So glad I grew up in the late 60's, 70's, and 80's.
Glad I did too!!!
Me too
Didn’t we all
Singer was Steve Walsh. Keyboard, piano and bongo drums as well.
The vocals are Steve Waish and Robbie Steinhart. Ronnie Platt took over as vocalist when Waish retired in 2014.
Ronnie Platt didn't join the band until 2014 when Steve Walsh retired. Steve Walsh was a phenomena singer and keyboard player! Tasha this song was written by guitarist Kerry Livgren he was the main writer for the band and yes he was on a spiritual journey,he left and changed to Christian music. He was an amazing lyricist and writer. You need to listen to "Miracles out of nowhere" and "The Wall"
I concur
Lol so cringey how confidently he said ronnie 😂
The author of this song, Kerry Livgren, who played guitars and keyboards for the band had been on a long spiritual journey when he wrote this song, and he became a Christian soon after.
Kansas was hot in the 80’s. All high school kids knew every song
Along with Chicago, Journey, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac
Don't you mean the '70's'!
@@Mark-ty6gm
I was going in high school in he 80’s
@@audreyschley8517 Class of '77' here. What's your point? BTW, you left out Boston, who had the best debut album of all time!
@@Mark-ty6gm holy you are annoying
@@z0ffi928 MYOFB Ah!!!
Tasha is loving the song and Tee is loving Tasha loving the song and I'm over here loving this reaction!
Saw Kansas in concert. They did a whole long section where they just jammed. It was awesome! The crowd loved it.
Great breakdown of the lyrics Tasha. ❤
Thank you!
You should watch one of the live performances of this. Steve Walsh works his buns off switching instruments and singing. Also, VoicePlay has an outstanding ACAPELA cover of this great song.
Supernatural introduced an entire generation to 70’s and 80’s Rock, especially this song. I burned a playlist of songs featured on the show on CD for my employees which I called The Dean’s List.
My kid she's 26 and was listening to Kansas she asked me who that is because it's the same song the use on supernatural I told her Kansas and that was a great song and band.
Straight up LOVE Tasha's breakdown of the lyrics.... This song is much more than a vocals and instrumental storm of a song. Just as importantly are the lyrics in this song and I was so thankful to see the introspective breakdown...Both of you bring so much to the table in these reactions so thanks for the time and effort y'all put in to make these videos. Pease keep on bringing us these great reactions!!!
"Point of Know Return", "Dust in the Wind", "People of the South Wind", "Hold On", "Play the Game Tonight" are just a few of some other great Kansas music!
Dust in the Wind, will give you a whole different sound, with a VIOLIN included!
Steve Walsh! Best progressive rock singer of all time. Check out “Love and Miracles out of Nowhere “ on the same LP.
All of the music of Kansas is very profound and extremely spiritual. The Wall, Portrait (He Knew), Miracles Out of Nowhere, Dust in he Wind, etc. Have very spiritual lyrics and the band were all master musicians. Carry On My Wayward Son is their signature song and yes , v ery deep and spiritual lyrically. Steve Walsh was the original vocalist and phenomenal keyboardist.
Great song!! Dust in the Wind is a wonderful song by Kansas!!
I honestly don't understand reaching adulthood without hearing some of these truly iconic songs. Audiences were more self-segregated before my time, but things changed starting in the mid-70s with radio and just life. I knew the big songs from before my generation and outside of my preferred genres. We seem to be self-segregating again via Spotify playlists, etc.
My goodness what a beautiful reaction She is so profound and exact explaining this song man i'm blown away!!
The Live Version is Fire ! 🔥
I grew up listening to this so it kind of amazes me people haven't heard it. I was a kid when this song came out, I'm 56 now, black too. I do understand, at one point music wasn't so secular then moved back that way. Then again, I grew up in the Midwest so...
My youth was in the 60s-70s and I remember being struck by the depth of Carry On My Wayward Son, and later Dust In The Wind, songs that made me think about what I was going to do with my life and it helped me on my journey that has kept me close to God and family.
Dust In The Wind, also written by Kerry Livgren, essentially completes the spiritual journey, you absolutely must listen to it, even if you don't do a reaction video.
Fantastic interpretation of the lyrics. A lesser known song that did get some airplay back in the day is Hold On.
This was an excellent analysis. I'm not religious, so had never heard it this way, but this rings spot on for the time.
This song was about the ptsd vets that returned from Nam. It was for the movie Heroes about that subject
Im with Tasha. I love music that has meaning and this song speaks to me also. I love lyrics with depth. Kansas delivers. Message received. Its very biblical to me as well.
This was a song by the original members of the band. The singer here is Steve Walsh. He has one of the best rock voices of all time!!!!!
Tasha, you need to react to their songs, "Miracles Out of Nowhere" and "Dust In the Wind". "Kansas" is a phenomenal band!!
Ty ty ty someone finally dissects the lyrics and appreciates them
Tasha you are awesome you cracked me up you would also appreciate Dust in the wind by this band
Great song, great album, great band. Kansas definitely had their own thing going on.
