You had that SPL meter set on the A weighted scale, which intentionally filters out lower frequencies. That setting is used for measuring sound levels from machinery in factories. If that meter has a C weighting, that's what should be used for low frequencies. If that meter does not have C weighting....get another meter.

No hate here, just some info to help steer you in the future. Do more research in the future before downing any subwoofer. Not that you actively put down Kicker but the tests you did were not a fair test of either. The box you use needs to be tailored to the subwoofer you use. I didn't pull up the T/S parameters for those but I guarantee you they are very different. Your box was likely too far off for what's ideal for the Kicker in order to perform well. The Skar probably was closer, hence why it sounded better. Turns out what's better for you and your setup is the Skar. That said, this wasn't not a good comparison and the results should not steer anyone towards or away from either product. Best wishes moving forward and have fun with audio. I agree I went from a JL AUDIO W6 to the Kicker Q class 10 inch round it sounds better than that sub. My son has skar in his car off a Rockford AMP it sounds good but not better than a Q class Round. I had a box built for both to exact specs.
@@Adetokunbo03 The problem is this guy is comparing the Comp Q which is kicker's newest top of the line model when the skar SDR is lower to mid range for Skar. @adamtx214 I ran a single SDR 12 at 1ohm on the 1200 and it took all the juice without a problem. It was impressive for as cheap as it was. I am now running a Audio Control 1.800 Amp to 2 JL Audio 10w1v3 subs in a jl stealtbox. The audio control/Jl is way cleaner. The Skar has way more forceful bass.
@@dbanks8995 so your telling me that if i put 1500 watts on a 1500 watt rms sub that if i turn the volume down so that the voltage output of 1500 drops to 200 that it is going to sound different. maybe it sounds different because it is louder?? then i understand what you mean, but noo it will not change the sound of the sub by running less power. it will still preform exactly the same but at different levels of percieved output. now if you start to clip that amp then yes the sound will change. but i will stick to my statement that power does not dictate how the sub will sound, untill you either exceed sub xmax or clip the crap out of the amp.
This is a bad comparison. Comp q vs the vxf or atleast the evl.. both sq subs with alittle spl. The sdr is a is only rated for 600 watts rms, 970z motor and a 2inch coil

