He did when he was younger but not in his later years. He spoke about getting older and becoming a Christian and how it changed him. He changed the lyrics in several songs to omit it when he sang in concert. In Long Haired Country Boy he change the lyrics from I get stoned in the morning and get drunk in the afternoon to I get up in the morning and I'll lay down in the afternoon
Back when this song came out the term dope had come more to mean heroin, not so much weed. All you gotta do is listen to "Long Haired Redneck" to know he's cool with the green 🤘
I grew up with 7 sisters and 5 brothers. My dad was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars and as tough as they come. He raised us boys to be men. Respectful, kind and giving men. We all worked at a young age and always helped each other, our neighbors and our community. And we protected the vulnerable and indefensible. From the old lady at church that would fill her purse with cookies from coffee hour to the poor kid down the block from being bullied. We looked after our own and that taught us to stand up for ourselves even if you knew you were going to lose, you stood your ground. What he's saying basically is 3 foot. There's a three foot space around me you don't cross unless invited and if you do what you're planning to do, you'll draw back on a stump and will regret it. Yes, I might lose this one but you ain't getting out of this without feeling the harsh consequence I'll be delivering you and with any hope, you'll stop doing what you're doing. I once knew a kid that would tease and provoke dogs that were chained up. It only took one time when a dog broke the chain and caught him and he never did it again. Bring your lawless, undisciplined, uncaring, self centered, egotistical, prideful and badass self to my door and find out what1 that'll get ya, is what this song is about. Like, Try That In A Small Town or A Country Boy Will Survive. Most everyone in my small town was white but that didn't matter. The Black, Asian and Latino kids had just as many friends as we all did and race was never an issue. You were judge by the content of your character no one escaped being corrected when they had it coming. BTW, Loving your channel. My good find for today. LOL
This came out in 1989 (35 yrs ago) when things were staring to be brought to light that there is a degradation of the society that we all held dear... mainly due to political maneuvers by politicians wanting to remain in power rather than serve the people. Charlie always tells it like it is. RIP to a great guy (he passed in 2020). Great reaction and I'm glad you've "found your way".
This was made in the early ‘80’s. And while I don’t think “weed” dealing is a hanging offense, but I think the fentanyl, crack, and meth dealers are. Especially the politicians that let the stuff come into the country unabated.
I'm pretty sure Charlie was talking about the hard stuff that takes people's life he has smoked a little in his life if you haven't hear the song pusher by steppin wolf it's a good one on the same line
I lived down the road from Mr. Daniels. The last time I saw him perform was at a friends funeral a few years ago. He sang "How Great Thou Art," just him and his guitar. It was one of the best performances I've ever seen. RIP Mr. Daniels.
My dad was around the same age as Charlie Daniels and came from a similar background. When he used the term "dope," he was referring to all kinds of "hard drugs." It’s simply an older expression from that era.
This song was quite popular then. My favorite song by Charlie was "Still in Saigon." It is my favorite Vietnam War soldier song, relating much of the conflict in the jungle, in the US, and in the soldier.
"Every summer when it rains, I smell the jungle, I hear the planes. I can't tell no one I feel ashamed. Afraid someday I'll go insane.".......one of my favorite songs.
@@PapaPhilip the vast majority of dealers are just users trying to pay black market markup. And they're not selling to your kids. Drug prohibition is malum en se law, and idiots like Charlie Daniels are the precursors to the modern identity politics divisions of today. Maybe he should have sang about vigilante justice against a govt fleecing it's tax base.
The line "watch where you're going but remember where you've been" says a lot about what you're saying. People make mistakes. Don't forget those. Learn from them. And pay attention to where you're headed. What path you're taking now
I saw Charlie at the Opry less than a year before he passed. He opened with Simple Man then played Devil Went Down to Georgia. He absolutely brought the house down.
I saw him play a benefit for Charlotte NC fire fighters because his brother was a firefighter in charlotte. He wore out a bow halfway through devil went down and had a stage hand hand him a new one without missing a beat. He let the horse hair fly.
Love these first time reactions to what the kids call "Dad Rock". Every time you do these, it takes me back a little and reminds me of Pops. Thanks fam!
I grew up to this stuff. We used to call this Outlaw Rock. Came home on leave after Basic Training and AIT, caught up with the old crew. CDB was the last live concert I ever attended. 1981 wasn't too bad...
Just discovered your channel with this reaction. Am a new subscriber now! I’m a grandma from Mississippi- don’t let satan rob you from Gods grace by hanging onto guilt from things in your past. We all have it. But release that and don’t look back! Loved your reaction.
Omg! Loved your reaction to this song by The Charlie Daniels Band. Check out his song The Legend of Wolly Swamp!! Thanks for your reactions! God Bless!!
Your next reaction to him should show his humorous side. Please check out his song Uneasy Rider 88. There are two songs of his with this name, Uneasy Rider which was released in the 70's and Uneasy Rider 88 which was released in 1988. Great reaction, keep them coming!
Charlie Daniels was an amazing man as well as a musician. He loved his wife and family more than anything until he met Jesus. Then he became close to the man he wanted to be. You should check out some of the music on his blues album too. I met Charlie several times and he was always real and genuine. He is the best fiddle player in the world and probably the best banjo player.
Charlie Daniels was a party guy and smoked weed. He's talking about the hard stuff. You also have to realize how much violent crime is directly or indirectly due to gangs running the drug trade.
About 10 yrs ago, we moved into a cabin up in the mountains of Southwest Colorado, about 15 mins West of Durango, CO. As the crow flies, Charlie Daniels had a house about a mile away. It was a nice, but simple place, on 3 acres in a very low key, off the beaten path location. STUNNING location. Jaw dropping, actually. There weren't many people who lived in the canyon, but we were told that he would go down to the very little church in Hesperus and play his fiddle on Sundays to the congregation. I am sad I never made it to church there to see for myself. The folks there are ranchers and simple and decent. Charlie would have fit in magnificently.
CDB decade of hits album is full of great stories some fun ,some political all from a perspective of the working man or those with a rebellious spirit ! RiP Charlie

