This was a different pace & format but I found it helpful. The way you were "thinking out loud" helped understand your process & I know more about using electronics than before. Yes you're a good fisherman and have been super successful but you're also a really skilled teacher (which is probably why you have over 371,000 subscribers!)
This was awesome! I think it would be good to mix in some lure recommendations (depending on the features you see) as well as some fishing to show how to break down a lake and establish a pattern. Keep up the great work!
Very informative video, would definitely like to see more on utilizing electronics more efficiently. As you touched on, perhaps for those who do not have side imaging and some of the newer features, perhaps some content with just DSI or traditional sonar would be of great use for those of us in that catagory. I guess a more updated version of your older "How to use less expensive sonars" video. (Not sure if I got the title right). Again, thank you for the time and effort.
Wow. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Been waiting on this video for 3 years. I bought a helix 5 and i now realize i wasn’t using is correctly. Please keep making these as they help me so much!!!
I really enjoyed the video Gene. I currently have a Humminbird Helix 5 without GPS or SI. I think it would be awesome to see a video on how you adjust contrast and sensitivity to get the clearest and most accurate picture with 2D sonar and what you think the best strategy for finding fish without SI for those of us who couldn’t quite break the cost of entry for a better (more useful) unit. Really appreciate the time you put in and content you provide everyone.
Great basic video for pond fisherman. If the next video could have more cover. Something like all grass or an area with stumps / lay downs. Just doing one type of cover at a time. You could even make a playlist. This video being the first to go over bottom contour and locating where fish are at depth wise
I just bought a fish finder for my yak, this video is perfect timing! I could use any and all help. Something I struggle with is deciding what lure/ rig I should throw and when. I understand I’m just one person but that would help me out a ton.
I can't like this enough. I just got two garmin 7 SV and I want to understand how I can find fish. Please do an extensive series on how to find fish, with a fish finder! Lake Chickamauga is huge, I need all the help I can get!
Very educational! Agree with the comments about fishing tips based on the structure you see on the fish finder and fishing the area to show technique. Awesome video!
Hey Gene, I watch your videos all the time but this one is my all time favorite. I’m probably going to watch it again. You’re doing exactly what I was trying to do this past weekend. I was swapping between side imaging and down but I think I’ll set it up like you have. This was a fun video. I’m trying to learn about establishing the pattern so appreciate the information!
Thanks for the help. I saltwater fish and stay on rivers and inlets mostly. I had been using 2d mostly in 10 to 40 foot depths. I can really see how my side scan can be used. Especially in 5 to 10 foot of water.
I just got side imaging for the first time this week. Came on my new boat. I plan on upgrading it, but this video really helped me understand what I'm looking at! Thank you!
Really helpful video thank you. Any other tools you use as far as apps or maps for locating spots? Even if you don’t use them any tools you would recommend to people newer to fishing?
I want to find fish in front of my boat. Where should I aim my transducer? And where does it read from. The flat side or the curve part. Im having trouble understanding where does the transducer read
Love it fluke! Just about anybody can throw a lure and catch a fish. But finding those fish to catch is the tricky part for me. Especially fishing clarks hill.
Great video Gene! Please do a few more like this one over underwater structures. I agree with some of the other commenters concerning once you find a good spot, why you choose the lure you use and then fish the location. Again, great informative video! Thanks for putting it together.
Very helpful. Liked the map, down imaging and sidescan multi-screen views. Really helped understand boat position relative to the map with the imaging. Didn't mind the absence of actual fishing at all. Maybe mix in some "how to fish this scenario" after several more videos like this one. Great idea. Keep these coming.
Excellent video, Gene. Thanks very much. Concur with the pencil suggestion from David. I'm in Florida, and the lakes are so shallow that a fish finder isn't useful a lot of the time. Will take my boat out on the river and practice with it using your video as my tutorial. Outstanding video - as always!
