Growing up, I often heard the saying: "if something is worth doing, it's worth doing well." And this certainly has some truth to it. Some activities shouldn't even be approached without a commitment to excellence at the outset. However, as I've gotten older, I've come to see this adage from a different perspective. I discuss what that is -- and its repercussions -- in this episode.

Any goal you value enough to chase even through the bad times is reason enough to enjoy the good you still get from it as long as it's still a step forward. I like this

A while ago I decided that I wanted a book case for my house and I also decided to make it myself out of wood. I spent about 18 months just thinking about the design and the joinery, never feeling satisfied with what I had in my head. And all the while going without a book case. Then one day I idly watched a video with a collection of stoic quotes, when this one came up. If something is worth doing, it is worth doing poorly. I remember thinking that was the wrong way of thinking. But it stuck in my head and I eventually came to the right conclusion. Its not that you AIM to do it poorly, rather, the important thing is to actually do the thing. Because if you don’t, you never get the benefit of it. I now have a book case, made by me. The design was never perfect in my head, but the result turned out perfect in real life.

I remember doing that at the driving range for Golf. I would swing just like I saw on TV, but terribly. But what I realized was that each time I would go, there would always be an older gentlemen there ( different guy every time) who would immediately see that I didn't know what the @#$% I was doing but would start coaching on how to address the ball, my stance, my timing, my breathing, my swing, everything. At the end, he'd take no money for his time but he'd recommend that I get lessons before my body got the muscle memory in terms of playing wrong and he'd be on his way. The vid showed me that I should apply it to more areas of my life. Thanks

That’s funny, I’ve only ever heard it as, “if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing poorly.” This is fascinating, I never considered it being a different way! 😂

Such an important point and strong video, particularly for the artistic/creative world. Whether you want to be a writer, painter or actor, you have to be willing to be bad at it, at least to start. If you love it enough, the talent eventually shines through.

Holy sh$t, that one hit the nerve 😳! I can't overstate how important it is to hear that from a professional. As a person trying to get the rid of the "inner voice" dictating me to be perfect in everything I am doing, it is the advice I needed to hear more then 15 years ago... At least now, I can change the present and the future... Thanks a lot!

Spot on….this dovetails with the Japanese idea of Kaizen - change through small/steady steps….funny how the West ( & certainly America) has emphasized short-term/instant gain over incremental progress….& then we don’t connect the dots to see how & why we’re so fragmented & adrift.

Man, what an empowering video. Thank you for posting this. I have made some significant lifestyle changes in this last year, and this principle has kept me in the gym making progress. It feels good to hear someone else put into words what has kept me going these last few months. "I'm not perfect, but I'm doing it anyway."

Well, it depends on the goal. Apparently people go about their own lives, walk into relationships, have kids and raise them in a way that doesn't make any sense and is counterproductive and supposedly is worth doing but it doesn't seem to be working. Love this UA-cam advice...

Thank you. The lesson here is to instead the saying 'Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly'. Don't know how to play the violin well? Do it anyway, because it's the only way to learn. Don't know how to cook food well? Do it anyway or you will have to either eat out for the rest of your life or starve.

Great point. Really important to remember when you’re first starting out at something-whether it’s golf or windsurfing or stand up comedy. You have to be willing to be bad at something (at first) to eventually do it well.

I’ve known this to be true for a long time. There is another way to interpret it that is purely logical: Once you determine that something belongs in the category of “things worth doing at all”, it must be done badly, at a minimum. That is, without further information, you can’t by default upgrade the importance of the task to “needing to be done well” - which is a mere subset of all things worth doing at all.

Totally agree with this video but just one thing I’ve experienced, if you’re not fully aware of how a body should move functionally, a great experienced trainer once a week or so is very valuable. You can injure yourself with bad gait, bad technique etc. you may not want to believe something simple may be lost on you but boy it happens.

This is true. I speak about this in my episode "You can only get better." Unfortunately, that also means that you can get better at the wrong thing. So it's very important to be mindful of what you do repeatedly.

It's about momentum, without flexibility, i.e. a range of movement, physically, socially, intellectually, etc - you risk finding yourself in some degree of atrophy. Human beings are generalists, we are not trained racehorses with only one highly directed purpose, we do best by taking on a wide variety of positive habits, even if we are not excellent at those.

I think it has to be looked at case by case basis. Example: people with a J in MBTI and enneagram 1 needs to stop thinking and start doing. And vice versa, people with P and idk enneagram 7 can benefit from a little more thinking before doing.

Ive binge a few of your videos so far and can say with confidence that what you produce in an average 5min goes more thought provoking, more focused, and informative than any 2-3 hour male centric/targeted podcast.
I will admit that i have given my time to these "color pill" community podcast targeted to men. in their infancy, they seemed to be a solution to a problem where men had no voice but I recently realized these same male community have all too become the villains of their once good intentions. They are now creating the very problems that led good men to be silent.
So I thank you to your non judgemental approach on every subject so far. You earned my sub

I recently came across a statement and wonder if there is any truth or data on it:
_the opposite of a matriarchy is a patriarch, the opposite of a patriarchy is egalitarian_
For me, your videos very much sit within an egalitarian viewpoint which I enjoy so far. As for the statement above, it poses some theory I've been sitting on:
_Men are naturally egalitarianist from the individual to the society decisions making since the beginning of time but perceived by women as patriarchal. Whereas Women, maybe Indirectly biologically, are matriarchal in the same span of decisions_

    • @du-marcm.1859
      @du-marcm.1859 Рік тому

To elaborate, all of the societal decisions that men have made that appear to be patriarchal in the eyes of women are somewhat egalitarian in thought for men. I'm even considering some of the most heinous to most gracious decisions men have made in human history.
I'd love to get your thoughts and data if known.

This may work for your personal life, but doing something poorly in the public sphere can cause harm to others or be that limiting psychological factor due to a very negative result. Make errors early and in training, keep working at your own development, but doing things well will eventually have to be the standard.
