  • You don’t have to look too hard to find comments about Star Citizen being incomplete, with no shortage of news covering things that aren’t yet in the game. But, many of these criticisms sidestep the fact that even in this incomplete state, as at patch 3.19, there is a LOT to do in the game already. This video includes some cinematic and gameplay footage from Star Citizen.

After 9 years myself, I can say there are things to do, up to a point. And you will be able to do them at least, ooo, say, 60% of the time without a game ending bug.
But that there is also no point in doing any of them as bugs aside any progress will all be wiped out every few months due to still being a bloody alpha. Brutal but honest.

Yeah, the wipes can be harsh. To be honest though, we haven't had a wipe in a while. Frankly, we sometimes need a wipe anyways because you collect so much junk over time that it can get frustrating.
Actual items, that stuff I really don't care if they wipe, I can always buy again. The reputation and the ships though are really brutal to lose because that is A LOT of work to get those.

@@rixxy9204yeah the inventory can become a mess really quickly. There should be some kind of home, where you can store the things that you really want to keep, like favourite armor or weapons, maybe even on a rack or on a "mannequin" (like they are displayed in the stores), but the impotat part would be to keep them separate from all the rest.

To be honest, Star Citizen is exactly that - You're a citizen in the stars!
It's not like any other game which is why it's so much fun. The level of detail and overall complexity is quite high which is what I really enjoy; most games get boring very fast because you either finish the story or you've mastered all the skills so there's no point to do anything. In SC there really isn't any story and there are no official skills: the skill is exactly your own skill on how to whatever the action is.
For example, when you start the game you won't even know how to take off or land. You will hit the hangar. You will crash into the planet. You will blow yourself up when mining. You will crash into an asteroid when in combat. You will jump into space without a helmet 😂
But as you play, you'll find a sense of achievement unlike any other game, and there's always some other thing that you haven't touched, ship you haven't seen, place that you haven't really been to, or players you haven't met.
My only argument is that it does not have (at this time) is crafting, which is not a huge issue but would be something nice to do. I think that crafting tools, guns and armor would be very cool.
    Anyways, welcome to Star Citizen!!

@@emrebayram1778 If you're using "RPG" like most computer games do (which is with numbers that increase with level to represent your character's skill) then no it is not, I agree. However, if you use "RPG" literally (Role-Playing Game) then yes it most assuredly is. If your objective as a player is to give yourself a slight case of DID and do things /as someone else/, then you can do that just fine without any character progression at all.
As far as 'space sim' goes.... Yeah. But a heavily gameified one. CiG has made some effort to make things close to reality, but they freely admit that if something comes down to realistic or cool/fun, then cool/fun wins.

    • @CyberiusT
      @CyberiusT Рік тому +1

@@emrebayram1778 Never played a pen&paper RPG have you? You don't need dialogue choices written out for you - you can write/say your own in SC. You don't need artificial mechanics when there's a physics engine. Defined roles (tank etc) are actually antithetical to role-playing, which is why people end up doing wierd multiclass things like bard/druid/monk and then have to play three times as long to get anywhere.
And a predetermined story, whilst useful, is pretty much in the same camp. If you have a decent adventuring group (or SC group), you use the setting to make your own adventures.

Remember, you can only do these things after about 40 mins of preparation and getting to your ship, waiting for elevators, waiting for trains and hoping that ATC lets you out the hangar, oh also don't forget in order to spawn your fancy new space tank, you have to spend an extra 30 minutes going to a place where you can easily spawn your tank and load it onto your ship. By the time you do all these tasks you forget what you were playing the game for.

If you set your home base to a station you can be on your way in 5 minutes or less everytime.
In a station you need to ride 1 elevator and then walk to an asop that is less than a minute away and call your ship.
Avoid the cities and your experience will be a lot better bc stations don’t have trains and you ride 1 elevator after spawning.
For ground vehicles I keep my favorite ground vehicle stored in my ship capable of transporting it, as long as I don’t lose that ship, any ground vehicle inside is still there even after storing the ship at a station so its still only 5 mins or less after login to play time.
The only delay is putting armor and weapons on if you died, set your respawn to a station and your experience will greatly increase.
Avoid the planets unless you are buying a new ship, planets have more bugs and delays than stations.

