"It felt only natural to us that an adaptation of Tolkien's work would reflect what the world actually looks like." - Lindsey Weber, E.P. Amazon's LOTR Series, Vanity Fair (Feb. 2022) .
Peter Jackson, interview GreenCine (Dec. 2002) - "There are certainly themes Tolkien felt were important. We made a promise to ourselves at the beginning of the process that we weren't going to put any of our own politics, our own messages or our own themes into these movies. What we were trying to do was to analyse what was important to Tolkien and to try to honour that. In a way, were trying to make these films for him, not for ourselves."

I don't understand how it feels natural to adapt a story but change it into a different story first. You aren't adapting anything if that's how you're going about it.
Why don't they throw in some mass slashings that lead to sword control policy too since we're just randomly throwing in current politics??

If you try and make a story reflect today’s world, it will go out of date at some point. Conversely, the Jackson LotR trilogy looks timeless.

Another part I remember from the filming of two towers is when they wanted to put Arwyn (Yes I know it's spelled wrong) in the siege of helms deep when she was supposed to be in rivendell. There was a huge backlash from people working on the set and fans who found out about it. So they removed her from helms deep and kept her and rivendell. And they said that you don't have to put a sword in her hand to make her strong. There are other ways to be strong and support from afar.

    Yes. We. Can.
The studio has full control over what they produce and how they market it. Trailers aren’t stitched together by AI. The writers know what they’ve done with the first episode or first film. To give an example of them not understanding their source material take the infamous “the past is dead” line. That line is given by Elendil. Elendil is the leader of the Faithful faction of Numenoreans. The faithful factions goals are to maintain the traditional way of life for the Numenoreans, close ties to the Lords of the West and elves. They are grateful for the gifts the Valar gave their ancestors. Therefore the past is incredibly important to Elendil’s faction and should by extension be important to Elendil himself. Now also consider that the opposing faction, King’s Men, seek to change the way of life of Numenoreans, abandon tradition. Now Elendil’s speech of the past being meaningless and the importance of moving on without sounds like a propaganda speech for the King’s Men.

WoT books have so many characters, plots and sub plots that one of the biggest problem with adapting the books for TV is deciding who/what you should keep, who/what you can combine, and who/what you can cut entirely. There's so much source material you don't need to make anything up, yet they made up a lot of stuff that not only has no basis whatsoever in the stories, but frequently contradicts the very foundational rules of that world.

"You have not seen what I have seen." - That kind of repetition is a tactic to signal that you're not engaging in an argument. It's the "broken record" technique that they taught us to use against peer pressure (to do drugs etc.) when I was in high school. Or, it's a signal that says "quiet down, I know what I'm doing." I recall the sheriff in _Twin Peaks:_ "I can get you a good rate at the Great Northern."
Galadriel's expression makes it clear: like the knights said in their previous video, the show is portraying Elrond as a mansplainer, and Galadriel, beyond the powerful and majestic lady, is now also the longsuffering woman who has to put up with men's presumption and incompetence. It's written all over her face. This trope of longsuffering competent woman dealing with men's nonsense is older than you might think: watch _National Velvet_ and observe how the old married couple interact.
Does Ar-Pharazon have six fingers on his right hand? He looks like he should. This show might actually be redeemed if they got Mark Knopfler to give it a proto-dungeon synth soundtrack.
Tolkien invented fantasy! And they treated him like garbage! And that's what they are: the Lords of Garbage. So bow down to them if you want! Bow down to the Lords of filth, the Lords of putrescence. Boo! Boo! Boooooo!

Sums up with the fact that whatever that's being made isn't trying to be true to the original source material. Peter Jackson didn't make a COMPLETELY accurate trilogy of films with LOTR but at least he tried his best and succeeded for the most part. Even then I agree that JRR Tolkien probably wouldn't have loved it due to the slightest of inaccuracies. ROP is just... all over the place, with stuff like Hobbits (even though they shouldn't have existed during this point in time) being set up for references.
Edit: Oh my goodness, ISILDUR'S SUPPOSED TO BE HERE?! I don't think he's supposed to be alive when Sauron was in the process of forging the Rings. Sauron is supposed to corrupt the Nine Kings into Nazgul first, right? That took years, maybe even decades, with how long it took for the Kings to turn. And these Kings are presumably from all over Middle Earth since there's Khamul the Easterling as one of the Nine. Unless it's a time skip, but that would go into when Sauron finally has the One Ring and waged his war against the Free Peoples of Middle Earth.

Numenor had already established it's colonies (Gondor and Arnor) in Middle-Earth when Sauron first started the work of forging the Ring, his original goal for the 19 slave rings was to corrupt all the elf leaders, but that failed. He had distributed all or almost all as Annatar, prior to surrendering to Ar-Pharazon. After a decade or 2 he convinced Ar-Pharazon to attack Valinor, this destroyed Numenor, with Elendil and Isildur escaping by disobeying Ar-Pharazon's orders. It's shortly after Numeonor's destruction that Sauron's intent with the rings is made obvious, and the Last Alliance is formed in a last ditch effort to stop him

So once upon a time there was a great creator who composed this whole world and populated it with amazing creatures but one of the lesser creators who joined in building the world had their own idea of how it should be and corrupted parts of it, casting that world to chaos. All woke SJW sequels, prequels, or reboots turned out to be soulless husks of the past glory. Top Gun Maverick proved that many are getting tired of "the message" getting burned into the entertainment industry.

GoT was generally good as long as they followed original story. And then they decided that they are better storytellers than Martin and they screwed up.

"The past is dead. We will either move forward or we will die with it." That line is given to Elendil, the leader of the Faithful. However, there is some hope that he is talking to Isildur, and the Past he is referring to is Numenor, now corrupted by the King's Men / Sauron and hence the old, good Numenor of the Faithful is dead. And moving forward means preparing to emigrate to the Middle-earth rather than die with the corrupted Numenor when it is judged. That would actually work.
Now, if it were Elendil saying that Isildur needs to stop honoring the Valar and be friends with the Elves, and get on the program to be a King's Man, that... that would be a travesty. Given what they have done to the other characters' personalities, I cannot discount this option, either.

    • @charlesstanford1310

Elrond took part in the War of Wrath, the vision of which is most likely the infamous Cheetos Battle Shot. That is, not only the dialogue is ultraretarded by the sheer idiocy of Elrond trying to patronise his future mother-in-law and generally a much older elf, but between the two it's Elrond who saw half of the continent go under the waves, not Galadriel.
Bad, hostlie parody would be *mockery*. Just like in the famous quote - the shadow that spawned them cannot create [...] it can only MOCK. The Amazon series can only be described as deliberate mockery of Tolkien's work.
The joke about authors spinning in their graves has a darker layer. Amazon did not start working in earnest on the show until Christopher Tolkien died. The quote about dying with the past ties into that, as well as premiere day (anniversary of The Professor's death, while September also has the double birthday of Bilbo and Frodo). They are literally and figuratively trying to kill and bury JRRT as a monumental cultural influence in the world.

That is a good point, how can you do something better with people that have less talent. Tolkien wrote a series of books. Amazon would really have to start there and be successful, for this series to have a chance. But as we have seen in the past, you can have a poor movie or TV show based on strong books, ie Resident Evil.