Absolutely fantastic! I've always wanted a video on electronics IN A KAYAK... there's a bunch of good How-To's from a bass boat, but at different speeds than we see from a kayak. This was really great and I do hope you continue! My question would be: The black space on the sidescan, I understood to be the depth under the boat. When the return starts its generally (looking at the scale on top) at the same "depth" as the depth indicator on the top left of your graph (15' deep on the graph, "return" after the black starts 1/2 way to the 30 mark on SS). Therefore, a brush pile at "30 feet" on SS isn't really 30 feet to the left or right... its "30 - your current depth" or in my example: 15' feet away. Am I thinking about that correctly? In essence... if we see something on SS and wonder how far away it is from the boat, take the SS "length" marker and subtract your current depth. If thats right, the SS "range" is a little misleading as we would typically over-cast the target. Hope that question makes sense. Thanks!!
Dude, awesome, really never understood how to look at a fish finder other than depth lol. Extremely informative. Trying to get through all your videos you have posted on here its taking a while.
Really enjoyed the video. I am a new owner of the RayMarine Element and this gave me more confidence in understanding what I am seeing on the screen. Thanks again and looking forward to more on this subject.
Perfect timing. I've been thinking that I need to utilize my electronics better, one way being spending some time charting out an area before I stop to fish it. Kind of clunky with a jon boat with the finder up front and me in the back but I feel like it'll make my time on the water more efficient.
Great info. How about incorporating how you arrive at the lake. Talk about the weather conditions, water clarity and then searching for the fish and where you “think” they should be. After finding them. How are you going to fish them? How do you fish the brush pile? I have a problem always getting hung up in brush piles whether i’m using a jig, worm, dropshot or crankbait etc. Doesn’t seam to make a difference. I would watch a series of videos with different conditions on different days. Thank you!
I absolutely love this video. I mainly fish electric only lakes. This video explained a lot. Now, granted i don't have the expensive fish finder, thus video was informative. It would be great if you could do one just using sonar and downscan
Great video Gene. I would like to see more explanation of use of a fish finder without SI as I will likely first buy an entry level without it. Also a follow up on understanding what we are actually seeing on the screen and how to interpret it. Agree with the pencil pointer idea also. ATB
Very good video Gene! As others have said I try to use some kind of a pointing device rather than your finger. Even a stick for a piece of grass if you forget to bring your pencil. And your comment about getting the biggest screen that you can afford is spot-on. I started out with a little 3 inch screen went to a helix 5 and now running a helix 7 and the next one will probably be a helix eight or nine out of my kayak. A nine is probably optimal for me out of my kayak but it's pricey.
Excellent video. Been looking for this kind of info about what you are seeing on a fish finder. Helps a lot. Confirmed what I was thinking, fish finders are not to handy for shallow water. Mine doesn't have side imaging. I am trying to fish Lake Okeechobee and the whole lake is shallow.
Fantastic video and can't wait for this series to expand! Your sonar tutorials are the best out there! A sincere thank you! Maybe in the future make a video addressing one of my biggest issues. After taking my eyes off the screen, trying to position myself within casting distance, looking out over the water, trying to find and setting up on my waypoints. Basically, tips in knowing where the structure / fish is located in reference to my marked "on screen" way point. I've started using buoys to help but I shouldn't need them with the technology we have. Any tips would be helpful and appreciated. Also, I realize it depends on depth but how far do you keep your Kayak off of the underwater structure..... say at 10-12 feet. Do you sometimes fish vertically and at what depth. Please, more side scan tutorials! Thanks again Gene! 👍 👍
This was helpful, thanks! I've recently installed my first "modern" fish finder with side and down scan and I've been trying to get better at using it.
I’m new working with fish finders. Only have down imagery. I have lots to play with on my hummingbird but thanks for the information. Not sure how to apply this yet. Looking forward to more videos on this topic.
I needed this video. I just got my first fish finder. A Lowrance Hook2 5 splitshot with Maps. I’m struggling to gain confidence in it and I could use more of this. I’m also in a kayak.
