Great video , the best one I have seen on How to read a fish finder, , & trust me I have been watching a few of them Thanks 👍
Couldn't agree more. Absolutely fantastic! After years of watching videos about how to read fish finders, finally one that actually shows you how to read a fish finder
Thanks for making this video. I'm someone who needs to have someone explain what you are seeing the way you did. Very helpful. Keep more videos like this coming.
Awesome video, I’d like to see the map view of when you come back to fish and how you position over the places you marked. Basically after you find the fish how to come back without spooking them again
My thoughts exactly.....would love to see this as well. Thanks Gene!
Yes, this has been one of my biggest issues, taking my eyes off the screen and looking out over the water, trying to find and setting up on my waypoints, and knowing where the structure / fish is located in reference to my marked on screen way point.
Just started using a fish finder and u have the same question
Good vid. How bout setting the fish finder up to get the best quality imagine.
Phenomenal video. Clear and concise presentation. Really helped to understand and interpret what is on the screen. Thank you.
If possible, some tips on boat / kayak positioning in relationship to whats being interpreted on the sonar screen with regards to how the fish and / bait fish are relating to the structure of cover. I think that would be helpful with these sonar videos.
Again, thank you for your time and effort in bringing this content. Greatly appreciated.
Your editing is getting better and better .
Thanks Dean! I’m slowly building up my fishing kayak and the last thing is about to be added...a fishfinder (happy 70th birthday to me). I used to have one on our pontoon boat, but I never was good at figuring out what I was looking at. That was 15 years ago and technology has moved up at lot.
better to spend 4 hours in a 5 hour trip using your electronics to know what exactly you are going to be fishing. So hard to get people off of the banks all the time.
I'm watching but see no difference between what you're calling bass and what your calling baitfish. I can understand why they are not below the thermocline,, I can understand looking for cover but how you can differentiate one "dot" from another "dot is beyond me. From here they all look to be the same size and same distance apart. I'll watch again. haha that second fish was much better..
Surprise you never got into the whole Garmin live scope.
I need five of that last fish you caught this coming weekend on Clear Lake in California both on Saturday and Sunday! Can you make that happen!? Lol! Good video keep them coming.
Much better. ! ! ! Next time don't forget a LONG pencil... So your hand that's holding the pencil isn't in the screen... Can't wait for the next video 🙂🙂🙂
Finally, a layman's video on this topic, which is so frustrating for "duffer" bass-anglers. So many of us are never going to cave-in and throw tons of money on current state-of-the-art systems and this video helped me try to understand better, the one I'm married to. Good job, Dean!
Awesome! Thank you for pointing out those different things. I have always said I wanted not to fish at all and just drive around. That never happens. I just feel I need a bigger screen to see what I’m looking at. I have a raymarine dragonfly 5”. I’m glad you took the time to make this video. I would say make another one just following up!
Question for you.. I fought with auto chart live for 2 weeks after getting my helix 10 g4n. I could never see the colored path on the base map with contour lines as I mapped. Nobody, including Humminbird tech, could figure it out. Then by accident I found out that you have to zoom in to be able to see the depths and colored path as I map. Why doesn't anyone say you have to zoom on all these videos? 8k
Great stuff. Recommendation for kayak fish finder at current technology levels 2023?
How does your kayake handle the big waves from motor boats. I bought a fishing kayak 3 years ago but have only used it floating the creeks. I have flipped it once where I got sideways up next to a downed tree. Surprisingly it flipped quick. Ive been wanting to fish some lakes around here but am a little concerned about the motor boats and we have lots of fisher people here. My kayak is a sturdy well built fishing kayak but as we know all kayaks can flip. Bona-fide i think is how its spelled, is what I have
Maybe you explained it on another video, but I was constantly wondering what the symbols on the mapping meant, the XX I presumed are known "fish attractors" but there are circles and triangles as well.
I think alot of guys that have been bass fishing for 30 or 40 years that dont have a clue about anything but reading depth . Im guilty of it too. Thanks for the primary facts that other guys assume we all know . Ive bass fished since 1969. If you use this info , you will do much better .
This type of fishing would be my third choice, as I just broke down and bought a fish finder. I do appreciate you sharing sir. Please share your thought process as you approach a tournament. What is your must do to prepare?
Some of the lakes I fish are full of bait fish and all kinds of predator fish like bass, stripers, drums, gar etc.. So much so that every piece of offshore structure I look there is fish. How would you narrow down to most likely ones with bass?
Duuuude! Thank you so much. Got a fish finder for Christmas and am really intimidated by it. This really helped out alot!
Hey Gene, This the next step for me to learn from you! I have Lowrance on my boat and would love to find out how to set the thermocline setting. I can tell that is very important to know. Thanks
Nice video, question unrelated I noticed you have your PFD mounted on your abdomen not chest is their a reason or personal preference? Keep up the great work!
Use a smaller pointer ( not your finger or knife blade). I couldn’t see what you were pointing at on the fish finder. Other than that, good information.
This is exactly the video I needed I finally dive into a fish finder; the capabilities I should look for and exactly how to use them.