I'm currently on my 4th set of L7:s in a year. 1st set blew in 2 weeks. 2nd set in 1 month. Baby sitter em for 6 mos and still they blew. These last 2 replacements are now being used indoors as house speakers where I can baby sit em and check if they're hot easily. I replaced em with the Skar SDR 10s and after they broke in they hit harder and lower than the kickers and I can abuse them. I abused them purposely to see if they would get hot and after hours of being overpowered they are never hot and have already outlasted the L7s. Kicker has that warranty for a reason and instead of spending all their money on all of these marketers, kicker should spend that on better subs. I feel like a wasted over $600 on these L7's and if anyone wants em just reply and I'll give you a great deal on em. I still have the boxes lol (that shows I'm worried they will blow) Skar boxes have been discarded. Still have all receipts and proof of when they were sent to me (02/2024) never again. If you're stuck with a box that only takes L7, ak sound has cutouts that convert them to circles so that you can get out of that l7 trap.
I bought two skars 8 inch subwoofer 400 watts each. They actually perform very good, I paid about 100 dollars each. The only thing is that they only lasted me about 3 years. Where with kicker l7 I had them for over 6 years or more.
Love the fact you took the time to do this but you just passed on a sub that will kill that skar if you put it in the right box per specs. That is everything to any sub regardless of brand and cost. Now if the decision is based on the box you have then I get it but that compq has a killer low end when in the right box.
Have a comp q 12 on a ct sounds 1000.1 d in a 2.7 box ported at 30 hz.. it smashes the lows so hard i have worried about breaking shit. But it is insane. For q 12 inch sub and it takes that 900 to 1000 all day
If you spend on a Skar sub what you do on Kicker the difference will be huge. (Skar amps are trash) I have a single 12" Skar EVL on a Down4Sound JP13 ,that is a little small really, in the correct box (the box is also wrong for the Skar he has) and it's great. Box, amp, and wiring is every bit as important as the sub you choose. I've made trash sound great with professionally built boxes and quality amps set up correctly.
Made the switch from an old Comp RT10 Kicker to the Skar 10", night and day difference. I spent the better part of a month breaking in the kicker when it was new, I was dreading breaking the new one in. But, it sounds amazing out of the box. Hit's just as hard (if not harder) and the lows are enough to make my eyeballs vibrate. Couldn't be happier with a 90 dollar sub honestly.
Everyone needs to understand power dynamics and frequency response when it comes to comparing speakers. The ported boxes im almost sure was tuned to a certain frequency which will give an advantage to one speaker vs the other. You're putting 600 watts and 700 watts against each other using the same power source with out adjusting anything. The smaller rms will always sound louder in that scenario being it takes less power to push it. Long story short if you are looking for a certain sound do the math and research to pair the right things together.
Speaker sensitivity plays the biggest factor since same box and same amp. I'm sure the skar has higher db/watt sensitivity that's why it sounded louder or the box is tuned closer to the speakers specs not because it takes less power to push it. If I hook up a 200rms sub and a 1000rms sub to a 1000 watt amp the 1000 rms sub will be louder.
I run a $60 SKAR 8" 2ohm and it HITS in the Jeep!!! I made sure I changed the speaker phase to get the maximum bass frequency and it rumbles nicely. A lot nicer than the stock Infinity 8" that was in the Jeep. SKAR is making a serious statement in the sub game. Folks are sleeping on em!
@@zaingunter4596 depends on your setup. You don't always have to. On my setup, I had to. You will know based on the head unit you install and how each phase sounds. Put it on the phase you prefer, based on how you like your bass to hit. It's all in the setup, so can't predict if you will swap yours or not.
@@zaingunter4596 a lot of times when people mount their sub inverted , like he did here with the Kicker sub , they reverse the polarity so it makes it basically hit the same as if the sub was mounted normally Inside the box . hope that helped ?!! But there are many more reasons to switch polarity than just my example .
Thump vs punch, I think the star has a slightly bigger foam surround so it has more travel, the q10 I think is designed for more technical tracks or to be used with a dsp and good component speakers to "fill" out the soundstage
You don’t have to run a wire underneath Tj speaker just take the leads you have connected to the box and connect directly to the sub and I have heard both in 12inch variants the kicker blows it away you depends on amplifier you are using
In 2002, I had two 12in Kicker Comp Vrs(black face) in a sealed box on a 1200 Class D amp wired at 1Ω with an external Cadence crossover. Pioneer head unit and Optima Yellow Top for the whole car. NO CAPACITOR!!! My car was a 95 Caprice! It hit so hard, if you sat in the backseat, you would lose your breath. If you had asthma, guaranteed to get an asthma attack.
You can't just compare the kicker comp Q's and the Skar SDR's bro they're no where near the same level Comp Q being kicker's top of the line and Skar SDR being lower to mid range. The kicker Comp VR or Comp R is what you need to compare with the sdr. Or you could do the Skar EVL or ZVX and the Comp Q.
I bought the skar 12” single sub package with the 800 watt rms amp. I am shocked at how good it sounds and how hard it hits. I would definitely buy more of their products in the future. It doesn’t compare to the last system I had. It’s a terrible comparison since that system was 3 alpine type r 12’s in a custom box and an old school kicker zx1000. When I sell my car and get my truck I’m moving my skar equipment over.
I found Skar to be a better Boom for the buck, too! Caught me off guard as well! Had mine for almost a year and they still beat hard. I liked how you were honest. And as far as beauty. I thought the way "Skar" written in Gothic Form on the dust cap was super hard.
Agree. I have my brothers set of 12 inch skars 2400watt package. I got a NVX XAD 16. 8000watt. As of now with a 350 amp alt and a agm battery. Vehicle runs out a juice before the skars blow. Getting another battery soon and go from there. I am impressed with the sound of the skars. Like a MAJOR step up compared say Mtx terminator as far as bolt and go's. Perfect for budget systems.
The SDR is only their entry-level sub for $89 basically a starter sub if you would have got a any other star sub over $200 like evl it would have destroyed Kicker sub
Show me a sound quality system that uses Skar subs. I'll wait. Skar is diy company with rebranded subs that moves allot of air but use them for what they are intended. Loud SPL etc. That's what their for. Period. Even they would agree on that. Period
I have always been a fan of Kicker, especially when I ran the (4 ) 15" Cvx and also (4) 15" Solo X's . But I have a better respect for the Skars, cuz I have had 3 builds with EVL's , Ddv, and also the Zx series. All were 12", and I had a better build , experience and less spent on the builds. Plus I use them as an split build and daily driver. The skars are better overall, and better for the pocket and piece of mind

