "bell" was a xylophone. Here's a cool story. When Elvis was first getting big in the 50s, you could book him to play a show for $100 a night. There was a concert promoter in Texas who heard Elvis drew big crowds, so he booked Elvis to play five shows in five different cities in Texas in the same week for $500. During that week, in two different cities, a young Roy Orbison and a young Buddy Holly went to see Elvis perform and both decided to get into music. Just think about how much we all owe that promoter for booking Elvis that week.

    Thanks for your reactions to the music of my youth. You brighten an old ladies day!
    Have you reacted to any Jerry Lee Lewis? “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” are two that you need to see live performances of because his nickname is The Killer. He plays piano like a madman!! So much fun. Keep up the great work ☮️🌼♥️

    Have you listened to the original Roy Orbison recording of this song? The strings and his younger voice were gorgeous.
    Regardless, I love to see younger people discover the incredible talent of former artists.
    Also, listen to the original recording of "I'm Hurtin'" if you want a boost!

    I also suggest "Crying," "In Dreams" and "Pretty Woman." The original studio recordings (late 1950s to early 1960s) are good. But I think the Black and White Night live versions are better. Roy was about 51 when this concert happened, and was still able to hit those high notes. He died the following year.
    He lost his first wife in a motorcycle accident, and lost two young sons in a house fire. A lot of his songs are sad. But he was (as far as I'm told) gentlemanly and very well-liked.
    Aside from the violin/string orchestra section, all his backup musicians and singers in the Black and White Night event were either stars in their own right, or were top-flight backups like James Burton who played lead guitar for everyone from Ricky Nelson to Elvis and outlived them all.

    I'll certainly get behind all the requests for "Crying". Particularly from this same show. Roy's voice was one of those once in a generation freak occurrences. A highly unique tonal character, plus range, stability, and control.

    He jada very tragic life. His wife, the love of his life, died in his arms. They were each on motorcycles and a car hit hers. A few years layer, he was on tour and left his 2 children in the care of his parents and there was a house fire and his kids died. I always feel that these beautiful love songs of his are written with his wife in mind. Especially Only The Lonely and also Crying Over You.
