This is the Jersey sound, no one could sing like Southside. From someone who spent years seeing Southside and the Jukes I always felt he deserved more recognition. Beautiful memories of hearing this beautiful, soulful voice. Thank you Johnny.
1976? Can't help but think if this performance had been on SNL in '76, rather than SCTV, Southside would be today a household name. People who know his work treasure him, but there was never enough of us who knew his work.
the song was from mid 70s...this performance is from about 1980/81..and ya, the future Mrs Springsteen is one of the background singers. Small world, eh?
It doesn't get any better than SCTV with Southside as "the wedding band"/musical guest❤️Also I've never seen anyone but James Pankow do a trombone solo!!
This is what I like most of UA-cam. Those blasts from the past of my favourite artists which I never would have seen, living in the Netherlands, if it wasn''t for channels like this, to post it here. Thank you.
Great memories, growing up on the Shore trying to figure out if South was playing somewhere each weekend, and if was a place we could sneak/talk our underage butts into.
Wow! Here is an appearance by Southside in his namesake of Chicago, a blues reference to the Southside's great Blues scene. Although they refer to the Chicago as the Second City, this performance is second to none. Patti Scialfa is on background vocals too!
You're welcome. I saw them about 20 times between 1976 and 1980. I have to confess to moving on to other things after that, but never stopped following from a distance. I think it's great that SSJ has always managed to make a living from his music, even if he never became a household name.
SPECTACULAR!! Thanks, Paul Parker!! Never got to see Southside live in person, and I do remember SCTV, but didn't see this episode. Southside Johnny should have been (or should be) A BIGGER STAR around the U.S.
I saw Southside a number of times, once in Winston-Salem, NC, at Wake Forest University, in 1980 and there were no more than a couple hundred people there. As I like to tell the story, I was so close to the stage (the concert was actually held in the college church, which if memory serves me correctly was/is called Waite Chapel) that Southside sweat on me. It was a great show but bittersweet because I agree with you, he never reached the heights that he should have reached.
Probably the best concert I've ever attended because of the beautiful weather and amount and the variety of artist. Southside, Bromberg, Derringer, Dimeola, Aztec, Rungren, Charlie Daniels, PPL with Richie Cannada on Sax, Blotto (I wanna be a lifeguard), Flatt and Scruggs. We had a five gallon cooler full of Vodka Punch between three of us. I wore the three quarter sleeve T-Shirt back to high school for my senior year. I've seen Southside about thirty time since then. I last saw him in Lido Beach about ten years ago at the free 4th of July Fireworks Show......and at Coney Island Free Concert Series with Thorougood.
Probably the best concert I've ever attended. All day long. Great weather. About twenty bands. No bottles or cans but they let us bring in a five gallon igloo container with a spout. Vodka and grapefruit juice....lol. I've probably seen SSJ about 40 times.
What a find! From the Jukes' personnel, I'd guess this is from '80 or '81. But "The Fever" is on their first album, not the second. Thanks for sharing this.
SNL might have had some great musical guests, but so did SCTV. AND it was one funny show. Yeah, it was sometimes just local market and the states never really got it till Network 90. But, it was awesome television that overachieved week in- week out, with a distinctly Canadian slant to it that could make you laugh for hours afterward. And Yes, it could and did stand up to whatever SNL did. God, I miss this show.
This is from 1981.Guess which performer is now a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee! That's Patty Scialfa singing (in blue). Better known as the wife of Bruce Springsteen.
Paul Parker. Thank you so very much for this information that can finally put my mind at ease. This song has been trying to get back to me for many years. In 1977 I was a 22 year old and knew it all. I knew that this song had a beat that went straight to my soul. Are you at all familiar with the band Osibisa ? If not give them a listen. They also have a sound that goes to the soul. I have list of songs, albums and movies on my You Tube channel of stuff I am able to recall over the last couple of years. So far there are over 1,700 Items on my saved list. If you are bored some time check out my list and listen to a very wide selection of music. Thanks again
Sorta pre-Springsteen - she'd auditioned to be a singer in the E Street Band for the Born To Run tour, but was rejected because she was only 17. She got the gig later though...
Indeed, it is the very same - Patti Scialfa. (on the left) ua-cam.com/video/zDFajspQd38/v-deo.html I believe the other lady is Lisa Lowell. (on the right) ua-cam.com/video/9ntnLKCaaLg/v-deo.html
Johnny is the voice of the Jersey shore sound. The Jukes are one of the world's greatest bar bands. I don't know why Johnny was never a star.
Johnny was a star. Was for for me and I'm million miles away.
Johnny was a star. I’ve still got the vinyl to prove it.
Because advertisers took over the Jersey sound for vitamin b

tease my OG Springsteen-head friends that this is the best version of any Springsteen song done by anybody, including Springsteen.
Bruce may have written this song, but South Side Johnny kick's its ass upside and down. Do it Johnny.
Southside was asked what he thought when Springsteen gave him the song. "Run like hell before he changes his mind", he replied.
Bruce wrote it for him.
Southside has a better voice....

Saw Southside Johnny/Asbury Jukes Nov 1981 in 2,000 seat theater a mile from where I lived. Great show on the Reach Up And Touch The Sky Tour!!!!

