Every Wednesday when the world seems bleak, the crew of ComicPop return to the couch and… RISE ABOVE IT ALL! On a more serious note, this episode of Back Issues is a comfort as I recover from Covid.
I love how obviously best of friends the whole comic pop crew is that random moments like "i think ben is expertly hitting on sal" can happen in the middle of us all laughing at a retelling of a comic. Really has the feeling of just hanging out with your buds.
Spider-Man: "I've broken my code. If I kill one person, I will kill that person every time." Batman: "That's not-" Superman: grabs Batman's shoulder, shakes head
The Lizard has never looked more intimidating. For all the criticism the writing gets, one thing that really works is just how much Peter is falling to pieces. The scene when he thinks he's killed Lizard the first time and he's begging forgiveness and clutching his aching head is really powerful.
22:59 Neal Adams told Kevin Smith on his podcast that he saw an intern at DC shredding original art because they'd run out of space to store it in their main office.
Well, they did say they know how big comic pages of original comic art are. They’re huge, there are thousands produced monthly, shipping costs a lot and the companies have paid for it already. The people making the decisions not to archive were Adams’ era - John Romita Sr, Carmine Infantino et al. Guys who worked in the era of newspaper comics. Of course the situation is better now! Artists email work to Marvel, DC etc, keep the original art and sell to collectors. Must be nice to be paid twice for your work.
Tiffany describes Todd's artistry like Forge's tech building. He just DOES it by doesn't know how he does it, he just thinks and is compelled. Lol. McFarlane is a mutant confirmed.
19:51 this gag takes on all the other jokes in this video and dares to....rise above it all 27:33 dance break with Sal? 😂 53:52 my christmas card this year
1:07:25 I've never heard this image of Lizard described that way, despite poking fun at it many times myself, and I just couldn't stop laughing at that. Bravo.
Hearing Tiffany talk about Marvel and DC’s lack of preservation for their original material reminds me a lot of how Toei has handled Dragon Ball. So many key frames, production artworks, and fully painted cels have been tossed into the trash or sold off. It’s so weird.
I cannot believe a franchise as ubiquitous and monumental has been mishandled for so long in such absurd ways. The anime side at least is a complete disaster. Sad that's not worth the investment for Toei to rectify that.
It's so weird that after all this time till we still has issues with the dragon Ball anime, super notoriously add so many issues and when they were finally getting a decent schedule it ended , and one piece has so many pacing issues
Congratulations to your 10th anniversary and greetings from Germany (excuse maybe some rough english). I love your videos and have rewatched some of my favorite episodes around ten times. I love your way of presenting a comic story by not only telling it in a fun way but also giving a lot of context. Sals knowledge and inside into the comicworld will never stop to impress me. You guys brought me back into the hobby of collecting comics by showing me their value again after falling out of them as a teenager a couple of years ago. In the last two year I started to gather a lot of the most seminal Superhero Comics, especially Batman and Spider-Man (still my Favourites after all the years. Stories like Sandman or Saga are now between some of my favourite literature-based stories ever. So Thanks to you and all the great hours of entertainment.
This has to be one of my favourite episodes ever (and I’m including the ones I listened to in an ICU room coming round from a coma) Why? Because this fuses the history, art and story of comics! And it works so well in this episode, just naturally. Re: original art, I believe Marvel had a policy of trying to return original art to the artists if they can? I guess it’s all digital now so they don’t need to, but I did see a video of that somewhere on UA-cam. This applies to all artists except Jack Kirby it seems 😅
Just went through this the other day. This is a really dark story for Spider-man, feels more in tone for Batman or Spawn and you could see McFarlane's Spawn starting to hit the page.
I really want you guys to do an episode on the Hawk&Dove 1988 mini series. I get that no one else is probably thinking that though haha I love you guys!
I absolutely love the redux episodes because we get new thoughts and feelings on the story or the people who made the story. And I was amazed with how huge that book is.
I got ASM 302 from Mike Zapcic about 10(?)-ish years ago at the Stash in Red Bank. Totally made my day and was my first introduction to Todd’s artwork!
Erik Larsen will probably always be my Spider-Man artist of choice, and I always liked how Todd would draw masked characters and monsters, along with how he would compose panels, but I was never a fan of how he drew normal/unmasked people...they usually looked as though they had no bones, were made of Silly Putty, and were in various stages of melting.
