    I found a nice North Face jacket in the ocean and cleaned it up to see if it was salvageable. The only thing wrong with it was the zipper pull. This video gave me the information I needed to remove the old one and replace it while replacing the stop with a craft glue stick. Thanks for the help. Very detailed and covers all the zippers imaginable!

    After going through a number of videos so I could replace the slider on the plastic zipper of a winter coat, this was the only video with a useful demonstration (shaving the little plastic nubs on the top stop on the box side). This ultimately allowed me to get the slider on the coat, and I’m able to zip it all the way to the top without the slider coming off. I didn’t like the idea of ripping off the matching plastic top stop as was shown in other videos and replacing it with a metal bit, and now I understand there was no need to do that. Thank you for this super helpful and easy fix video!

    This video cut to the chase and explained everything I needed to know to repair my 50 year old Sierra Designs nylon windbreaker that I’ve been using regularly my entire adult life. And it did so in only 6 minutes. It missed nothing. I take my hat off to you sir; you certainly know how to narrate an effective (and inspiring!) instructional video.

    The everyday things I use but never considered how it works until I had too, was going to loosen the threads from my jeans and ask my mom to sew in a new zip I never knew it could be taken out by removing the stopper, never occurred to me that's the stopper. You taught me something new today thankz.

    Went through a lot of zipper vids to find one actually showing how to remove the top zipper stopper. I thought I'd have to buy a special zipper pincer tool from Amazon to pull it off. My $250 North Face jacket's slider got lost, and I wanted to replace it with the slider on an older North Face jacket. Incredibly North Face with not just mail me a slider, no matter how much I beg. You have to go through a long warranty application and repair process, which ultimately ends with mailing them the jacket and being without it for about a month. I hope I can get that top stopper off as easily as you did!

    My Winter coat is about 22-25 yrs old. The only issue was the zipper pull came apart. With this tutorial I was able to get a zipper from a donor jacket and make my own stop with a piece of a clip on electrical connector. It should work fine. I am going to firm it up up with stitching, but metal stops much better than plastic.

    • @fixpro256
      @fixpro256  3 роки тому

      I never got around to making that video. But basically, I use a clear adhesive like Amazing Goop. I put a little painters tape around the area to prevent making a mess and to keep the stop as small as possible. Sometimes you can put the adhesive on the back of the zipper material so you can't even see it. For the thread version, I use use needle and thread to make loops around the teeth in the area where the old stop was. But that doesn't look as nice.

      Sorry about that contrast problem. I should have used a darker background so the contrast would be better. I was cutting off the extra parts on those zippers to allow the slide to come off. It was just a couple of examples. Yours may be different. Cut just a little at a time. Then use a dab of adhesive to rebuild that area (to keep the new slide on, if you need to).

    Once the plastic “tabs” are cut off the stop on the box-side how do I get that stop to function as a stop again once I replace the zipper pull?

    • @fixpro256
      @fixpro256  4 роки тому +2

      I like to use just a tad of clear adhesive to create a lump on the back of the zipper where the top stop use to be. I use Amazing Goop for that. But you can use others. They sell metal ones you can crimp on with pliers. Can also use needle and thread. Practice on a junk zipper a few times is a good idea.

    I have a dress with a large metal zipper that I want to make into a skirt because the top part was badly made but I like the zipper on it would I be able to reuse the top stop?

    • @fixpro256
      @fixpro256  6 років тому +1

      It is hard to say without being able to see it. But, "usually" a metal zipper has a metal top stop that is just crimped on. You can reuse them, if you are careful. It is best to buy a similar zipper and practice a few times. They also sell replacement top stops that might work. Or, you could use a blob of e6000 adhesive on the back of the zipper to act like a top stop. But, if you have a box and pin at the top, they are almost impossible to reuse.

    I have a zipper with the plastic hook kind in the video the silder broke how do I remove the stopper to replace the slider and stopper? ?

    • @fixpro256
      @fixpro256  6 років тому

      Maybe I don't understand the question. I show how to remove the stop in the video. You just cut the hook off with a razor. Remove the old slider. Install the new slider. I like to use a dab of adhesive on the back of the zipper where the hook was. I like using either Amazing Goop or E6000. No need to put anything on the front. Just a little adhesive on the back is good enough. Let me know if that is not what you were looking for.