Hey man, I just want to say I like you. Infact, I look up to you. Ive tried so hard for a few months now trying to be good at fishing and ive took all your advice and put it to the test. In nearly 2 and a half months I've only got 1 bite using a white spinnerbait on braid with a swivel to fluorocarbon. Im going to try the fg knot and rig fluorocarbon to my braid properly.. i think im on the right track there. Im a slow learner but when I get committed I won't stop until im good at it and fishing ain't no different. As bad as I am at it and how long it has taken, because man I swear to you no joke in 2 and a half months fishing every single day for atleast 2 hours a day and only getting 1 bite is so frustrating yet I know it'll be worth it once I get it, I want to start a channel for stuff like this. Im one of those breeds of people whom arent good at much, i don't know i might be able to help others like me. Anyways when I finally catch my first bass you better believe I'll be blowing up your comments letting you know you helped me do it. This is way out there too but if you ever decided you wanted to make a video on the worst fisherman on youtube catch a fish, im 100% your guy.
This was a great video I thought it was very informative. I just bought a fish finder and I’ve been trying to figure out how to use it especially the down imagining.
I would like to see what bass look like on side imaging. You gotta do more of these. this really helps me. show some footage of also fishing those same places you graphed so we see how you target those areas.
Awesome! One of the best videos on using a fish finder I have seen. I do agree with other comments on using something other than your finger as a pointer :)
Great video. Would definitely would like to see more videos like this. Does the finding the depth of the baitfish work on highland reservoir lakes where smallmouth reside?
This was very informative. One suggestion (besides the pencil/stylus idea) would be to find a spot where you think there are fish, and then actually fish it, and show how you're fishing that spot based on what you're seeing on your fishfinder.
Great content. Electronics in kayak is really needed. I need more confidence selecting between screen choices when graphing new areas (side, down, or 2d), so this was helpful. This is a good foundation video for search, but one that demonstrates search-to-catch would complete the picture. Your real-time thought process is very helpful. Tips on music and pointer are good. Can you please share what size unit you run in your kayak? Thanks again!
Great video! I have 2 small fish finders I’m not a fan of and am in the market for a new, larger unit. I’d love to see info on reading the different color pallets. You talked briefly in the video about the difference in meaning of the color to the fish size. It would be great to have explanations on understanding these meanings
Liked the video and it definitely helps. Can you do one in a deeper lake where fish are holding in deeper water? I’d like to see how you find them and then how you fish for them. My lakes I fish are deep and I can’t figure out how to catch them once they get beyond 20 ft.
Seems like a good video on how you scope out an area. Unfortunately, as someone that's a rank beginner, I've got zero idea what I'm looking at or how you're figuring out what you're seeing is. But I understand this wasn't the point of this video, so all good. Was still interesting to see so Thank you! If you're inclined to do one, a "Fish Finder for Dummies" would be awesome. From a clueless dummy, here's what I'd be interested in: -What I'm seeing in each view? (I can't tell what orientation the down or side view is showing or where you are in the screen) -Is the "down view" a view of the spot as if you cut that section of lake in half and are looking from the side or is it a birds eye, top down view? -Is the "side view" actually a birds eye view with the boat being in between the to window panes on the screen? -Where are you on the down and side view screens? (as in: is your boat/sensor between the two side view screens? And in the down view, since the image is starting and coming in from the right side, is the very right side edge the part that's directly under your boat or is what is in the middle of the screen directly what's under you?) -What are the different colors and what do they tell you? -What are the different shades (black to bright) and what do they tell you? -How do you tell if something is a fish as apposed to a floating branch or plant? -How come, when you point out what is a fish, it looks so long and crescent shaped? (what you indicated was a bass looked like a cross section of an upside down shallow bowl) - Sometimes a tree laying on the bottom is pretty obvious, as a long straight line on the screen. But how can you tell what's a bunch of short plants and what's a bunch of scattered stone on the ground? -How do you tell when a hump is just deeper dirt or bed rock rising up out of the dirt/silt? -Can you tell what is firm/hard bottom and what is muck/light, loose silt? -If you didn't know that road was a road( because you know that area was dry land at one point and looked at an old road map), how'd you tell it's a road as apposed to just a linear dip or former creek channel? -When you saw the road, was the road surface the middle flat bit and the two higher piles either side the piled up gravel at the side of the road? I could probably come up with a 100 more questions, but I'm just hoping you've actually read this to this point. :) You've got a great knack for speaking and teaching so would love a tutorial for beginners from you, with plain language or at least describe what the terminology means. (You used the term "lay down"? I assume you meant a tree that's laying down on it's side?) I know it's tough to catch all the terms you use, as it's second nature. I forget this to when showing someone how to weld, so I have to really be conscious of it. XD And if you're not interested in a dummies guide to finders, do you know of a YT video that someone else has done that's good? Thanks so much for your time reading this and making the teaching videos you make. They are an immense help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Regards, Bert
Great video it’s nice to get this info from a kayak. Since Not all of us have motors how does slower speeds affect what we are seeing? I’m running a hook2-7 triple shot.
