I just bought the Catalina satin antique jazz kit and that one also those sound terrific. 7-ply mahogany, typical warmth you wanna hold on to when playing the softer music. Even when playing them in higher tuning, all of the shell resonate amazing, which gives you a nice and smooth tone fade.
WOW!
the Brooklyn kit resonates way more than the USA Custom...Personally i think I would go for the Brooklyn series! I love the sustain of the toms and the crazy low end from the bassdrum and it would suit my playingstyle perfectly!
i like the idea but i would like a faster side-by-side comparrison. instead waiting like 5 seconds in between each hit
I love this comparison. Great job fellas!
I wish you would actually play more than a single hit. Both sets sound great. The snare head can make a big difference in tone. The USA Custom has a better sounding snare but the Brooklyn has great sounding toms and bass drum. I just ordered a Brooklyn set a few days ago. I think I will like them.
I recently bought a set of Brooklyn. The reason I chose them I took the die cast hoops off of a USA custom kit and put the 302 hoops on.To my ears not much if any difference in sound. The only major
Difference between the two kits are the hoops, and the finish options. The rest of the hardware is the same.I think there was about 600.00 dollar difference in price.Gretsch did a great job.I see they are offering more finish options these days.Try them out in person,it's very hard to give you the TRUE sound through the internet. Hope this helps the undecided. THAT GREAT GRETSCH SOUND.!!!
This exactly the sort of comparison that I'd like to see more of. Differences in brand names with comparatively priced sets would also be interesting.
We posted those as well. The titles are "Gretsch USA Custom Bop Kit (14" x 18", 8" x 12", 14" x 14", 5" x 14")" and "Gretsch Brooklyn Jazz Kit (16" x 18", 8" x 12", 14" x 14", 5" x 14")."
I like the Brooklyn bop kit sound
🤓🥁👍🏼
To my ears there's a huge difference:All USA Custom drums are singing more than the Brooklyns.
Poplar might be "cheap" wood, but it's partially responsible for what we consider to be the "vintage" sound. The USA Custom is made from a shell configuration that may be considered more "high end" than the traditional maple/poplar/maple shell configuration, but sound is what matters, and the sound of the Brooklyns is preferred by many.
Also recall that the Brooklyn kits are made from USA maple (and I'm assuming USA) poplar. The Rockers were import kits.
i am using a high end audio system to listento yt and prefer the tone of the USA drums and I think that if you dont use a really fine audio system you wont be able which one of the to you like more
permatone head chokes the sound.... what would it sound like with SAME HEADS / thanks
Thank you! Great comparison!
This is how Gretsch drums are supposed to sound. They have a dry knock and a lot of presence. It's the sound that made them famous. I definitely prefer the sound of the USA Customs, although that Brooklyn snare sounds good.
What's funny is a commenter here said he liked the "openness" of the USA's compared to the more "focused" sound of the Brooklyn's while Gretsch artist Mark Schulman said in a Gretsch factory video the exact opposite thing!
I can hear some subtle differences in this video, but I think once you play them in a band situation very, very few people would hear any differences.
Thanks Sean!
I think the floor toms are markedly different and the 16" depth in the Brooklyn kick gives it more depth. But I believe the USA custom kick from is punchier. I would love to have both kits.
Tunung does play a factor. I'm a Gretsch lover, and truth be told aside from the bass drum,I was shocked that I think the Brooklyn snare and 12" tom sounded better for sure!! Floor tom is kinda close to call.
The Brooklyn toms seem to have shorter resonance. I'd put that up to the poplar mixed in.
Question: How do each of these sound and compare when close mic'd live? I'm debating either the USA Custom or the Brooklyn for being my next big drum set purchase to gig with and I am having a hard time deciding. None of the local shops have either for me to hear in person. Based on the online videos (like this one), I prefer the sound of the Brooklyn, but like many videos of the Brooklyn it's recorded with room microphone(s) as opposed to each drum being mic'd. Based on the videos, I believe the Brooklyns will sound GREAT in a situation where the drums are not mic'd. Just wondering how these and/or the USA Customs compare when mic'd live. What's your opinion?
Honestly, in a mic'ed-up live situation, it would be difficult to perceive the nuances between various shell types. If you like the sound of the Brooklyns, I'd go with them. They're great drums and cost less than the USA Customs. I hope this helps!
Boston Drum Center great point!
Should have turned the snares off for the toms and bass drum.
i would like to hear a comparison to the catalina and usa custom, that would be interesting :)
i think Jerome's a great drummer!
What cymbals are those?
absolutely zero resonance in those toms. try taking the 12 out of the snare stand, and mount to proper L-rod to highlight the potential resonance.
id consider re-tuning those bad boys as well.
The difference is $600.00 or so, for the kits pictured.
Great demo, I like the Brooklyn kit better.
Finally a real review...no like those memphis drum shop ones
Now do the same thing between the Brooklyn and Catalina Club Jazz!
the USA custom snare sounds good but other than that i prefer the Brooklyn
The flanged rims go best on the tom while the snare would fare better with the flanged rims.
More body to the USA - more focused / attack on the Brooklyn... My heart s still beating for the USA Custom
I think the Brooklyn model looks more cheaper than my old model Renown maple, My drums have a die cast hoops with better lugs and finish. just My personal preference.
what cymbals are being used in this video?
Zildjian K Constantinople.
You can't compare Brooklyns vs. Rockers just because they both use maple/poplar. There is no contest between the two.
USA customs would be my choice based off that sound comparison
I would suggest switching to decaf.
What i learned? Save thousands and get the Brooklyn. I'am sold on the Brooklyn, imo.
Id rather hear a skilled drummer playing each of the sets.
Just Brooklyn
Am I deaf or the only one not to hear a difference?
epic answer haha
usa sounds better for actual jazz musical context Brooklyn sounds better to drummers because they're listening to themselves instead of the song ;D
Brooklyn
A "few" bucks more? Funny.
U cant be serious, Brooklyn all day ! Moongels not Nec. Kid !
Well not sure I'd call you deaf, but I heard a difference.
Nice cans but overpriced
whack that freaking snare!
brucethedrummer yeah man, was thinkin the same. whack that damn snare!!
take off the snarewhen you play all the drums!
Brooklyn sounds better.
gretsch. by alot.
I don't want to be that negative guy on the internet but I just have to say that this is the worst comparison video I've ever seen. Just play.
wow that was so boring i almost fell asleep.
