  • I found this ANTIQUE DRESSER with a detached mirror at a thrift store several months ago. I paid $95.00 for this abandoned, painted, DIY Furniture Makeover. When I began removing the layers of paint, I discovered original white oak with beautiful tiger oak patterns. Once the necessary repairs were made, and the piece was completely sanded using my Surfprep sanders and sanding blocks, I decided this piece needed a traditional finish. I chose a dark oil-based stain, finished with several layers of clear Shellac. This was a rewarding project and I hope to find more pieces like this in the future. Thank you for all the support on the channel. Barry

You are so right that anyone can do these things! I am a 67 year old woman that loves making furniture new again. Sometimes restoring, sometimes refurbishing. Totally self taught and don't have all the fancy tools but have so much fun watching things come back to life to be useful again.

Love to watch your work!!! This piece I love, but I didn't like the silver hardware. Do u think the hardware is original..looks like kitchen cabinet kind. But u did an amazing job!❤

I would think that the hardware is original since he showed the inset for the lock and no sign of previously drilled and filled hardware handle holes. Everything is simple traditional and a smaller scale. Also furniture from the era around Art Deco often had a modern chrome nickel finish

Your labor of love on this one is mind-boggling & the result is amazing!! It takes incredible patience to pick paint out of all of that quarter-sawn oak grain with dental tools. I believe artists like you with your love of wood, & painstaking restorations are creating a renaissance of appreciation for traditional wood finishes. I LOVE your devotion to your craft. Amasing restoration, Barry! From the way the piece is made, it looks to be a sideboard/buffet, as opposed to a dresser, (flatware in the top drawer, table linens in the bottom two drawers and serving pieces in the side spaces, behind the doors). Since the top isn't flat all the way across the top, it could've even been sold as a bar, with the side spaces used to store bottles, decanters, etc., hence the locks on the doors and not on the drawers. I can imagine one of the old blue glass mirrors in the centre, with crystal decanters setting on it. Whatever it is, you did a phenomenal job restoring its pride!!!

My Italian grandfather, who had already done a lot of restoration work in Rome by age 18 when he emigrated to the United States, built all of the furniture in the home he made with my grandmother. He was a true artist. Given the contempt shown to Italian immigrants by the established white society, notwithstanding their genocide of and theft from Native Americans, very much ongoing at that time, my grandfather was demoted to working in textile mills where he developed the brown lung disease that eventually killed him.
My Italian father, also an extremely talented artist who could literally do anything, restored old houses furniture, cars and trucks to perfection.
    I miss him terribly.
I loved watching you restore this nearly vandalized piece, right down to removing and repairing fragments of veneer, and the brilliance of the hardware. Beautiful work.
You have an enviable workspace and collection of tools.

Beautiful! I so much prefer to see an old piece restored/resurrected to its original beauty than to watch a piece like this suffocated under a coat of paint. Thank you.

Beautifully done! I have an antique tiger oak pull-top desk, more than 100 years old, that is almost exactly the same color as you've stained this piece. Also, your videos are such a joy to watch, and I think what I most enjoy is how you include us the viewers as if we were right there with you, and you put so much thought and care into your content, thank you!

Absolutely stunning restoration. When I saw that tiger oak, I was hoping you were going to stain the piece and you did! You did a beautiful job and the piece shines.

I don't care what you touch, it always turns out beautiful. I can't believe though that you had to pay 90$ for that trasch piece. Thanks for your amazing video!

I just found your channel & I love how you’ve mixed furniture restoration with calming music & ASMR. You are so meticulous in your work & it was a total pleasure watching the beautiful job you did on this gorgeous piece of furniture. My mother’s favorite wood was tiger oak & our dining room table, a buffet & 2 of her dressers were all made from it while I was growing up. Thank you! Just subscribed! ❤

I hope you keep it for yourself, Barry. It's worth thousands now. There were so many super talented woodcrafters/carpenters/furniture builders in the old days. There was also plenty of beautiful hardwoods in the old days. That piece tells the tale of the old ways. Just think, you have taken part in recreating a finely crafted piece of antique furniture.

The piece may be european in origin, art deco, especially the hardware. From the design I would place it as a sideboard versus a vanity.

Indeed this style is quite similar to what was created in Europe during the roaring twenties. Who knows, this piece may have been a traveler in its past!
