I can't get over the sheer racism/sexism that comes with diversity quotas. The idea that something automatically becomes better if more women are in it, or if more black people are in it. That's not the way the world works. The England Women's Football team have recently been criticised for (currently only) being all-white, yet this argument is going on at the exact time they won the European championships. They have proven that the team members were literally the best people for the job. Yet that is not good enough, so they expose their hypocrisy.

The Argonath (Giant Statues) in LoTR that are marking Gondors Northern Border at the Lake Raurosare are a depiction of Isildur and Anarion his younger Brother that both founded Gondor.
When Sauron attacked Minas Ithil, Isildur fled to his Father Elendil in Arnor and together with Gil-Galad they formed the Last Alliance as seen in the Intro of LoTR. In those 7 years when they were preparing this Huge Army, Anarion was defending Gondor and holding Mordors forces at bay until the Great Army came to its Rescue. Anarion fell during the Siege of Barad-Dur and after Isildur died childless the Line of the Kings of Gondor fell to Anarions offspring.

You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him."

Golden Girls, Shad. It was Golden Girls that didn't have enough male representation.
Also, the description of the line of Kings was *very* significant to their characters, because it came from their Elvish heritage, which was shared with Elrond and Arwen. Aragorn is described as having black hair with a few gray threads and gray eyes. Elrond and Arwen are both also described as black-haired and gray-eyed. This coloring came from the Noldor princess Luthien, the most beautiful Elf ever to walk the earth on either continent, and Arwen was supposed to be her lookalike.

The Karate Kid headband doesn't actually have the flag of Imperial Japan on it, though many seem to remember it having the Imperial Japanese flag: it has a completely original, possibly Samurai inspired crest (still strange, since its meant to be Okinawan).
This matters because the sign of Imperial Japan is what is considered to be the fascist icon of Japan, and when most misremember the sign on Daniel Larusso's headband as the flag of Imperial Japan, they misrepresent the film as having a controversial Japanese fascist symbol as its front cover.

It wasn't the addition of new characters. It was the obvious scrapping of given guidelines for those characters. They have the rights to all three LOTR books and their Appendices, they are basically claiming to flesh out Elrond's account of the Rings at the Council, and yet they are ignoring the clearly described focus of at least two of the Kindreds.
In one trailer, they have a Galadriel or Harfoot girl narrating how the Elves "had their forests." The Ring rhyme clearly states "Three rings for the Elven kings/ *Under the sky* ", Every description of Elven homes involves commenting about the natural light, and Galadriel's great gift to Frodo was the light of their most beloved star (technically the Light of Valinor as derived from a Silmaril). Not only that, but Rivendell is described as having trees, but not being a forest, nor located in a forest. Gilgalad's great Realm in the Northwest may have had forests, but was not specifically a forest. In The Fellowship of the Ring, the Fellowship passes through the ruins of Celebrimbor's Realm, which has Holly as a remnant of his landscaping choices, but no forests. Legolas comments about how the stones, specifically, remember being shaped by the Elves. The door they passed to get into Moria was the door Celebrimbor's folk used and, in token of friendship, Holly was planted on either side of the door when it was made and lived there through millennia until the Watcher in the Water tore them up to block the door. Of the only two forest realms of the Elves described, the Greenwood/Mirkwood was relatively young, NO Elves lived in either Fangorn or the Old Forest (which you would expect if the Elves really were so focused on trees, and the Ents would have been unnecessary) and Lothlorien only existed as a forest at all because Galadriel's folk planted and tended it. Mallorn trees are NOT native to Middle Earth. In short: only Elves whose taste runs to living in forests care about living in forests.
In another trailer, Durin says, "There can be no trust between hammer and rock." Anyone who reads Gimli and Legolas' conversation about the caves behind Helm's Deep will know that no dwarf of Tolkien's Middle Earth would EVER say such a line. All of this is stuff that can be learned from the trilogy. Forget the owning the film rights, you don't even need to have read any of Tolkien's other writings to know this.