Place the kicker into a box that will handle that sub facing the other way, or you can run the phase reverse so the speaker works properly in the box up side down.
You should mount them the same way for your test and you might get a better sound for the kicker the real test is long term and the kicker should last longer it is what it is paper vs plastic cone
Hey man thank you for posting this video. It gives many people a learning opportunity. I could point out quite a few experimental flaws in the video but I'll keep it educational. 1) The red part your're referring to is called the spider and it's a second suspension, which also help to keep the voice-coil aligned in the gap. 2) Reverse-mounting a subwoofer removes the speaker displacement from the internal volume of the enclosure, thereby lowering the tuning frequency. 3) Never buy speakers with plastic diaphragms (cones). They are weak, and prone to resonant peaks and cone distortion at high excursion. Paper cones offer lightweight, rigid diaphragms with excellent natural dampening. 4) Speakers with attention to cosmetics are gimmicks. Form follows function and flash is trash. Don't be fooled by a price tag. I don't own any Skar subs, but between Kicker and Skar, the choice is easy. Good call there.
I don't see you getting on stage. Good job man no hate. You want to hear how consumers feel about both products. He said skar is the best for your budget.
well sure, skar makes some great subs and there are some very heavy hitters at 15" and 18", but these are 10's in a very improper box and skar is more about value with the smaller subs, this is really an unfair comparison. using a cheap plate amp from parts express with an EVL-65 is probably the best diy home theater system you can get but i wouldn't expect any of their 8's to go toe to toe with an 8" q class, even if the ZVX-8 isn't misrepresented in RMS power i still think it would have a hard time beating out the kicker for power and sound quality.
That kicker is a way better sub. Once broken in it'll be louder. The spider is stiffer compared to the soft suspension on the skar. Put both in the optimum enclosure and then do the test.
The only thing I don't like so far on the skars is the screw holes on the basket don't line up with the holes on the rubber on the top. So taking the screws out your pulling the rubber upwards

