Here’s the ten second version: Get a flat head screwdriver and fit in in the broken side. Pry that side until it fits the zipper in and clamp it down to secure the zipper on the track
Haha I used this method. Made much more sense to me since flatheads are easier to obtain. I also used the flathead and banged it down on my zipper to secure it. All you need is that flathead.
Thank you! I am a reseller and recently got a leather skirt for $1 because the zipper was broken. I realized replacing would be a pain and paying for alterations would be expensive. After watching your video a few times, and a little trial and error.... I got the zipper fixed! Skirt is like new. I'm subscribing because I know this is why a lot of clothing gets reduced to nothing in price. I'm sure I'll be referring to your videos a lot in the future. You my hero! :-)
You just made me look like a hero to my wife. Thank you for much for this video. I would also like to add to people that this works for plastic sliders as well.
oh my actual goodness!! you bloody saved my life! i was able to fix my leavers prom dress thanks to you, two days before i had to wear it because thanks to my incompetent little brother it broke cos he doesnt know how to zip up a dress. But i fixed it using your tutorial thank you so much ily!!!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I just fixed my zipper (using your instructions) on my skate bag. I feel very resourceful and smart now. Thanks for the pre-Christmas boost to the old self-esteem!
Thank you!!! My Samsonite Suitcase zipper that expands the center, opened just as we were leaving for a week vacation. I thought I was going to have to hunt down a zipper repair shop. After getting back home, I searched UA-cam and found your video. I used 2 pair of pliers like yours and had it repaired within 20 minutes.
Thank you! I bought my daughter a pair of pants with zippers, and didn't realize until we got home that one of them had a side off the track, (or chain). Thanks to your tutorial, I was able to fix them! Saved me a trip back to the store!
OMG, it worked - thank you for this video! I fixed a separated ankle zip on a pair of winter running tights. Started the video at the 4-minute mark (appreciate the tip), and then played it again from the beginning while working the slider open. Well worth the time overall.
You are officially AWESOME! I took your methodology with a pair of needle-nose pliers and it worked!!! THANK YOU! I just opened the side that was dislodged and put the zipper in and then clamped down on it.
Oh my god... Oh my god. I just had the most furious 2-3 hours of my life. Trying to do this on my binder/portfolio was living hell xD The tracks just wouldn't align and work no matter how hard I pressed to reattach the slider. I swear this repeated so many times because sometimes it would just break off again. I thought I was gonna die when eventually the OPPOSITE side of the slider. Now I had to do it twice. Not much later, the slider just broke, and I gaped in shock and just layed in bed for a while. Then I did a slider transplant where I took the slider off an old backpack and used that one. It was so much easier, and all of a sudden I pulled it and it ZIPPED shut. My mouth dropped and I think that's the most accomplished I've ever felt in my life. It took a long time but it was worth it for me because I need to take my binder to school tomorrow, so my stuff could have fallen out. I couldn't just buy a new binder. It worked and that's what matters to me. And hey, now I have 2 different zippers cuz I'm all fancy like that xD so cool.
Omg. You are the best!!!!!! You saved my couch... I washed the cushion covers (I do this 2-3times a year) and 3 broke consecutively. I'm back in business. Thank you!
This was extremely helpful. For anyone in need of a quick fix, I can say for certain this works wonders. Thanks for posting this! Can't tell you how many backpacks I've replaced due to hopped zippers when I was little.
Thanks! I had a broken zipper on my bookbag and on the very first day of school I had to close it with clothespins. It is the second day of school and as soon as I watched this video, I figured it out. Thank you!
One of the most useful and helpful videos on UA-cam. I would recommend using a flat screwdriver to spread the slider. Much easier and less damage. Use a pair of smooth-jaw pliers to crimp it again to minimize damage. If you really want to avoid damage, put a buffer between the pliers and the slider, like a piece of fabric. That way there's no direct metal the metal contact. Thank you very much for the tutorial.
I used both bc my slider is brass And difficult to open. I use the plier on one side and the flat screwdriver on the other. pushing in different directions I was able to spread it
THANK YOU!!!! This video just saved MY LIFE!!! I'm going to my in laws tomorrow for Christmas and they hate me and my zipper broke on my boots weeks ago but I just fixed it because of this video so now I get to look good while I get judged!!
Wow! That was surprisingly easy. The zipper on my wallet came off earlier. I found and watched your video and skipping to 3:57 as the annotation says. I didn't have any pliers on hand so I used the point of my metal nail file to do the prying. Then a fork as a hard surface, and my nail file again, to pinch it closed. I got it fixed in less time then it took for your video to finish from roughly 4:30 point. Thank you for your video!
Ah, thank you so much. I was able to do this with your excellent instructions. I had two zippers on a bag and I accidentally broke one by prying too much with the wire cutters. To prevent the other one from breaking I used vise grip locking pliers on the side susceptible to breakage, then I pried the other part as you described. The second zipper pull opened up slightly, I was able to get it back onto the other zipper side, line it up, then tighten it with needle-nose pliers and voila - working zipper. Many thanks.
Thank you for the great info. You saved me big time! I was able to repair the zipper on my greenhouse door. Without your video, my veggies would be dead due to the overnight temperatures. Thank you!
Thaaaaank youuuuu- except I didn't have a plier, so I made do with a potato peeler, along with a pair of kitchen scissors and a garlic crusher to clamp it back down
Thank you. It solved my problem eventually. After shaving off the top teeth on the zipper, the tape kept fraying; possibly because it was an old zipper I had been holding onto for something long abandoned. After much frustration, I put a small piece of transparent tape on the ends to keep the fraying in check and act as a needle into the slider. Thanks for getting me started to solve my problem.
Ahhh I’m so glad I found this! I broke the zip on my favourite swimming costume, and the metal part that holds the tracks together came off too. I had to do a little DIY replacement sewing for that, but I’d never have thought of needing to clamp it (since I didn’t have any tools at hand, my teeth were a very slightly painful, but handy replacement). Either way! Thank you for literally saving my life. Well, my swimming costume’s life anyway.
I was able to follow even when he went off screen. I fixed a skirt that I bought on sale and it works perfect now. I was able to use a pair of scissors to open the bar and close it back with a pair of small pliers. No visible damage to the zipper but there isn't any paint on it.
Magnificent!!!!! You just helped me to fix the zipper on my Le Pliage handbag!!!! Saved me buying a new one!!!!! And only took about 10mins!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
Thanks for the help, didn’t have any tools so i used the tip on my charger to open it and then press it between 2 powerbanks to squeze it together😂 Gotta be creative when you are on the move🙌

