Naofumi isn't necessarily a non-gamer. The four heros all come from different worlds, and Naofumi's world didn't have a game that was like this world specifically.
And we see that he was an avid gamer. He just also spent his time reading.
I honestly wish we just had a little bit more backstory on what exactly the situation was where he saved his brother. Because that's why his parents basically gave him ultimate approved NEET status - if he wasn't summoned, he would have gone through life never needing to get a job. Especially in the Japanese context of careers, that's a massive thing. He must have saved his life or something.
@@joshuafogg6600 In th LN Naofumi has a younger brother who was the top student, like diet/scientist level top. Then the younger brother started slipping [hanging out with the wrong crowd, ditching school, etc.], Naofumi stepped in and set his younger brother right [but also converting him into otaku like Naofumi], so Naofumi's parents approved his NEET status. Unfortunately we don't get more than that.

@@joshuafogg6600 I have only watched the anime but there it's pretty obviously stated that he's not a Neet though. He's a university student, sure he can live at home for free so he doesn't have to get a job but he still has an education.
Speaking of education we know that Motoyasu, Ren and Itsuki were summoned to melromarc moments after their deaths but in Naofumis case he was still alive and healthy when he was summoned. So the real question is How would Naofumis classmates and teachers react to his sudden disappearance?

@@exerty1 you do when the criminal can't even pronounce your name correctly to beg for forgiveness. Before Bitch doing that, he might've not demanded the death. In fact, Ren and Itsuki didn't found the death penalty was unreasonable and queen would've accepted it if it not for their status as king and princess. That's literally what saved Queen to protect her family. Heck she even forced to get this result instead leaving all to Naofumi to save them because what she did was the most sensible thing, especially when she was the most sadistic in the court room at that time.

After all, they didn't kill him either. I mean, they kind of tried to, but if we're just going with the false framing, death isn't that reasonable.
I've noticed over the life of the series, that Naofumi becomes the Hero that the others want to be. Motoyasu (Spear Hero) wants a gaggle of girls to fawn over him. Naofumi has a nearly all female team who sincerely love him and fight for him. Itsuki (Bow Hero) wants to be seen as the "Just Passing Through" Hero, and Naofumi becomes that because he has to clean up the messes the other Heroes made. As a result, the villagers eventually come to trust him. Ren (Sword Hero) wants a team that can take care of themselves (since he is a loner and doesn't want to be held back by them) but he loses them because he never took time out to actually train them. Naofumi, out of necessity, has to train his party, and he takes pride in looking after them. They grow and become strong enough to protect themselves even when he isn't around.
The guy who was lost everything ends up gaining everything and then some.
While the other heroes have been the things they accused Naofumi of being. He was called a creep and rapist and a cheat even though motosuyes is a creep and a pervert the only reason he wanted to save Filo and Rapthtile because they were good looking girls. He was called weak but Ren and the others are all power and no skill and refused to gain strength. He was called a brainwasher and slave driver but Itsuki used a brain washing bow and his slave are actually better off with him. He was called a cheater but the other heroes have cheated many times
I can see why he have the shield in the first place. The Shield represent protection to all
A man who has no honor...yeah about that...he treats almost everyone he meets with respect. The threatening people bit was also out of context, what with him only threatening the guy to get treated fairly.
Plus the game logic vs actual logic, that was the explanation, but we see time and again that the other heroes are also just morons. If they really were just going with the everyone is NPCs bit, they would treat people differently than they do. They make bonds with people, give others respect, etc. So I'd argue that instead you see that its less everyone is an NPC to them and more that they're sort of socially inept jackoffs with giant egos about their expert gamer/hero status. Spear hero even sort of admits to that point eventually.
LupineShadowOmega eh I've been the shunned in a few games all hate you and shun you then they see that you aren't what you were branded and slowly are re-accepted if we didn't have msm we'd see a very similar world IRL. You can have no Honor in societal standing, be hated by leaders and still be a true Knight of the people/Ronin.
@@blindedjourneyman that isn't usually what someone means when they say that someone has no honor. Being a societal outcast tends to be different. And the only thing close would be the idea of a Ronin, but even with this being anime we aren't seeing tons of Japanese cultural influences here.

