You did good with that driver at the beginning. Another way to do it if they don't have a CB is, when you see the distance is clear, put on your right turn signal and slowly drift partially to the right shoulder. If the truck starts to go out and around you then back off a bit to let him go but if he stays behind you then just maintain the lane and screw him.

Exactly, whats a few seconds compared to the hrs you still have to drive. Like when tiny cars are squeezing by you on an onramp bout ready to be crushed between you and the retaining wall. Just can't wait🤣

So a few months back I quit my job, went to school and got my cdla. I can honestly say, I don't like long hauls, my current job has shuttles for first phase, and second is unloading. I can say, it's so much better for me to stop and exercise than drive straight for hours. Depends on the person, props to you
Yep just gotta find what suits you best in trucking 👌
I drove for CFI and trained many years ago. Seems like they have improved lots since I was there 99-2002. I came from another company where I trained for 5 years. I do not drive for a living, but I have 35 years of non-CDL driving experience.........in The People's Republic of NJ and NYC (the most difficult places to drive in the U.S.). Zero accidents. No moving violations since 2006. I would guess that, as a relatively new driver, and driving for a national trucking company, your truck is governed? You would THINK that other "professional" drivers would be mindful of that.
Truth of the matter is that I give ZERO "F's" about anybody's "tight schedule". If it's a one lane road and the speed limit is 45, then I'm NOT going any faster than 50. Let those on a "tight schedule", drive over the top of me. I would like for my family to be multi-millionaires. Professional drivers KNOW what trucking is ALL about (TIGHT SCHEDULES), when they sign on the dotted line to go to CDL school. No surprises.
"Liked" and subscribed. Stay safe.

Hey dave love the content and i got a bit of a tip for you. Maybe you didn't think of it or no one told you. My dad has been driving for over 40 years and I have learned alot from him. When you have to slide your tandems back. Do it after you back in the whole. Like when you almost in the whole or atless when you get straight. It makes it easier to make the turn to back in if you want to slide them back.
Sitting in Joplin waiting for Thursday for orientation then off with a trainer on Friday

Okay Ryan. Now that you have screwed up your life it’s time for the truth about trucking. 1st is how much you get paid per mile. Ex .30 per mile. AVERAGE miles you will get per week 2,500. Hours per week you actually are working is 168 hour’s. You’re only able to drive 80 hours. But YOU are responsible for that truck and trailer at all times unless you’re on your company property. So let’s take your pay .30 x 2500 = $750.00. Now divide $750 into 168 hours. That’s $4.47 per hour not to mention the taxes and insurance they take. 2nd you now have no life but a truckers life. Meaning if you plan on time off your dispatcher will claim to get you home in time witch it almost never happens. Your significant other (bed partner) won’t understand why you’re not there for them They will begin to look elsewhere unless they themselves come from a trucking background. 3rd you’re only going to see the worst parts of any town. Rich people don’t live where trucks go regularly. 4th is dispatch will micro management you to the last minute. Leave you out there without time to get anyplace for food, water, and restroom not to mention the chance to get a shower. Yes I am still doing this job even though I know all of this. 35 year’s accident free and ticket free. Not going to talk about my first year here. Why am I still doing this you ask. I don’t have rent or a mortgage. My wife and I drive teams. We have no kids. So in short I’m banking all my money so whenever we decide to retire, we can do it with stile. LOL at this point I’m not sure what’s the retirement age is going to be.
@@robertlukacs1762 nice to know that nobody other than you or someone in your exact circumstance should ever choose this career or else it’s considered “screwing up your life”. Don’t be such a stick in the mud and cheer up.

