Oh yeah, I saw Charlie Daniels at the Willie Nelson annual Fourth of July picnic in the Texas Hill country. I think it was 80? Amazing Waylon Jennings Willie Nelson Jerry Jeff Walker Leon Russell you name it they were there it was incredible.
Charlie Daniels is a hero of mine. He was a true American patriot and Christian. His songs "Still in Saigon" and "In America" reflect his passion for veterans, especially those who went to Viet Nam. One of best friends had an 8-track tape of CDB and we would "steal" his father's pick-up to drive around and listen to it, we were only 14-15. For a great listen, try his "The South's Going to Do It Again". One of my biggest regrets is not learning to play fiddle when I had a chance to in my youth. Godspeed, Mr. Charlie.
Charlie Daniels was a great musician, and I heard he was one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet! Another great violinist was Robby Steinhardt from Kansas. You can really hear his prowess on a song from their first album called Bringing It Back.
My nephew who I introduced to this song when he was just leaning the violin in grade school , said the hard part of learning the song was the bowing not the finger placement on the violin's neck . ( I should mention he was good enough to be part of Young Peoples Orchestra's in High school and he's played at both Carnegie Hall & Lincoln center in that capacity so I'd say he knows enough to know what he's talking about 🙂 ) I have seen the CDB some 40 years ago at a Summer Show on The Pier ( The Pier adjacent to The Intrepid Aircraft Carrier / museum in NYC ) was a Big Summertime Concert Venue in the 80's . That was pretty much around the peak of the CDB's career and I recall it being a fun show . Some other great story songs by Charlie are "Easy Rider" , "The Legend of Wooley Swamp" and "Long Haired Country Boy" . Also Charlie also does a great job with the Country Fiddlin' Jamming classic "Orange Blossom Special" 🙂
There's a sequel to this, from the Mark O'Connor ablum 'Heroes'. "The Devil Comes Back To Georgia", with Mark and Charlie on the fiddles, Johnny Cash doing the main stoyrtelling, Travis Tritt as the Devil, and Marty Stuart as Johnny for their lines. It's epic.

You should give a listen to Doug Kershaw a Louisiana bayou fiddle player. He burns up those bows to the point he keeps a barrel full of them beside him.
In '79 my wife and I were house hunting in Utica. We wanted to stay another night but we're informed that The Charlie Daniel's Band would be occupying that room. With no rooms available, we were forced to leave early...& without seeing the concert! lol
This venue, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center commonly referred to as SPAC is where I've seen almost 99% of the concerts in my life. I wasn't at this particular concert, but I did see Charlie Daniels in an even better venue. I saw him at the Colosseum Theater in Latham New York, about 20 minutes south of Saratoga Springs. The Colosseum doesn't exist anymore but it was a wonderful place to watch a concert. It was very small, only holding a few hundred people and it was circular with a central rotating stage. I was fortunate enough to sit in the very front row with my parents and my best friend, all of which are passed from this world now, about 25 years ago. So I saw Charlie Daniels Band perform this song along with all of their other great hits from probably a distance of 10 ft on a floor level rotating stage. There's not many concert venues that can beat Saratoga Performing Arts Center, but this was one of them. And to have the privilege of watching Charlie Daniels and his band so up close and personal with my favorite people in the world is something I will cherish to my end of days.
"CDB" Growing up in the 70s was the greatest!! I'm from northern Maine, nothing but woods, lakes, streams, brooks, ponds, rivers, and more woods!! We all listened to rock and roll, but we also listened to country and western. There wasn't a weekend keg party that went by, and I'm serious about these huge keggers that took place almost every weekend from '77 to '82, that you'd hear a good number of Charlie Daniel's songs. Being a small town meant everybody knew everybody else's business. Caribou, Maine had @ 10,000 people living in the area during the 70s. We had a grand total of 2 police cars serving and protecting the folks living and working in Caribou. Although, relatively small in population, our sports teams used to dominate the entire state in all high school sports teams. That's what a strict way of life and a well known work ethic amongst the people gets you! "Long Haired Country Boy", was hands down a crowd favorite. I remember when "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" first hit the charts on May 21st in the year I graduated high school, 1979!! Last of the 70s! And we treated that year like it was the last year of life! We were ridiculous when we think back, but boy, did we have fun that summer. Of course, we're all the better for it now.
