Someone one asked my my favorite rap songs and I said "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" by Charlie Daniels, " A Boy Named Sue" by Johnny Cash, and "Wolf Creek Pass" by C.W. McCall.😁
"Johnny's" songs are very old Appalachian mountain folk songs: Fire on the mountain, run boys run, the devils in the house of the rising sun, chicken in the bread pan picking out dough, granny does your dog bite, no child no.
The internet is SO COOL! Here I am, a sixty year old gay white woman from Virginia, watching you, a funny, intelligent, entertaining young man, as YOU watch the Charlie Danial's Band sing a GREAT song from 1979! You probably can't appreciate this, growing up with the internet, but it just AMAZES me that the three of "us" can share a meaningful moment with each other. Thanks for a GREAT reaction. Your appreciation and enthusiasm are everything.
The genre might be Blue Grass, country, Appalachia folk, etc. It epitomizes the blended sound of mountain music, which takes its inspirations from Irish, Scottish, and American folk and blends them all to make… this.
You nailed it. It's all of what you said, mixed together in the story-telling tradition of all those genres. The story itself is a takeoff on the old folk tales of the Devil making a bet with someone and if that someone fails to win the bet then the Devil gets to take the loser's soul. It's also reminiscent of the self-penned tale of blues/ragtime guitarist, Robert Johnson, who went down to the "Crossroads" to make a deal with the Devil whereby the Devil promised to make Robert into the best blues guitar player around in exchange for Robert's soul. The deal was sealed, the Devil got Robert's soul and Robert walked off into the realm of legend. Robert wrote the song back in the 1930s. It's now a classic story brought into the public consciousness by several artists, including Eric Clapton, and was made into a great little movie starring Ralph Macchio (from the "Karate Kid" films) and featuring a burning hot guitar duel between the Macchio character and the Devil (played by the fabulous Steve Vai. That explosive, dynamic, iconic scene can be seen here: ua-cam.com/video/tXfZtlAPUNc/v-deo.html
I'm not even a big country fan, but Charlie Daniels is a legend. It's so refreshing to see young people, especially black folks, enjoying not only this, but rock and roll from the 60-80's.
"I done told you once, you sunnuva bitch, I'm the best there's been!" Man, everyone pops to that line. It's fantastic! Great reaction! Love your takes!
I remember on the radio, they had him saying, "...you sunnuva gun, I'm the best there's ever been!" They couldn't have "bitch" on the radio back then. lol
This is outlaw country! Your old honky tonk music played by guys who grew up with rock & roll. This song went to number on the country charts - and number THREE on the Billboard Hot 100! Legendary. RIP Charlie Daniels.
In the 60's and 70's nobody worried about "genre" on the regular radio stations you'd hear everything from hillbilly, country, rock, blues, soul, orchestra, jazz, it just all happened at the same time. That's why the music from that era is so awesome.
The Charlie Daniels Band was more in the gendre of *Southern Rock* than it was Country Music. The band was respected highly from both groups regardless.
This is basically an evolution of Celtic/Scots-Irish folk music from the Appalachian mountains (where the term "hillbilly" originated). It was hillbilly folk that became country eventually, which led to its mixing with the blues and r&b that spawned the original rocknroll music. This is Charlie takin it to the next level in the 70's (before hip hop, modern rock, and modern country). The Celtic boys brought the fiddle, banjo, and guitar in as an element of Americana/folk (and eventually Kentucky bluegrass) music in the 1800's, and it became iconic in the 1940's and 50's when dudes like Hank Williams brought it into the American mainstream during the first true wave of country music (called "hillbilly music" at the time). Loved your reaction, homie. Keep it up, this is gold.
"Jonny said 'devil just come on back if you ever want to try again I dun told you once, you son of a bitch, I'm the best hat's ever been''" has to one of the greatest lyrics of all time.