Whoa, so hearing how much the phrase "Rise above it all" gets repeated in this book makes me think of something. In the Spiderman Musical Turn off the Dark (which I saw on Broadway as a kid) they used "Rise above it" as the obligatory twist on the classic "great power, great responsibility" motto, and it was an important enough phrase that it got a major song and then a redux. I have to imagine this storyline is where they got that from.
People say the big sales were because of the collector boom, and that may have been a part of it. But as a kid at the time, I really was big into Todd McFarlane and Jim Lee's art on Spider-Man and X-Men. They were the first artists I actually knew by name and could recognize their work. I bought Spider-Man 1 and X-Men 1 as soon as I saw them, not because I was thinking I would resell those later on and get rich, but because I thought the art and the characters were really cool and I wanted to own those comics to keep for myself. If the Avengers or the Fantastic Four had relaunched with a new number 1 in the early '90s, I don't think kid-me would have bothered with those.
I absolutely love Todd Mcfarlanes art. He is so damn good. Especially when he draws Spider-Man. The giant eyes and the spaghetti webbing. It's so fucking good!
Continuity between sister shows. You were talking about 90's Spider-Man revamp and you brought up the Todd MacFarlane Spider-Man lizard storyline. Nice.
Wooooo! I'm excited for this! Spider-Man in McFarlane's art, the Lizard on a rampage, Calypso behind it all! I have the Todd Mcfarlane Spider-Man trade paperback and I've been wanting to read it. Gonna do it after this!
Another great episode of comic pop. I really like how you guys both praise and critique these issues. Does a good job of elevating the video from what may seem like a simple summary into becoming an analysis of this moment in time of comic history. Not to mention you guys are just a funny now as you were 10 years ago (and more so). P.S. Hey Sal, not trying to cancel you in any way or anything like that but apparently “peanut gallery” is considered a bit of an insensitive term due to it being used to mock the cheaper theater seats often used by poorer black patrons. So maybe avoid using it as to not get in trouble in the future. Just thought I’d extend the info in case.
I've been rewatching A LOT of Back Issues while at work, and i just want to say. Please make the Mecha Spider a YT Short from the Kraven's last hunt episode. I think that's the funniest shit i've heard in a while.
It's one of my favourite covers of Spider-Man, if not THE favourite Spider-Man Torment #1! Todd Mcfarlane's art is truly unique, like every artist you have some not so good art but there are way more iconic pieces to make up for it and Todd definitely has plenty to be remembered. For John Romita Jr and Todd Mcfarlane are the true definition of what Spider-Man should look like in the comics, unfortunately today's art never does.
Ngl, after maulding it over, I really love the cutscene of a hand just slamming down hard on the redux button. Felt more of a comedic impact kind of tone, IMO.
To be fairJ.M Demattis has said that Kraven’s last hunt, started off as a Batman story, but nobody would pick it up, and the pitch kept bouncing around u til he was writing Spidey. It’s funny how some stories are kinda fluid in writers Brains.
@@Volvagia1927 I don’t think there was a specific villain in mind at the time, it was more about Batman is buried alive, though I will reread the foreword in the TPB to confirm.
I’ve heard it said some writers just tell the same story over and over. I think it would be interesting to look at McFarlane’s run on Spawn, see if there’s a parallel storyline and compare and contrast their execution since they’re years of experience apart.
I want to give a shout to Art Gallery of Hamilton in Ontario CA. Because that's an whole museum of sequential comics from Canadian history. If they can do it, Marvel and DC definitely can.
that being the image of Spider-man Sal thinks of is soo interesting. thats not at all what I wouldve guessed. its a very uniqe image for sure. I definitely think of Spider-Man on the 90s cartoon logo, or one of Bagleys awesome covers from Ultimate when I think of Spider-Man

Todd's a great writer when he wants to be lmao
Everytime “Rise Above” was said all I could think of was the Spider-man broadway musical and how it had not one, but two songs titled “Rise Above.”
I kinda like the song, to be honest
same here
The in depth analysis is just top notch, differentiating between the omniscient narrator and Spider-man's thoughts by shadows, very nice catch!
Idk if people will agree with me or not but the Mcfarlane spaghetti webs are the best webs
Easily
Mad addicting to draw too
Agree
Was that style of webbing in Web of Shadows? I never got to play that game but the traversal looked awesome with those stringy webs