Honestly there's enough gameplay for a shippable game already. What it needs now more than anything is more places to do those things, IE, a few more star systems, and of course a whole lot of polish. Supposedly we should see the second star system some time early next year perhaps? Hopefully after that a few more might arrive sooner rather than later. What I'm most eager for is a second developed commerce system to provide market variety and more places to haul to :-)

I'm not concerned so much with star systems but rather things to do on the planets. That would create a ton of new loops and emergent possibilities for gatherers/traders.

    1. Server meshing, the bigger 1000 ppls servers. 100 is way to small, even with only 1 system.

Thanks for the overview of some of the major gameplay in Star Citizen. One element that you didn't emphasize much, perhaps intentionally, is the group play aspect which somewhat merges with the extremely active global social network of players. Truthfully, there is more to do in the game, and of such complex detail, that one person is unlikely to master all of it, and likely will find some favorite activities and just dabble in others. With the open development cycle being used by Cloud Imperium Games, the activities in game are constantly evolving. One of the best examples of this is the ship and ground vehicle racing gameplay, which has been a grass roots player created and organized hotbed of activity for several years. Recently, the developers, um, "adopted" all that work and made it an integral part of the game. One doesn't see that sort of thing in most, or any, other games.
There is such tremendous variety in what people enjoy, it's difficult to say one thing without slighting another. Of course, FPS gameplay is hugely popular, and there's a massive amount of content in the game specifically focused on that. Likewise, for the pilots and adventurers, the structure of a three dimensional space simulation, which is what the game creates, is immensely immersive for everything from ship combat to mining, to cargo, or salvage, or medical rescue, or indeed, piracy.
There are players who've been with Star Citizen 11 years, since the beginning. I'm not one of those. I was a skeptic six months ago. I'm not a skeptic any longer. It's not the only game I play, but it's by far the one I admire the most, and have the greatest respect for. Star Citizen is a highly technical game; it's not an arcade game, and you don't use a game controller to play it. You need a rather high end computer to run the game properly, excellent internet connectivity, and a willingness to spend a lot of time learning the details of how things work. I think that a lot of the critics are simply people who misunderstood what the game is, and weren't looking for something so technical and requiring such a high skill level.
Someone said, regarding what to do in Star Citizen, very simply, "join an org, and make friends". The making friends part is pretty obvious, and truly it has become a MMO. It's only a single player game if you want it to be that. Regarding orgs, they play a major role, but should be approached cautiously. Some are guilty of deceptive advertising and are not at all what they claim to be. Some seem nice at first, but over time the toxic environment in the org becomes more clear. So, just to add to your excellent video, I would say that there are millions of players out there, but only a fraction are people you want to have any association with. Take care, regarding that aspect of the game. And as always, thank you for your excellent work, Farrister!

    • @Farrister
      @Farrister  Рік тому

Thanks, although I think more is needed on the group play front. Probably because that's the single thing that excites me most about Star Citizen, but there isn't a huge amount of multi-crew options at the moment. Once I see more multi-crew gameplay, it's probably all I'll ever play xD

@@Farrister Sure, certainly, I agree that true multiplayer activities that the game actually supports with functional technology, will be fantastic for some players. unprofitable for anyone but large ship owners, deliveries are sending you into ship AND fps combat on derelict sites for ridiculously low payout where pickup and dropoff aren't even marked. you didn't mention "maintenance" or this stupid mission where you drop off a little handheld satellite either, and it's in the same vein, just about as worthless and negligable.
if you had limited it to "you can fly boxes around", fine, but as described it's not how this works in practice.

for the pirates it works a treat. for anyone else it just doesn't. one pirate mental child uploaded a video suggesting players how to deal with pirates: "just go hide inside the armistice zone".
even pirates know how full of shit they are, they just want to pretend not to see it.i refuse to believe anyone is genuinely that dumb. disingenuous and willing to lie to get their way: absolutely.
    prison: ❌
how is tis something "you can do", or a seperate thing?
it's mining, pvp and at best a jumping puzzle.
again, you could have pointed at kareah or the mission inside there... but is that really anything but just what boils down to pve/pvp more badly working pew pew? it's just that, so a repeated, void point.
    racing: ✅
in ships it works about just fine and the mustang is cheaply available to get started and does well enough.
    refueling/transporting: ❌✅
nobody needs refueling other than on station. that's just not a thing that happens. transporting can happen, but usually it's because someone got kicked out their ship in quantum or the consoles don't work. is that really what enriches gameplay then if it's depends largely on the game failing for someone else? green tick, but more out of pity and because it does at least work and has a reason. a crappy one, but whatever.
    exploration: ✅
there's cheaper large maps in other games with far more detail, but it can be pretty here and there.