  • @comx427

    Can the crimped on metal C shape top stops be reused?
    I have to replace the slider on a old spring jacket with a plastic zipper and the metal top stop is extremely close to the last zipper tooth.
    No idea how hard or easy it will come off yet.Still have to buy the slider.
    Are they usually crimped on pretty tight?

    • @fixpro256
      @fixpro256  6 років тому +1

      They can be reused. The top stops shaped like a C with fangs on them are not as hard to get off, but are easy to damage when reinstalling. The top stops shaped like a U are harder to get off. They are usually pretty tight. Best to use a pair of flush cutters to get under the edge. Careful not to damage the tape/ribbon. Buy a cheap zipper with a similar top stop and experiment on it. If you damage the original and can't find a replacement that looks ok, consider using a glue stop like the one I used at 4:40 in the video. Just a blob on the back of one side of the zipper is all you need. Use clear adhesive and it will be very hard to even see it.

    • @comx427
      @comx427 6 років тому

      Thanks.
      It looks like they are the U shaped top stops.
      I have a small pair of those cutters.
      Hopefully it works out.
      The pull broke off the Vislon YKK 5V zipper and I'm using a paperclip for a pull for now.

    • @fixpro256
      @fixpro256  6 років тому

      Just be careful with the ribbon/tape. If you damage it, use a fabric adhesive to help stop any fraying. Use your cutters under the backside of the stop. Use a little force at a time and then try to pull the stop off with pliers. Once it is off, you can use the cutters to expand the stop a little more so you can put it back on. You can get a cheap zipper from Walmart, fabric stores, or ebay to practice on. Or, check some old jeans you may have around the house. They usually use the same kind of top stop. Good luck

    • @comx427
      @comx427 6 років тому

      I purchased a replacement #5 zipper slider that also included a new top stop.
      I had no luck trying to remove the top stop with the small cutters.
      I had great success removing the top stop with a small sharp chisel and hammer.
      Had the jacket on my workbench and used the 1-1/2" thick wood mounting base of a bench grinder as a back stop.
      It's a little tricky keeping the chisel from moving against the top stop,but once it's lined up and stationary a few light hits with the hammer easily expanded the top stop and I removed it with my fingers.
      This method did not damage the top stop and zipper tape at all.

    Do you know anything about fixing the zipper on a Carhartt style jacket with the heavy duty zipper? There's a tooth that's out of wack close to the bottom stop on the slider side. The top stop is not very malleable at all.

    • @theSemiChrist
      @theSemiChrist 5 років тому

      Well, never mind on the top stop. I rarely zip winter coats to the top and it's a work jacket, so i just made a tiny snip near the stop and put the zipper back on. The bottom side that slips into the stop on the slider side is missing a bunch of teeth and is loose from the fabric and I hadn't noticed. Oh well, it's too big for me anyway, I was just gonna fix it before giving it away.

    I have become the zipper fixer queen around here. Mainly because I'm frugal, but also because we work hard and play hard here in Colorado so we're hard on our gear and...seems "they just don't make things like they use-ta" First you gotta figure out what's wrong, make a diagnosis, what happened, what broke, what's malfunctioning? Then what gets more confusing is the zipper parts can be called by different names i.e. often zippers break at the bridge or cover or lug or crown, that part where the puller, tab, or pull tab attaches to the slider or body, which joins and separates or engages or meshes together the elements or teeth 🙄
    Then there's the two way zipper or zippers with double sliders: head to head or bottom to bottom... or how about the double sliders with 2 pull tabs each? Like on my tent's doorway so I can open it from inside or out, or hemming coveralls or ski pants, cut and shorten the zippers on the lower legs so they'll still slip over your boots.
    Sheesh

      I don't have a video on it, but If you are talking about a zipper that has the stops sewn into the material, (assuming you don't want to in-sew them), and assuming you are talking about removing the slider, you can cut thru the teeth of the zipper near the area that is near what would be considered the bottom, then remove the zipper slider, install a new slider, then glue the cut areas together to act as a new bottom stop. There are probably videos on this on youtube.
