    I do agree the pieces you took out were some big chunks and maybe a bit much (even it still looked good). But in the end there are now two parts with nothing on it and looking like it's not finished. It's missing something... maybe even just some painting or writing on it (can imagine the year the cabinet got build in the upper middle free space and some light vines or something simple, but nice in the middle part.... maybe a recreating of the decoration above the windows, just drawn on?). :) Other than that I really do agree that the wood is absolutely precious on its own... and the windows are just everything <3 Lots of love from Germany :)

      That would be a nice touch to add the year it was build! Sadly I don't know it tho.. I'm thinking of adding wooden ornaments with flowers or like you say vines in the middle part and on the sides. What do you think? And Hi neighbor! Hello from Belgium 🥰

      @@2ndlife.furniture.restoration Oh, that sounds lovely :) Flowers or wooden ornaments would be amazing! Wooden ornaments are especially my favorite :D And maybe you can add the year of restoration to it. Not the same, but still something to remember :) Oh, and wow!!! :D Hi neighbor back! :D So cool! @@LeeZetLMG Yes indeed the world is a small place sometimes! 😊 The year of the restoration could work! I’ve been thinking of having some kind of stamp made with my logo so I can add a stamp on the back of my furniture with something like “given a second life by..” or something like that! And then I could also always add the date!

    It is so sad that some people just don’t know how to be kind. I agree the scroll section looks unfinished. The centre panel also looks a different shade and as if something has been taken out. I would infill with a thin piece of wood right across the scroll section (losing the scroll) and if possible re-bead around this to match the centre piece edging. I would then paint in these areas and the bottom apron area highlighting one of the colours in the glass work. This would completely modernise the piece and show off the glass work more. Just my thoughts and I have done church glass and Tiffany and appreciate how beautiful it is. Well done you for taking the time to rescue this piece.

Потом так бездарно шлифовать резные детали. А вымыть стекла нельзя было до того, как дверцы навешаны? Может вам лучше вести каналы кулинарии или косметики, а мебель оставить в покое?

    I don't know why the original craftsman didn't go all the way across the top with the scrollwork. It did look too busy with the start/stop/start/stop. Now it's just there for no reason and looks unfinished? This is a strange piece. The doors are beautiful, though.

    Seriously?! This was handmade by a local carpenter - someone from your community that took care and pride in their craft. This little cabinet would have been a local antique one day (if it not already was one). The original elements are now destroyed. You significantly lowered its value (not just monetary) -- and it no longer is original.

    • @2ndlife.furniture.restoration
      @2ndlife.furniture.restoration Місяць тому

      It depends on how you determine it’s value. I bought it from people who we’re leaving it outside in the rain and didn’t want it anymore, so they got rid of it for a low price, they did not see it’s value. But I loved this little cabinet so much, specially respecting it’s handmade local craft aspect. I will keep this piece for my home and look at it everyday with joy ☺️ I think thàt is very valuable and I think the original carpenter would be happy that it can be loved in somebody’s home again instead of left outside in the rain, even with small alterations 🙏🏻

    I think you did good work, but I honestly think the piece looked better before. The ornamental pieces belong to that style of furniture. You simplified it, making it a "plain" style. You should have left it alone. Some pieces just look better as is. This piece was one of them.

    • @2ndlife.furniture.restoration
      @2ndlife.furniture.restoration Місяць тому

      Thanks! And that’s ok, I’m keeping this piece for myself and changed it so that it fits with my interior more, but I wouldn’t call it plain by any means! Those stained glass doors are the star of the show

  • @WaterNai
    @WaterNai 2 місяці тому

    I think the places you took the wood blocks off need a little something, especially in the center between the vines. Perhaps you could do a leaded glass motif similar to what is in the doors. Could be fun to learn, if you don’t do that already. For detail work such as in and around the vines, a Dremel or a brush with furniture stripper might be a better bet than the sander. I think the sander ended up flattening out some of the carvings where it didn’t fit in between the details.

    • @2ndlife.furniture.restoration
      @2ndlife.furniture.restoration 2 місяці тому

      That would be great to learn to make leaded glass! Maybe a project for the future! I did try stripper and a dremel but that didn’t work. Do you think I should have included that in the video?

    Unfortunately now it looks obviously like there are considerable sized features missing. I think getting rid of the inexpertly made rectangular decorative border instead would have made more sense. It just looks amateur and doesn't go with the plain elegance of the piece.

    • @2ndlife.furniture.restoration
      @2ndlife.furniture.restoration 2 місяці тому

      @@2ndlife.furniture.restoration It looks to me that it was a stamped in, shallow design rather than carved. To me, it looked like that mass produced stuff you buy by the linear foot at the DIY store, glued on.

    I Like the new color better and the deletion of the center strip of wood but the little piece across the top that you took out left it looking a bit odd. the decorative carving now has a blank spot where the circle pieces stop which makes it obvious something used to be there. I’m not creative enough to think how that could be fixed. Overall I appreciate what you did to this piece and it looks fantastic.