How were you finding the creek channel on side imaging. I use the contour lines on the navigation maps to find the creek channel. Very informative video.
Coming from an angler who has never used a fish finder or anything other than a depth finder, I like the pointer idea, also making a series specific to each quality in fish finders and how to best use them (contour and depth scanning, sonar and how to read it, down imaging, side imaging, etc all separate videos) One of the biggest questions I had is how to read the ratios of each chart if that makes sense. Like how much of each image on the screen correlates to actual physical distance/depth etc. I would assume speed has a lot to do with it, but is it something you have to develop a feel for?
I needed this video, thanks. Would you search the same way regardless of time of year and temperature? In cold weather will you still look for bait fish and then fish at that depth. I ask because I don't see many bait fish in winter. Thanks again.
Awesome video. This is what I needed Im one of the few that fishes after that morning bite in the summer. Troll for hours. Thanks Fluke your the best online
Thank you for this video, I have been thinking of upgrading to side scan over my original fish finder. Super helpful to see this in real time. Maybe try a different lake with more structure? I just wanted to see more different images. Appreciate it!
Great tutorial. Can you explain side imaging? I'm trying to see in my head what the side scan is showing on the screen. A lot of the brush and stumps were 30ish feet from the kayak and beyond that was black. Why?
What are the group of dots in the solid black on s/v and then how can you tell what’s suspended and what’s on the bottom? TIA and love you stuff. Do you do mentoring for fee?
Great info! Possibly get some recommendations on the best fish finders in different price ranges, I’m currently running a helix 5. What are you using I’m this video? Possibly do a video like this with a grassy lake. Have a great day and keep the awesome content coming.
great timing. im switching over to a garmin that does contour mapping. now i have a better idea of how to execute that. and i agree with the pointer suggestion. break out the chopsticks! haha
Awesome ! It was a little hard for me to see the fish though . But thank you ! Next time can we see the lowrance fish finder screen? I know each system is different , the structures were hard to see until you got to the tree then I could see them better . Still great video !
Just changed to Ray Marine Element and Axiom Pro 9" from Lowrance HDS 9 for both for my 2 Bonafides. Love this video. If this lake is in Ga. where are the DINOSAURS ?
I second the pencil thing. if you want to have background music to break up monotony make sure it's barely audible. use headphones to listen to audio levels for BG music. PC speakers won't be as accurate as headphones. I used to work for NBC News in NY. when making vids try to have an outline of what you want to cover so you can be more precise on what your trying to convey. if there is any way to shield the glare that would help also. You may also want to do a picture in picture off the front of your kayak for occasional views. I heard you point out things and then lift the camera off the finder. just use a second camera. other than those tips right now this was extremely helpful. I have watched other videos for fish finders but you did what someone teaching a noob would do. it was great. thanks! tight lines!
Excellent tutorial. One suggestion. Rather than using your finger as a pointer, use a lead pencil or stylus which you can hold to the side and point. This would obscure less of the screen. Thanks for your efforts.
Please don't use music. At least for me, it's distracting. :-) Good video for me since we have a lake like that (flat). Thanks for taking the time to explain how you do it.
I would like to see more on using a fish finder on a kayak i don't have a motor on mine just use a paddle i have side imagining on mine and I know speed plays an important role like u said. is 2 mph ok can you go even slower and still read it id like to see more videos on that and what settings ud recommend when using a kayak.
Side imaging is great but as you said it is expensive.I am starting to do more fishing and trying to use my down imaging fish finder more to find fish not just the bottom of the lake. Problem is I dont know what fish are supposed to look like on a down imaging fish finder and was hoping this video was going to help. You spent so much time on side imaging. Ive heard that they a dots or dots with what looks like a arrow pointing up. just more down imaging fish examples would be helpful. Thanks and I will keep watching.