How do you think this is even close to a fair comparison? The 2nd woofer didn’t fit in the box You didn’t have it sealed. They had different airspace. Your decibel meter probably doesn’t go over 114. You were shoving the mic into the speaker. You can play sine waves with no music to test in the vehicle. Port noise and SPL are 2 different things. Pretty sure I forgot 2 other things wrong with this comparison while I typed these out. Sheesh
These subs aren't similar at all. The Kicker does have more. If you had 4-6 Sdr vs the 4-6 Kicker, the Kicker would win in Spl. I have 2 Skar vxf 12s, but it is a whole different level than the Sdr. Something might be wrong with the way you set it up.
This isn't even close! The Kicker is much nicer. And yes, that's real stitching. Not cheaply made. There's no way you can judge sound on these headphones, though. If that Kicker was mounted right, it wouldn't even be close. It would thump a lot more than you think.
In a good box and proper setup a CompQ will shit on a SDR all day long, but it's hard to beat the SDR cuz of how cheap they are, it's all but a $200 difference in price. For the price of 1 CompQ you can get 3 SDR's and 3 subs are better than 1 🤙🤙
@@kammarh1 so in order to do an accurate comparison, you would have needed to put each sub in their recommended enclosure and if you are going to put the sub inverted, it would be better to put the speaker wire that was coming from the amp to the speaker instead of using the wire in the box. also fyi the comp q is better suited for sq not spl like the skar subs, the comp q is a better rival to the jl that you took out .
Skar started in 2006 they bairly got experience while kicker started in the 1960 or 1970s kicker has much hire quality and wayyyyyyyy much better than skar only the ogs will know
Question: Is the Kicker brand new out the box? If so, is this your first time playing it? I ask because what a lot of people don’t know about Kicker subs, is that they have to go through a break-in period. Straight out the box, they’re not going to sound their best. Trust me, once they’ve reached their break-in period, the bass is much deeper and more crisp.
The maximum wattage is normally twice the RMS although maximum or Peak means absolutely nothing I don't know what you need that specification for the only one that really counts is the RMS that's why the kicker has that rating because it's a legitimate Honest Company that's been around much longer than Skar guaranteed no matter which one you pick and I did not watch the video yet the Skar will not last as long.
You didn’t do the kicker comp q no justice bro. That speaker is top of the line and performs beyond its means, and to make it even worse you had it in the box upside down🤦🏾♂️. I have comp q 12’s and they bang bang “ No 🧢”
Lol kicker is no where near top of the line 😂... I'm not understanding because for the past 10 years there have been brands that have put jl audio, kicker, ect to shame at a fraction of the price. Skar, audioque/sq audio, skar, sundown, deaf bonce, CT sounds, and I could go on and on... You are literally paying double for kicker because of their advertising cost! These other brands do not have to advertise! So why spend double on Chinese crap from kicker just for their subs to be put to shame by many, many other brands that cost hundreds less? And some are even made in the US. Car audio changed years ago man.. It's time to realize that kicker, jl audio, Rockford, ect are NOT the top choices anymore and never will be again. Do you realize that for the price of this locker comp q you could get a skar evl 12 that would destroy the kicker? Same price.... Wake up
The kicker needs to be in a much larger box and needs a lot more power to show this as a proper comparison. I'm willing to bet that box was perfect for the Skar.......
If inverting sub (motor side out), it should be wired out of phase. If anything is gained from inverting subs, it's due to the added volume in the enclosure. (Not losing any volume that the frame and motor would displace, if inside)
why you would you put it out of phase?? better yet how do you wire out of phase? phase is set by your amplifier if it even has the feature. I have 2 Resilient Sounds platinum 15's and they're inverted wired to 1 ohm on an MD8k. they are wired the same way as they were when they were mounted normally
I think they meant wired backwards, as in positive coming from the amp going to negative of the sub, and neg from amp to pos of sub. I've heard that also but never knew how true it was but have been told by old timers that I've if your going to run the sub backwards like that, you need to reserve your polarities so that it's pushing and not pulling or vice-versa, ive never known how true that is or isn't though... but have always wondered myself actually..
There’s no way that Skar sounds better at all.. maybe if you’d get a custom box built to each sub and did a review after you’d have a way different opinion. That kicker is being choked in that prefab box and wasn’t getting a good seal.
Only reason would be if the kicker has lighter moving mass and a big spider. Robot Underground on UA-cam can tell you why. Skar does use aluminum formers on both copper and aluminum voicecoils.
Please get a bigger/better box. That box is absolutely garbage and is killing the possible sound/pound those subs could give you. They need 2.5cuft+ of airspace tuned at about 34hz. It will make a world of a difference and will sound 2x to 3x louder than it does in that box plus it will hit low bass hard as hell. The reason it's better to put those subs with the motors outside the box is because you are gaining air space because the subs aren't taking up much needed airspace that you can't afford to waste in that small of a box. Plus it will keep the coils cooler being outside the box and not trapped inside a box not being able to get cooler fresh air like it cam outside the box
Started in the 80's with Sparkomatic cassette radio with a Radio Shack eq/power booster and Pioneer speakers and a dual sub that a friend and I built for the back of my 1986 Honda Civic Si. We got some of the biggest speakers we could find then built a huge box, drilled a hole for a port and we were rockin! LMAO Have gradually upgraded over the decades and have used everything and anything. Have been using Kicker since around 2008 and doubt I will change. No distortion at high level in my modern Si.
LMAO! I remember my Radio Shack subs in the late 80’s! I was in Vo-Tech carpentry class that I built an awesome enclosure for (2) Radio Shack 15” subs w/ AlphaSonic 200/w amp (100x2) in my Honda Civic hatchback and it seemed so loud for the time; everybody in school was amazed at my audio for 6x9s were popular in everybody’s ride . In 91’ for graduation present I got (2) Kicker 15” subs and a Hifonics Hercules (200wx1) and it was “pure power” and was hammering those 15’s back then. @ Mike Dav#BestofTimes#🔊
No substitute for real world experience. My first system was a Motorola 8-track about the size of a small briefcase that I strategically mounted under the dash in an old Dodge charger. I had that rare mixture of triaxials, coaxials and whizzer cones,, a total of 7,,and don't you know I had all of them hooked up. No telling what kind of a crazy ohm load I was pushing. King of the world when I hooked up that Craig power play.
The only way to compare is to mount both the same way? Why did you run the wires under the kicker inside the box instead of running straight to the amp? The kicker would smash the skar if tested by a professional.
I love my 2 10 and 12 inch skar subs I used atrend boxes but cut a round 12 inch hole in all three boxes and made them passive radiator subs using earthquake 12 inch passives . I ended up putting them in my bedroom. my neighbors don't really like me anymore. the bass is so deep and powerful. And they don't have to be loud
Put the kicker with a properly rated amp and it will sound perfect kickers are known for handling more than rated power On an even playing field the star would definitely catch fire while the kicker would be going strong
No hate man that kicker Q series is out of that skars league, atrend boxes are ok but they run small on most subs. Also that skar will burn coil if you bang it for time and kicker Q series would outlast on higher wattage. Tbh not a fan of either only skar I like is the DNR and kicker is more quality then spl. Great work on the video though
Pressed steel basket? That’s cast aluminum bruh. On the kicker I mean. And that comp Q is a very high quality speaker. It shouldn’t even be compared to a skar SDR. I’ve owned two SDR 15’s and they were garbage. I went to all the trouble of building I giant ass custom box that took three guys to load it into my trunk from inside the car with the back seat removed. What a let down on all my work. I have abused the kicker and tried to smoke the sub because I’ll be getting the new solo x this summer. The sub is one of the absolute best I own hands down. I’ll probably use it for my home theatre once I get the solo X

