The Little Mermaid - Ursula's Death Evolution (1987 - 2023)

- another evolution video, this time of the scene where ursula dies! as you can tell, this scene evolved quite a bit to get to where it is now :)
Ursula: Pat Carroll (1987 - 1989), Cicily Daniels (2008), and Melissa McCarthy (2023) - Фільми й анімація
Its so cool to see how much this ending was altered before the final release. I like how the adaptations of the original film tweak it as well.
A difference in the 2023 release, the roles are reversed as Ariel somehow sacrificed spiritual needs to kill Ursula.
First storyboard is best version because everyone saved the day. Ariel was the one who knocked the trident out of Ursula's hands, Sebastian brought it to Eric, Eric tossed it.
The first storyboard was used in kingdom hearts 2.
Like an olympics javelin.
Before Dynasty Warriors gave us Wen Yang, Disney gave us Eric.
4:09 Ursula: [evilly] So much for true love!
5:02 [cackling] 5:04 So much for true love!
That mostly meant Ariel was almost certainly doomed to be without the human legs or Eric despite having come all this way.
i like that the early versions make it clear the trident backfiring is what finishes her off and disintegrates her, the 1989 versions do it more subtly
0:46 That’s how she was killed in Kingdom Hearts 2 lol. If they had used that ending, it would’ve been great if Eric yelled “Here’s your triton, your Majesty!” before flinging it at her 😁
Wow the 2nd workprint is gruesome. I mean the way Ursula's death is animated.
5:04 *"SO MUCH FOR TRUE LOVE!"*
She my true love
While I loved the live action remake with all the new additions, songs, and visuals, the ending was so anticlimatic. The iconic phrase "so much for true love" wasn't there and Ursula just didnt feel scary. Cool that Ariel got to kill her, but idk, it could be better I guess.
Oh that line is there. It just happens a bit earlier.
This line is there. Seems like you didn't watch the movie.
I trembled with fear because of the giant Melissa. If you didn't watch the whole movie in cinema you can't have that experience.
@@AKittenLover i thought she was scarier too. I don't know who decided to give her glowing eyes and shark gills but they deserve a massive slap in the face and a pat on the back immediately after.
@AKittenLover or u just have low standards and are easily moved lmao call a spade a spade yall gassing the movie up now 😂
The reason why the first two endings were changed was because Jeffrey Katzenberg had went to see Die Hard and after watching the film he returned to the studio and saw the original endings and told the producers that the ending wasn’t big enough and plus Die Hard was a huge hit at the time and after watching the film he quoted more Die Hard
tbh i wish he hadn't seen it because i like the original endings so much better
@@justyourvoice Really I actually prefer the original endings too
@@justyourvoiceThey don't seem epic enough though.
@@francescop.c.3298That's what storyboards are for. If this was animated it would look very epic.
Ursula's original defeat was revisited for "Kingdom Hearts"
I like both versions. But i wish they changed Ursula's death in the live action because with Ariel Killing her i would like to see a new death.
Edit: The fact so many people got upset that Ariel killed Ursula even though in the Broadway version she defeated Ursula and yet NO ONE SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THAT. Just shows how hypocritical they are 😂
Perhaps because the Broadway version is not nearly as well known? TLM is my favorite Disney movie and I didn't know there was a Broadway version until a few years ago. Who knows? Not everyone comments on everything the same way or with the same level of vigor. Js.
@@SS4XaniTrue👏, but no one ever mentioned that they didn't like Ariel defeating ursula ever since the Broadway released like it was never brought up before???
@@kevinsafar The only reason I say it works is because she's the titular character. That's it. Other than that, it makes Eric look completely useless but then the concept of a strong male protagonist doesn't seem to be Disney's thing with the potential exception of Aladdin offhand and even then he needed a Genie.
@@SS4Xanie didnt need a genie to trick jafar into becoming a genie himself
He just said what needed to be said
The genie only helped
I think that's because not a lot of people watch the stage version. It's criminally underrated.
How exactly did the animated original, made in 1989, manage to make the act of being stabbed by the bowsprit of a wrecked ship look more painful than the remake in 2023 with real, visible actors and infinitely better CGI available?
Ursula in the animated version was stabbed by a spear point and electrocuted by lightning
Ursula in the 2023 was stabbed by a knife in the heart and theres a reason for her slowness
@@DavidDickeeeIt wasn't a knife, it still was the ship's bowsprit
@@francescop.c.3298 i meant to say
Like a knife
I don’t think they wanted it to look too graphic, it’s still a kids movie. If a more graphic scene of her dying is what you were hoping for.