YOUR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS ARE PRICELESSSSS TASHA!!! 😊 LOVE IT! 👍NOW WE'RE TALKING SOME OF THE VERYYYYYYY BEST IN PROG ROCK T AND TASHA : JETHRO TULL, RUSH, KANSAS, AND THERE'S OTHERS OF COURSE BUT!
I’ve seen Kansas more times than all other bands I’ve seen combined.
Same
Music back then had some complexity, which gives the listener something to think about, which is why some like jazz and classical.
not ronnie platt, but original member the phenominal steve walsh on lead vocals!
and if you loved this audio version, you NEED to check out the official video version - it will knock your socks off ❤
and yes, the changes are called transitions lol
Kansas are icons! This was back when it was just pure raw talent. No auto tune. If you like this check out Journey! Love your reactions!
Classic hit song 🎵.
RIP Robbie Steinhardt, 3 years ago.
Suggested video 📹: Kansass performs Play the Game Tonight live 🙌 with Steve Walsh on vocals.
LoL 😂Tasha’s face when T said, You Never Heard this Song?! 😂. This is one of the greatest songs though, great suggestion 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Saw Kansas live about 5×. The depths of lyric, richness of the arrangements, even to the 1st time of an electric violin, an altogether sublime experience!
just because you finished a journey doesn't mean that you are home. Just because you have cleared your bucket list doesn't mean that you are dead. I think that the song is about a continuation of struggle through the hardships even as you may doubt the struggle itself. There is no resting, just carrying on, come what may. I'm pretty sure that nobody died because it would be counter to the overall theme of the song to lay down and die. Just my opinion.
CONGRATS for listening to the studio version, which is better by far than whatever live version you could dig up. Now you need to follow it up with "Cheyenne Anthem," which is about the settlers war with the Cheyenne Indians in the 19th century. Same album as this song.
Kerry Livgren's guitar work is legendary.
1976!! Just turning 14. Greatest time for music. POINT OF NO RETURN, SONG FOR AMERICA, FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE and of course DUST IN THE WIND were Awesome Radio friendly songs. Miss Jackson say his music "Is Crap" but she will digest it anyway. Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
Awesome review! Great descriptions. Can you review the live version sometime soon? If you loved this, you'll really enjoy watching the things they can do live. They are so talented. Many thanks!
You have to check out "Dust in the Wind" ( with video ) by them, one of their very best.
Kansas was not really a Christian band… but some members were on a spiritual journey during their early years. Livgren himself says this.
Steve Walsh is a legendary vocalist… and Kansas is one of the best bands live.
A lot of Kansas songs are spiritual in nature
This happens to be the song they are known for, but their music is way way deeper then this tune, as great as this is. Check out a tune called "Song for America".
Master lyrics ❤️🔥🎸
……when you said “CRAP” I nearly fell off my chair ! 🤣😂🤣 well said, made my day ❤️ you go girl !
I've listened to this song thousands of times and I will listen to it a thousand more! 🙂 I love that you gave them church credits! And that lyrical reading at the end by Tasha - you should do some dramatic readings or slam poetry! 😊 But you were seriously disrespecting Tee throughout the video. Show your man some love, he introduced you to this amazing song! 🥰
I can't do live streams anymore because of my location... All woods, no Wi-Fi.
I sure am sorry I missed that one because those final notes were absolutely Joe Walsh!
Kansas is Mt all time favorite band from 1974 to the present. Kansas original line up from their debut album Kansas to Audio Visions is: Kerry Livgren-Guitars, Keyboards, and songwriter, Steve Walsh-Lead Vocals, Keyboards, Percussion, Robbie Steinhardt-Violin, Lead Vocals, Phil Ehart-Drums,Rich Williams-Guitars, and Dave Hope-Bass. Kerry Livgren received Christ in 1979 and in 1980 Audio Visions came out. Steve Walsh left after the Audio Visions album because he didn't want to sing Christian lyrics. In 1982 Vinyl Confessions came out with new lead singer John Elefante(great voice), guitars, keyboards, songwriter and he was a christian as well. After Vinyl Confessions Robbie Steinhardt left as well. Drastic Measures came out in 1983. After Drastic Measures, both Kerry Livgren and Dave Hope formed AD, a Christian rock band. Because I'm a Christian man I'm going to promote AD'S albums, all of which are phenomenal: Time Line, Art Of The State, Reconstructions, and Prime Mover. Their are only 2 original members left Phil Ehart and Rich Williams; Billy Grier their bass player has been with them since 1986 on the Power album, plus Steve Walsh came back, and Steve Morse on guitar. Ronnie Platt has been their lead vocalist on their 2 latest albums Prelude Implicit and Absence Of Presence (phenomenal albums.) I hope you react to more Kansas! Kansas all the way to Leftoverture are great progressive rock albums, but don't sleep on Monolith and Audio Visions. Carry On Wayward Son and Dust In The Wind are obvious places to start, but like the Boston debut, not a filler on Leftoverture. Point Of Know Return, Masque, Song For America, and the debut is great, too. Lonely Wind was their first single, Can I Tell You, The Pinnacle, and Journey From Mariabronn. Song For America, Incomudro-Hymn To The Atman, Icarus Borne On Wings Of Steel, Closet Chronicles, Lighting's Hand, Sparks Of The Tempest, Nobody's Home, Portrait He Knew, People Of The Southwind, Relentless, Hold On, Got To Rock On are from the first 5 albums! Thank you for reacting to Kansas, I hope to see and hear more.