Charlie Daniels (RIP) was a legend. I remember when this came out. Charlie had to have a version suitable for radio play (it was the late 70s), so he said "son of a gun" instead of "son of a b----". We'd all listen closely to see if the radio station would play the sanitized version or the original. Of course we preferred the original!
@meganhutcheson5867 I don't know when Daniels became a born-again Christian, but I do know he was still using sob at the Farm Aid several years later, and I do remember the minor controversy of saying the b-word on the radio. Profanity hadn't quite been acceptable yet on TV or radio. Maybe a little, but absolutely nothing like today.
This came out in 1979, and was a huge crossover and is still played on both classic country and classic rock radio stations today. One of my favorite songs, great reaction. There is a follow up to this song, The Devil Returns to Georgia, with Charlie Daniels and Johnny Cash. This can be classified as either country or Southern Rock.
NEVER bet on the Devil, son, never bet on someone who lives on lies. He'll lose every time. Having said that, I LOVE this performance!!! Rest in Peace, Charlie Daniels.
Don't make a deal with God either. He'll grant you your prayer, but what you have to go through to get it will make you wonder if the destination is worth the journey.
I call it Hillbilly Rap. I love all the songs in all genres that tell a good story! The differences in the evil and good music styles can really be heard on the studio version. There was a clean version where he says "son of a gun". First time ever seeing you. Big thumbs up. New subscriber. Take care and keep up the good vibes!
@theresahenderson3534 back in the days of CDs, I bought a rock CD. It had a promo CD packaged on the back. Mozart. For a long time I never heard it. Theb I played it and loved it. You're gonna raise your eyebrows, but I had a multi CD player then, and I sandwiched Mozart in between Janis Joplin and Johnny Cash. I can't tell you how, but it worked!

LOVED YOUR REACTION!!!❤❤ I first heard this in the late 1970's when it came out and was an instant hit! I met Charlie, and he was just a true gentleman and absolutely LOVED HIS FANS AND LOVED TO PERFORM!! He would go offstage after the last set and wait until the crowd thought he was surely gone, then rush back out on stage and do a 45 minute set!! The crowd always went NUTS OVER THAT!! Charlie's violin teacher told his parents he had no talent, so he should quit...wonder where that dude's been hidin' out...(YIKES!!!😂) Sadly Charlie has been gone for a few years now. The piano player - SO TALENTED - Taz DiGregorio was his name, sadly passed away in a terrible car accident while he was on his way to meet the band early one morning to begin a long road tour. It was raining and slippery and he lost control of his car. That was at least 15 or more years ago. Charlie was a storyteller, and you will find that in his music. What a talent!! WHAT A SHOWMAN!! The band wrote all of their songs, and they started out in the sixties, I believe, playing anywhere they could, and living in a van.
I saw Charlie Daniels in concert in the early 80’s. Incredible performance! One of his early recordings (early 70’s) was a song called “Uneasy Rider”. It was hilarious and since it was spoken rather than sung, I called it Redneck Rap.
I saw him at the opry once. Saw Merle haggard in a little cotton eye joe bar in Cookeville sitting on a stool performing. One thing about it there's certain people whom it's a honor to see once live.
I love that you loved the song. Charlie Daniels is old school country/bluegrass. Also the fiddle has been associated with the devil ever since Paganini, the bad boy of classical.
4:31 Your reaction to that specific part tells me you really appreciated it. Many reactors enjoy the song but don’t recognize great moments like that one. Great reaction 👍🏻
That riff is SO DIFFICULT! It's not on the studio recording, which I knew by heart as an 8yo, so when I heard it on this video, I was blown away. It really shows Charlie's mastery of his instrument.
There's a sequel to this song, called "The Devil Came Back to Georgia". It features Johnny Cash as the narrator, Travis Tritt as the devil, Marty Stuart as Johnny, and a session musician named Mark O'Connor playing Johnny's fiddle part. O'Connor plays Charlie's fiddle solo, but plays three notes for every note Charlie played. It's pure fiddle fire!!