Good review but the kicker calls for a sealed non vented enclosure. I guarantee the kicker would slam harder with a different enclosure
Naw they need the extra large ported box will play deep and loud. I have had both and they do sound Amazing in a sealed box especially for a SQ setup
The kicker is not limited to a sealed enclosure... but you are right that a custom enclosure would make a world of a difference.
Ported is always better if it's built sub specific.

Run the wires thru the port so you get a good seal around the sub
good idea. i didn't think about doing that.
I I blew a 12-in kicker CompR 500 rms watts on a 600 watt mono kicker amp.kicker specs are dead on but I'm gonna go with skar svr 12 inch 800 rms sub.
Correct, maybe sealed enclosure would be better than this box since box is tuned for a certain speaker not every speaker.
Power handling and system sensitivity are not correlated the way you think they are.
Both subs are choking in that prefab encloser that entry level skar is no we’re near that Q class man
I run a $60 SKAR 8" 2ohm and it HITS in the Jeep!!! I made sure I changed the speaker phase to get the maximum bass frequency and it rumbles nicely. A lot nicer than the stock Infinity 8" that was in the Jeep. SKAR is making a serious statement in the sub game. Folks are sleeping on em!
Why would you have need to switch pahse
You don’t have to run a wire underneath Tj speaker just take the leads you have connected to the box and connect directly to the sub and I have heard both in 12inch variants the kicker blows it away you depends on amplifier you are using
Kickers usually require a complete sealed box, no ventilation, I have listened to 12 inch kickers sealed and vented and sealed is amazing.

Place the kicker into a box that will handle that sub facing the other way, or you can run the phase reverse so the speaker works properly in the box up side down.
Mounting a sub inverted doesn't necessarily mean it will be out of phase with the rest of the speakers in the system.
Get you a properly built and tuned box for your specific sub and you will get louder quality sound.
Not a fair test at all. Box requirements are different and you have the kicker mounted differently also. Retest correctly and try again.

