- Glass from The Rising of the Shield Hero just cemented her place as the anime's first OP character... but how? Today we explore Shield Hero's newest threat, Glass. Ironically enough, Glass is actually not a villain and true antagonist to Naofumi, Raphtalia and Filo, but rather a test to heroes. We explore the origins of the Fan Hero, vassal weapons, as well as discuss how Glass serves as a gatekeeper and foil to notions of power in the universe of Rising of the Shield Hero.

However, seven star / vassal weapons holders are chosen by the weapon it self; thus they don't have the same restrictions.

What people constantly forget about shields is that they are weapons in themselves. Some shields have spikes mounted on them or are so large they function like giant boxing gloves to knock someone off balance and set them up for a killing blow. A shield might not be considered a killing weapon, but it is a tactician's weapon by providing them the ability to study their enemy and find a weakness. It also increases their chances of survival and an enemy you can't kill easily is a gigantic threat. In this regard, Naofumi is a difficult to kill tactician who waits for the right opportunity to strike and coordinates his teammates so they can be at their strongest. That said, the Shield Hero is the most valuable hero out of the four.

Shield has lot of importance in history. even in modern day setting; It’s still important.
It’s just the other 3 heroes still believe they’re playing a game. in those games; the shield was worthless to invest. Which says a lot about their skills.
While watching Gladiator for the first time, my miltary obsessed cousin explained to me, if you had to choose between a sword or a shield. Go for the shield, that way you can survive long enough to obtain a sword.
Every weapon has their strong points (Er… no pun intended.) and sheilds ar no different. As we clearly have seen from the duel with the Spear Hero. The Sheild Hero won the moment that his spear failed to pierce his sheild. Most people have No Idea how "Savage" that statement was. It's kind of similar to……… bleh… SAO when he told the bandits that they could never defeat him because his healing factor was leagues above their ability to hurt him. Same concept.
Snowmon89 literally upgrading the shield means you will tank more overall, meaning you’ll get more damage in over time. If you were forced to use a shield as a weapon, you can bash a persons skull and or if it has a sharp end, literally just stab them. The only time I would think to use a sword instead of a shield is if you are not only faster and can damage the other. A shield can disarm you, while a sword can)t disarm a shield. A spear is even worse and you literally have to make sure you’re not surrounded as you can only poke things and swing it. Naofumi’s Shield of rage that sets fire surrounds the enemy, and Motoyasu is far weaker then Naofumi. Ren has been given the sword, and the sword can’t beat the shield because he can’t actually damage Naofumi. Itsuki can’t damage Naofumi because the arrow just bounces off Naofumi. Bitch would immediately get sent to Iron Maiden, and Itsuki would also prolly lose because of Iron Maiden. Motoyasu may or may not lose to Iron Maiden, and Ren would immediately get too close to use Iron Maiden. Ren by far would have the best chance against Naofumi.
It's the third wave of calamity. They completely missed the first wave as none of them had been summoned yet, sot it's only the second one they had to deal with. Raphtalia was the only one of them that I know of who faced all three waves, and in the first one she was only acting as a civilian.
Also I think Naofumi's lack of knowledge of any of the video games the others played it a benefit as he has to figure out how things work rather then assuming unreliable information is accurate. This is evident by the three other heroes each trying a different way of summoning the boss and refusing to try any other way until Naofumi shows up and exposes it. Most likely the three of them did this event before, but it was different in each of their versions.

