Thank you for this, sir. I have a flute case that came with a case cover. The cover has two zippers, one on either side. One of the zipper pulls recently broke off. I tried gluing it back together with Super Glue and then Duco Cement, but neither worked. (I've never had a material reject these glues before, which makes me speculate as to what its composition is. I suspect a mixture of pig metal and plastic.) After watching your video, I realize that the easiest way to fix the problem is with a piece of wire. It's a small-gauge wire coated with black insulation. Thanks once again!
It's a little more trouble, but my favorite is a piece or fabric cord with a figure 8 tied in it close to the slide. Might have to melt one end to a point to get it thru the hole. Then I leave a few inches to grab and pull on. Warm the ends with a lighter to keep them from fraying and smooth with a piece of flexible plastic, like water bottle material. Thanks for the comment.
@@fixpro256 After I put the wire through the hole and wound the two ends together, I got out my glue gun and put a dollop of hot glue on the ends to keep them from coming undone. The blob of dried glue also serves as a grabbing piece.

Thanks for the ideas and info on the locking mech. I have a zipper pull on a pair of shoes, the colors are flush so finding a piece that color matches would be difficult and expensive probably compared to the cost of the shoe. The pull that broke has 2 holes and I think that it was the cheap metal combined with the stress to the area of one of them that broke it off. Since there is a second hole nearer to the zipline(?) I have been using a fork tine to pull the zipper up. It's generally easier to slide the zipper down to take off the shoe, but putting on is the problem. Before seeing this, I had thought about using a keyring, but again the color match would be an issue.
You might try the handmade jewelry department in the craft stores. You might be able to use a very small ring thru the slider and then something else like a piece of leather attached to the ring.
Just be cautious of the larger key rings. They can easily get hung on things and damage your zipper slider or garments. Especially in the washing machine.

Hi Jamie, You will have to find a zipper with a similar tooth size and slide. Remove the top stops on both zippers. Remove the slides from both zippers. Put the new slide on the old zipper. Replace the stops. That is the subject of my next video on zippers, but it will probably take me a month or so to get it out there. They also make snap together slides. You will have to use a pair of cutters to break the old slide off and then snap the new slide in place. But, beware that they will tell you they work on all zippers, but they do not. Easy on this zipper -- but I just had the Talon zipper pull tab break off from the metal which attached it to the pull. There is no hole to link to a tab, just the tab and a tiny piece of metal remaining.
Talon is a brand. They make different designs, but I think I understand what you're talking about. I think the area you're talking about is the crown. It's usually permanently made onto the slider. Once it comes off, it usually can't be repaired because it messes up the slider.

Old zipper pulls make great replace. I cut them off old clothes with part of the zipper and set them aside until I need them. New ones cost too much at the fabric store.
The entire crown seems to have fallen off on my jacket zipper slider. It looks similar to the one in the video -- fat plastic zipper and with that internal locking element. So, I can slide it up but have to manually, delicately hold the catch to be able to get it down again. How might I be able to rig it if the top crown piece isn't even there? Thank you.
Hello, this is an excellent video and shows the parts very clearly. My question is this: is it possible to replace the bridge on a locking zipper pull like the one shown in your video. My zipper is a YKK 5CN locking zipper pull and the bridge has broken. I’m wondering if I can remove the bridge that looks like it is pressed onto the body of the slider and press on a new bridge and locking spring? If this is possible it seems like it would be much easier than replacing the whole slider. Thank you!
I haven't seen one that you can replace. They usually break when you pull the bridge off. If I remember correctly, they are spot welded or fused onto the slider. But, if you have a new slider that you are getting ready to install, it would be worth a shot to see if you could get the bridge off of the broken slider first. If you can, then you may stand a chance of doing the bridge swap.
I don't think you can remove the lock from most zippers, but you may be able to use a pull with a larger diameter than the original so it will always keep the lock disengaged.
I have two jackets with zipper tabs that I want to remove from the sliders. I want to place a tab on the other jacket. I know I could change the sliders but they and the teeth on the jackets are different from each other. Changing the tabs seems like the best option but I don't know how.
The tab attaches to the slider by going thru the hole in the crown. Most crowns are attached at both ends and are very hard to remove without destroying the slider. On that style, usually the only way to get the tabs off is to cut the tab. But then you have to weld/solder it back together once it's on the new slider. Some sliders have a solid metal crown that can be bent out using a small screwdriver as a wedge. Then the tab can be slipped off. Then bend the new slider crown out to slip the tab on and bend the crown back. But, many sliders are made of cheap metal and it may break easily when you try to bend it out. A good idea to buy some cheap ones and practice a few times first. They also make some aftermarket tabs that can be installed on most crowns.

