Desert Snow Storm SOLO Backpacking Nevada Desert | Giant CRATER!
Вставка

- Hi Guys,
I go desert backpacking and spend the night in a gigantic 434 foot deep Lunar Crater and wake up to a snow storm!!!...that's right! We are not on the moon but in Central Nevada on the Lunar Crater National Backcountry Byway! This byway has volcanic craters, lava fields and wide open desert wilderness as we are over 75 miles to the nearest gas station! I go backpacking down into the Lunar Crater with my REI Quarter Dome 1 tent and spend the night....I wake to find a late season spring snow storm in the bottom of the crater! See what happens after that!!

Hello 👋 Chris, greetings from Northern California. Thank you for the tag along. This was a fascinating outing. Thank you for the history update regarding the astronaut training. Always stay safe and healthy out. See you on your next outdoor adventure. 🤗
🤣🤣🤣see you in the morning...cuts to the next clip “it’s snowing” 🤣🤣🤣
I didn't even have he rain fly on the tent...thought I'd watch the stars! Turned out I ended up watching the snow. "Keep Hiking!"
Chris you are a fabulous film maker !! Great content detail love your stuff!!
Thanks so much!
What a charming gentleman! Thank you Chris, for taking us with you on your amazing adventures!
Gotta have that coffee (we understand)!☕️✨
Another top video. Chris, love your content man. Already looking forward to your next adventure
Thanks Tarris...I found this location on Google Earth ...had to check it out.
I can’t believe no snakes 🐍 great adventures my man, you never fail with these videos! Whew!
Thank you! I do love to explore...Got a new one coming soon.
Base Camp Chris I can’t wait to see it. Those green pants you wear which zip off to shorts... what brand are they?
That’s remarkable! You camped in a volcano. Seems that would be a unique experience 👍
Thanks Mark, it was...I felt very comfortable in there...straight up walls completely around ( no water source ) very memorable!
Hi Chris! Would love to see you with a garmin in-reach, or some other tracking device when you are out on solo hikes like this! Not only would it ease the concerns of your subscribers, but it might set a great example for someone just getting into solo hikes in the back-country. Obviously, you are quite an experienced outdoorsman, but even the most experienced of us can take a tumble or become ill or...you name it. And in back-country such as this, where even AM radio signals are scarce, let alone cell service, without a reliable sat-com device, no one is going to come looking for you until you are reported missing...and we all know, that is usually way too late. Love your channel, the content, along with your positive, upbeat demeanor. Not to mention your great reviews and helpful info!
Hey JetJock...I do travel with a Spot-X with SOS for Search and Rescue and full communication to my contacts also a portable power bank for all other devices...but that is a good idea to go over what precautions I have made for myself...show these to my viewers and mention what I have in place as insurance in case something happens...Good idea ...Thanks for your concern!
Lololololol wow !!!
Coffee in the car !!!
Another stunning video ...youuuuuuuuu
(Snow in the desert is just magnificent)
GREAT. CAMPING.

Wow. How cool (no pun intended) to camp out in a hugh crater and wake up to snow falling, what the .... Oh well I'll take my time make coffee and then casually stroll back to my car. Ha ha A great video Chris.nice to see you outside again
Thanks I Like Quiet! Good trip, unique area...did not see the snow coming!
Coffee emergency. I totally understand!😬🇨🇦
This is a fantastic video Chris. Thank you. I've been to Crater lake in Oregon - you should go - and Meteor Crater in Arizona, but I love the way you've gone right to the bottom and camped there. I didn't know much about Lunar Crater, but thanks to your video I do now. I will put it on my list of places to visit when in the area next time.
Thank you Captain David....remote country but worth the trip! I will get up to Crater Lake....!
Loved it
Thanks Infinite! It was a good trip.
Chris. Great videos. You are creating a monster. Now I have to go myself to all these new cool places.
The lastest I have seen it snow in the Sierra Nevada is May. And that was a shock also. As always you are great to start and end my day.
Pretty crazy about the snow ❄️ 😜 😳
Fun watching!
I have frozen my behind off even in June near there in Central NV.
The term desert lulls many into thinking
pleasant warmth. Hardly the case at that 6000 foot high plateau.
Great country out there....Yes, gotta be on your A game ( no services or anything for miles ) Thanks for watching!
Yes Chris please have a tracking device with you. We don't want you to get lost. Also your girlfriend wants you to be safe! Really enjoy your videos. Makes me almost want to camp!
I was scrolling through the comments and Chris answered someone else about that. He said that he carries a Spot X with him and other devices. ☺️
5:55 This just has to feel great!
That was a good trip...I plan on going back...more To Explore!
Close call buddy you made a good choice getting 👍out of that big hole in the ground .and what's up with that week starting car . Best get that checked you do go out to the middle of no where often.another awesome video.
Thanks 👍yes that battery was updated.
Awesome video Chris. Keep hiking 🥾
Fantastic video! I’ve never been to the desert but I would really like to go sometime. Glad you got out safe.
Thanks so much!
Don’t forget the sunscreen!
Outstanding video. I’ve been in that same situation in Nevada and you definitely want to error on the side of caution when the snow starts to fall.
Yeah, I was by myself and way out there any glitch and it could be a problem..
Pretty neat place to camp and the Mountain House Chicken Teriyaki is delicious.
It's very tasty! Thanks for watching.
Love the videos Chris keep them coming!
Thanks! Will do!
Another great and informative video chris.
I'd love to camp there.
But am in UK.