Just quickly on the FPS PvE... It's not so much 'working badly' /code/, as massively underpowered hardware. If you get on a fresh uninhabited server (a rare event), the AI will hand you your butt. As server load and time increase, though, things bog down really badly. (Yes, time counts too. it always narks me when I hear people say there is nothing to do in SC and there's no missions to do, especially since within literally 30 minutes of gaming i had so many options of what to do, and many different ways to enjoy the game...
whether that is any number of missions of the varying types to just straight up exploring the planets and/or driving around with friends or alone....
and there are plenty of points of interest that you can find while on your journey's too...
the dynamic and natural way events can happen is imo what makes SC stand out above so many other games...
and due to SC's variety of what to do... it has literally replaced the options on my steam library.... only exceptions so far being base building and RTS games.... but i usually find the ones who claim nothing to do are the ones who either loaded in once or twice, or they haven't bothered playing since the early versions
and understandably the AI has had a reputation for being more asleep than a zoned out buffoon in serious need of munchies... when the server is running great, there is a certainty that you wont make it out the bunker or wreck in one piece...
but that being said.... there's so much to do, it just boils down to what YOU the player would be interested in doing!

@@Farrister and honestly, Farrister... i could not have done it in a more factual and interesting way than what you did... it truly rams home the scope of what SC is, and shows not just the current form of the game, but the potential of it becoming far more too...
i mean the old argument of "it's an alpha" still applies and will do until it moves into Beta, and by then that reasoning will be replaced by "it's a Beta", but either way... for them to develop it people need to realise that they need to build it up....
I will say though SC is by far the best looking game ever created, even if it's not finished yet... i have to admit, i've had far more fun on it... that i have had on any fully released AAA title in the last 20-30 years, cos even when you cant decide what to do in game... you always have that easter egg hunt for poi's and find those unique places that we hear people have found but are so elusive... and discover new things even on the planets and moons we have been accustomed to for a while now
thanks for taking the time and making this video and sharing it too... hopefully it will open people's eyes or at least make people think and try out the other missions or attempt to make their own fun too

Only way to enjoy this game is with a careless mind, willing to be ok with losing any active progress in the name of the fun you had while doing something in that moment.
And that's my biggest issue, I don't like the idea of spending time and effort working towards a goal just to, by some random external factor outside of my control, let it all go and start over, and pretend I'm happy with just flying a ship from point A to point B, and only those things I bought with real life money remain.
It is a big contradiction between what the game wants you to bilieve you can do long term, and the mentality required to do those things, versus you accepting that those selling points don't match the reality of a developer's mandatory wipe, and move on. It's just weird...

Yes, there is a hidden cave under New Babbage, yes, there is a Javelin on Daymar. So what? You flew there, you saw them, what do you do next? @@EdwardDragon96 Given the disparity in size and scope of the games, I would argue that that isn't a strong counter point. This is supposed to be a universe simulator, not an arena shooter and we have had a decade + of development. So far, realistically, we have: Shoot things in ships, shoot things on foot, point a beam at something to ''harvest'' from it (mining/salvage) and a few mission givers that give variations of the aforementioned archetypes. None of those are very refined and all of them are buggy as hell and barely enjoyable most of the time. At this stage, given the scope of what we were promised in 2014 (when I backed) it is increasingly difficult to put up with people that won't accept the perfectly deserved criticism that is being levelled at CIG and the glacial pace of their development.

Given that the game is nowhere near finished, I'd say that my counterpoint is about equal to the point you were making. You tryed to hold it to the standart of a finished game (wich it isnt yet) and I compared it to a finished game about shooting people.
There is a lot of valid critizism in regards to CIG, most recently their lack of communication, especially regarding the priceincrease of the Titan, Harbinger and Cutty Black or the for lack of better word "boneheadedness" regarding the decisions made with Seraphim Station (aka. players like PO because its easy to get in and out so lets do away with that completly).