Interesting. I've never seen a crown come loose without major damage to the zipper. But I am definitely no expert on zippers. You may be able to find a similar zipper on ebay, amazon, or a thrift store with old clothes that you can steal parts off of. Can practice on zippers that are similar but not a perfect match. But I haven't had any luck taking crowns off. Usually screws them up too bad to reuse. If you give up on replacing the crown, you will have to replace the slide instead. Good luck. If you are talking about the u-shaped piece that is crimped onto the slider, No. I haven't been able to figure a way to do that. But you can replace the slider.

I want to put a DOUBLE or split heavy duty jump ring on my jacket but the head is too thick. You know how zipper heads are. Is there any way to get a charm onto the end? I thought a jump ring but that's not working. Thank you
If it's on a jacket, it probably has a lock built into it. So you have to have a little slack or the ring will release the lock all the time and the zipper will unzip when you're walking around. I don't know how small they make jump rings or key rings. But they get pretty small. At sail shops like West Marine, they have stainless steel rings (kind of like a key ring) used to rig sail equipment. Then you can attach any of the small charms you find at the hobby shops, or online.
Do you have a video on how to repair a zipper slider that completely came off (zipper top stop missing)? I have a snowsuit with missing top stop and zipper came off while putting it in the child so the zipper had to be pulled apart to remove the child.
They are usually crimped on in a way that mangles it when you try to remove that piece. I even tried with a really large zipper and didn't have much luck. Sorry

Hook???? Are you talking about the crown (the part of the slide that forms the hole that the pull attaches to), or the hook under the crown of the slide that is found on a locking slide? Either way, I have never found a way to fix those parts. You will probably have to replace the slide by removing the stops at the top or bottom of the zipper tape (the material with the teeth made onto it)
This video helped because of the locking pin, gave me more insight. It's the detail that I couldn't figure out, rest of the #lifehacks should learn from you user.
It will as long as the pull isn't too thick where it goes thru the hole. If it's too thick, it'll keep the lock disengaged and you zipper will keep unzipping on it's own. Could be embarrassing ;-)

So I can't replace a missing pull piece with another one without breaking the whole thing? My zipper slider looks just like yours, the crown opens up a bit when I pull the pull piece. I hoped there is a way to somehow unlock the slider's crown, cause I have a nice pull piece to put to good use. Although to use a keyring is a pretty clever idea. I have previopusly already put a standard paper clip, it's nice, but not hard enough, so it often deforms when I pull.
Hi Jetto, Try googling zipper pull replacement. There are a few that split in half and then lock around the crown piece. There are also some made of string but they may not work well with a locking zipper that is usually used on clothes. The hobby shops may have some options in the jewelry making section.
@@fixpro256 Thanks, it looks like the crown has an opening mechanism, that gets stuck by desing when trying to force it open. almost like a car's hood, when it's not fully closed. seems it's going to open a bit but it doesn't, it seems physically impossible, because of the two shapes are made to interlock, to remain stuck.
That sounds kind of like a locking slider. It has a spring loaded point that sticks into the teeth of the zipper when you aren't pulling on it. Can you move the slider if you put something like a paperclip thru the crown and gently pull out while trying to move the slider?
@@fixpro256 yes, I have a paperclip now inserted into the crown, instead of the pull piece. I tried to pull it up while moving the slider up and down, it was still sliding just as before, so there was no blocking. Oh by the way this slider is located on a Full-Zip Sweatshirt by Lee Jeans, so it's not a small one. I wish I could find the exact picture, but no luck so far.
Hi Jetto, I'm not sure I understand the problem. It sounds like you have a standard large clothes zipper. It locks when you aren't pulling on it, and unlocks when you pull on it. That way you can unzip when you pull the zipper but it doesn't come unzipped by itself. It sounds like all you need to do is replace the zipper pull. Am I not understanding the problem???
I have 5 shirts where the zipper pull is broken but the front of the pull is what broke. There is no way to insert a replacement device. Do you have a suggestion?

