How much more could Steve and Bruce of done??? Johnny was good live but his albums just didn't cut the mustard at the time they were released... look at all the anthems 77, 78 era had from other bands and musicians had. Was some of the most competitive years in music history... Johnny was NO failure!!!
Johnny made the decision to put his trust in Willie Rush and that trash it up dance crap after the critically acclaimed album Hearts of Stone produced by Miami Steve. Complete failure. Candidly, Johnny owes all his success and little notoriety he has to Miami Steve’s writing and arrangements as well as the several songs Bruce gifted him. Yes, Johnny is a good front man/stage presence but his song writing skills were poor. In Stephen’s book he mentions that the Jukes still owe him about $250k in unpaid management fees-I assume he was referencing Johnny.
I worked this concert as a greeter and met Southside as he was going on stage. Thought I would have some fun with him and asked for his ID with a smile on my face of course and his response to me was singing the phrase "I don't want to go home" I remember laughing about it. A great memory. Glad I found this video..
Incredible story. He was an A-Lister but he never made it to the top of the Billboard. We all know his place was up there. His band, his songwriters, his producers were the biggest East Coast talents at the time and he had all of the stuff the others only dreamt of. He released some of the best albums at that time in my opinion.
LOVE THESE 2 PLAYING. IM FROM THE JERSEY SHORE. HOPE JOHNNY WILL BE OKAY..HES A NICE GUY SAW HIM LOCALLY. GET WELL JOHNNY. HE NEVER TURNED DOWN A GIG 4 CHARITY..❤
Watching this again after hearing the news today. Breaks my heart for him and the band. Would have been a great New Year’s Eve Bash at the Stone Pony. Get well soon Johnny.
Ha! I saw them perform at either Cornell or SUNY Binghamton in the late 70’s. I was sitting 2nd or 3rd row all the way off to the right, with my head turned to the left for most of the evening. Great brass section, but the hearing in my right ear was “fogged” for days thereafter, and never completely returned to normal! Might have been worth it, though!!😂
For those who appreciate how great Southside is, no additional info is needed...for those who dont, gotta feel bad for 'em. One of THE great "blue eyed soul" singers..ever.
Shame to think that the party may actually have finally broken up. Am really glad I got to see SS and the band when they toured the UK earlier this year....had dreams of Bruce and Mr VZ nipping by for a couple of songs...but that never materialised. But it was still great. And as it turns out - a fitting way to leave the grind of touring. Southside you gave me some great memories over the decades. Impeccable eye for picking musicians to play in.the Jukes - heaven knows, they were forever being poached for the Disciples and the E Street. But I guess in the end, it was all part of the New Jersey brotherhood. God bless Southside - rest up and get better soon. You've sure earned the right to put your feet up.
I was so excited to see these guys live twice and different venues in the UK on their first ever European shows. They were supporting Graham Parker & The Rumour and were absolutely stunning and put in a brilliant performance. This must have been around 1977 and these shows still stand out as amongst my favourites.
spent most of my life in irvington, west orange NJ growing up as a teenager I love bruce and bonjovi by southside was and still my favorite saw him a dozen times in NJ
We saw SS in 2005 at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center. Huey Lewis and The News were there, too. I loved seeing SS and the Jukes in person! Was such a great time!
been to the capital theatre to see southside, bad co ,linda ronstadt weird place during the day they showed xxx movies and once a week they had burlesk shows
The raw version of Bruce. If only he had the looks, he would have been big. I saw/heard Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes in a small venue in Utrecht, the Netherlands and they raised the roof. The horn section did most of the work.
Saw them backing Graham Parker & the Rumour at the Usher Hall, Edinburgh, in 1976 and they blew me away! Seen SJ&tAJ several times since and they never fail to be phenomenal.
I know that it's getting late But I don't want to go home I am in no hurry baby time can wait I don't want to go home Listen to the man sing his song I don't want to go home I don't mind baby to stay alnight long Cause I don't want to go home Listen baby I know we had to try To reach up and touch the sky baby What ever happened to you and I That I don't want to go home Look at all the people staying Saying I don't want to go home In the night I don't want to go home I know the words to the song I feel I don't want to go home I know it's talking about the way I feel I don't want to go home Listen baby I know we had to try To reach up and touch the sky baby What ever happened to you and I That I don't want to go home I want to hear people laughing And having a good time I want to know why she told me she had to go Why did she leave me lonely I know it's time to go But I don't want to go home You don't play the blues soft and low Cause I don't want to go home Listen baby I know we had to try To reach up and touch the sky baby What ever happened to you and I That I don't want to go home
The song of Asbury Park forever & always. I s pent many nights at the Stone Pony because I worked as a Cocktail Waitress just 3 blocks north. I've always felt the Southside Johnny, in my humble opinion, was better than Bruce. Oh, how I miss those days on Ocean Avenue in the 70's.
I saw these guys in a little bar in Elyria Ohio. Couldn't have been 200 people. Ronnie Ronette singing back up and the big man Clarence Clemons on horn. Fantastic show!
Thank you, Johnny. I wish you had made it bigger than you did. But for those who saw you live, we will never forget.
WHY DOES BRUCE NOT Mention HIM??\
@@danmandich2843 Bruce did what he could, even wrote a few songs just for Johnny...

