I am not a guitarist, but I want to learn this to play it for my wife who adores this song. It will be an uphill battle, but I will get there eventually. What a great and generous video.
FINALLY someone did it properly in standard tuning! I hate switching tuning, more often than not it just makes me skip the song. It's not exactly how it's played originally but it's more than good enough. Awesome lesson for one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. Thank you.
Good job. For me, a beginner who has no interest in becoming a pro, I just want the campfire version and this is perfect. Justin’s version that you reference is very good too but, like many here have said, I don’t want to bother with changing tuning and the difficulty level is a little much for me yet. Thanks for this beginner version
Literally me ! Watched Justin teach the Dire Strait way and I was like damn this is gonna be tough. Now here I am and already know how to play it just watching you 😂
Thanks man. Not sure why people are quibbling in the comments. As you said it's available in alternate tuning on other channels. Also with the intro it's very easy to complicate up your great simple version. The buskers and backroom guitarists of the world salute you. (-:
Thank you David, you legend you. I have always wanted to play this song but having all these change of tuning to G tuning has turned me right off. Thank you Romeo.......you have given me light at the end of the tunnel.
This is a cool standard tuning way of playing this. A tip though, if you fome the A7 using your 1st and 3rd finger then from the A7 you simply slide your 3rd finger from the C sharp to the D (one fret) then you can form the G chord using 1st finger and 3rd. also a simple slide is easier to land ;) , all in all a great little lesson. Hope that makes sense.
Trry tuning your guitar to G, capo on 3rd fret, and watch someone who plays it right, but for the beginner this is far better than barring ya 5th fret and a C shape.....Nice one 👍🏻
Your explanation of the chord progressions were fantastic- I've always gotten lost in this song but you've shown just how simple it is. Thanks so much, excellent video!
David this is a brilliant lesson for a beginner/intermediate guitarist, i have wanted to play this for years and given up many times. This lesson has really inspired me to try and play this again and i am sure this time i will succeed. Thank you so much for this simplified version, best tutorial, great lesson, thank you. Chris
I’m learning the bass line to this song and although probably not intending to provide a bass lesson this is a fantastic resource/tutorial-Thank you and more like this please especially the chord charts.
Thanks a lot, really clear lesson and very useful if you are looking for a more standard tuning friendly version :) One thing I realized and could be helpful for beginners struggling to quickly finger barre chords (like me): If you transpose the whole thing a fifth lower (so D -> G, A -> D, etc.), the chords are G, D, Em, C, Am. Which makes it a bit easier for your fretting hand. But that's a fun trick to do in general: whenever you want to learn something but your fingers aren't ready for the shapes yet: nothing stops you from transposing it to something a bit easier. You'll need to learn a bit of music theory for this, but it's just the basic stuff (although you'll notice how useful this will be). And if you want it to sound well together with the original track (or other musicians or whatever), you can use a capo to compensate for the change in key. It won't work in all cases (don't bother trying it with fancy jazz chords ;)), but a lot of songs follow the same kind of patterns and chord progressions. For example this song has chords I, IV, V, vi (and a bit of ii), which I'd dare to say covers more than 95% of all pop songs :)
Excellent tutorial. I dont want to mess around to retune my guitar since i play other songs also on my guitar. So this was what i was looking for. Thanks👍👍
It's been a while since I picked my guitar up and a while longer before that, but I love this song and I had a great time making my hands hurt again to this. Thankyou.
I find it easier to play the g chord on the intro with my ring finger... also your fingers actually do practice in your sleep (well, at least the brain part of your fingers) but this is a little known fact about the wonders that sleep does for learning! Check out "Why we sleep" by Mathew Walker for more info on that
Can anyone tell me how to play that lick after the 1st verse please? It’s played in the intro to this video but the video cuts away from the playing and it’s not covered in the video or the pdf

Practice maybe something easier and move onto this Its a little tricky if u want to play it like Mark
@@upgoyxtirzruz i wana know also!!!
Get it in your car and sing along endlessly until you have memorized. Do that independently of the guitar stuff.
@@philg594 this isn't like Mr knofler
Heyo, how is it going with the song?
FINALLY someone did it properly in standard tuning! I hate switching tuning, more often than not it just makes me skip the song. It's not exactly how it's played originally but it's more than good enough.
Awesome lesson for one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. Thank you.
I thought I was the only one who doesn’t like changing tuning for different songs
Thanks!
You’re so very welcome! Glad it’s helpful. Thanks to you for the kind tip!!

Thank you, David. Folk like yourself and Justin sharing music, how to play. :)

I forgot to mention, you have a wonderful voice David also.
Thanks for this. Does anyone know why Knopfler didn't use standard tuning for this song? What does re-tuning add to the piece?
Absolutely brilliant in standard tuning as most guitarists like me hate having to refer to alternate tuning. Loved it
Exactly. Simplified songs aren’t just for beginners, especially when it comes to easing tuning changes.

Best Guitar teacher ever!!! Thanks😊😊😊🎸🔥👍
Hi Dave, this is a phenomenal lesson for this difficult song. Thank you so much.
Thanks a lot, really clear lesson and very useful if you are looking for a more standard tuning friendly version :)
One thing I realized and could be helpful for beginners struggling to quickly finger barre chords (like me):

And as an extra bonus if you're super lazy: transposed to G you can play it with "sticky fingers" on the high B & E strings :)
Great song, great lesson! Thanks so much! You are a great teacher!
You are great teacher thankyou so easy to understand

Meraviglioso tutorial grazie 💞
Is there any way you can show the little lick between verse 1 and 2? I think it’s 5 notes. Excellent video!
beautifully done. Thank you..
Great explanation... works for me, thnx
Can anyone tell me how to play that lick after the 1st verse please? It’s played in the intro to this video but the video cuts away from the playing and it’s not covered in the video or the pdf
Did you find out how to play it? :)
@@robinsward1747 nope. I thought I'd figured it out because I have the sheet music for it for piano but still doesn't sound right
Ah man, thank you thank you thankyou!!!!
Nice work, thank you very much,, sounds good for me.
Very nice. Thank you.
Thank You U Rawk!
Yes that's nice, it can easily play this time, everytime I see more video they play with a capo and a drop chord which is not ok to ruin guitar tuning
great
Uffff, tank you 😀
WoW! Thanks!