@@douglasmcveigh5559 three reasons: main one being many don’t even bother putting one in their truck. As a motorcycle driver iv learned to drive like nobody can see, cant imagine doing that with a semi lol
I’m the same way riding my bike, because most drivers don’t see us. 🏍🇺🇸🎒
@@glcmranger421 I drive a motorcycle too. As a long haul driver for 46 years, I can tell you that modern trucks have no blind spots. I have for years offered guys $1,000.00 if they can hide their smallest car in my so called blind spot, on the right of the left. Can't do it. Now, if you have never been trained how to properly adjust your mirrors, then all bets are off. Blind spots are a myth.
@@SternDrive I concur. I taught defensive driving and offensive driving for years for DOD and showed students on the range how to properly check for vehicles in their “blind spots.” As an accident investigator, I cringed when drivers explained that that vehicle “came out of nowhere!” Well, it came out of your lack of attention to your surroundings. 🤔
@@glcmranger421 Modern trucks have three (3) mirrors on the right, and the same number on the left. There is never any need to have any blind spots on the right or left of your rig. I have $1,000.00 for anyone who can hide their smallest car on the right or left of my truck. You can't do it. I'm sorry but most trainers have let their students down when they did not teach new guys HOW to properly adjust their mirrors. The problem is the trainers don't know themselves! "Adjust your mirrors to your preference, and watch for the blind spots" is negligent training. Ask youself, why most guys have blind spots on their modern trucks. I can take a picture from the seat of my truck of that little car in the worst so called "blind spot". If my camera with one eye can see that little car, then why can't I see it with two eyes. Answer: I can see it, because I have my mirrors adjusted correctly. Ask youself, why do most guys have the upper half of their mirrors looking at sky and airplanes? Half of that mirror is squandered. Hint: You are interested in little cars, NOT bird watching! Ask yourself, why do most guys look at their own rig with their mirrors? I teach my students that they are NOT going to run into themselves, so stop looking at your own truck! You're interested in the pesky little Toyotas. Not you own shiny paint. Right? We can lower the number of accidents, but it must start with the trainers.
@@SternDrive very true.
I’m an Army veteran so I love seeing the veteran trucks on the road! 🇺🇸
My dad taught me to always blink my headlights at night if a semi was passing me. That lets the trucker know he is clear to get over so he doesn't have to spend so much time looking in his side mirrors thus taking his eyes off the road in front of him. Most of the time the trucker will blink their taillights to say thanks. I have tried to teach my 3 daughters the same rule, I hope it sticks with them.
Cool my pops showed me the same .
I learned this from my teacher. It stuck and I have been doing it since then.

Their has been a CFI truck and trailer parked in the same spot for a couple weeks here. I have been driving by it while out and about for work. Not sure what is up with that.
In 46 years of long haul driving I never worry too much if guys want to sit on my tail. If I have to stop for a deer or something it will be his problem. I'm glad you helped him pass. It depends what you consider "almost no money" a company driver makes a lot more than a restaurant worker, a grocery store employee, a person unloading trailers with a forklift, or an office clerk. I see many owner operators that make LESS money than company drivers because frequent breakdowns which are THOUSANDS of dollars per year
@@kwt2000trucker The difference between a company driver and all those jobs you listed, is that those workers go home at night to their own beds and families. When they are off work, they are off. An OTR company driver is never really "off," in my opinion, because they have to babysit that truck wherever they are. All those hours sitting around waiting for the ELD to switch over or laying around in the sleeper are UNPAID work hours. If you consider those hours as work hours, then company drivers make orders of magnitude less money than all the other jobs you listed. If you see an O/O making less money than a company driver it's because the O/O isn't doing things properly. You have to save and prepare for breakdowns, which always cost between 10K and 30K per year. That's a given. You have to be leased on with the right people, or know what you're doing if you're operating under your own authority. Being an O/O is more complicated than people realize, but it should always be more lucrative than being a company driver. Otherwise the O/O is prob not cut out to be an O/O.

Have you never heard of drafting? Better mileage with less wind resistance
It might help with all of those things, but for a heavy vehicle like that doing that is not safe is it's going to take a while to break. And if something was to happen in front of Dave and he slams on the breaks the trucker would slam into the back of the trailer.
Drafting is stupid in a commercial vehicle and you can get a ticket just like in a regular vehicle for tailgating. one state I seen recently was setting up cameras to catch truck drivers tailgating each other. it's honestly stupid in any kind of a vehicle no matter what size or weight it is

(Posted by Rick Pickell) That is a professional way of handling a not so professional situation. There are some that true steering wheel holders out there. Good job driver. 👍👏👏👏👍
Has anyone else ever wondered what they are actually doing at the cross docks?
They unload and reload....
@JEFFREY HARMON
😉
Most of the time they have you drop your trailer and a Mexico driver takes it across the boarder. If they actually do unload your trailer, it’s swung into another trailer. Also they do it in reverse or bring your load to your yard.
Dave, back into the dock without touching it, then slide the tandems. I thought even CFI knew that.