Thank you Andy! I had a good trip and adventure...UK has some great wild areas!
@@basecampchris

Boa ist das ein großes Loch
Great vid!
Cool.. nice place. Like high desert here in ARIZONA it can go from hot to Snowing in same day.
The one night you leave the fly off it snows! Great video. 👌🏼
Yes! Exactly...sleep through it...too. I believe it was in the 70s the day before.
I truly enjoyed this video.. thank you for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it! Love the desert!
wow, that's pretty amazing. i don't know if i would feel comfortable going into a volcanic crater. between you and cathrine gregory ( i just watched her video on crater lake. absolutely gorgeous place!!!) i have seen a lot of beautiful desolate country. thank you, look forward to your next adventure.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks you!
@David Breen. Thanks for mentioning Cathrine Gregory. Been looking for new exploring backpacking videos since Chris has veered into story telling and Catherine has some great videos.
Dope video!! Encouragement for my travels. Subscribed!
Awesome! Thank you!
Hope you got home safely.
Any signs of rattlesnakes? That is pretty cool! I was born and raised in Vegas and never even knew about these!! I guess I need to take a trip back down there. I live in Washington State now. Talk about some beautiful places to camp!
Tonapah?!! I lived there for a few months! There is absolutely nothing there. We tried driving to the test site and turned back after we started feeling sick on our drive there. Some people said they likely put gas out after we passed all the warning signs. Both of us in the car started vomiting. What's crazy is, about 5 minutes after turning around we both felt 100% better. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but they definitely don't play games around those major sites.
Wow crazy stuff!! Yes it's in the middle of nowhere...Amazing lava fields though...I'll be back! ( Washington looks awesome ! )
nice!
Thanks!
Awesome adventure! Went there in the end of June and that remote road beat my poor Mazda 3 to pieces.
Sorry to hear that....very remote country.
"Sun so hot, I froze myself, Suzanna don't you cry!"
I hope you have a geiger counter with you. Do you remember the atomic testing during the fifties? Stay safe Chris.
good job with your videos. I know your channel is going to grow. you bring great content and practical tips. thanks and keep it coming. Ive thought of retiring in nevada.
Thank you tidiefend1... I appreciate the support...one video at a time...see what happens.
Your starter on your car sounded a little slow. You better check that battery. I enjoy your videos. Keep hiking!
Hey Thanks Robin - good call! "Keep Hiking!"
I live in Medford Oregon pretty damn close to crater lake.. it's a cool place for sure..bunch of unsolved Mysteries the natives stayed away from it.. it supposedly has a lot of UFO sightings a lot of people go missing around the area
Interesting - I didn't know that about Crater...I may go to the Extraterrestrial highway area...north of Area 51. Cool places to hike/ remote. government airstrips here and there...
Hey Chris. Thanks for the video. I'm wondering how rough that highway is. Extremes of heat and cold must beat it up pretty good
Showing my New England ignorance here BUT I did not know it ever snowed in the desert!!!
I’m an old lady but, if I would have camped that far out, without any cover, I would have had a gun. Not because of wildlife but because of humans, they are the only ones who have scared me camping alone over the years.
Man I missed that faint sage smell early in the morning in Nevada desert!
The fresh snow really brings that out!
I had the same reaction when it snowed up here in Oregon during April too 🤣🤣🤣
Was looking forward to my camp breakfast! Thanks for watching.
Glad you got out of there.where to next?
Yes, top video. But sleeping in a crater seems creepy to me. I would probably be afraid.
Fair enough!
HELLO.
Love the videos . . You show me so many places i want to visit. Could you tell me the name of you little chair in this video?
I believe this was the REI Flex lite air chair....Thanks for watching.
I know it was cold, but that engine seemed to turn over a little bit too slow. Being in the backcountry in a snow storm with a bad battery is not good. lol. But, it was a great video. Made me want to travel there and put up a tent and spend the night in the bottom of that crater.