@@antonystorey1544 You're right. Johnny was great live, but the albums never quite matched up... Best, Andrzej

The heart they put into this song is amazing. Great song always.
I absolutely refuse to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame until they induct Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes!
South and the Jukes are the greatest acts to have never been mainstream. Long live The South
Jersey isn't that far south 😉🤔
Southside I believe is referring to Chicago, that he is from, near Southside New Jersey, pure coincidence.
Great singer, and great band.
Steve Van Zandt on stage with Johnny, Kevin Kavanaugh, George Ruiz, Bobby Bandiera. What a fantastic version of the Jukes this was.
I was there……MTV was shooting it. At some point there was a technical glitch. Southside and Co stepped forward and did an acapella song. Magic.
MY favorite song for so many years.
Same here. I saw them three times.
Partied to this all through the years especially new years!!
I had friends that visited relatives at the Jersey Shore in the mid '70's. They came back with Southside Johnny and Bruce Springsteen records.
The Philly Captain vlog brought me here! Great song I never heard before 2023! Love it now 👍🏻😎
Oh god, I was there. I’m old!
The best. Miami Steve and Southside Johnny❤
This song is timeless 🐐
A band that reminds us - life is for living.
Saw Southside about 8 yrs ago at a tiki bar right smack on the beach in Jersey. I was in heaven.
Steve (Little Stevie) Van Zandt, who not only wrote it but had arranged it.
what a great song - Springsteen, Van Zandt and Southside at their best
A great voice
I just love the entire family 💯 and his Nephew Karl Lyon who deserves a shout-out!
I wish Southside Johnny would come to Florida I'd love to see him
they were booked in stuart the year of covid and show was cancelled, had tickets so looking forward to it
Saw Southside last Friday and believe me he can still do it.
It's magic. Thank you Stevie and Johnny!
Sometimes when I listen Southside Johnny I think to the J.Geils Band with the voice of Peter Wolf. Love it S.J. with Steve V.Z. 🌟🍀
He played alot of smaller venues and the places were always packed.

Love the Jukes. Such a good-time party band.

I played this 3 times on a roll this time🤩...Every time this song , in any form , comes up...there I go🎉🥳💞💕💖
Southside Johnny is a New Jersey legend!
Never knew the soprano’s man wrote this - it’s a total classic and never ever get tired of hearing it👌

I saw Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes in Oct 1980. Freaking great horn section and fantastic show.

Went to see them perform on New Year’s Eve a couple of times. Great fun, great memories.
Saw them at Knebworth in 78, brilliant
Best house band ever
Bad Bob and that pink shirt👍
Great song done brilliantly! As fine as the original by The Left Banke and then the 4 Tops, this is my favorite.
I thought Steve Van Zandt wrote this. You thinking of 'Walk Away Renee'?
Still frgn great! In 2024! Do y'all ever wonder who will carry on this music???!!!
Boy wish I had seen them!
Incredible 🙌🏽🖤
My jersey soul
Such a great song!
He still plays, and it's still so fun. ❤
Finally got to see Southside live a few years ago and he was as good as I hoped he'd be

They come to Utrecht in july this year!
I saw them in Aberdeen in the late 70s. I think they may have been supporting Graham Parker and The Rumour.
Perfect combination.
Great version of this terrific song!!
Saludos a todos los fans de S. J. . Somos los mejores. We are the best fans. S. J. is fantastic.
Saw them winter 1980-1981at Brockport University upstate NY. Best concert ever. The Auditotilrum floor was shaking up and down! Amazing!
Saw them backing Graham Parker & the Rumour at the Usher Hall, Edinburgh, in 1976 and they blew me away! Seen SJ&tAJ several times since and they never fail to be phenomenal.
Convinced beyond a doubt these Jersey guys are the coolest in the world.
As good as it gets

I LOve that BAND ❤
Did you see Southside? I heard Jimmy saw Southside (me chewing gum).
So great
I know that it's getting late
But I don't want to go home
I am in no hurry baby time can wait
I don't want to go home
Listen to the man sing his song
I don't want to go home
I don't mind baby to stay alnight long
Cause I don't want to go home
Listen baby
I know we had to try
To reach up and touch the sky baby
What ever happened to you and I
That I don't want to go home
Look at all the people staying
Saying I don't want to go home
In the night
I don't want to go home
I know the words to the song I feel
I don't want to go home
I know it's talking about the way I feel
I don't want to go home
Listen baby
I know we had to try
To reach up and touch the sky baby
What ever happened to you and I
That I don't want to go home
I want to hear people laughing
And having a good time
I want to know why she told me she had to go
Why did she leave me lonely
I know it's time to go
But I don't want to go home
You don't play the blues soft and low
Cause I don't want to go home
Listen baby
I know we had to try
To reach up and touch the sky baby
What ever happened to you and I
That I don't want to go home
Works fine in speed 1.5 too🤘🤘🤘
Seeing you guys tonight @hollywoodhardrock
Classic
Love ya baby Perfect
They definitely should have been big time!!
So this is what Sil was doing before the Bada Bing!

Where are the other videos from this performance? :/ Went missing.
Where is Willie Rush at?
New Jersey music royalty
When you needed actuall talent.
👍
Whatifalthist brought me here
for Nancy Papp
Silvio! 😬
stan helsing
Silvio Dante! The best guitarist Bruce ever had.
That would be Nils Lofgren.
So lame, so played out, why did I even tune in?
What’s that supposed to mean
@@docholiday1806 Don't feed the trolls.
If you don't like it, o and listen to something else, simple........

Redemption
I saw these guys in a little bar in Elyria Ohio.
Couldn't have been 200 people. Ronnie Ronette singing back up and the big man Clarence Clemons on horn. Fantastic show!