Two of my all time favorites together, Southside and SCTV!!
This is just a reminder of what an American Treasure this guy is
Jersey Soul The Asbury soul sound! Love it!!
Wow, just a great sound.
SCTV had some really killer musical guests and they integrated them into the show as characters just brilliant
SCTV Southside Johnny and the Jukes were the bomb.
Paul Parker: thanks for posting. I like how they got a grand piano up the elevator into the apartment. Cheers!
You rock southside Johnny 👍
I remember seeing Southside on General Hospital or some other soap around '79.
Wow! Here is an appearance by Southside in his namesake of Chicago, a blues reference to the Southside's great Blues scene. Although they refer to the Chicago as the Second City, this performance is second to none. Patti Scialfa is on background vocals too!
I went to the 2nd Led Zeppelin concert Aug 79 at Knebworth, The Jukes were on the bill and they were fantastic.
I was at the first Knebworth concert, in Aug 79, SJ&tAJ simply blew everyone else away👍😊
This is great, somehow I never watched Second City, but I saw Southside many times at The Stone Pony beack in the mid seventies. Now I feel old. 😂
I like watching LaBamba (on the slide trombone)on stage The guy is always full of so much energy and a good leader of the horns section.
I used to go see them on New Years Eve at the Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ. Always a good time.
I did that 1979...last day of the 70s! I was 16 then and still following him, hes playing Seaside in 2 weeks!

Thank you for sharing this video !
❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️😊😊😊
Great song, from one of my favorite albums. Thanks Southside!
Shout out to Eddie Manion on sax, just over Johnny's shoulder in most shots.
Springsteen takes Eddie Manion on the road when he tours.
love johnny & the jukes. real music...still & always

Coolest song ever
The mother in this clip is Catherine O'Hara, the mother in the"Home Alone" movie.
Patti Scialfa on backing vocals
How good is this? Amazing!
Is that Patty? Great Sound!!
What a find! From the Jukes' personnel, I'd guess this is from '80 or '81. But "The Fever" is on their first album, not the second. Thanks for sharing this.
Not just the personnel, but the backup singers' hairstyles and makeup. They damn sure wouldn't have looked that way in '76.

my all time favorite band.......thank for all the great songs
Who voted thumbs down?
Go back
Change that
Reconsider, at least
Save your miserable soul
Nice post, a young Patti on vocals.
Awesome.. I used to play I don't want to go home album right through 5 times a day for about 5 years.!
"Hearts of Stone" was my favorite LP but the first two were also high on my playlist.
Johnny was dripping attitude back then. What a band that was. Which brings the question.
What became of guitarist Billy Rush?
I think he became a music producer
ken wagner /
The future Mrs. Springsteen singing backup vocals.
What a gem
Thanks for the correction. I've adjusted the post. My favorite band in the 80s.
Jersey Rules!
Awesome find!
WOW!
Is that Patti Scialfa at 4:33?
It is indeed.
Paul Parker Wow! Nice catch! Any idea who the other girl is?
Thinking the same thing?
Lisa Lowell
I was just gonna ask :)
Great stuff!
This is from 1981.Guess which performer is now a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee! That's Patty Scialfa singing (in blue). Better known as the wife of Bruce Springsteen.
Who is the drummer here? Wow!! This is great! What a band !!!
Is that Patti Scalfia singing background???
Dammit! I had no idea Bill Maher was in a band back in the day! (:
I believe it is. Scott Sovereen verified it 9 months ago.
Is one of those back up girl singers Patty The Bosses wife?
Yes
The other is Lisa Lowell . When Suzie Tyrell joined them, South referred to them as The Chicken Sisters
Is the back up singer on the left patty Scialka.. Bruce Springsteen’s wife.. I swear it is..
It is, indeed.
Patti Scialfa is singing back-up!
Wel i guess a gig is a gig!!
Heel leuk. Toen was 'Johnny' nog goed bij stem.
that 'redheaded woman' at about the 2min mark looks mighty familiar...hmm. #MrsBoss

Jammie .....
who knows what song they did where in the intro with the horn section the beat progresses and the horns sound like elephants trumpeting
I believe you are referring to the song "When You Dance". It's the last song on the "This Time It's For Real" album (1977).
Paul Parker. Thank you so very much for this information that can finally put my mind at ease. This song has been trying to get back to me for many years. In 1977 I was a 22 year old and knew it all. And the native chanting on the intro is from the Clark Gable safari movie Mogambo. Hence the elephant trumpeting
That's Mrs. Springsteen (Patti Scialfa) handling back-up vocals on a song written by her future husband. What are the odds?
Is that a pre-Springsteen Patti Scialfa on the left?
YES
Sorta pre-Springsteen - she'd auditioned to be a singer in the E Street Band for the Born To Run tour, but was rejected because she was only 17. She got the gig later though...
is'nt she... Patti Scialfa?

I was wondering if that was her...
Southside looks like every other white boy from the westside of Cleveland in 1960's !
TV in the 70s and 80s was better
Nope, no such luck!
Beer commercial rock, BORING SHIT!
Dave Furgess Go away please. You're the one who's boring the most!
i think stuff like this gave rise to the likes of Eddie Money! Thank God for the Sex Pistols!
Then why are you watching this?