1) to be fair, to the world at large at that point they DO see the shield hero as lacking honour, so that statement could just refelct how he is seen up to that point
2) the heroes DO see the world via game logic, assuming that the quests they take work perfectly as they would in a game, thinking they just finish the quest and go and don't ened to follow up on it or help the townpeople (and I'd say they regard msot people as NPCs, they just don't show that view for everyone, or at least if they do it comes in different degrees). They think they can get by just by relying on their mainstay game tactics (mostly via spamming srong moves) and of course they also think tey're functionally immortal for no damn reason.
@@sarafontanini7051 Except 2.) Isn't just because of game logic. They've gotten it explained to them several times now and not just by Naofumi whom you could say they disregard.
Even now the Sword Hero still thinks that someone took his reward for the dragon, despite him getting papers sent to him about it. When they met in the tavern Naofumi even mentions that he should have gotten the paperwork.
By comparison, the Bow Hero got told about the refugees, got defensive until Naofumi pointed out to him that "Yeah man, surprise you have political power and shouldn't have even needed to turn to physical violence" and the two of them came to an understanding though Bow hero is kind of arrogant/dismissive about things.
Still he wasn't a guy that didn't grasp what was going on. Instead he got rebuffed for inflexible thinking, was embarrassed, and then turned to being haughty as a defense. He understood though, but Sword Hero still doesn't and likewise neither does Spear. So again, I point out they're also kind of morons
Like I said going in. Game logic is a bit of it sure and maybe that was the author's intent alone, but again and again we are exposed to them just not being that smart as well.
Correction: the 3 stooges (Spear, Bow, Sword) only had the knowledge of SINGLE PLAYER RPG. They don't know how MMORPG work.

Not true. Spear specifical comes from MMO RPG and while the status is less certain on sword implication was that his VR game also was a MMO. Only one who can be said to have played regular offline RPG can be said bow.

If I remember right asian MMO's have less focus on traditional tanks and it was noted that shield class in spears game atleast was way underpowered or one semi popular explanation he was PvP player (more focus on dps there usually) that did not touch raiding at all.

This wasn't brought up very much in the anime, but Naofumi is a gamer. He has played online games, but not one that was modeled after this world. He was also the type to play the merchant or be a guild master. It's Itsuki who doesn't know the common etiquettes of online gaming, having played a console game in which everyone he interacted with is are NPCs. He thinks even less of other people then Ren or Moyotasu.
I also don't see how whether or not he is a gamer has anything with being set up. None of the heroes had any idea about the lore of this world or this country. They didn't know they were being played. They certainly didn't know the cute red head is a sadistic sociopath princess who wants the world to burn. Even if Naofumi played a video game version of this world it wouldn't have changed the fact that he was summoned to a country that teaches their children that he is the devil. I'm not even sure if the adventures from the first episode were even aware he hadn't played some video game of them. I'm not even sure how word of that spread without someone hating the shield leaking it to the public.
The anime also made a major change to Naofumi's character. In any other version when Myne begged him for her left he called for her execution. I actually disliked how they handled the queen in the anime. That offering her life up to spare her husband and first born made no sense and is a departure from an otherwise rather shrewd.
I did enjoy watching Myne struggle in the guillotine. I just wish they could of done it without coming at the expense of the queen's character.
Narutonarutonaruto85 I’m so glad someone spoke up! I loved seeing the red head bitch in the guillotine but at the expense of The queens character and Naofumi wrath....I rather keep those two. And besides we still have 3 more attempts the kill the bitch anyway.

Narutonarutonaruto85 they didn’t sacrifice the queen but showed she was conflicted between her duty as queen and her love of family. She made the queens duty choice of execution for the royal traitors which is the right royal call, but she still loved and cared for her family separately to her queenly duties thus she came up with the her life for theirs idea. It is the conflicted choices that leave us not quite satisfied but are more realistic which is why some are not happy with how something’s when down in the anime as we watch anime to escape those kind for issues or have em happily resolved in a way that ignores real world hard choices.
@@joeklu3434 I feel they sacrificed part of her character for this. In other versions she gave Naofumi the illusion of choice and aside from a short outburst never seem to break down. Even then she commanded fear.
Narutonarutonaruto85 Narutonarutonaruto85 ahh ok haven’t seen too much about the queen from LN but it seems they went out of their way in the anime to make the characters realer. But at the same time I think folks forget that most of the main cast of characters are broken/damaged. Though most folks watching aren’t used to seeing characters that have this type of design and it can feel off if ya aren’t aware that these characters are much more fleshed out than we have or will see. I think the queen seems weaker in the anime because she has full faith and trust in nafomi and allowed more of her real self to him, but then again I could be wrong.