It was great meeting you in Utah a few weeks back at the hyrum tournament! Keep up the great content Gene!
Do you or could you make a video of a buyers guide to getting a fish finder or your fish fish finder? (tournament ready/ fun fishing)
I’m fixing to hook up my hook reveal five so your videos are very helpful thank you so much keep up the hard work good luck to you
Great video. I’m brand new to the FF game and need to learn so much and I just did. Thanks!
Do virtual fishfinder class, I would pay to attend the class.
Are you fishing the bassmaster tournament in Michigan this weekend?
Why did they start with the baitcaster reels backwards and call it a right handed reel when compared to a spinning reel it's a left. Now all the left handed baitcasters. Aka the actual right handed ones they make less of them and they are all sold out
I want to see on the fish finder and then see where you throw your lure. Is it behind the kayak or to the side? Still confused on that. You point at the screen and say we are right here, but where is that? The back, front, side?
Great video Gene . Thank you I learned alot , especially about the thermocline area's . The sonar window does confuse me a little . but looking at the down imaging helps me alot better to understand what I am seeing . Could you spend sometime explaining the sonar part ? Thank you I loved this video great catch this is getting saved into favorites lol !
Yes, I’m curious about that too. For instance, at 1:13pm there are a lot of arcs on the sonar, but nothing on the down view. I’m curious what those are and why you knew to ignore. Thanks for the content.
What model and all kayak is that? Noticed you weren’t pedaling
Hey can you do a video just like this but on some of the more affordable units to kayak angler's
I may have missed something about the thermal line on your depth finder. Help me out, how to to spot or find?
Great video
I don’t know if you have a video on this but I’d like to see how to mark the spot and then how far to cast to it wether it’s using marker buoys or gps
This is exactly what I needed. Thank you.
Love it classic catch a fish and bam the intro you know your watching a good vid
Videos like this are so needed. I looked at mine for 25 hours a week for 1 year and a half to get some idea of what I was looking at.
I like to eat fish very much, but not playing or fishing,
How are you rigging your worms?
Love your video, I just purchased a helix 7 and you just showed me everything I was hoping for on UA-cam..thank you so much
Find a shell bed next time.... show what angle you fish it.
If you don’t mind I’d really like to know where I can find ur electronics
The only thing I need better help on is telling the difference between hard and soft bottom. It has to do with the colors rite?
Great vid. Can you tell me why on 2d it looks like fish arches but on down imagining it looks clear. It’s a little confusing
It's due to the shape of the signal. The 2d is a round signal and the down imaging is a narrow oval going from side to side. The fish stay in the 2d signal longer.
Flukemaster was gonna ask the same question but figured I wasn’t the only one😁😂
Flukemaster thanks really enjoying your videos. Keep up the great work
Really great video . Thanks for the info .
Just turn the boat around to go back to fish you passed over.
Needed this video so bad, thank you for this!!
Amazink
maybe you can go over the proper ff settings ?
Great video I had no idea that you can see the thermocline on a fish finder
You may have just convinced me to buy one. Lmao
Gene I have a question. What dept finder, fish finder do you recommend someone buying that's not to expensive?
Got a video on a goof beginner fish Finder?
Fluke I CANT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR MAKING THESE VIDEOS HELPING ME UNDERSTAND HOW TO USE MY ELECTRONICS BETTER,, BROTHER I APPRECIATE IT ... thank you sooo much...!! EXCELLENT VIDEO , HELPS me A TON ...!!!!!!!
Show us what you are fishing for on the graph
Can you do some fish finder videos, from your bass boat? Maybe show how you mark them and how you know where to put the boat and where to cast.
I am still lost when I try to tag fish and then fish for them.
Sure
Great video learned a lot in a few minutes. Thanks for sticking with down image over side. Lots of folks doing you tube are explaining side image which would be great if I had it. I'm using a Ray Marine Dragonfly 5 could you get into how to utilize the SD cards and get charts. For now I'm using my phone for so-so charts via Fishbrain Pro subscription for $75/year. Thanks again for all the knowledge. Does that app you use offer charts?
Two questions as a late viewer. First, your thoughts on Side Vision being a requirement if an angler fishes mainly shallow waters. Second, Some products seem to present a clearer more visible screen than some of the popular brands. The Raymarine units I've seen look good and yours did well in the sun during this filming. I've also read a LOT about ease of use of the Lowrance units. Do you have any experience with Raymarine as compared to others, like Lowrance? Thanks, and Go Dawgs!
I'm still confused on how to read fish on regular sonar. The down imaging looks black like nothing there at times but regular finder has all these curves and lines at the same time. Thanks for videos.
Awesome video Gene. Looking to get into fish finders. I want to start with just mapping, temps and depth. Thanks for the pointers! You’re awesome! Huge fan.
How does the element perform in deep water?
Ok, when you went back to fish those spots where you saw bass, if they were in less than 12 feet - I’m thinking you went back and made your casts based strictly on the map/waypoint rather than 2d/di - Right ? Thanks for these vids - so helpful 😊‼️
Excellent video, always want to learn more about how to use my electronics, on my Kayak I only have 2D (Hook2 4") so I'm very limited on what I can see, would love to see more on utilizing 2D and how to set it up for maximum visibility for us po folk!
