I absolutely understand gear acquisition syndrome. Im in Tucson Arizona, and few months back I was scrolling through the ads and for the heck of it I decided to look to see if there was anything posted in Phoenix, and I saw a 1961 3 ply Mahogany Slingerland kit in 13,16,26 for an amazing deal. Without even a second thought I sent an email and I was on my way driving 2 hours in the pouring rain, calling out of work because the calling was so heavy. The guy was selling it so cheap because he was leaving the states the next day to start a family with his new wife abroad. I get the kit home and immediately set it up, but have to wait till morning. It was rewrapped, had modern spurs put on it, but the shells were right and the badges and rest of the hardware are all there. I can’t help but smile every time I get behind and play that kit.
As a board certified physician, who doesn't like to self diagnose, I have to say I truly suffer from Gear Acquisition Syndrome! Thanks for helping me identify the diagnosis, Mike!
Oh man this was sooooo good. I’m glad to hear that I am not the only one with gear acquisition issues and I love the fact you have stories behind everything. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Hey Mike, Ordered a new Gretsch drum set in 1973. 2 x 24", 9 x 13 x 14, 16 x16 with a 5 x 14 Chrome over brass.,All in Silver Sparkle with bags. I paid $750.00. Played that kit until 1987 when I traded it in for a Yamaha DX7 LOL. I did use the DX7 extensively, but that was a marvelous Drum set. The DX7 is worth @$250 now. Who knows what my kit is worth. I love your New Old Gretsch Kit. Excellent Video.!!!
I was In Nashville for vacation last year, while there watched Mike’s snare drum video where he mentioned stories behind drums and Nelson’s drum shop. I went there the next day and purchased two snare drums that I had been searching out for several years. Absolutely love them and now I have my own story about two great drums that I own. Absolutely fantastic drum shop! Thanks Mike!
I bought a kit used back in October from a guy who knew nothing about the kit, other than he said it was 20 years old. It has Gretsch badge, so that was good enough for me. However, it was very difficult to track down what exactly I had, once I realized that the badge did not say "USA" on it. At first I thought I had bought a knock off, and was angry...but I believe now, it is an old Taiwan Catalina kit, circa 2000. On close inspection, the workmanship is excellent. One of the mounting rims is a little bent, and some of the screws were bent as well, because the floor tom is suspended to a heavy ass cymbal stand. After putting new heads on it and replacing the cheap snare he had (dont know where the original snare went) it sounds pretty good. Now, if only I could play it as good as you! Thanks...that is one beautiful kit there.
My man, what a cool story. In the end the only thing that matters is whether the kit is inspiring to play or not. I’m picky about finishes so I have no problem saying “looks matter” to me when it comes to kits. If I walk in the room and can’t resist the urge to play a kit then it belongs in my collection. Catalina or Broadkaster, if it’s a joy to play then it’s priceless.
That kit sounds beautiful! Truly a beautiful kit Mike. I love the idea for this series. Being exposed to different drums and their sounds, with stories added is a way cool idea for videos. I look forward to the tour of your collection and the stores behind the drums you have. Great story! SO cool to see the success of a prior student. Perhaps the sweetest part of being a teacher.
I bought a vintage Ludwig set that day (the day of your clinic) at Nelson's ... 60's 12, 13, 16, 22 in black diamond pearl. It is exactly as you say. I continue to play things I don't usually play just to hear the drums ... they sound SO GOOD!
I remember thinking about what this kit must sound like when you talked about it on DRUM and well... now I know. It definitely has that cool vintage sound. You're cinematography is awesome in this video BTW.
The exact same size kit I have...LOVE it! Although mine are Catalina series, and not as high-quality as this specific kit, but all Gretsch drums have that Gretsch sound. Gretsch just makes fantastic drums no matter which series they are, and this jazz sized kit with cranked up high tuning, and wide open with no muffling is my favorite sound & feel
Absolutely love this new series Mike! Thanks so much for always delivering a grand slam when it comes to valuable content for the drumming community! Love the kit!!! 🙏🍵
It’s wild seeing this kit. I almost bought this from Nelson but I’ve had such a hard time getting heads to work on my 70’s Gretsch kit, I turned it down. I’m glad I didn’t get it to see it being you so much joy.
Very cool kit, Mike. I have a bit of a Rogers problem myself. Just picked up another kit last week, 60's Londoner in Silver Sparkle. While playing it, it kind of dawned on me that these drums are meant to be played with no bass drum hole. It's night and day with the tone and response. I'm glad you are out here promoting the vintage thing. Modern kits are all sounding pretty similar to me these days!
Mike congrats, thats a great sounding and looking kit. I believe you are correct, in that old shells sound great. interesting that nobody has piped in about a 16 x 14BD. My son's drum teacher has a 16 x 14, 8 x 12 and a 14 x 14 Round Badge in factory black nitron wrap. A smoking great kit. Jasper shells with silver painted interiors....very Elvin Jones.
Great video Mike! My absolute bucket list set has been a mod orange downbeat Ludwig set from the 60's. I was fortunate to acquire a 12 and a 14 from late 1968 some years ago but finding that 20" bass drum was getting tough. A friend hipped me to Bryson's shop as he had a mod orange bass drum. needless to say it was a great match and the perfect addition to complete the dream set. Bryson was great, as was the staff. BTW my first set that I got used in 1983 when i was 12 is a SSB Gretsch. I love the set dearly and next June i will have 40 years with them! Keep up the good work!
This video scratches every itch I've ever had around gear. Message received. It's ok to buy drums! You sound phenomenal on this bop kit by the way. If you're not a jazz drummer then I'm not a drummer!
I have a 60s Gretsch snare with the same cover. I bought it in Memphis about 94. I love it...played just about every gig with it since then. It would be awesome to have the rest of the kit to match.
I've owned several brands, models and sizes since the 60's. I finally landed on my permanent center of my universe many years ago, the Gretsch bop kit. "That Great Gretsch Sound" is real. There are many reasons for this. I started in rock and switched to jazz in the 70's. Gretsch and jazz are synonymous, like bread and butter, salt and pepper, beer and pretzels.
Dude your supreme passion and love for the instrument (not to mention your incredible chops) always kill/thrill me 👏 After practicing / recording most of the day, I’m practicing again now 👍Thank you for the constant inspiration - I can’t wait to meet you someday?! 😎
Hy Mike, nice drum kit and vid! My first new drum kit i ever bought is a Gretsch catalina club mahagoni shells, black matte with a red stripe. I love this kit!!!
Cool man! I just got myself a stop sign the other week! Mine are 12”, 15” ft and 18” bd where the 18” was previously a floor tom and the 15” a rack tom. Sounds amazing!
This is very cool!! What a beautiful looking and sounding drum set, the wrap just fits the aesthetic of the classic jazz feel and makes it look straight out of the era. I’m always interested to see what the drummers who inspire me are playing. After you did your 20 snares in 2 minutes video I’ve been hoping to see dedicated videos talking about each snare as well as each kit. I’d love to hear the story for each! Where/when you got it, what’s special about it, what you like to use it for, everything. Looking forward to seeing where this series goes!!

