In this lesson I will demonstrate how to play the killer intro to Metallica's incredible "Master of Puppets".
Now I don't plan on only teaching this part of the song. I will definitely be finishing the whole thing note-for-note. I just always gauge which songs to finish first based of the support they get. So if you wanna see the rest of these lessons let me know!
In this Master of Puppets guitar lesson I will break down the extremely fast down picked intro that so many Metallica fans love.
In will require a pretty advanced picking hand technique. If you don't have very much experience with this type of rapid muted down stroke metal thrashing, simply try and get the coordination down first. Then as you slowly speed the riff up, pay close attention to any tension that may arise in your picking hand wrist, forearm and shoulder. Use small relaxed movements.
The left hand doesn't get to sit around very long either. It is required to hop down the fretboard fret-by-fret keeping up with the right hand. Getting them both synchronized can be quite the challenge.
The second half of the intro goes into a riff that is a bit easier to play since it stays put in one area of the fretboard and the right hand picking is slightly easier (I explain why in the video lesson).
This is classic thrash metal at it's absolute best so take your time and learn it right.
In the second video lesson I will finish all the heavy rhythm guitar parts. "Master of Puppets" is truly a masterful collection of some of the greatest riffs in metal history so you will definitely want to master all of these riffs.
In the third lesson I will demonstrate how to play the serene harmony guitar solo (both parts!) note-for-note. I will also show you how to play the guitar solo for this section and the clean arpeggio guitar rhythms.
In the fourth lesson we will finally take a crack at the Kirk Hammett's main guitar solo. This solo is full of blistering legato, alternate picking, tremolo picking, screaming harmonics and sequences. It is a true workout for the metal guitar lover. It is also one of Kirk Hammett's finest moments in my opinion.
In the last video lesson (yep that is 5 in all!), I will demonstrate how to play the killer musical interlude that occurs after the main solo. This is truly Metallica at their peak!
Hopefully, you guys will make it through the monster lesson series! If you do, I would love to see you do a cover of it on UA-cam! Good Luck! :)
    Carl...

You could do the same thing an octave lower. So instead of starting on the 20th fret of the B string, start on the 8th fret of the B string. One issue is that it’ll be more difficult to play because of the long divisions between each fret but eh, better than nothing right?

For all people who dont have enough Frets:
There is a formula for Notes
If you want to play a note on a higher string calculate:
    x-5
If you want to play a note on a lower string calculate:
    x+5
You can multiply the 5 with the strings you want to go down or up :)
    Eg: x+(5*2)

A better tip would be just saying to do a pre brend of 1 or two whole steps on the highest possible fret to get the same note, just saying'...

Hey Carl! Awesome tutorial as always! I think you are doing an extra pull off-hammer on combo when Hetflield's solo starts (14-15-17-19) part. I might be wrong but I actually watched him play super close live and also the MOP tabs book Metallica published in 90's didn't have that either. Just thought maybe you'd wanna take a look at it again. Best!

Hi can someone explain how to get the notes to linger (sustain?) on the harmony bits - is that a distortion from an amp or something? thank you

for me,the most difficult part is 9:08 to 9:11 at the correct pace and the last slide to the 19th fret. Its quite a long slide.

@@gamingspirits9160 i haven't learned any songs by Metallica all the way through yet, but i learned the riffs and melody's to One, Enter Sandman, Fade to Black, and everything besides Kirk Hammet's solo in master of puppets. I plan on learning the rest of those songs soon. I also play a lot of songs by other bands. How many songs can you play?

    • @gamingspirits9160
      @gamingspirits9160 4 роки тому

TheFactsMachine I can play a few solos, I tried learning a few songs off AJFA, songs I can fully play at full speed is creeping death, seek and Destroy, fade to black, ride the lightning, disposable heroes, phantom lord, no remorse and a few riff from every song off Kill ‘em All.

Great soloing, but u gotta slow it down at the end, I ended up spending ages just rewinding one second parts just so I could catch on. But still, fantastic playing, I enjoyed learning this.

Is the last part a slide from the 10th fret to 19 on the high e, or 12 to 19?? It's not sounding right and it's tough for me to make that slide quickly. Got the rest of it down pretty good though.