I like the fact that you cruise around and explain each thing as it comes access your history, most fish finder videos point out a couple arches, bait fish, and maybe mention a hard it soft bottom but don't really explain how they're coming to that conclusion.... I'd like to see more about mapping myself... And yes side imaging too.... And I'm sure there's more about regular and down scan to learn.... Oh and another video on say setting up your fish finder to get the best picture, or clearest picture of what's going on down there.... Thanks for the videos in all respects you rock
Finally someone does a FF video the right way. Keep em coming fluke, I appreciate what you’ve done for the fishing community! I met you in 2016 at Gander Mtn in Arlington, Tx. You were traveling around with the G Squad.
This guy is freaking weird..
When you say "12 feet or deeper I can fish right now, any more shallow and I'll come back later", is that because you're running a motor? If you're paddling does that depth change?
Hi from deep south GA. Great vid, most of the fish finder vids use stored graphs. I like the fact that yours was splashed and dirty just like mine stays on my kayak despite my best efforts, LOL. I think more of helping people ID fish is going to be the ticket, especially those of us that pond/small lake fish.
You covered everything except determining where to cast based on what the screen shows (that's always confusing). That being said, it's one of the best demonstrations/explanations I've watched. I'm going to try it out next time I'm on the boat. Thank you.
Great video! Although I'm still clueless, this video shed some light for me. My Q is do you always make casts to areas that you'd just passed on? IOW, you don't cast to places where your fish finder hasn't been to. Is that correct? Also, can't you just drop the bait from your boat rather than making a cast? I've seen some folks do just that and if that's the case when do you decide to drop a bait directly below your boat? Thank you so much for your time and God bless!
More boat vids would be awesome
Awesome video, like all the rest. Thank you for breaking everything down I've never really understood depth finders until now. I have a lowrance hook 2 7 I'm about to put on my yak and start fishing tournaments. Thanks for all the tips and advise keep up the great work Gene.
So, does a kayak go fast enough for side imaging? I just ordered my first fishing kayak and want to put a sonar on it. Also, would you recommend a lowrance for mapping? You mentioned you weren’t too big on the raymarine for that task.
I can’t contribute a fish catch to my Lowrance Hook2. Hopefully I will understand it eventually. Here lately I don’t even see a lot of life on mine.
Enjoyed video. My biggest frustration with bass fishing is finding the fish. Tons of videos of anglers catching fish, but not nearly as many videos about finding the fish. At times it seems overwhelming when looking at all the water on a given fishery. These type of videos definitely help the learning curve - please continue. Thanks
Gene Great Video, Very Educational...pumps me up to get out there and apply what you teach. Keep on doing what you're doing.
Something I’ll like to see which is hard to predict is if that lake is almost all grass and weeds on the bottom and using a finder is a just orange or a blur, how can you find the fishes on the bottom!? But love the video! Learned a lot from it!
so what is that little button on your hat?
I specifically typed "Flukemaster Fish finder" because I know he is the best at explaining! Thanks Gene!
Great video Gene! I have bought a decent fish finder this year (Humminbird Helix 7) for my kayak this year and have yet to catch a bass off shore with it. Will use these tips and see what i can do. Next video I would like to see is you show the fish on your FF and than cast at them and catch them.
what's with the unreasonably long musical intro?
I allow my 16 year old son to have full creative authority when he edits my videos. It allows him to improve his skills as an editor.
Excellent. Thank you
How do you know that you are casting onto the spots you found earlier?
He stated that he marked the spots on the GPS part of the unit
great video. it helps out alot
Great video, Gene! especially for us newbies. you did a wonderful job with helping us understand what is going on under the water.
thanks.
What I want to see more of is ME catching fish (LOL) (North Carolina) Great explanation.
Thanks for the help I like that lake to but ever since I started kayak fishing there I've yet to catch a fish there anymore lol. I have a lowrance now so hopefully this helps.
Gene, there are lots of choices for bass fishing content on youtube. I consistently find myself coming back to your channel to learn. Thank you sir, another great video here!
Would love too know the setting you have it set at like sensitivity, manual or auto for depth and chart speed they all play a roll and just when I think i got it figured out because I see what i feel is a fish and drop down on it and catch one but then may not be able to do it again super frustrating. Great video
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I learned a LOT and think I'll be able to catch tons more fish than I traditionally have.
Best fish finder video Ive seen.
Great video man thank you the info about the thermo Cline is my biggest takeaway I know it's there but didn't know I could use my graph to see it I can't wait to get on the water and look at this
Have you used a scupper hole transducer kit, if so are they any good or should I just use the retractable arm type?
Gene, what would you pick? Raymarine element 7” or Lowrance Hook reveal 9”?
As always great job..................
Excellent vid, very informative. Just got into boating and you answered a lot of my remaining questions.
Hi, can I contact you by email? We would like to invite you to test our fishing product