Thank you so much, very detailed and I resisted my tendency to manhandle and break the zipper! I fixed my small bag for traveling, and now it is now longer open. A two zipper deal on the track and I was able to fix both! Thanks again,
Great video man, thanks for explaining - only part that I struggled with was re-clamping the slider down at the end. I was fixing it on a pretty thick bag so was thinking that I should have it as open as possible to get it to catch early, but couldn't do it with the pliers. Ended up sliding it up more along the zipper, thinking that if it didn't work that I could just do it again properly with some more time and better tools (or worst comes to worst, take it in to the shop). Anyway, the zipper caught and engaged no problem and didn't have any trouble before the point where I'd re-tightened it. Makes sense in retrospect, but for some reason thought that the zipper might not catch properly before the point where I re-clamped it. Anyway, fiddled a good 10 minutes trying to do it as far back as I could before giving up, so might be good to mention that it doesn't matter where on the zipper it is to save some others their time :D
Thank you so much for posting this video. I’ve looked at a dozen other videos that all showed me how to replace the zipper pull, but the only one that showed me how to repair the pull was your video. I had both situations on a backpack diaper bag. In under ten minutes I had both zipper pulls fixed! I’m a happy camper.
This man is a LEGEND. Be careful when prying I almost broke mine but in the end, it came out great. My zipper is grey anyways so I didn’t have to worry abt the paint... I had to go to another country to get that bag I’m so glad you made this video thank you!!! 😊
Not sure if I'm innovative was or just plain stubborn (I was determined to wear this specific dress) but ladies I did this with a eyelash curler and an earring!! We all have those things at home ;) thank me later
It totally worked on my bag.thanks. I'm going to a friend's for the weekend. My brand new and only overnight bag's zipper got off track and wouldn't close. I thought no way could I fix this.Nor did I believe these tips would solve the issue. I oiled the zipper thinking it was the cause. Re-alined, squeezed the end and walla. Amazing.thought the worst and achieved the best thanks to your video.
easier to pick it off the garment at the bottom, and slide the whole thing back on from the bottom, pinch the zipper part tight, then sew it back on...but hey, I'm a seamstress...
Thank you Jesus! I used this method with a flathead screwdriver on some brand new pants where a pocket zipper derailed! Buddy even if I never use the pocket ever again, you are a god send!
Around 6:12 you go off screen and it's the worst time. Please upload a fixed video where you AREN'T going off screen. Y'know, for the people actually trying to figure out how to do this.
Jeremy Harnage I definitely get your point, but there's not much to it.. spread open the slider on the side u need to fix, put track back in, pull both sides tight to remove slack, put slider at base of zipper tracks, pinch back together to secure track in pull, zip.
Here’s the ten second version:
Get a flat head screwdriver and fit in in the broken side. Pry that side until it fits the zipper in and clamp it down to secure the zipper on the track

