Isn’t it crazy that Dave’s dropping off the trailer and picking up a load of empty pallets and the yarddog is dropping a trailer full of empty pallets right next to where Dave will pull in?... That’s truckin Dave!
Big fan dave. Ive been out of a truck for 2 years and am just getting back into one due to corona. Watching you back and talk it out has helped me get back in the flow of things. Plus, it just fun to hear you talk about your life. Stay safe.
When you panic cause the guards don't give good directions and you're not sure if you've done right and then you end up figuring it out on you're own and then all is well 😅
Practice makes perfect (usually). When I first started driving in 85 over the road, my hands would always get sweaty and my anxiety would be high when I got off the interstate and had to drive through a city. Fast forward 4 years and I drove for a small grocery chain with all of the stores in the worst areas of the inner cities between Norfolk and NY where all of the deliveries required parallel parking in loading zones on busy streets--this was all with Kenworth T-600s with single sleepers and a trailer that I forgot the length (a strange size that I believe was a little shorter than a 45 footer if I remember). Point is: after driving with them for a few months--city driving in a semi no longer concerned me.
What a clusterfu**. Standing around for 30 minutes before you are acknowledged is a waste of time. That customer needs a greeter or someone to manage all the inbound trucks. Cant be the one guy on the forklift in the green hat that already has a job to do. Good job keeping your patience and your demeanor professional- not easy in a situation like that. Also, very cool of you to take the garbage with you and not on the customers lot. 'Ol Dave The Professional Truck Driver. That's truckin' Dave!
Unbelievable. Delivered there 20 years ago back when I worked for Fastway and I remember it because it was the biggest clusterf#@* I’ve ever seen on the inside. Every door had freight piled up to the doors. That lot you parked in at the beginning was jammed with trucks that couldnt get unloaded cause they had no room to unload them. Since it was so long ago I had trouble remembering what town it was in (knew it was Winn Dixie dc in south LA), decided to watch one last video before I hit the sack and instantly recognize the place. Though where I went were the doors to the left after your initial right past the guard shack. Thanks for the jog down memory lane!
Tougher the back ..... the better the views Dave 😆😆💰😆💰💰😆😆😆 i used to back at a place like this everyday and i know the feeling of trying to hurry up and back in before a yard dog slams a trailer next to your dock 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That was pretty good. There's a place up in Rochester NY. Some beverage DC where you don't talk to anyone. You call a number, they send a text telling you where to go, and you have to go inside a building to dock, and for whatever reason, they have concrete blocks sitting against the outer wall for you to hit. Then you drop it, go park, they text you when it's done and the paperwork is in the trailer. It really wasn't that bad, but I watched a lot of people struggle with it. Some of these places we go are just insane
additionally, it's a lot easier to sit here and look at what he 'needs/should' do, than it is to sit in that left seat and do it sometimes.. :) another good video, brother.
With items like a stack of pallets, I'd just find a board that are as tall as the stack and brace that against the pallets with the strap; or take down a pallet or two if no board are to be found.
Hi Dave, I am new to the channel within the last week or so. I am enjoying it so far. A tip on strapping the pallets is to make an X with the two straps. That way it gets the stacks more top to bottom instead of two single planes like you did.
That place really reminds me of Quaker in Tacoma WA, place is tight af lol but at least to me, once you get the trailer in, there is a special feeling of accomplishment. you did awesome though Dave!
I’ve delivered there lmao I know what you taking about.😂 100% that place is tight in front side docks. Also screw that place too they made me wait 6 hrs because I got 30 min late
Here's a couple hints for you and your backing process. First: Get a good look at the space you are going to back into. Are the trucks in the neighboring doors in straight? If not, that could mess you up if you are using them as a guide. Is there enough room to align yourself for a more "straight-in" attempt? Backing straight in, even if it's a longer distance, will result in fewer pull-ups to reposition. Second: If you still need to jack it in, slide your tandems all the way BACK. It's much easier to steer your trailer when the wheels are all the way back as opposed to it pivoting somewhere in the middle. Obviously, that isn't the case when driving and maneuvering around corners, so remember to put them back up at the 41' mark after you load/unload and are getting ready to leave. Third: Use the painted lines on the pavement as your guide. You already checked out the space, that should have included noting where the line goes...right to the edge of the door or a few inches (or more) to the side of the door, to the edge of the rubber bumper, for instance. Fourth: Night time backing into tight spots. Get some sort of battery powered LED light strip and clamp it onto the back of your trailer so you have enough light to see. Stop and remove it before bumping the dock, but after you are in the right line to hit the door squarely. Stay calm and laugh often.
Dave , a trick i do when there an open space beside the dock i am aiming for instead of correcting to early ill just back up as far i can even if I'm far off and then you get enough space to go forward and straighten out
Driver lock just your trailer brakes push the front of the trailer over then unlock it and roll it back into the dock. I am a fan watching ice road truckers I learned that trick it’s helped FedEx driver out few years ago.
I back with the door open you can see right where you need to break your rotation at. Give it a try. Set up open door one foot on pedal one hand on wheel turn and look out of your door
When i do pallets like that. I get two straps and do them diagonally (top left to bottom right) (top right to bottom left). Makes me feel good about the load that way haha
To set up perfectly for your bobtail to line up to your trailer, stop when the nose is about halfway infront of the trailer, then turn your wheels all the way before moving. Then just turn with the wheels cranked, and you will be perfect. This video explains. Skip to 8 mins 15 seconds if you don't want to watch the whole video. ua-cam.com/video/8AmK3anJstI/v-deo.html
Win Dixie saved a couple hundred thousand by not buying that extra little piece of land needed to give the trucks room to maneuver, but single handedly cost millions of dollars to trucking companies that operate for multiple companies and multiple agencies. Good to see they care that the price of your milk is now tripled in price because of their own penny pinching and that it takes them 9 hours to back a truck in and cost millions a year just because they saved 300k that one time when they built the yard
You can tell a new driver from an old one that’s been on for years. If he just parks it by himself and he doesn’t fix it that’s when you know he’s been on the road rules for more than a few years. But #RidingWithDave because he’s new he wants his parking to be perfect and in between the lines when there is nobody there. That's why when I started I was trained to be able to back up on a triangle two lane road 3 sharp turns with little room.
All my loads that I strap down I always make a x pattern. It was what I was taught, I recommend it tho! Especially on those pallet loads
I was thinking the "X" would make way more sense too as I watched him strap the pallets. I hope it worked out for him tho

Slide trailer tandem all the way forward, best way to back in to tight spaces.