Thanks man. Once I get to a lake with more stuff on the bottom and more structure changes I’ll talk more about that. This lake was not the right lake for that.
Thank you! Great video! I learned more than I could've imagined. I really wanted to see you fish for some of those fish you marked. Only constructive criticism I have is drop the annoying background music. No need for music in a video this good.
When you see small bumps on the DI screen relative to the bottom going up or down a point is that bass or could that be any type of fish? I see it all the time so i stop and fish for it but never catch more than 1 fish sometimes none at all... How many fish do you normally get out of a tree? Like if you see 10 fish in a tree and you pull one bass out of it how many times do you keep throwing trying to catch another?
Gene, Caught some 3-4 pounders lastnight using the swim jig and paddle tail. gaining confidence in it! i appreciate your efforts Gene! youve got a lifetime subscriber. -josh

Fishfinder videos as they pertain to kayak fishing are few and far between. Thanks for this!
This was awesome! I think it would be good to mix in some lure recommendations (depending on the features you see) as well as some fishing to show how to break down a lake and establish a pattern. Keep up the great work!
I love that suggestion. Thanks.

Thank you for this, I have a fish finder but haven't used it enough to know what I'm looking for or at, so I found this very educational!

Nice. I love it.
I like how you broke it all down. Showing us what things look like instead of just telling us.
I just purchased a Lowrance HDS Live; this 3 year old video was very helpful.
More to come very soon.
I just bought a fish finder for my yak, this video is perfect timing! I could use any and all help. Something I struggle with is deciding what lure/ rig I should throw and when. I understand I’m just one person but that would help me out a ton.
Please keep doing these videos. I would love to see you do the same on a lake with grass. This was helpful and something that no one else is doing.
Great video. Do more like this on lakes with different profiles please.

Just a suggestion... Next time use a pencil as a pointer. Your hand covered up to much of the screen instead of your whole hand.. Hope that helps.😊
I'd really love to see it all put together. 1. Find the fish on electronics, 2. discuss the bait choices, 3. catch the fish. All in one video.
That’s what I’ve been waiting for. Got my first John boat. I need to watch this one in full and repeat 😂 good job brother
I want to find fish in front of my boat. Where should I aim my transducer? And where does it read from. The flat side or the curve part. Im having trouble understanding where does the transducer read

Best dam video I’ve seen. Nice job Gene! Helping the fishin community out-thanks
Good video! Gives some good info on how to use side imaging to put together a pattern on where fish might be located.
Awesome video. Super super helpful as someone who is just learning to read electronics. I definitely hope you do more of these
Awesome video! Definitely want to see more especially more about where those marks are in relation to the boat
Will do!

Great video. Alot of times I see fish on my screen but never seem to catch them. What should you try first, vertical fish, drop shot?
Thanks
This was a great video I thought it was very informative. I just bought a fish finder and I’ve been trying to figure out how to use it especially the down imagining.
I would like to see what bass look like on side imaging. You gotta do more of these. this really helps me. show some footage of also fishing those same places you graphed so we see how you target those areas.
Awesome! One of the best videos on using a fish finder I have seen. I do agree with other comments on using something other than your finger as a pointer :)
Great video would love to see more videos like this with some fishing mixed in just to show how you attack different situations.
Great video. Thanks for the clear explanations.
Nice breakdown G! You are the man. Love my electronics.
Thanks Gene. I understand a little more now. Can't wait till the next one.
Thanks for a great video. Helps clear up a lot of what I've seen. I'll try to incorporate next chance I get
Bro this taught me a lot! More more more videos like this. Awesome!!!
Great video. Got a Hook Reveal on my SS107 a week ago and this is helpful. I would like a video with more focus on Down Imaging
Awesome video would like to see more. Especially down Imaging and the contour mapping. Thanks
From a clueless dummy, here's what I'd be interested in:
-What I'm seeing in each view? (I can't tell what orientation the down or side view is showing or where you are in the screen)
-Is the "down view" a view of the spot as if you cut that section of lake in half and are looking from the side or is it a birds eye, top down view?