I grew up listening to The Charlie Daniels Band, and I was lucky enough to see him live many times. He was great every time. We called this genre of music "Southern Rock" along with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, ZZ Top, The Doobie Brothers and more. It was a great time. RIP Charlie.
I was watching a Korean TV series. The song they used was The Devil Went Down To Georgia in Korean. Didn't quite have the soul in it. So this song is known all over the world.
I think it's very cool to see a young person discover and enjoy music that I've been listening to and loving for over 40 years. This song came out when I was 10 or 11 years old and it was 20 years at least from the time I first heard it on radio until I heard the uncensored version without the 'son of a gun' line he did for radio and the first singles they put out in the stores. I still remember pedaling my bicycle to the local record store just to buy the single on 45. It's country but some also categorize it as southern rock. I never cared what slot it filled it was all just good music to me. The world lost a great man and fantastic story teller and musician in 2020.
Rock bands with a violin player: "Kansas", "Electric Light Orchestra" (aka "ELO"), and "Shooting Star". I recommend the songs "Dust in the Wind" by "Kansas", "Roll Over Beethoven" by "ELO", and "Flesh and Blood" by "Shooting Star".
The chorus verses are a combination of lines from two traditional bluegrass songs dating back to the 1800’s: 1. Fire on the Mountain (Run Boys Run): “Fire on the mountain, run boys run; Sal, let me chaw your rosin some Fire on the mountain, run, boys, run; Fire on the mountain till the day is done.” and 2. Chicken in the Bread Pan: “Chicken in the bread pan Picking out dough, "Granny, will your dog bite?" "No, child, no." "Granny, will your hen peck?" "No, child, no. Pappy cut her bill off A long time ago." The line about the Devil being in the House of the Rising Sun may have been a reference to the song of the same name. If so, it most likely is there to indicate that the Devil was about to be beaten. (The song references a brothel that was shut down in the 1800’s.)
Sir, I have to tell you that I thoroughly loved seeing you enjoy some of our Southern bred music. This is REAL country not that jive they play now. Bless you for showing your self in an honest way.
This song came out in 1979....same time frame as ...Rappers Delight....the dong considered the first "rap song". But....The Devil Went Down to Georgia .....has always been the .....First Rap Song to me! 💥❤💥❤💥
Ya know I’ve seen a whole lot of people react to this song but I gotta say I throughly enjoyed your reaction the most!! I was around when this song first debuted and your are spot on when you say this is a Hell of a performance! I enjoyed your vibe and your energy so much that I just subscribed. You were so authentic! Keep doing you! You are just great to watch
Hello - first time visitor to your channel and new subscriber. I loved your reaction to this barn-burnin', country-jammin' classic by the late great Charlie Daniels' band! It's great to me when I see people of different backgrounds enjoying music to them which might be new but they enjoy just the same. Keep it comin' and thanks for sharing! May God bless! 🙂
I remember when this song came out, I was 13 in 1979 and this song was huge even on rock radio stations at that time making it sort of a crossover as it doesn't really fit rock & roll and it doesn't really fit county either especially at that time. I enjoy how the story plays out. I want to pass this on for anyone who doesn't know this. I learned it in a trivia game years ago. When "Johnny" sings: "Fire on the Mountain" run boys, run The devil's in the House of the Rising Sun Chicken in a bread pan pickin' out dough Granny, does your dog bite? No, child, no I learned that each one of those 4 lines are the name of a different song. "Fire on the Mountain" run boys, run ... Is a song The devil's in the House of the Rising Sun ... Is a song Chicken in a bread pan pickin' out dough ...Is a song Granny, does your dog bite? No, child, no ... and this one is a song as well. I had no idea before that particular trivia game that he was singing about singing 4 different songs. Just a small nugget of info I want to pass along. Great song choice for a reaction.
It amazes me watching you young people listening, reacting and enjoying music from the past 6:14-when I first heard it on the radio back home, he said…”son of a gun”…
My grandfather played the fiddle and he played at country dances. He was a farmer. My mom moved us to Brooklyn NYC and it's a whole other world but we can great experiences good and bad from wherever we grow up.