Thanks for noticing RDM! I’m still doing the editing, color grading, and audio but it’s really nice just to have an extra person to get those hand held shots. They give things just a bit more life.
I got a late 70s stop sign badge that came into Memphis Drum Shop. I finally talked Jim Pettit into selling it to me (he’s has dozens so) But, it’s a 12, 15, 18. Tests right, a rare 15. I don’t think Jim realized it was a 15 floor Tom at the time. It’s my favorite kit hand down

Hi, my father passed away and I have been left with his Gretch Drum Kit which has inspired me to take up the drums. As yet, we have been unable to identify which model they are exactly. If I were to send you a couple of pics, would you possibly be able to help identify them?

Congratulations Mike I'm happy for you little jealous but I'm happy enjoy
They sound delicious. Yer a good tuner, mic-er? and mixer. Much credit to you for the good sound. 🤟😝

ZERO idea whatsoever, lol.
@@mikeslessons same here where drummers not Carpenters
Beautiful set….me I’d stop the clinic for 1
Minute and tell them please hold that set lol then carry on with the clinic lol
Ha, sitting, lol. They sound great!
Hey Mike. I tried to purchase your Groove freedom book on Amazon, but it said it wasn’t available. Is there any other way I can purchase it?
Hey Mike what kind of cymbals, high hat do you use? They sound amazing!
Damn these sound like Rudy Van Gelder was in the studio with you
Beautiful and great video too I love these. Question when you buy gear do you get to use it as a tax write off?? I own a painting company and when I buy tools I keep the receipts and it comes off my taxable income is it the same for you because I’m starting to think I should have added and drums to the company name ha haaaaaaa 🔥🥁
All drum related stuff is a tax write off, evn my hair products since I spend 90% of my job on camera, LOL
@@mikeslessons that is awesome!!!! Ya I was just curious I figured but it sounded to good to be true ha haaaa. I hear ya on the hair product I can get away with some soap and TP ha haaaaaa I don’t think I would even owe taxes with all my damnnnnn ride and hi hat purchases 🔥🥁
I have a 70's Ludwig kit that looks the same.
If I had this kit right now I wouldn't let it go either, even if you kidnapped my mother and demanded it as ransom.
I love you! I mean nothing....did I type that out loud!?
LOL! You are loved right back
So is it an 18 or 20 kick? I hear you say 18, but your description states 20x14.
Very nice-sounding BTW!
100% my bad in the description, thanks for the heads up. It is in fact an 18X14 bass drum :)
Mike, your hands look so smooth in slowmotion ;-)
aw c'mon! let's hear more of that kit!
and sorry but on that kit... you GOTTA play traditional grip. you just have to.