As a 30 year old white male who grew up on gangsta rap like Big L, Tupac, biggie, M.O.P, wu tang all the classic shit I have found a new love for music and it’s old country and outlaw country
Charlie enjoyed a bit of the green leaf, from what we understand, but hated the hard drugs that destroyed lives! The song "Long Haired Country Boy", tells a good story. Another GREAT..."The Legend of Wooly Swamp". True country icon! Charlie Daniels, a true patriot

Charlie was talking about hard dope, he was known to partake in a bit of the good green...
That's because dope originally referred to opium and its derivatives like heroin and this song was released at the height of the heroin epidemic.
He did when he was younger but not in his later years. He spoke about getting older and becoming a Christian and how it changed him. He changed the lyrics in several songs to omit it when he sang in concert. @@bigrig4177that's not even the lryics to the song. I saw him shortly before he died and he sung it like he wrote it.
The Bible says no man is good, but as we humans would judge a man, Charlie was a good man. RIP Charlie Daniels. God rest your soul.
Another great story telling song by Charlie Daniels is The Legend of the Wooley Swamp. Worth a react to
To this day, tho, I still sing "Booger Woods" instead of Booker. And then laugh my 50 year old ass off, because I'm still 12 in some respects.
Love that
Remember Hank's Kawliga? :)
One of my all time favorites.
Charlie was a great American patriot, and I would have been proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with him. We need more men like Charlie.
Longhaired Country Boy is one of the best songs from Charlie Daniel’s Band IMO

Charlie Daniels was a good guy and a great artist. He also suffered from alcoholism/drug addiction. Was 20 some years clean when he passed.
Why'd he call for himself to be lynched then? 😂
Nothing simple about state pharmacological control. Or lynchings.

I think Uneasy Rider is funnier than Uneasy Rider 88, but the newer one might be easier to get the humor. (Could be that I'm just getting old. ;)
Charles Dickens; "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times". Really prophetic and that is from more than a hundred years ago.
Charlie would love that his lyrics carry on and make an impact

"Long Haired Country Boy" and "Uneasy Rider". Two of his fun songs with fun references to the "herb". You're welcome.