It's hard to believe this song came out in 1976 and we're still jammin to it still today
Tasha is so gentle….😂
I still think of the black Chevy Impala and the 2 brothers.
This song and Long Time by Boston are two of the greatest “classic rock” songs of all time.
Tasha: Great analysis. If you think this was a deep song, then definitely listed to their song Dust in the Wind. A very different vibe but also deep-philosophical.
This song probably makes my top ten.
Try 'Magnum Opus' by Kansas
kansas were and have always been a religious band, at least the songs, that's why their song Dust in the Wind is the Boy Scout guitar player song, and is also in the Boy Scout songbook
If you can find it, try Gentle Giant with the song On Reflection. Really would like to know what you think of it. Keep up the good work, you're so inspiring and enthusiastic.
You should watch their Live performance of this.
The whole album is gold.
The road so far 👌
Oh yeah, Kansas was the real deal. Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂
Oh, what a cornerstone of classic rock . One suggestion; anything before 1990ish, you gotta do the video😎🤘 [Tasha, such a very thought provoking & insightful exposition!]
Thought I commented maybe it didn’t post anyways so glad you loved it!! You haven’t gotten to it yet in supernatural it’s the theme song in every season finale it plays during the previously on part! Wanted you to hear the song first so you can really appreciate it when you get to it! Ready for you to finish season 1 !
To be conflicted is not a sin. It's just life.
You gotta love it Tasha rocking out to a song older than her 😊 great song guys 😊
My daughter-in-law is from Kansas and loves them!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
When the musical content in a song completely changes now days it's called a breakdown. I don't think they called it that though in the 70's
once rock-and-roll gets into your soul - it never gets out !!
Yeah, man, this song if from a time back when bands made music using a thing called "instruments". What they would do is hold or sit down at the instrument and apply their hands or breath or feet, maybe with a pick or sticks, and operate the instruments to make sounds in melodies and harmonies.
There was ZERO programming or interfaces required.
Heh, heh, heh... I'm super old.
This is a great song, a sad one , peace when you are gone .
This sound can't transfer over to todays music. Music has changed so much.
High School Music was great in 1976.
Back when they toured this album for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks Colorado(God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way with roughly $1 a gallon for gas on bikes. Hell yeah.😎😎
I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it.
I still have this LP./Album.
"Point of Know Return" and "Dust in the Wind" are two other awesome songs from that era 45 years ago.
They're still played on classic rock radio.
"Surely Heaven waits for you"
😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇
I like watching reviewer's reaction as it keeps getting better.
Me too! 👍👍👍
YOU WILL LOVE "I LOVE YOU MORE THAN YOU'LL EVER KNOW" BY BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS...FIRE🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Should have done a live performance. If you do Dust In The Wind do the live version. ❤❤❤❤
live version is way better!
I'm surprised you picked this one and not the video below with the band performing it.
The story of Icarus but, apparently the story has changed. I learned that icarus wanted to fly to the heavens and the wax that held the feathers melted. John denver references icarus in the song Rocky mountain high. There are a couple of others but, I can't remember at this time.
Great reaction. Love listening to you guys!
You need to watch the live performance!! It's so much better.
very sweet analaysis
It's called movements.
Everyone that does reactions has reacted to this song off that album and they stop !! You guys need to check out The Wall and Miracles out of Nowhere ! they're even better than carry on my wayward son if that's possible !?
Definitely a jam and I think it’s their best
Very cool breakdown
"What's On My Mind" is fire. Give it a listen.
You have to react to the live version.
What's on my mind is awesome
Yes, this is a very spiritual song and it has a deeper impact other than just nodding your head to some constant beat. Many songs from past decades are like this hence why I can't listen to rap or hip hop because it feels too shallow to me. If you go back to the 1980's you'll hear a lot of European music that took over America for a while and was called "Disco" music, which has a constant beat to it and was meant for night life bar scenes which a lot of people in Europe were doing. I couldn't wait for Punk music to enter the music scene and wipe out Disco as a bad memory from my own past.
Fun reaction. Classic rock gem. Thanks
Ever listen to ALICE COOPER'S "BILLION DOLLAR BABIES" ???🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great! pick. Tasha🔥
Tasha!! Super song.
Hey Tee and Tasha it is a great song
Is this a PROUD PAPA and his Daughter?
Stryper does a cover of this