While them not being able to figure out how to clear an event because they refused to try something new when what they had been trying wasn't working was a major issue, it was hardly isolated issue. There have been other issues as well. For example Ren treated this like a game and fought the dragon, causing the deaths of his whole party. He didn't even have a good reason for fighting the dragon. Then he left it's body out to rot. Motoyasu unleashed a seed on a village without giving any thought to why it was sealed away in the first place. Itsuki keeps taking quests without thought to the fallout, even killing a king and letting the rebels pick up the pieces, without checking if they could even do that without making things worse.
I also don't think they've put any thought into the economy of the world. They expect to just get paid large amounts without thinking about where that money comes from. In games vendors will buy as many rat livers as you can gather, without seemingly any use for them. Here at lest those orange balloons are made into balls.
There is also a help menu and I don't think the others have been using it.
Even if the games they've played were based on this world there would have to be some differences. The developers would have changed any number of things. For example the racism and slavery were more then likely toned down if not outright removed. Motoyasu tried to free Raphtalia without bothering to ask if she wanted to be free or consider the possibility he might get her killed the moment he takes away Naofumi's protection. I didn't read the light novel, but it's my understanding that Raphtalia wanted to fight in his stead in the duel. Given that Naofumi can't attack and it's her life on the line that makes sense she would want to do so.
I have to assume there are other changes as well. Things get added or patched all the time in games. Monsters and attacks that might have been too strong could be weakened or removed. They might tried to balance the classes, but didn't do a good job and left one of them too weak. In the first episode Motoyasu was quick to call the shield a loser weapon because he doesn't understand the value of a tank. He seems like a mediocre player who relies on level and equipment rather then strategy and team work. He might not even be developing enough skills, sticking with a couple of attack skills without balancing the others out. He could be using the same skills that worked well for him in the game without trying to figure out how they changed. The same goes for the others.
They might not even care that much about the people who they are suppose to protect. While the waves are going on more and more monsters spawn in and don't despawn just because it's over. Instead they start wandering around until they find someone to attack. After the first wave they stated there were more monsters in certain areas and people had to abandon them for now. Granted they can't be everywhere, but they don't seem to go on kill quests without being paid for it or for level grinding.
Meanwhile Naofumi has been killing large numbers of random monsters even if he can't use their parts for little pay. He also seems to be developing his shields and figuring out which ones will be most useful.
@@Narutonarutonaruto85 what im trying to say is it is not an advantage to not have any knowledge because while naofumi is just running around killing monsters they already have a good idea of how to level up fast which is more of an advantage thaan not knowing anything.
@@aidan-6635 When you learn something for the first time, even if it's wrong, that can easily stick with you and it can be hard to learn things work a different way.
Their experience in the video games was a short cut when they got started, but now they are past that. They likely keep making the same mistakes over and over again. They clearly still have it set in their heads this is a video game and are acting accordingly. They likely pass over certain skills because they were weak or useless in the game, but could save lives in this world.
Honestly everything that could be carried over by the game likely could be explained to them by the party members or the help menu. The only reason Naofumi got such a late start is because Myne intentionally sabotage him.
Naofumi seems to be making the most of his skills. Everyone else seems to be getting stuff handed to them and they haven't really learned to use them.

Who knows maybe in the future he'll get an option to go to another world be the shield hero of that world rather than be treated like shit in his world as bad as it is I think he'd even if he was given the option stay on his world because of his friends and the people that he needs to save going into the future I haven't read that much further into the novel but I'm almost certain without giving any spoilers that if he were to be given the option he would stay especially if they only allowed one person to transit through
I agree. They should've stand with the Demi-human cause, destory the royal monarchy and church of the three hero. In doing so they being peace to the world and relationships between humans and Demi-humans

@@kingnamor7777 Church, yeah, but the royal monarchy isn't that bad. They are actually very decent rulers, and the only reason King hates Naofumi is because previous Shield Hero was a bad person who used Demi-humans fanaticism to wage war and commit crimes against humans and King himself.

the whole reason why both glass, l'arc and therese (this is gonna include spoilers up to vol 8 of the light novel btw) invaded and attacked naofumis world was because naofumis and glass' world is fusing and they heard a legend that when they finish fusing both worlds would get destroyed. So they hitchhiked with the waves into naofumis world to kill him and the other heroes so the waves would destroy the world before they could finnish fusing thus saving her own. But as kizuna said it was just a legend after all, the worlds would fuse but neither would be destroyed. Kyo was just there to fuck things up with the spirit tortoise because he felt like it and both the vassal scythe and fan was screaming for the death of kyo because controlling the spirit tortoise was strictly forbidden (or any protective beast for that matter) but since it ended up getting revealed that glass and l'arc blindly followed a false legend they became good friend with naofumis party especially now that raphtalia is the katana hero.