Great reaction. One minor pet peeve. Reactors way too often ask/wonder what genre a song is. I guess it shouldn’t annoy me… we have genres for a reason. But many songs, especially now, cross and mix genres. Country music may do it the most, as most country artists have opted for more rock-style instrumentation. “Pure” country music almost doesn’t even exist anymore. That may sound like a complaint or an insult. It isn’t. At all. It’s a compliment. Music is art. It’s creativity. There should be no boundaries defined by genres. So, it’s a great thing that artists are mixing it up. If you must know, I think most would consider this country-rock, with the sub-genre of country being bluegrass, which may be why it doesn’t quite match your perception of what country music is. As an aside, someone criticized you for calling it a violin. It doesn’t matter. Violin… fiddle… they’re the same, we just use the different name depending on what type of music is being played. So, you weren’t really wrong. The only reason it’s important to know for this song is because he’s literally playing the music from the Devil and Johnny’s battle. They’re having a fiddle battle and he’s playing the fiddle. If you think he’s playing the violin you might miss that point.
I was lucky enough to see Charlie Daniels Band in concert. They put on an amazing performance 👵🏼💜☮️ Uneasy Rider and Long Haired Country Boy are a couple more really great songs from Charlie 😎
I’ve never heard of the Charles Daniel’s band. 😂😂 Buddy, I love your reaction. I guess I grew up with this music and I knew it was fire when I was a kid. I’m really glad you liked it. Wouldn’t mind sharing a campfire with your friends and mine!

this was around the time rap was starting and charlie did some rap in this song. AT the time rap wasn't it's own genre and different people were doing it. This was a big song that helped it get there and we all know about rappers delight. But, it is one of charlie daniels biggest songs ever. It's a legendary song in country and other genres of music because it was a mix of like 3 different genres and done really well.
Bluegrass country, i believe. The chorus is actually a map of the battle....ie... Fire on the mountain. Run,boys, run. The devils in the house of the rising sun....etc. are all names of Bluegrass songs that are standards of that music. Love your reactions btw.
That, dear Shon, is a FIDDLE! It's got STRANGS! (Not strings)! I saw him in concert - A-MAZ-ING! I can still sing along to every word all these decades later! Love that you're discovering the pure insane talent that existed back then! RIP Charlie (7.2020).
Being from the South, I can assure you Charlie is playing a fiddle.
Charlie was the best fiddle player. We miss you Charlie

There should be a Rap parody of this Jam! The Original Rap battle...4 your Soul!!!👹👿👺😈
Back in our days it was Called Country Rock
The musicality of this is incredible. So many minute details and it has to be perfect or it changes everything.
One of the best bands ever, this is my favorite of theirs!!
It’s southern rock my friend! Loved your reaction . Thank you!!
The chorus verses are a combination of lines from two traditional bluegrass songs dating back to the 1800’s:
1. Fire on the Mountain (Run Boys Run):
“Fire on the mountain, run boys run;
Sal, let me chaw your rosin some
Fire on the mountain, run, boys, run;
Fire on the mountain till the day is done.”
and
2. Chicken in the Bread Pan:
“Chicken in the bread pan
Picking out dough,
"Granny, will your dog bite?"
"No, child, no."
"Granny, will your hen peck?"
"No, child, no.
Pappy cut her bill off
A long time ago."
The line about the Devil being in the House of the Rising Sun may have been a reference to the song of the same name.
A fiddle has "strags" a violin has stringgs😂
This song came out in 1979....same time frame as ...Rappers Delight....the dong considered the first "rap song". But....The Devil Went Down to Georgia .....has always been the .....First Rap Song to me! 💥❤💥❤💥
Loving your reactions!!! Keep it up😊
Thank you! Will do!
I’m pretty sure I’ve commented here before but being able to see Charlie perform this live IN SOUTH GEORGIA about 10-20 years before he died was epic
Charley Daniels- hells yeah!😂 ❤now thats cool country 🎵 all'ya'all. Great reaction 😁.