If you watch a bunch of the zipper repair videos out there, you will probably find one that will help you figure out a way to do it. Does the zipper have top stops or bottom stops? Is this a coat, or pants, or something else?????

Make sure there isn't something jamming the lock, like trash. But, usually it means the lock inside the slider is broken. Unfortunately, the sliders are almost impossible to take apart. You will need to find a similar zipper. Remove the stops and slider from the new zipper. Remove either the top stops or the bottom stop on your old zipper and replace the slider. Then replace the stops.
If you are talking about using a soldering iron, I don't think so. The heat would melt the plastic parts that the slider is touching (unless you removed it first). And the solder probably wouldn't stick.
Great videos, but how to fix the starter post in the bottom of a coat zipper, it almost came off and is hanging on a thread and it is very difficult to insert the starter post into the slider.
Does your zipper only have one pull (like a normal coat zipper) or does it have two pulls (like a parka zipper)? If it is a normal coat zipper, that is called a box and pin. I haven't seen anyone sell the box by itself. Only thing I have found that sometimes works is to remove the box and glue the bottom pull/slider off of a matching parka zipper. But it isn't the easiest thing to do and doesn't work as well as the original box. Best of luck to you.
fixpro256 thanks of getting back. Much appreciated. the zipper has only one slider. And the part you call pin is metallic and it is almost torn apart from its fabric-like base. The pin has channel and is it possible to attach or glue a patch base? Or something in this regard？
You could try cutting a pin and the fabric part it is made onto (call tape) off of another similar zipper. Glue it on the back of the existing zipper. I have not tried this. Even if it works, it will probably not work well. May be worth a shot before you pay someone to replace the entire zipper.
I have a similar problem with a jacket, and can't find a starter post that sells separately from a zipper pull. I also got a zipper pull for another jacket, but don't know how to install it as it is made to attach to another zipper pull, if you know what I'm saying. It is usually mainly used for ascetic purposes but in my case I want to attach it to a broken pull like the one in your video. I just don't know how to open it in order to put it thru the hole on the pull. It sounds like you have 2 different issues? I will make a separate comment for each. I have not been able to find the pin and box sold individually to repair a zipper. You will have to find a similar zipper, pull the pin off, run a fine tooth hacksaw (or similar) blade thru the groove to cut the crimp and old fabric out. Then cut the old pin off, but try to salvage as much of the old material as possible. Use adhesive like goop or e6000 to stop the fray and rebuild the fabric. Let that dry for a day. Then glue the pin on using the same adhesive. I plan to do a video on this, but it could be months before I get it done. Good luck.
My husband's nice leather jacket has this type of autolock slider. He doesn't want to have a paperclip on his leather jacket, so he bought a new pull tab. I like the jump ring (key ring) as a possible attachment for the pull tab, but it's kind of big. I tried a smaller ring like that but it seems too small to make the slider unlock. Would it be better to replace the slider altogether?
It is better to replace the slider, but a lot more trouble. Another option is to go to a craft store and buy something to attach to the slide with the "C" links/crimps that jewelers use to attach clasp to chains. Just don't tighten the "C" link down too much. There are all kinds things in craft stores that you can use, like little skulls, or whatever your husband is in to.
fixpro256 luckily I discovered a goody at the fabric store. It has a hinged connector already attached to a pull tab that was satisfactory. 2 minute fix! Wanted to post a picture for others but that seems to be not allowed. It's a makeitcoats.com product.

@@diegogarcia-ud7ii You will need to remove the stops, if any. Remove the stitching at the bottom where the two sides are joined (like the bottom of a pants zipper). Remove the slide and separate the two zipper sides. Then you'll need to go to a fabric store and try to find a zipper with a similar slide (can be a short zipper length). Then you can feed the new slide on and stitch or glue/adhesive the areas where you had to remove stitching. Good luck. I have a video that may help with removing stops. True. I do that too. It can save you a trip to the store and sometimes it's hard to find the kind you need in a store.

I haven't seen one that you can replace. They usually break when you pull the bridge off. If I remember correctly, they are spot welded or fused onto the slider. But, if you have a new slider that you are getting ready to install, it would be worth a shot to see if you could get the bridge off of the broken slider first. If you can, then you may stand a chance of doing the bridge swap.