In Raphtalia's world the Vassal weapons are called the Seven Star Weapons, though technically they are the Eight Star Weapons. They are as follows:

Seven Star Projectile/Throwing
Seven Star Whip
Seven Star Staff
Eight Star Carriage
Because the Carriage is in the hands of the Filolial Queen Fitoria it is not in circulation with humanity and has thus been forgotten.
Glass's world has these weapons:

Vassal of the Scythe
Vassal of the Ship
Vassal of the Katana
Vassal of the Book
Vassal of the Mirror
Vassal of the Instrument
Vassal of the Harpoon
Oh and something to note Glass is around level 80-90, however she only has that when in Raphtalia's world during a wave connecting to her world. If she were to remain in Raphtalia's world her level would drop to 1 and her equipment would lose their stats/effects. If she leveled up in Raphtalia's world then a wave connecting to her world would give her access to the sum total of her levels in both worlds.
Wait, that means if naofumi and his party enter through a gate to a different world, level up there again and come back to the first world their levels would be added?? Holy crap, basically level in every world connecting to lv40 xD
@@crostyla51 It is only in effect so long as the wave is connecting to that specific world. Otherwise they are at the normal level for the world they are on.

Ost, the human version of the spirit turtle and the 3 other legendary beasts are used to help prevent the worlds destruction, then some dumbass thought it’d be a good idea to take over.
It’s possible for regular people to cross the dimensions without a Vassal Weapon during the Waves...it usually means something horrible has happened though.
That’s why the Demi-Humans are discriminated; they arrived in that world with the Waves. While they obviously aren’t responsible for the Waves...the people still associated them with destruction. And there were some genuinely nasty Demi-humans who did cruel things to regular humans.

Um, Glass isn't there to 'test' the heroes. She wants a fair fight because of her character, but she wants to kill all the heroes. Killing all of them will ensure the destruction of the world and buy time for Glass' world, or so she thinks.
Glass is basically a giant glass cannon. She is not actually very OP. In the beginning she is strong, because her health pool, mana and abilities are all tied to the same stat, namely 'SP or Soul Points'. Naofumi's soul eater shield is super deadly to her later on because the more SP it drains the weaker all her abilities get. So she starts off super strong in a fight but unless she can recover her SP she becomes more and more useless. Naofumi has super defense even if his mana is at 0, but if Glass' SP is at 0, she has 0 defense. By their second meeting Naofumi is basically equal to Glass in terms of power and then totally outclasses her in the fight in the Giant Tortoise. The most OP characters in Glass' world are probably Kizuna and Kyo, plus L'Arc is way more useful against Naofumi specifically than Glass is because of his ability to bypass Naofumi's defense or use it against him.
Glass wears the kimono because it has good stats. In Naofumi's world armour basically is decent defensively, but in Glass' world a lot of what you would think would be weak armour is actually pretty good. Naofumi even has Raphtalia wear a kimono because of the stats (and because it looks good) and is super bummed out when the stats disappear when they cross back into Naofumi's world.
I don't understand people saying she's OP. She beat Naofumi because she was massively over leveled compared to him. The anime might not cover this, but by the end of the second half of shield hero (volume 5), Naofumi, Raphtalia and Filo fight Therese, L'Arc and Glass. L'Arc and Glass are both heroes and Therese is an uber powerful spellcaster and at that point Naofumi is only at like level 75. They still manage to hold out even with pretty much all the odds against them. If L'Arc hadn't been there Glass and Therese would definitely have lost. If Glass was by herself she would have been completely destroyed.
It's not that Glass is OP, it's that Naofumi is just not strong enough at this point in the series. His major boost comes after he gets access to Melromarc's hourglass, which like doubles his Filo and Raphtalia's stats or more, stacked on top of his buffs to their stats because of Naofumi's trainer buffs. Then Naofumi gets his own buffs by stacking all kinds of techniques to buff his base stats as high as possible.
By Volume 5 all the other main heroes get rendered helpless by L'Arc by himself, while Naofumi and his party are only seriously pressured when going up against L'Arc, Therese and Glass working together, while Naofumi is being subject to attacks which bypass his defense rating.
Glass is pretty much a balanced, high level hero and not even super high at that.

No. No. No. Her fans are NOT Seven Star weapons. Seven Star weapons are what Seven known vassal weapons of the world Naofumi ended up in (there are actually 8 of them) are called. Glass' world has its own 4 legendary and 8 vassal weapons, and she holds one of these 8.
Please dont spread misinformation. Also, you make it sound like Raphtalia comes from Glass' world, wich isnt true ether. Her parents escaped from a very secluded village of beastmen. She is a tanuki girl, not a raccoon girl. Her race is special. While its not as special as Byakko, who get an extra 20 levels before reaching the level cap, tanuki people have a talant for illusion magic and higher stats then most beastmen or humans. Even in appearance tanuki people and raccoon people are different. Tanuki people look more like humans, while raccoon people looke more like animals (furries basically).