Ursula screaming Low pitch sound more scary in Work print version then final movie version. 4:17
HAHAHAHAHAHA! I'm probably the only one who noticed/saw this, but at 7:16, Melissa's wig falls off! 🤣
Thats not her wig
That isnt a wig
Thats tritons crown that falls of her head
Look closely
I did. I looked again more closely. Yep. Her wig falls off. Heck, the whole thing falls off.
@@theotherhiccup3229 no she isnt wearing a wig
She only wore her wig for pictures
During filming her hair is always flowing
This is a cgi cap
That’s the crown
That was the crown
It is rather confounding how Ursula is shown with an endoskeleton at 05:16 despite her being based on a marine invertebrate, particularly the group of molluscs called cephalopods, which have a gladius.
Yay! This is what I was looking for! Thank you ❤️
At 07:07, Ursula can be heard uttering a monstrous demonic roar, even while dying.
For 2:55-3:39 I can see why this one got cut. It’s the music, the music wasn’t right for the scene.
The live action version was cool but it's hard to see her face
Thats because it was deemed to scary for kids
Ariel Defeated Ursula, And Ariel Is Our Victory! So Long Ursula!
Really?! Did she do a fatality on Ursula?
@@toddlindsay8846 In the 2023 live-action film, da.
@@KarlSturmgewher beauty!
thanks god they didnt use the workprint 2 version on the final cut, it reminded me to Rasputin's death from Anastasia on the way of how creepy it is, and Rasputin's death scared me the fuck out in my childhood lol so this could've been even worse
5:07
That look when an enemy tries to take you down with them....
The original version is awesome.
It's more violent and Ariel actually tries to fight back.
I do however love the one we ended up getting with the ship impaling kaiju Ursula.
The live action remake is so-so, I am not a fan of Ariel killing Ursula and it makes no sense for her to be able to steer a vessel. It takes years of experience which she couldn't learn in the short time frame of being a human.
It also takes feet, normally....
5:07
I loved the way her eyes widen.
When at the mercy of an enemy Stand.
1989 - Eric kills Ursula
2023 - Ariel kills Ursula (same as Broadway Ariel breaks the shell 🐚 to kill Ursula)
I hope Eric pays severely for this despicable crime he committed.
The unused one was used on kingdom hearts 2.
In this clip, there is a musical transition at 00:42 shifting to more uplifting music, signifying the end of Ursula's evil.
Ursula’s not evil, Ariel is.
Yeah! The best video of the movie
The iconic phrase was there but not before Ursula got impaled by the ship
You Forgot Sherie Rene Scott Ariel (Sierra Bogess) breaks the shell to Kill Ursula
They used the version with cicialy daniels
Its still the same death
@@DavidDickeeeKingdom Hearts Series
1st Game: Sora, Ariel and Donald Duck kills Ursula using Keyblade
Sequel: Eric kills Ursula using Trident (same as deleted scene of the 1989 film)
Okay there is so many things that they were going to do 😐
In all fairness a budget of 40 million can only do so much
For everyone mad that Ariel defeated Ursula in the live action: that was the original plan in the animated movie. However it was dropped early on as they thought it would take away Ariel’s sweet nature
They said about the girl who threw hands at Ursula twice. Thrice in the 2023 version.
Not true
No it wasn't. The ending was changed for not "being like die hard".
In the original versions, Ariel did contribute to the fight more, but when Ursula grew giant someone had to distract her. Neither version fixes this issue because there's no way to fight giant Ursula without someone being helpless.
This was also done so trition knew all humans weren't bad
I love how the movie was supposed to be 2 hours long but it just turned out to be an hour
more like De-evolution
Well done! Though I still prefer the 1989 and 2023 versions!
I think the 2023 version was cool, only complaints is one, the true love should’ve been the last line. Two I wish the lighting happened, it felt kinda anticlimactic without the lighting and sparks everywhere. It felt like a giant explosion.
One question? Were did you get the workprints from?
they were uploaded to archive.org by someone back in may.
The many ways to make calamari out of this evil cephalopod called Ursula.
I prefer the original alternative endings the one in the final film didn’t seem that epic to me but I actually love the one in the remake.
Boat ⛵ scream grunt Eric turn the wheel
With Ursula being impaled in the 1989 version and the 2023 version, does anyone think of squid shish kebab?
Next remake will be Bambi by Sara Polley then Snow White and Questlove's Aristocats we got another Toy Story is called Woody and we got Marvel's Thunderbolts.