I don't think you can remove the lock from most zippers, but you may be able to use a pull with a larger diameter than the original so it will always keep the lock disengaged.
I have two jackets with zipper tabs that I want to remove from the sliders. I want to place a tab on the other jacket. I know I could change the sliders but they and the teeth on the jackets are different from each other. Changing the tabs seems like the best option but I don't know how.
The tab attaches to the slider by going thru the hole in the crown.
Most crowns are attached at both ends and are very hard to remove without destroying the slider. On that style, usually the only way to get the tabs off is to cut the tab. But then you have to weld/solder it back together once it's on the new slider. Some sliders have a solid metal crown that can be bent out using a small screwdriver as a wedge. Then the tab can be slipped off. Then bend the new slider crown out to slip the tab on and bend the crown back. But, many sliders are made of cheap metal and it may break easily when you try to bend it out. A good idea to buy some cheap ones and practice a few times first. They also make some aftermarket tabs that can be installed on most crowns.

Interesting. I've never seen a crown come loose without major damage to the zipper. But I am definitely no expert on zippers. You may be able to find a similar zipper on ebay, amazon, or a thrift store with old clothes that you can steal parts off of. Can practice on zippers that are similar but not a perfect match. But I haven't had any luck taking crowns off. Usually screws them up too bad to reuse. If you give up on replacing the crown, you will have to replace the slide instead. Good luck. If you are talking about the u-shaped piece that is crimped onto the slider, No. I haven't been able to figure a way to do that. But you can replace the slider.

I want to put a DOUBLE or split heavy duty jump ring on my jacket but the head is too thick. You know how zipper heads are. Is there any way to get a charm onto the end? I thought a jump ring but that's not working. Thank you
If it's on a jacket, it probably has a lock built into it. So you have to have a little slack or the ring will release the lock all the time and the zipper will unzip when you're walking around. I don't know how small they make jump rings or key rings. But they get pretty small. At sail shops like West Marine, they have stainless steel rings (kind of like a key ring) used to rig sail equipment. Then you can attach any of the small charms you find at the hobby shops, or online.

They are usually crimped on in a way that mangles it when you try to remove that piece. I even tried with a really large zipper and didn't have much luck. Sorry

Depending on the type of zipper, usually you can just use a dab of adhesive on the back of the zipper fabric to keep the slide from coming off again.

Hook???? Are you talking about the crown (the part of the slide that forms the hole that the pull attaches to), or the hook under the crown of the slide that is found on a locking slide? Either way, I have never found a way to fix those parts. You will probably have to replace the slide by removing the stops at the top or bottom of the zipper tape (the material with the teeth made onto it)

It will as long as the pull isn't too thick where it goes thru the hole. If it's too thick, it'll keep the lock disengaged and you zipper will keep unzipping on it's own. Could be embarrassing ;-)

So I can't replace a missing pull piece with another one without breaking the whole thing? My zipper slider looks just like yours, the crown opens up a bit when I pull the pull piece. I hoped there is a way to somehow unlock the slider's crown, cause I have a nice pull piece to put to good use. Although to use a keyring is a pretty clever idea. I have previopusly already put a standard paper clip, it's nice, but not hard enough, so it often deforms when I pull.
Hi Jetto, Try googling zipper pull replacement. There are a few that split in half and then lock around the crown piece. There are also some made of string but they may not work well with a locking zipper that is usually used on clothes. The hobby shops may have some options in the jewelry making section.
@@fixpro256 Thanks, it looks like the crown has an opening mechanism, that gets stuck by desing when trying to force it open. almost like a car's hood, when it's not fully closed. seems it's going to open a bit but it doesn't, it seems physically impossible, because of the two shapes are made to interlock, to remain stuck.
That sounds kind of like a locking slider. It has a spring loaded point that sticks into the teeth of the zipper when you aren't pulling on it.
Can you move the slider if you put something like a paperclip thru the crown and gently pull out while trying to move the slider?
@@fixpro256 yes, I have a paperclip now inserted into the crown, instead of the pull piece. I tried to pull it up while moving the slider up and down, it was still sliding just as before, so there was no blocking. Oh by the way this slider is located on a Full-Zip Sweatshirt by Lee Jeans, so it's not a small one. I wish I could find the exact picture, but no luck so far.
Hi Jetto, I'm not sure I understand the problem. It sounds like you have a standard large clothes zipper. It locks when you aren't pulling on it, and unlocks when you pull on it. That way you can unzip when you pull the zipper but it doesn't come unzipped by itself. It sounds like all you need to do is replace the zipper pull. Am I not understanding the problem???
I have 5 shirts where the zipper pull is broken but the front of the pull is what broke. There is no way to insert a replacement device. Do you have a suggestion?