The tanooki does seem to fit the description more. It doesn't help that the dub actually did call her a racoon, instead of a tanooki.

They look more like furries, while tanuki people like Raphtalia and her parents look more like humans with animal parts. Naofumi learn about Raphtalias heritige about halfway into the story.
Actually beastmen are the ones that are more animalistic in appearance than demi-humans.

A few errors with this im going to post spoilers from the LN dont read if you want the surprise.
glass isnt a 7 star hero, she is from another world and holds one of those worlds vassal weapons (only vassal weapon holders can cross between worlds).
She isn't trying to test the heros to see who is worthy (only to see who the real heros are), she is trying to kill the holy heros of other worlds which will "save" her world from the waves.
This becomes apparent in the next wave when shield boi stands against glass and 2 more vassal weapon holders with the complete intent to kill him. They have to drag glass away (the time limit) because shield boi has improved so much if she cant kill him now they never will.

That is what make sense cuz when they said that she want to test them, then why the heck she even try to attack/kill naofumi even when he running away if she only want to 'test' his strengh.

man i'm so excited. at first i was only watching the anime and I thought this was going to be your tipical 12 episode anime so I started reading the manga. got so hooked into it that I read it all the way to the lastest chapters. then I found out that the anime is going to be longer that 12 caps and that THEYRE GONNA COVER THE ISLAND PART OF THE MANGAAAAA!!!! AAAAAHHH thats's sooo cool, those battles are nuts, and with the animation the series have it will be epic

Naofumi makes up for the difference in level with stats. He unlocks all sorts of shield types and maxes their mastery to get the bonus stats. The other 3 goofs on the other hand only absorbs the best materials from the boss drops and other recognized powerful weapons, which explains why they are using the same skills (meteor slash/arrow/pierce, lightning slash/arrow/pierce). So despite being high leveled, they are actually average stat-wise and one-trick ponies. Aside from gaining the stat bonuses from the shields, he also understands how to use specific shields in specific situations because he grinded up their masteries. Although we only see him favor a few shields, but thats because those are the shields that either grants the best defense or resistance in that situation. Offscreen, he is actually grinding up the masteries of the other shields he unlocks from absorbing all sorts of materials from world loots or monster corpses.

The way I see it, Naofumi amassed skills and power that didn't come from level ups while the 3 baboons grind for levels and didn't bother seeking skills outside of what the level ups gives them.
Those three are stuck with "It's a game" mentality that they didn't bother with "quests" and focus more on grinding. Naofumi, seeing the world as a living, breathing world, partake in those "side quests" and get involved with the world around him that he gained those bonus skills and stats. Y'know like how games back then had skills you have to obtain and grind individually while games nowadays give you skills and stats on level up.
The three baboons relied too much on what they already know from the game they played they missed out on the bonuses that weren't included in the game, and Naofumi swept up all the bonuses by trying everything because he knows he knew nothing about the "game" the baboons yelped about.
I didn't really put it ogether until you said it but yeah Level doesn't seem to equate if your stronger. I guess the world is more based on EV training rather than grinding levels.

Another reason for the variation of power in respect to the levels between naofumi and the three other heroes is the status bonus. Noafumi unlocks a huge amount of shields that gives them status bonus vs the others that only level grind. Naofumi has better core stats because of that.

I like it when a story as character act as an objective challenge to the cast and who they are. Like Truth said, Glass acts as a wake up call to the other heroes (which they almost completely ignore) and stresses the differences between them and Naofumi. Really reminds me of Kimbly from FMA Brotherhood.
As for Ren, I kinda feel bad for him. He definitely shows growth and is willing to at least hear Naofumi out from time to time (he might take it worth a fat grain of salt since he still thinks the Shield is criminal). Considering that him thinking of the world as a game from his home is his only real source of reference for everything around him, it makes sense that he'd be reluctant to give up that idea. I know Ren has plenty of his own problems, but he is by far the only hero who is redeemable in my opinion.