Here’s what I noticed about how they handled the “backlash” against themselves. If they knew anything they would have known two things: the first being what we are truly upset about. The black male elf doesn’t even have any hair. And the female dwarf doesn’t even have a beard. But what really struck me, and I want to be an author so I’ve been studying character building & have built my own characters of different races, is how they designed the black male elf.
If you’re going to create an original character of an already written lore, you need to follow that lore. He should have long flowing black hair like Elrond. But it was suspicious to me how he didn’t. It’s almost like Amazon designed him that way to remind people that “hey look we have a black man as an elf & we need an image to show you to constantly remind you that he’s black & if you don’t like it then you’re a racist.” It’s almost like he’s been Tokenized. Almost like Hollywood wants black actors & actresses to stand out instead of blend into the lore so there’s no backlash. Almost like they’re targets for Hollywood to unleash gaslighting & assault on the fans. And to me, that’s the biggest crock of racism I’ve ever seen. They’re using those two actors as a shield to justify what they’ve done to Tolkien. And if I were them, I’d be pissed off.
They’re so desperate to justify themselves with this shit that they’re willing to make a fool out of themselves when it comes to standing there ground & they do it the way that they do because they think the consumers of the product aren’t smart enough to call them out. So they market there bullshit to non fans to build there own little army of “fans” to make themselves feel better.

You're right. They still can "represent" "POC" but not by working against the established lore and worldbuilding.
      1. Disa. The name itself is another proof of their agenda. Instead of just naming her Dis, which is the only female dwarf name mentioned in Tolkien's works (Dis is the sister of Thorin Oakenshield and is the mother of Kili and Fili), they feel the need to emphasize that she's female by adding "a" as if dwarven names are just like Spanish names like Louisa or Gabriella. Dis is already a female dwarf name. Just reuse the name. No need to change the spelling.
      2. Ignoring the skin color of the dwarf princess, she still doesn't pass as a female dwarf not only because she have no beard but because she looks and (probably sounds) female. The main point of female dwarves having beards is that they're NOT supposed to be feminine in voice and appearance. Heck they can literally cast a TRANS man to play Disa and call it a day.
      3. Bronwyn and Theo. Okay. Them actually casting an Iranian woman and a brown skinned lad for "Southerners" as they call themselves make sense to me. BUT their names are another proof that their writer's imagination is non-existent 😭. For Valinor's sake, Bronwyn and Theo are WHITE names, almost identical to the famous Rohirrim names Eowyn and Theoden. They could have invented a much "Southerner" names for them. Bronwyn means "white-breasted" in Welsh. Seriously?
      4. Arondir. I don't think that they will actually explain to us why a Silvan elf is dark skinned. Maybe they'll just leave it that and tell us that the elves are always been diverse in the beginning or some shit. The elves are not similar to the men. Men have different skin colors. Elves, however, are either all white or all black period

In the show the female lead is insanely capable, but rather than shrugging everything off like an emotionless robot, her circumstances nearly break her and definitely damage her permanently. It's the difference between real adversity (where characters are noticeably damaged in some way by the event), and fake adversity, which is just an issue for you to roll through with your Terminatoresque combat capacity.

Amazon cannot accurately portray Elendil and his sons (Isildur & Anarion), because their most defining characteristic, prior to the fall of Numenor, was faith. Elendil led The Faithful, a minority of Numenorians who still honored the will of the Valar, despite intense persecution from the king. As a reward for their faithfulness, Elendil and The Faithful were spared when The Ban of the Valar was broken and the king sailed West to wage war against Valinor. Two of my lady's favourite books:
HMS Ulises by Alasdair MCClaine, and the long walk by Stephen King.
Mcclaine has literally no female characters, because the book is set on a British distroyer in world war 2 crossing the north Atlantic, yet my lady loved the characters, the journey and the struggle, even though she's not a big fan of war stories.
In the Long walk women are mentioned, but since the book revolved around 99 boys getting shot in a dystopian walking contest, it has almost no women at all. Also again, fantastic characters and dynamics, one of Stephen King's best, and that's saying something.
one of my favourite books: Roses and rot by Kat Howard, set at an art academy with connections to the fey, set specifically in a house of 7 women artists.
Amazingly written, gorgeously beautiful, and yes, with only two named male characters in the entire book, since its mainly about the dynamics between the women.
And yet what pisses my lady the hell off? Misandry and wokeness jammed down her throat!
She's often said to me while reading how much she hates books with an enforced female empowerment message.