I would have liked seeing it more clearly
Wish he would do his demonstrations on lighter colored zippers.
I almost got an anxiety attack 😂

You just made me look like a hero to my wife. Thank you for much for this video. I would also like to add to people that this works for plastic sliders as well.
Your instructions were on-point, and did not necessitate doing permanent damage to the zipper and mending the cut, like others suggested. Thanks!
Wow. It worked. I just saved two $80 tennis bags. Took 2 min for the first one and 45 seconds for the second one. Thanks man.

Thank you! This was exactly the fix I needed, and you helped me get it done in just a few minutes without damaging the zipper or the pull. Perfect!
how did you get it fixed in a "few" minutes when this video was unnecessarily 10 minutes long?!! lol

Thank you so much! I've had this little backpack from 2007 that's had a broken zipper for as long as I can remember, and now it zips up properly!
When he opens the zipper I would recommend a flat head screw driver to open it. It won't cause less marks on the paint and zipper
It will cause less marks*
Yeah I just used one and it works so much better for me. Plus it's an easy wedge to pry the mouth open better
Thanks for the tips. In other comments, someone else used a butter knife as well. So what ever it takes. : )
Any1 still watching in 2024?!
I think I'm gonna just do a little seam ripping and pull the slider right off so I can use the fork trick, it's worked for me before

Thank you so much! This worked perfectly on a sawdust collection bag and I didn't need to sew on a new zipper! Awesome video!
I DOUBT this needs 9 minutes to explain. I just wanna fix my damn zipper
But dude! You gotta know about the clam shape. How could you possibly comprehend what he says if you don’t know about the clam shape? 1:28
Around 6:12 you go off screen and it's the worst time. Please upload a fixed video where you AREN'T going off screen. Y'know, for the people actually trying to figure out how to do this.
Jeremy Harnage working on a quick vid to keep my hands in the frame. Should have it up by end of next week. Thanks for the comment.
UCAN Zippers USA put some tape down on the table to show you where the camera is framed.
Jeremy Harnage I definitely get your point, but there's not much to it.. spread open the slider on the side u need to fix, put track back in, pull both sides tight to remove slack, put slider at base of zipper tracks, pinch back together to secure track in pull, zip.
I did it!!!! thank you so much! This skirt has been in my repair pile for years and I can finally wear it again!!!!
Thank you so much!!!
Happy to help!
there is no reason for this video to be 10 fucking minutes long