Naofumi in the first half of Shield Hero was a breath of fresh air. While his arc makes sense, I find his character in the second half of the season far less compelling .. I'm not saying the anime is bad, or saying he isn't a "true hero" but in my opinion, the arc would have benefited greatly from being truer to the source material.
Yes Naofumi is a hero and can be merciful tsudere but he is vengeanful in the light novel the striping of name and titles instead of execution was appeasement and compromise from the Queen to Naofumi. Naofumi accepted it's because while he wanted the princess and the King executed accept this deal because it would be sweeter revenge, he didn't want to start a civil war and got off on it. In humiliating his enemies it's a show of force communicating those who would do the Shield hero wrong. One must ask the Qustion if a king and princess can suffer this amount of humiliation and punishment what kind of punishment and vengeance can the Shild Hero inflicted upon you.
Yep. The young adult wrath really was visible. Can't say I blame him in either version of the story. It just feels smoother the way the situation was toned down. Sort of wish we could've had an inner monologue though, the queen comes off as cold blooded cause her thoughts weren't shared properly.
@@blindedjourneyman Yeah, they definitely made Anime Naofumi a bit more Heroic and less vindictive, but let's be real here, the LN version acts like he's 12 and not 20 a lot of the time, so I think the softer/more mature Anime version is (usually) justified.
Darkkfated yes I can agree that he acts a bit inmature but they wanted him dead themselves I be a lot slower and more tactical but I could see him not wanting to kill them it’s just I don’t think the anime really puts that in the best way
He actually very vindictive and asshole like. He is shown to act less like a hero and more of a villain than anything. I'm just glad malty got to kill that cunt of a mother hers.
Wait how would their deaths start a civil war? I mean their religion basically got destroyed and I thought having two members of the royal family die would cause the kingdom to collapse on itself. War was the last thing on my mind when this happened.
He didn’t work with the other heroes at all. The filolial queen made him. And if it wasn’t for the pope basically saying he’s the bad guy and not the shield hero naofumi never would have been able to clear his name

They keep trying to make him one. I liked him better when he was an anti hero who fought dirty. So much more interesting of a character in the manga and the novel.
The theme there is that a hero is not defined by good intentions. But by the fact that the world is a better place with them in it.
While Naofumi, Moyotasu, and Ren are net gamers, Itsuki is not. He has no idea of online etiquette, having only interacted with NPCs. While this was likely cut for time, when they went to Cal Mira he went around kill steeling, despite being told not to. He even chased other people out of a large area, claiming it as his hunting ground while there were already people trying to avoid interfering with each other.
*Season 2 Spoilers*
This even gets worst in how he treats people. He treats one of his party members as his slave, forcing her to ignore her magic skills and have her focus on melee skills to be a vanguard fighter. When that doesn't work out he calls her weak. Once she proves herself useful and even earning the queen's praise in a battle he did not he kicks her out of the party. His party members frame her for breaking something and despite knowing it's a lie still treats her like she broke it and is lying about it. This pushes her into depression and soon attempting suicide by throwing herself into the ocean.

Naofumi in Episode 23 after reading the "How to Level Up during Double XP Weekend" pamphlet he's given. and I quote: "What is this, a guide to MMO etiquette?" (7:15 time stamp for Ep. 23)

Don’t forget the metaphor inherent to the very idea of the Shield.
Naofumi’s role isn’t to defeat the enemy. Nor is it to save himself. The Shield’s purpose is to protect the people behind him by placing himself in harm’s way.
Which makes it messed up when he is demonized by a religion. And in a way, it could be said that the Shield Hero was the shield of the people who protected them from a large power that is willing to use them as fodder. Just look at uow the cardinal treated his worshippers, told his second in command to let them die so "they could become martyrs", when he could just have told them to stop once they were very low on mana

And he's being treated this way because the previous Shield screwed up big time, king mentioned that in passing. Its not simply because he has a shield instead of an actual weapon.
It's ironic that Naofumi is the most powerful out of the 4 cardinal heroes

Shield hero is definitely one of my favorite anime that I’ve ever seen. Such a great show
Naofumi has done things only a hero would do, I can’t disagree with that. However I cannot agree with the way he let Myne and the king off with just a humiliating name change. Myne attempted assassination on the next in line for the throne and both she and king were “guilty of high treason and conspiracy” and did not lend aid to the citizens of the realm during the waves. On top of all this, Myne lied her ass off all the way through the trial. It was not mercy to let either of these people, who are guilty of some of the most serious crimes one can perform, go free. It was sheer stupidity. Now they’re free to start scheming again. In the next episode, in fact, Myne is shown poisoning a pie served at the cardinal heroes’ meeting. These two people, at the very least, belong in prison for life. As retribution for their actions and for the safety of those around them, they cannot be allowed to do as they please. Letting them go was in no way a good act. What do you all think?
If it's any consolation that's not how it happened in the manga, Naofumi demanded they get the death penalty and the queen said he can humiliate them instead, then they made a big deal about him being merciful at a public ceremony to make him look good, the queen was worried about how executing the king would affect international relations and so this was how she saved face, I agree that how they did it in the anime was stupid, it was uncharacteristic of Naofumi to be merciful to people who had wronged him so severely and the queen being grateful to him for forgiving her family made the queen look weak, whereas in the manga the ceremony and mercy was all planned out in advance which makes the queen look devious

I'm not sure if it was urs or not but there was a particular comment that talked about how he grew into being a hero that someone posted about 2 weeks ago that really got me thinking.