Yes 👍🙌
kingdom hearts 2 did the original ending! thats super cool to find out imo

I really think giving Melissa Mcarthy the role of ursula was a huge mistake. She wasnt built to play a mean character. Queen Latifah or the draq queen Ginger Minj would have been amazing.
Ok, so hopefully this isn't a stupid question but in all concepts before the 1989 and 2023 film and excluding the broadway version, was Ursula always a giant or was there some kind of magic that kept her in her regular form before she died?
in the earlier storyboards it seems she may have gotten a little bigger, but mostly stayed the same size. i dont think they decided to make her huge until the 3rd workprint in the video
I’m still kinda confused on what happened in the Broadway version. What shell was that, was it the one around her necklace or something?
In the Broadway version, the shell is given much more significance. Instead of just being an object used to hold Ariel's voice, it is the source of Usula's magic, and her life force is also tied to it. So, when Ariel destroys the shell, it kills Ursula.
In some versions of the play, Ursula reveals that she did rule over all the oceans for a time. She killed her other siblings, except for Triton, and inherited both the trident and shell from her father Poseidon. However, when Triton comes of age, he takes the trident and rule of the oceans away from her, banishing her from the kingdom, and leaving her only with the shell.
I never liked that Ariel was helpless in the original, but I don't like that Eric is helpless in the new movie.
I never liked that Ursula turned giant because there's no way for two ordinary people to fight that without someone acting as a distraction.
The cool thing about the storyboard fights is that everyone is throwing hands with Ursula equally. No one person contributes to beating her.
eric isn't helpless lol he did help and attack ursula with a harpoon
@@stonegreen972 he's helpless when she is giant. Just like Ariel was.
@@Gernam12 yeah but through quick thinking Ariel was able to jump on a ship and use it’s size to her advantage to defeat urusla :) Ariel is a quick thinker and they show it when the shark was attacking her and flounder
Ariel isn't ordinary.
@@andythemisfit She has no superpower.
Well, there's one thing to note about Ursula's demise. Evil always loses.
Ariel and Eric are the evil ones, Ursula is good.

Love how the remake shows Ariel saving the day! Women don't need to always be rescued by men.
2023 is the better version
Sorry 1989 but 2023 made it hella lot scarier and more intense
And to all you peanut headed nitwits who said eric should have saved the day so triton could see
I want you to know this
Triton was a polyp in the bottom of the ocean
And now triton dies
And in broadway he got banished
Any way you spin it
Triton would not have seen eric save the day
I was shocked when I saw giant Ursula in the cinema
Thank you. That also never sat well with me. Eric killing Ursula is the only way Triton could tell that he was good and truly loved Ariel? Him throwing himself in danger to save her wasn't proof enough? He HAS to deliver the final blow and it doesn't count otherwise?
@@mellemadswoestenburg1296 ❤️.
triton would not have been able to see it any way so what good does it do
And eric isnt the hero of the story
And eric was the villain of the hans christan anderson story technaclly
@FilmReactor He wasn't the villain from the HCA story. Just because he didn't love the mermaid doesn't mean he was the Villain. The story gave us the message we aren't gonna get the things we want no matter how many Sacrifices we make.
@@kevinsafar true true very true but in the mermaid perspection he is the villain
He choose to love by voice and not by personality
My only problem with the remake is the climax and ending. It was so overly feminist that it is ridiculous. I mean seriously? A mermaid steering a ship without a single lesson? Seriously.
Here’s how I would have written the climax and ending. Ariel never actually finds out that Vanessa is really Ursula and she goes to the celebration to say goodbye to Eric. As Eric sees her leave, he realizes that even though she’s not the “one” she’s his true love.
So he politely rejects Vanessa and confesses that he loves Ariel. Vanessa would try to stop him from trying to kiss her but Scuttle and Max would fight her.
The sun still sets before they kiss and Ariel becomes a mermaid again and is taken prisoner by Ursula. The same swap is made with Triton, Eric comes to save Ariel, Flotsam and Jetsam get killed, and like in the original, Ursula tries to blast Ariel with the trident and Eric steers the ship into her.
However instead of killing her, the ship only hurts and shocks Ursula into dropping the trident which Ariel uses to deliever the final blow. All that remains of the sea witch is her necklace which breaks and frees Ariel’s voice. She and her father reconcile and later he turns her human permanently (while giving her that sparkly dress) and she rises from the water singing a reprise of “Part of your World.” Thus making Eric see that she was the “one” after all.
i loved how in the live action, ariel was the hero of her own story. on the 1989 film, she doesn't do anything to have her voice back, and erick killed ursula at the end. on the live action, SHE took the necklace from vanessa herself, and she killed ursula. best live action remake