Cool reaction. I met Charlie in 2015. Very nice, humble guy. Saw him live 3 times. All of them were Volunteer Jam shows.. though the first time was just him and the Marshall Tucker band and maybe one other act. You should check out the song Reflections. It's a tribute to Elvis, Janis Joplin and Ronnie Van Zant from Skynyrd. Charlie and Ronnie were good friends, and you can hear Charlie get choked up when he sings the verse about Ronnie in live performances. It's pretty moving, especially if you're a Skynyrd fan.
I saw them at the New York state fair shortly after this album came out. Great show. One dude in the crowd was pretty well hammered and kept yelling devil went down to Georgia after every song prior to them singing this one.
My late husband played pedal steel guitar with a NC band called Matt Boswell & the Hillbilly Blues Band. They had an amazing fiddle player JD (John Hopkins) that would absolutely shred this song! It’s kinda like the song that bands play to give the fiddle player his moment in the spotlight! Kinda like how ‘Look at Us’ for the pedal steel guitar player or ‘Wipeout’ for the drummer🙂
Around 1995, Daniels wrote a sequel to this to record with champion fiddler Mark O'Connor for an album called "Heroes" where O'Connor did collaborations with many of his fellow fiddlers in styles from Indian to classical. The sequel is called ""The Devil Comes Back to Georgia" and also features vocals by Johnny Cash, Travis Tritt and Marty Stuart.
i used to listen to this song on an 8 track player when i was little and ive loved Charlie for years. i finally got to see him in concert a couple years before he died and he was still as bad ass has he was back then! I still have that same 8 track player and 8 track by the way and it still works Lol

Wow!! What a lineup!! 🔥🔥
You should give a listen to Doug Kershaw a Louisiana bayou fiddle player. He burns up those bows to the point he keeps a barrel full of them beside him.
Seen him twice! What incredible shows!!
Let’s Goooo! That’s amazing! Thanks for sharing! 😄
Gran does your dog bite no child no is my fav lyric!!!
You need to listen to more. Great song writer
In '79 my wife and I were house hunting in Utica. We wanted to stay another night but we're informed that The Charlie Daniel's Band would be occupying that room. With no rooms available, we were forced to leave early...& without seeing the concert! lol
Oh wow! 🤣
Saw him live and he was awesome! I play guitar, bass, banjo. I attempted the fiddle.... so hard. On a scale of 1-10, fiddle is a 47.
😂😂
That’s what I hear!
Love this song.
Such a great tune! 😄
The deference between a violin and a fiddle is that a violin uses strings, and a fiddle uses strangs.
Ha nice!
Haha 🤣
Yes he is great
This venue, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center commonly referred to as SPAC is where I've seen almost 99% of the concerts in my life.
Love Charlie! Saw him 3 times in concert, one of those time when I was stationed in Iraq in 2005.
Wow!! So awesome and thanks so much for your service! 🙏🏻
I saw them at the New York state fair shortly after this album came out. Great show. One dude in the crowd was pretty well hammered and kept yelling devil went down to Georgia after every song prior to them singing this one.
Haha 😂 Their is one in every crowd!
Saw them several times, met Charlie a few times too. Great live band!
That’s so awesome! 😄
Oh wow!! That’s super cool! 😎
It's hard to believe you never listened to country, you sound country AF 😊
Haha 😂 I know. I know. It’s true though!
My dad played the fiddle and yes i saw im in person
So awesome! Appreciate you sharing! 😁
OMG, super happy you are reacting to this one. Enjoy
It was a blast!! Love this performance! 🔥
i used to listen to this song on an 8 track player when i was little and ive loved Charlie for years. i finally got to see him in concert a couple years before he died and he was still as bad ass has he was back then! I still have that same 8 track player and 8 track by the way and it still works Lol
I saw Charlie Daniel Band several times in Louisville Kentucky. This song always bought the house down.
I saw him on the uso tour 88. And again in 94
That’s awesome!! I bet it was a blast!
