    I took on the challenge of restoring a stunning vintage stained glass display cabinet I found on Facebook Marketplace. Handmade by a local carpenter, this cabinet immediately caught my eye with its stunning stained glass doors.
    Despite a minor flaw-a broken piece of glass that's hardly noticeable-I couldn't resist bringing this piece home. However, I felt that the abundance of wooden decorations detracted from the beauty of the stained glass doors. So, I made the decision to remove some of them, which might upset a few people. Do you think I made the right call? Let me know in the comments what you would have done!
    Once the excess decorations were gone, I started sanding down every inch of the cabinet to reveal its original wood. Trust me, it was quite the labor of love! But the final result was more than worth the effort.
    To preserve and enhance the wood's natural beauty, I applied a clear protective varnish-a crucial step in ensuring this piece will stand the test of time.
    So relax, grab a coffee and join me in this restoration, and don't forget to share your thoughts in the comments below. And if you're as passionate about refurbishment and DIY projects as I am, don't hesitate to hit that subscribe button for more inspiring content!

    It was perfect before. The patina of the wood. Everything. You 'plained it up'. I don't think you did that piece any favors at all.

      I would say both versions are beautiful in their own ways! Normally I sell my furniture pieces, but this one I'm keeping for myself, so I did it in a style that I love and that fits in my interior.

      I disagree actually, I doesn't look like it was patina but just a dark stain on the wood. I always love natural wood more then adding some coloring to make it look like another color then it was supposed to be.

      Do you even know what wood patina looks like? Cause that looks like a typical 70-80s stain to me. She most certainly didn’t plained it up, it’s a gorgeous piece but tbh the original stain had to go 💅🏻

    this is refurbishing NOT restoration - and in addition, you destroyed someone else’s artistry.
    it’s one thing to refurbish an ikea piece or a vintage piece that’s already falling apart….but you took someone’s fully complete piece of art and literally destroyed it. If you didn’t like it…. you shouldn’t have bought it.

      Thank you for taking the time to watch and share your thoughts. I get where you're coming from, and I appreciate your perspective. I want to clarify that my intention was never to devalue someone else's artistry. I approached this project with the aim of giving new life to a piece that resonated with me. I actually really value this piece for it's handcrafted artwork that is why I bought it. The previous owners had it standing outside almost ready to be thrown away! So I like the fact that I got it and made it so that it will keep being loved in my home for many more years to come! Just curious, what would you suggest I do differently next time? Always open to new ideas! :)

      I want to assure you that I never pass off someone else's work as my own. Each piece I work on is a collaboration between the original craftsmanship and my own efforts to refurbish and enhance its beauty. I always disclose to buyers the origin and that I refurbished it myself. There is tons of furniture that ends up in landfills, so I try to ensure that pieces considered outdated and ready for disposal are given a second life by modernizing them. I hope you can see that I do this out of respect for the furniture and the creators before it

    Great work!
    I do have a 2¢, but it’s only a suggestion and by no means necessary
    I don't think removing the long centerpiece was bad. It removed the woodwork, but you wouldn't know it's missing. If you hadn't seen it before, you would assume it was a decent reproduction piece. However, removing the top centerpiece and the side framing pieces made it look unfinished, off-balance, and disconnected. You have this odd floating scroll detail that no longer relates to the piece. It is disjointed and feels like a bad copy-paste or a monster of Frankenstein. Your eye is no longer drawn to the beauty of stained glass. Instead, your eyes wander and wonder where's Waldo, aka that quiet but intense feeling of oddness when you can't put your finger on “it” for someone who hasn't seen this video or the original work. They would appreciate it's potential beauty, but it misses the mark of beauty.
    I understand you wanted to make changes, and I believe why not. We live once, no harm, no foul-
    my ideas
    - the stain didn't blend well it’s most noticeable on the scroll work
    perhaps another color or coat.
    If you would prefer a more contemporary, simple, minimalist look
    -maybe you can do a test and cover up the scroll work and see if that helps with cohesion.
    - or add scroll work or possibly a different design. Maybe you can do squares across
    Thank you for sharing your work

      Hi Celia, thanks for taking the time to give your 2¢! I see what you mean with there seeming to miss some pieces now, maybe it would have been good to add some extension of this in the top middle and sides. I think I could find some wood ornaments that would fit this, maybe even a wood flower ornaments, something bigger in the middle and smaller ones on the sides. What do you think?