Looking back on this, it's really interesting to see how Naofumi develops because of the people he gets to meet. After being wronged and such, it's hard to be able to trust someone again. But over time, he finds what his character arc really needs
When you really think about it how can a person new the differences between hero or villan I'm not defending the spear,sword or bow heros I'm just saying I think hero is someone's own definition of hero when you really think about it

The shield was always a tool to protect and not attack, naofumi followed it's ideals well and is just an honestly likeable hero
One of my favorite parts of the anime is the final battle against the pope where the 3 heroes fall into traditional anime tropes and then Naufumi (probably spelled that wrong-correct me in the comments) goes and does his own thing, then berates the others for their mistakes before agreeing to fight with them.

the great thing about Naofumi is that he not only is like the perfect representation of what being a hero means but also he represents the "Shield" perfectly. Think about it, the purpose of the shield is to protect those who are behind it, whether it is one person or an army, the shield goes in front of others and receives everything that it's thrown to it for the sake of protecting and saving lives. A shield definitely can be used to attack others, but its main purpose is to exist for the sake of others, to endure the attacks of the enemy until its broken and it can no longer accomplish its purpose... Naofumi is like that, he can (and is willing) to receive the attacks and hate of others, but he keeps moving forward and pushing, to protect those at his side and behind him, sometimes even the ones who didn't deserve it, the reason, his main purpose as a hero is to save others, to protect the world, and even though he was practically forced to do it, he's willing to accomplish his purpose, his duty, the best way he can and to protect those who need him. If I'm not wrong, If I remember correctly, in the light novels is pointed out that the shield has always been the most caring and kind of all the 4 capital heroes, the reason was that the shield hero usually is not someone who sees humans and demi-humans or the likes as different, for the shield hero each live matters not worrying about race, gender, or believes, which is also why the shield hero is considered the hero of the demi-humans and why they adore him so much, because the shield hero is not the shield of the humans, but the shield of the world and anyone who needs him, and I think that it's a beautiful concept.

To me a hero is a person we could look up to, or someone we aspire to be like. Someone who inspires hope to people and uses his power for the sake of others instead of using it only for himself. Anyone who has power and only uses it for their own gain and for fame are false idols!
OK gonna stop you before you get him wrong. They changed this from the light novel and manga of him sparing Bitchi and Trash. Which make both Naofumi and the Queen's charater all the more weaker for it.

Well i have read the light novels and spoiler alert. And i must say, my respect for naofumi is gradually getting eroded. When he was in his worse days being branded as a criminal all the way to the fight against the pope, he used to be a better person. But after his vindication especially volume 11 to 14, he has been nothing but a petty person, doing unhero like acts and let's just say, he has been getting cocky and full of himself and also a hypocrite. Honestly, i am disappointed in his current character development in the 11th-14th volume novels. Maybe when he has to suffer a lose or be defeated in battle, he will get back to his senses and his right behavior. In one of the novel spoiler alert, his obssession fetish with raphtalia wearing a particular dress and ordering her to wear almost got her killed. And later, when raphtalia was reminding him that it was his fault, he didn't want to admit his mistake. Really disappointed.

naofumi sees everything via a p.e.e method. motoyasu and the other two are all about stating and defining the point while ren for some unknown reasons ren analyses his situation when he somewhat believes in naofumi's case and start working. naofumi sees beyond these two. he sees the obvious points, analyses it and thinks of a way that will deal with it without any bad repercussions. for example, when he names trash and bitch, he makes sure that it will not only punish them but also able to prevent the queen's suicide. this way, he could destroy the real culprits while being fully aware of what her death could do, as she wants to offer hers in their stead. even if he spares them in exchange for the queen's life, her death will be used by both myne and the king to punish and condemn him and his friends even more. even if he manages to have them killed after the queen's death, he will be seen as a megalomaniacal tyrant to everyone else's eyes, including the young princess who is still young for being the queen. in other words, the execution will only satisfy his needs while everyone gets the bad side, which is the same as the other three heroes.

Letting them get Executed was have been letting them off easy, by sparing them, and renaming them, he's not really showing them Mercy, cause now, they have to live with every one knowing what they did, as every one saw the trial, and they will now have to suffer as he did because of it.
This is not Mercy. This is TRUE Vengeance.
The only one shown any Mercy there was the Queen, cause despite everything, she did not actually want to see them die.