If you watch a bunch of the zipper repair videos out there, you will probably find one that will help you figure out a way to do it. Does the zipper have top stops or bottom stops? Is this a coat, or pants, or something else?????

wondering what the fix is, if the zipper and pull are intact, but it won't lock in place, and therefore keeps opening by itself.
Make sure there isn't something jamming the lock, like trash. But, usually it means the lock inside the slider is broken. Unfortunately, the sliders are almost impossible to take apart. You will need to find a similar zipper. Remove the stops and slider from the new zipper. Remove either the top stops or the bottom stop on your old zipper and replace the slider. Then replace the stops.

If you are talking about using a soldering iron, I don't think so. The heat would melt the plastic parts that the slider is touching (unless you removed it first). And the solder probably wouldn't stick.
Great videos, but how to fix the starter post in the bottom of a coat zipper, it almost came off and is hanging on a thread and it is very difficult to insert the starter post into the slider.
Does your zipper only have one pull (like a normal coat zipper) or does it have two pulls (like a parka zipper)? If it is a normal coat zipper, that is called a box and pin. I haven't seen anyone sell the box by itself. Only thing I have found that sometimes works is to remove the box and glue the bottom pull/slider off of a matching parka zipper. But it isn't the easiest thing to do and doesn't work as well as the original box. Best of luck to you.
fixpro256 thanks of getting back. Much appreciated. the zipper has only one slider. And the part you call pin is metallic and it is almost torn apart from its fabric-like base. The pin has channel and is it possible to attach or glue a patch base? Or something in this regard？
You could try cutting a pin and the fabric part it is made onto (call tape) off of another similar zipper. Glue it on the back of the existing zipper. I have not tried this. Even if it works, it will probably not work well. May be worth a shot before you pay someone to replace the entire zipper.
I have a similar problem with a jacket, and can't find a starter post that sells separately from a zipper pull. I also got a zipper pull for another jacket, but don't know how to install it as it is made to attach to another zipper pull, if you know what I'm saying. It is usually mainly used for ascetic purposes but in my case I want to attach it to a broken pull like the one in your video. I just don't know how to open it in order to put it thru the hole on the pull. It sounds like you have 2 different issues? I will make a separate comment for each. I have not been able to find the pin and box sold individually to repair a zipper. You will have to find a similar zipper, pull the pin off, run a fine tooth hacksaw (or similar) blade thru the groove to cut the crimp and old fabric out. Then cut the old pin off, but try to salvage as much of the old material as possible. Use adhesive like goop or e6000 to stop the fray and rebuild the fabric. Let that dry for a day. Then glue the pin on using the same adhesive. I plan to do a video on this, but it could be months before I get it done. Good luck.
My husband's nice leather jacket has this type of autolock slider. He doesn't want to have a paperclip on his leather jacket, so he bought a new pull tab. I like the jump ring (key ring) as a possible attachment for the pull tab, but it's kind of big. I tried a smaller ring like that but it seems too small to make the slider unlock. Would it be better to replace the slider altogether?
It is better to replace the slider, but a lot more trouble. Another option is to go to a craft store and buy something to attach to the slide with the "C" links/crimps that jewelers use to attach clasp to chains. Just don't tighten the "C" link down too much. There are all kinds things in craft stores that you can use, like little skulls, or whatever your husband is in to.
fixpro256 luckily I discovered a goody at the fabric store. It has a hinged connector already attached to a pull tab that was satisfactory. 2 minute fix! Wanted to post a picture for others but that seems to be not allowed. It's a makeitcoats.com product.

@@diegogarcia-ud7ii You will need to remove the stops, if any. Remove the stitching at the bottom where the two sides are joined (like the bottom of a pants zipper). Remove the slide and separate the two zipper sides. Then you'll need to go to a fabric store and try to find a zipper with a similar slide (can be a short zipper length). Then you can feed the new slide on and stitch or glue/adhesive the areas where you had to remove stitching. Good luck. I have a video that may help with removing stops.