    Seriously?! This was handmade by a local carpenter - someone from your community that took care and pride in their craft. This little cabinet would have been a local antique one day (if it not already was one). The original elements are now destroyed. You significantly lowered its value (not just monetary) -- and it no longer is original.

    • @2ndlife.furniture.restoration
      @2ndlife.furniture.restoration  Місяць тому +1

      It depends on how you determine it’s value. I bought it from people who we’re leaving it outside in the rain and didn’t want it anymore, so they got rid of it for a low price, they did not see it’s value. But I loved this little cabinet so much, specially respecting it’s handmade local craft aspect. I will keep this piece for my home and look at it everyday with joy ☺️ I think thàt is very valuable and I think the original carpenter would be happy that it can be loved in somebody’s home again instead of left outside in the rain, even with small alterations 🙏🏻

    I think you should have stained it maybe darker, I understand that you probably wanted the natural wood color to speak for itself- But the top inner vines looks a bit odd with the old stain still there. Granted, it probably would be very hard to get it all out, but if you blended it with something just a tad darker, it would be less noticeable. As for the front part you removed, it does look a little barren but not in a horrible way. Personally I would have left it, or replaced it with another center wood that had more vines in the cravings to keep the theme, but I understand if that was best for your tastes. I hope this doesn't come off as rude or judgemental (that's not my intention) these are just my thoughts, but overall, great job! :)

    • @2ndlife.furniture.restoration
      @2ndlife.furniture.restoration  2 місяці тому

      It doesn't come off as rude at all! I honestly very much appreciate your constructive comment! I do like the idea of adding a piece in the center with the same vines; that would have tied it together better. It was indeed very hard to get into small grooves. I have been thinking of buying a small sandblaster specifically for this. Have you done some furniture refurbishments before? :) Because you have some good ideas! ;)

  • @Junebug92

    I actually like the natural wood colour more than that old fashioned yellowish 70s stain.
    I’m not sure how I feel about the pieces of wood you took out. I wasn’t a big fan of it tbh, but it kinda looks empty now?
    Maybe you can look for some additional ornamental pieces of wood 🤔?
    PS: so glad you left the stained glass, I was so scared 😅

    I think the places you took the wood blocks off need a little something, especially in the center between the vines. Perhaps you could do a leaded glass motif similar to what is in the doors. Could be fun to learn, if you don’t do that already.
    For detail work such as in and around the vines, a Dremel or a brush with furniture stripper might be a better bet than the sander. I think the sander ended up flattening out some of the carvings where it didn’t fit in between the details.

    • @2ndlife.furniture.restoration
      @2ndlife.furniture.restoration  2 місяці тому +1

      That would be great to learn to make leaded glass! Maybe a project for the future! I did try stripper and a dremel but that didn’t work. Do you think I should have included that in the video?

    I do agree the pieces you took out were some big chunks and maybe a bit much (even it still looked good). But in the end there are now two parts with nothing on it and looking like it's not finished. It's missing something... maybe even just some painting or writing on it (can imagine the year the cabinet got build in the upper middle free space and some light vines or something simple, but nice in the middle part.... maybe a recreating of the decoration above the windows, just drawn on?). :) Other than that I really do agree that the wood is absolutely precious on its own... and the windows are just everything

    It is so sad that some people just don’t know how to be kind. I agree the scroll section looks unfinished. The centre panel also looks a different shade and as if something has been taken out. I would infill with a thin piece of wood right across the scroll section (losing the scroll) and if possible re-bead around this to match the centre piece edging. I would then paint in these areas and the bottom apron area highlighting one of the colours in the glass work. This would completely modernise the piece and show off the glass work more. Just my thoughts and I have done church glass and Tiffany and appreciate how beautiful it is. Well done you for taking the time to rescue this piece.

    I Like the new color better and the deletion of the center strip of wood but the little piece across the top that you took out left it looking a bit odd. the decorative carving now has a blank spot where the circle pieces stop which makes it obvious something used to be there.