I just don't like that they're adding characters that didn't exist in Tolkien's story, and removing ones that did.
Stories are all about the journeys of characters. You can't remove a bunch of characters and claim it's the same story as before.
Similarly, you can't change the backstory of an established character and expect it to resonate with an audience the same way it did before.
The fact that these people are in charge of writing stories, yet seemingly don't know what storytelling is all about, should give us a clue as to why their stories fail.
If you don't know what makes a good story, you can't expect people to enjoy the story you've written. I think RoP is going to suffer from this.

    • @Ihaka17
      @Ihaka17 2 роки тому

I'm pretty new to Tolkien's works, but from what I've read, Dwarves were originally formed by Aulë from stone, yet, it isn't specified what colour the stone was, so the interpretation is really open to a person's imagination - meaning, there is nothing “objectively true” or “canonically correct” about imagining them universally white-skinned. Also, I don't think the sun is a relevant point in the increase of melanin because that theory ascertains that would take literally millions of years. Also, Orcs and goblins stay away from sunlight yet are white to charcoal in colour, this would suggest that the sun isn't the reason for their skin colour, perhaps more like Melkor, his physical manifestation was reflective of his arrogance, envy and malice.
In regards to Elves, there is one instance where Tolkien describes Maeglin as having white skin, but that's it. One could even argue that Tolkien described the Noldor as white since he does mention that Maeglin has a resemblance to a Noldor. However, that’s a far cry from describing all Elves as white. In fact, it could be argued that it’s evidence to the contrary - the description does not mention that Maeglin has two eyes, or ten fingers, because those things are true of all Elves. But it does mention that his skin is white, maybe because that's not so self-evident, maybe because it’s not true of all Elves. And given that Elves are “beyond all other beauty that Iluvatar has caused to be”, and especially given that there are canonical "POC" who are villains, I find the idea that they’re all white pretty gross.
Additionally, it would be quite canonically consistent to view Elves' skin colour however you want them to be. Why? Because their origins are based on the incarnation of Ilúvatar's sentimental expressions at the Third Theme. With the secret fire giving soul to the Quendi, and a melody providing their manifestation onto the shores of Cuiviénen, there is pretty much nothing in their ancestral heritage to suggest all 144 Quendi were white-skinned.

@@Ihaka17 although for the Dwaves, I should check what you say, because their creation is a bit blurry in my memory.
However, due to their subterranean nature, they could, at best, blend with the rocky underground decor or, if we rely on the Norse sources Tolkien took inspiration from, look somewhat like stunted Elves.
For the Elves, given their longevity and that they don't seem to evolve, unlike humans and other species, their skin color is white, due to my Sun argument.
For the Orcs, Trolls and other corrupted species, I often pictured them more greenish-brown to link them to corrupted flesh, and also given how they evolved in European folklore through the centuries.
If they wanted to add diversity in Middle Earth and still remain true to the lore, they could have easily done all that with the humans or add brand new humanoid species that could have disappeared or reduce in importance later (to keep the LotR canon), since the first and second age, that didn't span over "millions" of years, unlike on Earth, still focus essentially on the main species and could allow room for more creativity and add more organic layers to the world created by Tolkien, instead of lazily forcing an ideological agenda down the fans' throats.

What amazes me with all this inclusive narrative trope is that they could as easily create new content integrating all their intersectional dogmas, and tell stories from their viewpoint.
But they need to use loved and recognized lore and brands to get the fans, that they will ultimately lose, once they applied the intersectional cheap varnish.
My hypothesis on this is that they know that an original woke show wouldn't work, because the intersectionals can only "denounce", not create, and since their theories are so disconnected from reality, the story would become a dogmatic preach and lack anything that makes an engaging story, especially nuance. My bet is that, aside of the hardcore believers, even the intersectional crowd wouldn't watch it.
So it's far safer to ruin beloved stories and wish that the fans, in need of content, will endure the intersectional bullshit and still grasp and the parts they couldn't ruin due to the inherent quality of the source material.