I'd suggest people to ride mountain bikes long distances before traveling out far in their cars. If they go off-grid camping and car breaks down, put bike on top of car and ride into town when needed. Have a bike cart to tow as well with camping gear in there. 😉 Of course always have satellite GPS tracker and communication tech! Have 10+ gallons of fresh water in the car.
@@Northanteus Hmmm, That gives me an idea. I have a Toyota Tacoma 4x4 and I also have a Trek Mountain bike. I go into some pretty lonely places in that Tacoma. Maybe I need to start throwing the Trek in the back just in case.
Hi, Chris I was wondering if you can do a camp video on public lands close to area 51
Yeah...good idea...I have a video or two in mind!
🇨🇦🌞cool! Thanks Chris. I never knew about these craters. How ancient are they? If you know? T
The last video look like Mars this one looks like the moon with snow, way Cool Base camp.is that all the water you took it looks like there isn't any more available anywhere else? And how can I get one of those ball caps? Can't wait for the next video!
Hi James, I had two 32oz bottles...enough for one night...Yes I'm starting to hike the planets in our solar system...Jupiter is next! LOL. I don't have merchandise available...but have been thinking about adding it! I'll make a short vid when it's available...Thanks for your support!
Chris do you think you should check the surrounding area for radiation before camping there...?
Great one Chris! Who does your filming??
He does his own filming.
The biggest misconception by out of staters in Nevada, is that all of Nevada is a big super dry, hot desert. Very wrong and it has gotten many people into serious trouble. Nevada is the most mountainous state in the United States, and northern Nevada is semi-arid with VERY wet, cold, and longer winters due to the higher elevations.
Weather is quite unpredictable here, and one can’t trust the weather forecast as it is rarely accurate, especially in fall and spring. Pack well if you plan on hiking and traveling in this state, similar to if you were going hiking in a big mountain range like the Sierra Nevada, because it could very easily save your life.
Thanks for the content by the way, a good video and reminder to those wanting to hike in Nevada.
Thank you NorCal good stuff to remember! Extremely remote state as well! ( Next Gas 107 miles! ) etc...
Love your channel Chris, just stumbled on it these past few days and have been binge watching when I get a chance. One thing, if this doesn't sound too negative, would be if you could say what permits you needed in the places you camp overnight. I guess in this video it's BLM land but do you ever need to pay for a permit?
Nice work Chris...really enjoying your channel. This one was really interesting. What camera do you film with? Jeff
Thanks Jeff! I been using the Canon M50 mirrorless with the Rode GO Mic and a windjammer ( fuzzy rat over it ) happy with it....looking to add a wide angle for it.
Thanks Chris !
It’s always amazing how unpredictable the high desert can be. Hey which pour over coffee maker do you like better? The GSI or the Sea to Summit?
I like the GSI Ultra Light Coffee Drip.
@@basecampchris I was leaning toward that but I just came across the MSR mug mate. Amazon should be delivering it today haha. It is a pour over but it sits down in the cup instead of above. As a result it gives a longer brew so you can make the coffee however potent you want. I’ll reply back with my opinion 👍
When reading about Mount Whitney a few years ago, I read about all the roads in Nevada where you can just basically pull off and camp, within certain parameters. Where did you park in relation to the crater, how far off road, etc.? I'd be concerned about my vehicle even if I was remote. Of course, if I was there, it would be a rental. :)
Hi A.J. the area had a small trailhead like parking lot....I saw one other person ....in 2 days.
@@basecampchris Looks like just the sort of isolation I love and hate. And tablets allow you to watch Netflix before heading to bed! Just put it up in the gear loft facing down. :)
Next time you go camping. Leave the camera on so we can see all the. Stars.
Good idea!
What trekking poles do you use
Hi Chris, I picked up a set called Trail Buddy abut a year ago. Light weight , cork handle , easy to adjust and affordable...$37.99 amz
Do you carry a Satellite phone?
Ist das von ein Vulkan
Sied der Boden so aus weil er vertrocknet ist ja sag mahl bitte
I hope you have cerizon pn your cell or you wont ve able to call out. You get cell phone service anywhere on the earth with verizon its just the truth.
Not sure how you made it that far without coffee ☕️. I couldn’t do that 🤓. 👍☮️🌞🗻⛺️🥾🩵
