I found my true Romeo when I was 25, but he was already taken. After 5 devastating years we realized and accepted one can't built your happiness on someone else's heartbreak. So we went our seperate routes. I'll be 63 this year, after almost 40 years I still remember and cherish our every ❤ moment spend together❤ ❤

The song lends itself completely to the fragility of his aging voice, it shows how timeless the narrative is and the line "ill love you till i die" . That comes one day for all of us.

Saw Knopfler in Belfast years ago....the stage fell into darkness, he was sitting with a steel guitar on his lap and a spot light from the back was shinning on him....he reflected the beam around the theater and audience... The place was in silence and then he struck up with the start of Romeo and Juliet.!!!! The place fucking erupted......

Hi, I first listened to this song when I was 10 years old, I was pretending I was a ballerina dancing about the lounge area in the children’s home at the time. This was my first musical experience. We were never encouraged to listen to music,or anything else for that matter, we were the unwanted children of an era where if you were conceived out of wedlock you were taken away from your parents, adopted,if you were lucky. But for me, a sentence from hell within an institution ( children’s home). This song that I happened to hear on the radio, just once , was my saviour in believing that there was something beautiful, creative, something more than the misery I experienced at that particular time going on in the world outside, from then on, I promised myself that I would sing, play, write, to all of the other children and give them a sense of comfort. Iam a Nurse now, I still sing to patients and still see the profound effects that music can bring to people of all ages and backgrounds. Thanks Mark.🙏

The best part of this particular version to me is that he leaves out the verse where Juliets dreams come true and she leaves Romeo. In that verse she falls for chains of silver and she falls for chains of gold... and pretty strangers with the promised they told. Leaving this verse out seems to make the song more poignant and reflective... an old man remembering his life, keeping the good and forgetting the bad... really amazing stuff...

"And all I do is miss you"....how his voice breaks when he sings that line.
This is such a beautiful song, heartfelt.
When it came out, I was making a total mess of my life at 18. I met my Juliet, but couldn't get her to be mine. Yet.
I turned my life around a year later, and we got together.
We have been married for 35 years now, and this song just brings me to tears. So beautiful. So thankful.

A few minutes ago my 6 year old granddaughter asked her rumored to be terminal GP, "how old are you?" "64 - "65 in a few months." I saw the thumbnail and asked her if she wanted to hear one of the best guitar players ever?
She kind of watched while Papa told her something like, " my best friend told me about this singer and group when I was in my last year of high school. '76, lets see 24 and 22 -- 46 years. He has been doing this all that time, and he's made me happy so many times - wonderful..."
And by then I was choking and tearing up and having trouble talking to her as much as getting lost in my heart honoring what Mark and these guys gifts have meant to me... Thanks

For some weird reason (I wasn't listening to any music at the time) last night I was thinking about how outstanding Mr Knopfler's work is. What's amazing is that if you ignore the fact that the music is sensational and how well he plays, and then just look at the lyrics - he really puts together some sweet lines and tells amazing stories. Songs like this and Telegraph Road for example, do not need videos - it's like reading a good book, the lyrics and music help your imagination create the scenes in your head. Rock on MK, looking forward to the new album!

Had just bought the Walkman on the Ginza - and got Making Movies and Eagles Greatest hits as my two new cassettes to get me back to the US. I had never heard music this clear before - and the finger snap made me laugh - as I felt like I was in the studio. I loved the song before it was over - and I've never stopped loving it.