-Is the "side view" actually a birds eye view with the boat being in between the to window panes on the screen?
-Where are you on the down and side view screens? (as in: is your boat/sensor between the two side view screens? And in the down view, since the image is starting and coming in from the right side, is the very right side edge the part that's directly under your boat or is what is in the middle of the screen directly what's under you?)
-What are the different colors and what do they tell you?
-What are the different shades (black to bright) and what do they tell you?
-How do you tell if something is a fish as apposed to a floating branch or plant?
-How come, when you point out what is a fish, it looks so long and crescent shaped? (what you indicated was a bass looked like a cross section of an upside down shallow bowl)
- Sometimes a tree laying on the bottom is pretty obvious, as a long straight line on the screen.
You've got a great knack for speaking and teaching so would love a tutorial for beginners from you, with plain language or at least describe what the terminology means. (You used the term "lay down"? I assume you meant a tree that's laying down on it's side?) I know it's tough to catch all the terms you use, as it's second nature. I forget this to when showing someone how to weld, so I have to really be conscious of it. XD
And if you're not interested in a dummies guide to finders, do you know of a YT video that someone else has done that's good?
Thanks so much for your time reading this and making the teaching videos you make. They are an immense help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Regards,
Bert
Great video it’s nice to get this info from a kayak. Since Not all of us have motors how does slower speeds affect what we are seeing? I’m running a hook2-7 triple shot.
Man, I could watch this for hours!
How were you finding the creek channel on side imaging. I use the contour lines on the navigation maps to find the creek channel. Very informative video.
Great video. It always looks so easy on UA-cam, but when I get to the lake I never find the spots like that.
Long time coming. Thank you!
Love these types of videos. Thanks
Coming from an angler who has never used a fish finder or anything other than a depth finder, I like the pointer idea, also making a series specific to each quality in fish finders and how to best use them (contour and depth scanning, sonar and how to read it, down imaging, side imaging, etc all separate videos)
One of the biggest questions I had is how to read the ratios of each chart if that makes sense.
Thanks Mark. You are correct about the lake. It was very void of structure. I will definitely be doing my next one on a different lake.
Thank you!!!! I really enjoyed the video! I have always struggled to know what is what on my graphs!
Great video! Curious on why your voltage is jumping from 10.9 to 12-12.3?
Great tutorial. Can you explain side imaging? I'm trying to see in my head what the side scan is showing on the screen. A lot of the brush and stumps were 30ish feet from the kayak and beyond that was black. Why?
What are the group of dots in the solid black on s/v and then how can you tell what’s suspended and what’s on the bottom? TIA and love you stuff. Do you do mentoring for fee?
Definitely wouldn’t mind more of this.
What is the smallest screen size you would recommend. I have an HDS 7 and I struggle to see fish and cover. Great videos 👍thanks
Just changed to Ray Marine Element and Axiom Pro 9" from Lowrance HDS 9 for both for my 2 Bonafides. Love this video. If this lake is in Ga. where are the DINOSAURS ?
Love to see more of this thanks vary informative...
Awesome. Thanks. My only worry about picture in picture is most people watch on their phone and that will make it hard for them to see.
@@Flukemaster then just quickly swap full screen. might make your life just a bit easier than lifting up the camera.
@@Flukemaster and yes I mostly watch you on my phone so PIP might be rough enev with a 6.5 inch phone :)
Thanks buddy I think you did a great job man, really helpful🤜🏻
This was informative. I enjoyed it.
Excellent tutorial. One suggestion. Rather than using your finger as a pointer, use a lead pencil or stylus which you can hold to the side and point. This would obscure less of the screen. Thanks for your efforts.
Great video sir! Very helpful!
Glad you think so!
Please don't use music. At least for me, it's distracting. :-) Good video for me since we have a lake like that (flat). Thanks for taking the time to explain how you do it.
That’s one of those damned if I do, damned if I don’t things.
@@Flukemaster So true!
I definitely need to see more vids like this.
I subscribed because you are not trying to sell lures and equipment.
I would like to see more videos like this.
-josh