Also agree. Ren’s also the youngest, IIRC. He’s only 16, and isn’t exactly the savviest person around. It makes sense that he’d be difficult at times.
Still, he has the potential to be a hero inside him. He got summoned when he died in Japan taking an injury to save his friend.
Not only is glass, from a race how functions differently than humans and monsters, but she's also from a world were also all people fight the waves for all kinds of reasons.
That added to the fact that time goes way faster in glasses world makes every hero from her world someone to be reckoned with ( as long as they attack during the waves or their levels aren't reset.) (Their levels do take into account their level on their homeworld + that of the level they have while attacking) ( not that glass levels like most people. shes from a weird race.)....

I actually hate the my hero academia jokes because Naofumi eventually gets a territory where he raises children into soldiers he wants to use to fight the waves. Two of those slaves even beat Siltvelts top warriors and now I can't help but view the rising of the shield hero and my hero academia in this way

I started to read the manga after the anime or episode that was uploaded due to the fact when I was watching domestic girlfriend they excluded so much , and I kind of read on so I knew what was gunna happen in the episode

small spoilers but in the manga since i read ahead,
alright here we go but anyway further in the manga naofumi meets the scythe hero (i forgot the other hero but she has magic bracelets) they're friends of glass and fellow heroes in another world. this world is opened through the waves themselves which is like some sort of portal limbo world in between so that's where they're from. at one point naofumi ends up actually besting glass before she gets weakened enough to where her companions have to spill dozens of sp potions on her, which made he able to move at incredible speeds.
in a nutshell, naofumi does end up being able to best her with the soul eater shield

If that is the case, then that could mean that a potential solution to the conflict between the two world's survival could find a solution relating to this movement between worlds. The first wave happened before any of the 4 heroes we know were summoned, so I wonder just what is causing this need to defeat the heroes/waves in order to save the world? This brings up the "saving the world is not the same as saving the people" thing brought up by Fitoria.

Glass seems quite interesting to me, and I am an anime-only scrub so if this speculation has been dispelled in the manga sorry. To start with, it seems like she was holding back quite significantly when dealing with the heroes and their parties. She can one shot a raid boss yet as far as we know she didn't kill anyone else on the boat, even when filo was wide open and sent flying, she didn't die. I suspect that was more intentional than Filo having a bonus to defense or something. She could also cut through Raphtalias' sword, but didn't even cut Raphtalias' skin.
I also found it quite surprising when she said "we will win the waves". I thought the waves were some kind of autonomous disaster from the first wave. Sure there were monsters but they were either mindless undead or simple beasts, even the boss of that wave was a beast of sorts, even if a strong one. So she has revealed that there is an intelligence/being behind the waves (which does explain the boat now that I think about it). Does this entity even exist in the same world? Does Raphtalias world have reciprocal catastrophes in their world if this is a war of sorts?
As for her role, I think it was her choice to turn up in the wave, and while she's a gatekeeper I think she's also trying to encourage the heroes to grow. She starts with an overwhelming flourish of power, a power that was near inconceivable to the heroes at the time. She calls attention to how the shield hero has developed more successfully than the other heroes. She holds back with her attacks against the others (I'm guessing she either didn't hold back as much or at all against Naofumi) and she keeps pushing Naofumi to his limits, hoping to see whatever "ace up his sleeve" he has left. Also, don't forget she didn't make an entrance until the first soul eater died, when you'd think in terms of raw tactics the more successful strategy would be to fight alongside the soul eaters. Even if the soul eaters were nothing more than cannon fodder, it is an advantage she openly shunned to talk and taunt the heroes.
Then there's the question of the timer. By the time Glass appeared the wave had been going on for hours, so I doubt it was a time limit of the wave itself. It also didn't appear as soon as Glass appeared, it appeared after the Iron maiden failed to kill Glass. It also said across Naofumis screen "failed" right before the timer appeared. Not sure if the "failed" remark related to the Iron maiden being destroyed, resulting in the skill to "fail" causing the message, or if it was related to some hidden criteria failing in the fight with Glass, or even if it just considers the wave a failure, meaning that technically Naofumi lost.
I would guess that since Glass has mentioned something about being associated with another faction, this faction is going to require the 4 heroes help with some catastrophe but requires all the heroes to be significantly stronger than they are, and probably significantly stronger than they would be if they followed their current strategies. Alternatively Glass must follow this faction but personally wants help to escape or otherwise betray them, and needs them to become stronger. Alternatively alternatively she gets some benefit from killing the heroes proportional to what they have achieved, and in their current state they just aren't worth killing to her/not interesting enough.