I have two skar 15's. In total i spent less than $500 on the whole system and it has cracked my back glass more than once
well sure, skar makes some great subs and there are some very heavy hitters at 15" and 18", but these are 10's in a very improper box and skar is more about value with the smaller subs, this is really an unfair comparison. using a cheap plate amp from parts express with an EVL-65 is probably the best diy home theater system you can get but i wouldn't expect any of their 8's to go toe to toe with an 8" q class, even if the ZVX-8 isn't misrepresented in RMS power i still think it would have a hard time beating out the kicker for power and sound quality.
I used to love kicker. But seriously their new products sound like junk
Bass is weighted at differently, you need a dBC measurement not a dBA for an accurate measurement

Kicker is at least twice as good
These subs aren't similar at all. The Kicker does have more. If you had 4-6 Sdr vs the 4-6 Kicker, the Kicker would win in Spl. I have 2 Skar vxf 12s, but it is a whole different level than the Sdr. Something might be wrong with the way you set it up.
I have a vxf 12 in a big custom aero ported box and it gets real loud probably around 145db or even 150 it is the perfect single 12 setup for me
This isn't even close!

I got dual sdr 12s on a rp1200.1 wired to 1 ohm and I love it. Definitely amazing for the price.
Same here. Shit knockin pictures off the wall 💯
How is it lasting so far
People knock on plastic or polyprophylene cones but thats where sql really shines especially on high notes

I ended up putting them in my bedroom. my neighbors don't really like me anymore. the bass is so deep and powerful. And they don't have to be loud
Get that decibel meter out of that grill. It is not a cooking thermometer 🤒...
🤣🤣🤣🤣
You would be lucky to get anything to sound good in that box. I believe the tuning of that box is around 40 to 45 hz.
When I saw the way he had the kicker sitting on the outside of the box I almost fell over
That comp q would outlive that skar q0 times over take more power and have better lows by far. And it won't blow up I 2 months like that skar will
Yea then compare it to a skar at the same price
Put the kicker with a properly rated amp and it will sound perfect kickers are known for handling more than rated power
On an even playing field the star would definitely catch fire while the kicker would be going strong
$90 sub vs a $200 sub..no comparison.. just curious what amp are use using...
did u watch the video?
No hate man that kicker Q series is out of that skars league, atrend boxes are ok but they run small on most subs. Also that skar will burn coil if you bang it for time and kicker Q series would outlast on higher wattage. Tbh not a fan of either only skar I like is the DNR and kicker is more quality then spl. Great work on the video though
This is not a good comparison at all. You have a sub that cost 100 bucks vs one that is almost 400. At least compare with evl
once I saw the speaker mounted upside down with the wire going under the cone was done with this video
Yeah bad test
KICKERS Q HANDS DOWN BRO
I'm think of the 12" Q with the audio control 800.1 to replace my 2 solo 10's and kicker 1200.1
XFL 10 or 12 over both of these imo
If your entertaining the fact scar can compete with kicker you've already made your first mistake
Yeah for the price of that skar sub, would go up against comp c...kickers. hands down skar audio👌🏽
Kicker has stitched their woofer cones for decades.
Got a single L7 15” woofer and it’s a much better sub. Box had to be installed the same way and it’s been sitting there bolted down for over three years. I have abused the kicker and tried to smoke the sub because I’ll be getting the new solo x this summer. The sub is one of the absolute best I own hands down. I’ll probably use it for my home theatre once I get the solo X
That’s sad you are not even comparing sub’s that are in the same bracket and you are calling the Skar subs garbage!! Get the zvx 15 and the solo x 15 then compare them and then you can have a good comparison
Q class or american bass xfl?
Check the specs of the speakers before installing them in the same enclosure.
Now do Skar Evl Vs Kicker Comp Q😂
Why? The EVL isn't even skars best sub. Let me hear the vxf or zvx vs the comp Q
@@ryanmartin7709 something like that UA-cam has a lot of videos on these lol
@Timbo Slice I have a vxf and I do have 2k going to it lol
@Timbo Slice I was gonna go sundown.. I'm just starting out and bought a soundstream tarantula 12 and had a custom box made from gp audio.. I fried the soundstream and wanted a sub with similar box specs as the tarantula. So me and my boy looked around and thought the vxf would fot perfectly and it does, and sounds great. So I didn't have to have a new box built
@Timbo Slice which sucks, because back when the kicker cvr came out they were the shit... had 2 in the back of my jeep cherokee... now, I wouldn't touch them unless they were free lol
They have ones that are the same price from kicker and skar tho just depends on what quality or series u get. the 10s i just got was 200 a piece for skar