I saw Charlie Daniels a few times back in the day! Always a lot of fun!
When "Johnny" sings:
"Fire on the Mountain" run boys, run
The devil's in the House of the Rising Sun
Chicken in a bread pan pickin' out dough
Granny, does your dog bite? No, child, no
I learned that each one of those 4 lines are the name of a different song.
"Fire on the Mountain" run boys, run ... Is a song
The devil's in the House of the Rising Sun ... Is a song
Chicken in a bread pan pickin' out dough ...Is a song
Granny, does your dog bite? No, child, no ... and this one is a song as well.
I had no idea before that particular trivia game that he was singing about singing 4 different songs.
Just a small nugget of info I want to pass along.
Great song choice for a reaction.
Loved your reaction. The genre is southern rock.
Seen Charlie open for Alabama in 1988. He was so drunk he stomped a hole in the stage. He did not miss a note through the entire performance.
Charlie Daniels was the best when it comes to music rest in peace charlie Daniels
There is a follow up to this called THE DEVIL GOES BACK TO GEORGIA. Has an all star cast great video
It amazes me watching you young people listening, reacting and enjoying music from the past
6:14-when I first heard it on the radio back home, he said…”son of a gun”…
Telling the Devil he's an S.o.B, brilliant. 😁
It's a great tune, it really is.
I've loved that song for over 40 years
My grandfather played the fiddle and he played at country dances. He was a farmer. My mom moved us to Brooklyn NYC and it's a whole other world but we can great experiences good and bad from wherever we grow up.
When we heard this 1st time around, it was called "country crossover" or "southern rock". Thanks for your reaction.
The Devil came down & he is still putting out great jams here where southern rock was created {Allman Brothers} GO DAWGS & PEACE LOVE n HIPPYNESS ✌💖☮
The style is called Bluegrass my friend . R.I.P Charlie he is a legend that's a very old song made me happy to hear it again
Charlie Daniel's sing kinda Country Southern Rock. Do his Long Hair Country Boy or Saigon.
Loving Charlie Daniels and your enthusiasm. Very much enjoyed your reaction Shon! Subscribing now! Missing you Charlie! See you at the house.
The best music always tells a story. Especially one People can understand.
I was lucky enough to see Charlie Daniels Band in concert. They put on an amazing performance 👵🏼💜☮️
Uneasy Rider and Long Haired Country Boy are a couple more really great songs from Charlie 😎
I’ve never heard of the Charles Daniel’s band. 😂😂
Buddy, I love your reaction.
I guess I grew up with this music and I knew it was fire when I was a kid.
I’m really glad you liked it.

It's a classic song that has inspired a number of funny parodies like "The Devil went to Jamaica" and "The Devil went up to Boston".
Merry Christmas 🎅 another great reaction! Yup its 420 Playlist
I love watching you! So much passion. Keep them coming!
County music is a mixture of Gospel Jazz blues bluegrass pop and anything else you need ❤❤ it's 🔥🔥🔥
Charlie was simply the best! Rip CD
this was around the time rap was starting and charlie did some rap in this song. AT the time rap wasn't it's own genre and different people were doing it. This was a big song that helped it get there and we all know about rappers delight. But, it is one of charlie daniels biggest songs ever. It's a legendary song in country and other genres of music because it was a mix of like 3 different genres and done really well.
When they came out they were southern rock. Another awesome song by them is the legend of Wooley swamp
It's called BLUEGRASS 😀 Glad you liked it !
Bluegrass country, i believe.
The chorus is actually a map of the battle....ie... Fire on the mountain. Run,boys, run. The devils in the house of the rising sun....etc. are all names of Bluegrass songs that are standards of that music.
Love your reactions btw.
That is a fiddle not a violin.....there's a difference a violin has strings and a fiddle has strangs
Really enjoyed your reaction, thank you for sharing.
